Not my favorite of this author and the ending is a bit abrupt, but a sweet story with a bit of plot.

[collapse]

A bit about the in*est tag: MC and ML are not siblings or anything like that. The 'in*est' (whether one would call it that depends, I wouldn't) consists of (slight spoiler) :

Spoiler

It turns out the MC and ML are cousins.

[collapse]

The MC is a science genius university student who's dense when it comes to feelings, so it takes him a while to recognise what he feels for the ML is romantic love (he thinks something is wrong with him when his heart starts beating violently when the ML is near lol). He's stubborn and childish, but with a good heart. He's adopted, and his parents used to work for the ML's parents, so the MC grew up with the ML and they've always been especially close. I liked that despite being so dense, the MC is very upfront and decisive about his feelings once he realises that he has them.

The ML has been in love with the MC since he was a teen, but kept it a secret from the MC because he didn't want to take advantage of him (the MC was too young at the time) and because he didn't believe the MC would feel the same way.

It's a simple slice of life story about first love between childhood friends, with a side plot about the ML's uncle and his relation to the MC, who's his student.

The smut chapter is good, this author usually writes explicit scenes and she does so quite well.

This won't be everyone's cup of tea, especially due to a certain tag.

However, this satisfied a very rarely satiated tiny dark portion of my lizard brain lol

This was so well written and so well translated. I do wish it were longer but I still sighed happily after the last extra. Kind of like finishing a very delicious dark chocolate cake, and licking the last crumb off of the fork, wishing you could have more.

For those worried, this kind of toed the line a lot.

MC and ML don't know they are first cousins, and grow up as childhood friends. ML realizes his feelings for MC while they are young, but knows to keep things appropriate. MC is written to be a pretty high-functioning person on the spectrum, but I was so so sooooo happy to see MC's straightforwardness and sincerity.

[collapse]

MC and ML care so much for each other, and the best thing this story did was to show the reader. No outright telling. Just legit showing through their actions.

The s*x was satisfyingly explicit without going overboard. It was just added icing on the cake.

So happy I got to read this. Ended up bingeing it in a few hours. <<less

Honestly, reading up to chapter 43 and even 44, I would have rated this a solid 3 stars. It's a cute read. I liked the development of MC and ML's relationship, and for a novel like this (short and and mostly fluffy with a focus on the relationship development) that's the most important part. Would I say their relationship was perfect? No, but eh, that's fine for such a short novel.

After reading chapter 45, though, I had to drop this whole novel to 2 stars. Was chapter 45 bad? No.... more>>

But even tho the author says not to think too deeply about everything, chapter 45 made me question what the entire point of making MC adopted was. For such an important plot point, the ending was a bit lackluster and there's never any closure to it, I feel. For all the mentions of how much MC loves his adoptive parents, at the very end it doesn't seem like he cares much for them all compared to his new, rich biological parents.

[collapse]

The author doesn't want you to think too deeply about everything, but I'm the end of feels like this novel is saying Nature > Nurture. Biological parents > adoptive parents. And I don't stand by it. That's a lot for someone to have gleamed from one chapter where almost nothing important happens, but it's who and what was missing in that chapter that really made it feel that way. <<less

5 to pull up ratings. It's just a 4 for me mainly because I don't like how Kong Zong was written (very 2D & flat compared to the rest of the cast), how Yiwei's adoptive parents did not even appear during the time the truth about his birth was exposed - I don't even think they know he's dating the ML - and how Kang Yixin gets redeemed just like that. She was a failure of a mother through & through.

For me, the best part was actually the friendship between... more>> Yiwei and Ruirui, and also that part where the research group shielded Yiwei when Kong Zong did what he did. It was very nice and heartwarming. <<less

Some of the other reviewers almost stopped me from reading the novel so I decided to leave one myself, for balance.

First of all I have to say initially I wasn't the greatest fan of ML and MC, bc of how ML 'bullied' MC when he was younger. But he's really gentle to MC when it matters, and his behaviour was bc he didn't want to expose his feelings for MC. And honestly MC is a nerd while ML is a normal person (well normal ceo) haha and it makes sense... more>> that he couldn't really get along with MC before an incident brought them closer.

As for the adoptive/birth parents plot, I do agree that there wasn't a closure that I expected, his adoptive parents didn't know to the end. But MC isn't callous or wealth attracted as the other reviewers make it seem to be, he's actually excessively considerate of how they would feel, to the point he doesn't want to tell them, which would hurt them and change the dynamics of their 3 person household irrevocably. His adoptive mother has also shown that she's quite sensitive about herself and how others would view her son bc of her. One time, his enemy called her a delivery driver when she came to visit him at school, which affected her immensely bc she thought her status embarrassed her son, she even went to buy new clothes afterwards despite his reassurance. Now imagine he told her his bio parents found him, and his birth mom is rich! How would she feel about where they fit into his life? Loving her son the way she does, she would definitely push him towards them so that he could benefit, at the expense of herself and her hurt. This, he probably knows very well.

Also, as previously noted, MC is a nerd in the first place and was never good with social situations, especially sensitive emotional ones. He mentioned to ML about a story he read where a cat lived with two families for 9yrs without their knowledge, somewhat wistfully wondering if he could do that. So as observed, he's not socially slick enough to tell his adoptive parents and navigate that complicated situation, which isn't his fault - it's no one's fault except the woman who switched the babies. It's a complicated situation all around, even for his biological family, with his birth mother harbouring resentment and then guilt when she regarded her non-bio son. They also don't think that they're entitled to him as his bio parents, nor did they think of taking him away from his adoptive parents, they were really happy just to be able to spend stolen time with him to go on holiday for the first time as a family. There's also no need to demonise them like they're terrible compared to his adoptive parents just bc they're rich - they didn't want to abandon their child in the first place uk, he was literally swapped with some random woman's kid bc she realised they were rich and wanted them to provide her kid a better life. Ofc when they found out they would want to know their real child, and have complicated thoughts about the child they raised and loved, but as it turned out, his bio mother threw their own child out to die. MC's bio mom does acknowledge it's not the kid's fault, but how can she not have complicated emotions knowing he literally bullied her bio child, also, her bio child grew up unable to receive a drop of love from her, while she spoilt the despicable woman's son.

On to his adoptive parents, yes, his adoptive parents love him, but there's no need to compare the two is there? Why pit his bio and adoptive parents' performance against each other like he has to choose between one or the other? I feel like some of yall really put on rose tinted glasses and think that they were perfect parents to MC growing up. While they tried their best to raise him, which he acknowledges, they were too busy with business to care for him much when he was younger, often leaving him to fend for dinner himself, and even had him work as a cashier at night for them when he was just a child. Regardless of their admirable efforts, that's just not the ideal situation for a child. While they loved him and were good, normal working class parents, there's no need to act like they're saints who raised a child selflessly without getting a drop of gratitude in return. MC loves and respects them and even got into a fight for his mom. Sure they didn't appear in latter scenes, but I'm pretty sure the author just didn't know resolve the situation rather than not caring about them. If the author really wanted to demonise adoptive parents, they wouldn't spend so much time showing the extent of their care and love for MC.

It's not like the bio parents' appearance are like shiny new toys - MC went on a trip and they, out of a desire to spend time with him, booked tickets to the same trip without telling him and met him on the plane. It's not like MC nefariously avoided his adoptive parents for his newly found bio parents, he didn't know they were coming along for the last part at all! Also, what's wrong with spending time with his newly reconnected bio family? It doesn't mean that he has forgotten his adoptive parents, is he supposed to reject all contact with his bio parents to show his loyalty or some nonsense? When the trip is over, he's still going back to his adoptive parents, so what's the problem?

As for them not knowing that he's dating the ML, yeah no shit. He never even let his bio parents know on purpose, he told his bio father when he thought he was simply his professor and nothing else, and his bio mother found out when she saw them kissing when she was driving. It's not like he let them know for their approval, they themselves know that they're in no position to speak about MC's love life and could only accept it. For MC, I feel like he doesn't hide the rs, but he also doesn't go out of his way to announce it which is in line with his personality. He didn't even tell his best friend, who only found out they were together through leaked photos of MC and ML! So his adoptive parents not knowing is definitely not a slight towards them. <<less

I'll probably skim through the rest, but as of chapter 34 of is a 3 star rating. It would be higher but too many things were frustrating.

Spoiler

The MC's biological parents are crap. After wondering how their (switched) son could be rude and insulting, the father then started thinking about how MC should have grown up. Thinking his upbringing was in a barbaric place (oh no, a commoners house!). That he should have had a mother who loved him unconditionally (his adopted mum did) and a hero as a father (his adoptive father was good).

Not just that, but he was always disappointed and unsatisfied with Kong Zong for not being as smart as he wanted his son to be. The moment MC showed up, he compared his son to him multiple times. To me, he was the worst parent in the story.

I actually felt bad for Zong. It was just frustrating to read.
