The Obsessive Shou Moves On

In his previous life, Yun Qingci loved the Emperor more than life and death. When he was alive, he made soup and clothes for him, and in politics, he helped monitor his officials, even his family.

He was solely dedicated to the emperor, and all his scheming strategies were used to gain favour. He never borrowed his power as the Lord Empress to seek employment for his relatives, and he did not show favoritism. He can be said to be strictly impartial and incorruptible, not even recognizing his own family.

Outsiders were terrified of him, and relatives hated him, but Yun Qingci didn’t care. However, in the end, he was thrown into the cold palace by the only person he cared about and his whole family imprisoned.

Finally, he committed su*cide on that snowy day, and fell down that gilded tower.

Reincarnated, Yun Qingci retracted his claws, picked up the glass pieces of his heart, and conducted himself evasively in society. Acting as an escort to the Emperor for his relatives, he decided to become a proud Lord Empress that doesn’t need to be treasured or can have his status shaken.

Unexpectedly, the emperor who abandoned him like a shoe, praised by countless courtiers for both his virtue and kindness, suddenly changed his temper. He became cold and harsh, paranoid and cruel.

The servants who confronted Yun Qingci? He would beat them. The imperial concubines that provoked Yun Qingci? He’d punish them. A small person who framed Yun Qingci? He would kill him. When someone tries to approach Yun Qingci, he would become jealous to the extreme.

Soon everyone knew that Empress Yun was the emperor’s inverse scale. He was not allowed to be hurt, touched, or even looked at.

Yun Qingci, the fairy man, is speechless: So you like me not loving you, why didn’t you say that sooner?

So, I agree with the reviews that the characters are well written-- there's definitely miscommunication, but you can very clearly see WHY in both cases, and it's understandable why it isn't corrected quickly.

You also WANT them to get back together, even with MC trying to convince himself to fall out of love with the ML, and the ML starting off chasing this ideal one-way relationship.

But also as someone who can only deal with so much yearning, I'm taking a break at chapter 14 because I need some resolution! This is... more>> not my usual go-to read type, and I need some cuddles! Heck! <<less

One word. Toxic.

Thats what this whole novel is. Toxic relationships are very bad but its the most fun, I’m not quite sure how to explain. Like the thrill and the craze, the possessiveness to weird yin and yang yadda yadda. The MC and ML are in this toxic relationship. For one moment if you think the MC is worse, the ML is like an even more superlative of worse, if there is a word for it. It was a good read though.

Damnei with the story of reincarnation + angst + kingdom.

Unfortunately MC+ ML is too obsessive and jealous.

Both of them, until the end did not change even worse.

Warning: MC also annoying, cruel and scum.

Finish it because I like the ML, his only flaw is the lack of communication but had to paid so much for his love.

Honestly I don't like MC, he's unreasonable. Even when he already know the truth, he still gaslighting ML

Both of them have such a toxic ill-fated relationship. Things only get better few chapters towards the end and at the extra.

TRIGGER WARNING (self-harm, su*cide and a major spoiler)

i want to give this novel a 3.5 review + point 5 for the ML who, in the last life and second life didn't do anything wrong.

the story is very interesting at first but in the middle of it, the plot drops and the MC got more and more water in his brain. it must have been better if the POV is focused on the ML, but because the main source of this story is the process of MC who got reborn... more>> and moved on from his obsessive love for ML in his past life, I can just endure his unreasonable ways. at first, I understand where he's coming from because it's all love, he got crazy, offered his all and thought he got nothing in return.

MC kept saying that in this life even if he is the lord empress, he will never want to have anything to do with the ML anymore and will just settle on "respecting each other" but I didn't see any bit of respect from MC towards ML. he's crazy and cruel in his last life but he got even more unreasonable and cruel when he got reborn, all he had done in the previous life even though he got manipulated is to his own accord, he can choose to not do it but because he was paranoid, he became ruthless. he kept justifying himself in the second life, saying he was afraid of pain but still did self-harm just to make the ML feel hurt for him.

MC's also manipulative, insensitive and impulsive. the part where
Spoiler

he urged the ML to kill the empress dowager to get "revenge for the both of them" but actually he it's just for his pleasure and own interests

[collapse]

and I understand that MC got pushed to the edge on his past life, kept in the dark, and thought he was abandoned. he became wary of anyone aside from his close attendants and
Spoiler

accidentally killed the two secret guards ML sent to protect him from all the chaos happening, he kept it from the ML when they talked about everything in the second life

[collapse]
and he has the audacity to blame his d/eath to the ML, guilt tripping and all. and the ML, because we are on the "chasing the beloved" trope just accepts the abuse and resign to his fate because he loved the MC so much.

and the most ridiculous part were
Spoiler

MC actually felt happy seeing ML self-harm for him, as if he was very pleased to see ML also dies for him as he did in the past life, I mean su*cide is not to be taken lightly and our MC here make his su*cide in the past life the reason to hold ML in the throat. as if ML didn't suffered enough when MC is still alive and suffered more when he died

[collapse]

the only flaw of the ML is that he kept everything to himself, leading MC thinking he was not loved anymore.

all in all, they lacked COMMUNICATION and trust with each other and that's the sole reason they got to the point of no turning back, got reborn and almost done the same mistake.

communication is the key y'alls

PS: this is my opinion please don't take it seriously, I just wanted to vent my frustrations because I was so pissed with MC 😭 <<less

I don't like stories where the main conflict can be solved by people just honestly talking. If ML is shameless enough to chase MC, why isn't he able to be an adult in the first place. If MC is overbearing and already known to do whatever he wants, why can't he speak his mind. Personally I dislike both of them. That being said, others may enjoy this. It's well translated so it's worth giving a shot.

Wow, I don't know why some readers are saying the ML doesn't deserve the mental torture. I mean, I haven't read much of the chapters because it's not my cup of tea but like... I mean... in the earliest chapters, it has already been mentioned that the ML had actually physically hurt the MC to the point of injury. And the latter chapters, we knew he mentally hurt MC again and again for political reasons. Along with his revealed hypocrisy in this life, still wanna say it is simply a... more>> misunderstanding? As if!

Also, what do you mean MC should have believed in ML and that he shouldn't listen to what other people say?

Is it because he's supposed to blindly believe in someone who refused to say anything and keeps on acting suspiciously? In what world, sane people would ever agree to that?

Do read or reread chapters 33, 35, and 38.

MC said everything I want to say to ML and everyone who supported him (by everyone, I mean those who haven't read or have read until chapter 39 only).

Up to this point, ML totally deserves every bit of it. He was tortured in a way that is simply a return of what he did say or do to MC previously even if the meaning behind it is different from what the MC originally thought it means. I still think so even after reading chapter 39. <<less

Kudos to the author for writing a very contradictory novel. But, words are not enough to express my dissatisfaction with the MC. I love wife chasing crematorium novels and I had high expectations with this one seeing most of the recent reviews but here I am stewing in disappointment and frustration.

The MC is a s*upid hypocritical and selfish brat. I understand that he suffered, that he feel neglected, that he died in what seems to be in vain and that he harbor resentment to the ML in his rebirth but... more>> my goodness he hasn't matured in anyway.

The ML is not faultless, of course, but the MC is just plain s*upid. MC is just full of irredeemable qualities that no matter how I try to like him it's impossible:

  • What does the MC expect? He married an emperor! The ML has greater responsibility than anyone else and the MC is a lovesick fool who expects the emperor to be at his beck and call!
  • He's disrespectful of the emperor and customs, he's brainless! Storming a concubine's palace, wantonly killing anyone who touches the emperor! Causing dissatisfaction in court and being impeached by the courtiers! With the ML's neglect or indulgence of these acts, they're only so lucky no one's dared to plan a coup d'etat to remove this husband and wife.
  • He's easily manipulated by the empress dowager!
  • He loves (?) The ML but doesn't trust him!
  • He said he just wants security in their relationship but he can't even give the emperor a peace of mind, always causing trouble
  • The ML gave him a way out but he chose to stay and he drove himself crazy!
  • He's already at the peak of power, above thousands of people and just under one man, but he's paranoid and cruel, both in their first and second life.
  • He's hypocritical. His rebirth gave him a chance to start over with his parental family and pretend he hadn't done anything despicable to them in their previous life but he's being such a scum to the ML, questioning whether the ML deserves the chance to start over. Fck do you deserve that second chance too seeing as you're the one who alienated your family and became the knife in the emperor's hand to strike down your own family?
  • You say all of what happened in your previous life is the ML's fault, do you not see yourself? You were paranoid, distrustful and cruel! Despite your circumstances, it was your choice to do all what you have done! You're irrational! And self-centered!
  • He's extremely jealous.
  • He's manipulative to the extreme, using the emperor's remorse to do unlawful acts like killing without evidence! The empress dowager's scene at around chapter 34-36 I think.
  • He physically abuses the emperor, how come anyone doesn't see that?
  • He's brainless rose tinted view of the emperor as being perfect drove him insane when he found that ML's unable to meet all of those expectations.
There's so many I can say but I'm just so displeased that I can't articulate it properly in words!

Many reviews have so many good points regarding the negativity in the MC. It's the first time I'm feeling this much dislike to an MC.

The ML on the other hand:

  • He's doesn't communicate! But if your lover is someone like that, of course even I would find it hard to communicate!
  • He was rational but the death of the MC broke his mind that he became unnecessarily cruel!
  • I understand that you want to chase your wife, but fuchhk have you no pride? No dignity? You're still the emperor! The empress is publicly humiliating you, going against your commands without regard for the watchful eyes around! Even physically abusing you in private!
  • The ML's choice to handle both the country's and the empress's affairs so perfunctorily drove both of you insane. You didn't address the insanity of the empress nor the power imbalance in the court thus the enemies managed to fish in troubled waters.
My goodness, both of them are incompatible psychopaths. Loving someone till insanity. Disregarding how they, two people in power, can affect the people. The monarch and his empress arguing and it's the people below them who suffer. Both of them couldn't handle their life circumstances and chose to self destruct. Not an ounce of positive attitude in handling problems. Both of them are vengeful.

It's painful to read. And painful not in the way I like. It didn't even make me cry in empathy but it did make me pull my hair out in annoyance.

I like flawed characters, it makes them human and relatable but these two just can't. They're just extremely s*upid. How the heck did they even survive the deep waters of the palace?

I love wife chasing crematorium but this just isn't it. <<less

This novel is like a train wreck, horrible, but you can't look away. The relationship was toxic and many reactions and actions didn't make sense.

The MC is a selfish, overly emotional, arrogant man child. The ML is a spineless, arrogant, overly rational jerk.

I really can't think of 1 redeeming quality of this novel, but somehow I finished it 😂. It may have been better if the author only wrote it in 30 chapters as it dragged.

Great translation, thank you!

Solid story, could have been better, but still entertaining. I liked how the shou was really obsessed and kind of crazy in his first life, and vindictive and refusing to love the gong in his second life. But I wish we had seen more of how the shou MC went from being a sweet and loving partner to overly clingy and insanely jealous empress who would kill anyone who dared to even have thoughts about his husband.

Also I wish the story had dived more into the shou's suffering - being... more>> driven to su*cide was a massive trauma for him, the more that got revealed about the gong's motives and actions in the past, the more he ended up looking like the good guy. It might just be me, but I don't enjoy it when the protagonist have been treated horribly by his lover and you really get to hate the guy - just to have the author pull the rug from under your feet and yell 'Surprise! It was all a misunderstanding and there's another person who's the real villain.' Can I please just get a scum gong who actually needs to atone for his bad deeds? The MC was driven to su*cide, and no, it wasn't his fault, he had real reason to believe that the emperor wanted to drive him to death.

And since the ML turned out not to be a scum, I found his atonement and punishment way too exaggerated. Also I'm not really fond of crematorium plot where the shou forgives the gong just because

Spoiler

he suffers a lot. That doesn't magically fix the relationship.

[collapse]

There was also a side plot with one of the MC's brothers and another guy who apparently fell in love with him, but it was only mentioned in passing with a weird cliffhanger.

All in all it was fairly good, it was only the last handful of chapters that annoyed me a bit, and also the fact that the villain was really generic and one-dimensional. <<less

Definitely worth reading when you're in the mood for some angst. Please be wary, a few parts could be very triggering for some. The relationship between the two leads is so fkd up. They're BOTH so toxic and hateful. The story is essentially them coming to understand each other, learning the difference between love and obsession and finding a semblance of balance in their dynamic.

I disliked both characters themselves, esp the MC - the word logic was never taught to him. The characters are flawed, they are selfish, irresponsible, uncommunicative... more>> and never try to build an equal partnership. Both of them are equally cruel though, hurting each other, hurting themselves and others.

The author did a great job with the story.. So much that I didn't mind reading the whole thing despite my initial hatred for the leads. Though you don't condone their actions you can see how they turned out this way. My heart broke over and over. We'd call them crazy but for the two of them, they were each other's lifeline. The only spark in critical moments in their lives, so they clung to each other. Their world is so full of each other, there isn't too much space for other characters. The stand outs are Prime Minister Yun and The Emp Dowager. The "second male lead" was just.. Around I think lol.

Spoiler

the dreaming of the past to see the partners suffering has been done in other works too but this one had me bawling gosh

[collapse]

In all, a good read. Great translation too. <<less

This is one of the most flawed MCs I've encountered, but I actually liked that there was no Gary Stu/cinnamon roll to be found here. There were moments where I hated the MC, but I understood why he behaved the way he did. Both the MC and ML experienced a lot of trauma in their lives and the MC absolutely emotionally tortured the ML and I felt really bad for him. There was a point where I thought they should not be together, but also oddly enough I could see... more>> how they were made for each other.

I liked that one of the chapter reviews said, "their love language: stabbing and slashing themselves... so fit to be together". I also liked this line from the novel, "Li Ying hated his extremes, but Yun Qingci hated his indifference. Li Ying loved his gentleness, while Yun Qingci longed and cherished his thoughtfulness." This is a dark novel full of scum abuse, so not for the faint of heart. It's a great guilty please read. The extra chapters give such great insight to the MC and ML's relationship.

I appreciate the hard work and time in translating this novel! <<less

I'm not starring the review because I couldn't finish the story.

I didn't mind the dog's blood - that's why I picked up the story since I'm in an angsty mood.

[Btw the tag for su*cide and self harm (there's not even a tag for that) weren't listed and I'm coming to this story late.]

... more>> I even liked the reversal of the Lord Empress acting sane while the Emperor went nuts.

Where I had to stop was the revelations of how the Emperor and Empress transmigrated back to a point 8 years into their marriage.
Spoiler

Anything that involves a person carving themselves up to feed flesh eating snakes is where you lose me. It makes the sleeping next to a corpse for 12 years seem mild and that makes me physically ill.

[collapse]
PLEASE READ THE SPOILER IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH CREEPY SICK CRAZY.

I read the horror romances and love them. This was just sick, gross and creepy crazy. That the MC's soul ghost saw everything in the spoiler and this is what causes him to turn the corner and forgive the ML makes him as freaking nuts as the ML. A bridge too far, author, a bridge too far. <<less

3/4 for the story, 4/5 for the entertainment. It's a very cute and hilarious romance, but I'm dropping this for now because I just don't feel like it's the type of story I want to consume at this moment.

First thing first, this novel is not well executed so don't have much expectation when you start reading it. Secondly, I didn't really like this story nor did I hate it. To be exact I didn't like our MC. He downright annoyed me especially in the later part of the story where everything was explained to him but he still decided to act like a basic b*tch who feels that the world revolves around him. Their past life was torturous for BOTH of them not just MC alone. Both of... more>> them were schemed against, both of them suffered and both of them were at fault. MC was too obsessed while ML wanted to balance everything out. There of course were some incidents where ML acted like a jerk and he should definitely be punished for it. He should've also made everything clear to MC when he saw how paranoid MC was. It was mainly miscommunication that brought in this disaster to them. <<less

Finally, a break from the usual bad romance trope where MC is the unhappy, emotionally/physically tortured protagonist in a bad political/convenience marriage (the latest Korean romance-orientated web novel hype) where MC regains clarity (a severe wake-up call through death or a plainly painful lesson that pushed them over the edge) and harbors vengeance upon receiving too much abuse, tries to distance themselves from scum, but scum doesn't allow it, yet the protagonist still retains a strong doormat personality and let ML take the lead on most matters.

Might've exaggerated, but overall... more>> cliche is still the same, HOWEVER!
The difference here is that MC is at least a capable person who's unafraid of hurting back, and capriciously vicious. He followed through on his determination not to get hurt again, if only most of these protagonist had half of that resolve this type of genre would be less hateful and cringe.

I suppose I still prefer both being scums than the MC falling back into his old routine of blindly loving and suffocating under the circumstances and trying to suffocate back with his unruly way of loving.

You can find peace in MC's cruel ways, the hurt inflicted was never one-sided. A story of two idiots hurting and loving each other over-dramatically.

ML is the kind of idiot who got too complacent with MC's devotion and submission and finally got a dose of his own medicine. He had led MC on and kept him at a distance with fake intimate pretenses instead of drawing a line when MC had become too paranoid later on in their relationship.

MC is a psycho guard dog around ML, whoever got too close gets bitten to death, only coming to realize he had been acting like a clown after reincarnation.
Spoiler

ML knows MC's best and worst sides. To say that he fits the empress role is a far fetch. ML is a great emperor but sacrifices a lot of himself and others for the country. He's that annoying guy who will NOT communicate with you, not explain things to you, and merely expects you to be patient with no end in sight. Only towards the very end did ML feel like opening up that clam-like mouth of his to MC.

MC, who's an extremist, is completely unfit to be what is asked of him. He'll act like a bull when it sees red, absolute tunnel vision. He hates with a bias and loves with a bias. Pettiness and vengefulness cloud his judgment long-term and the impulsive toxic actions, like self-harm, gaslighting, victim shaming, and snarky sarcasm, only create dislike and distance.
Pretty much the ultimate petty queen.

ML's extreme sides overwhelmingly top MCs' after his death and after some plot advancement machinations, MC gets to witness the physical and emotional prices ML paid for losing him, which FINALLY calmed MC down.
Nevertheless not praiseworthy on both sides to threaten each other with self-harm to make the other pay attention or make them stay.
And it's only after seeing enough bloodshed from ML that MC became complacent enough to forgive him.
MC becomes more annoying over time with his hypocrisy though, reprimanding ML for self-harm but doesn't self-reflect on himself. He still used that trick to gain ML's attention, by grabbing a knife to scare him. How MC was able to laugh that off in his own mind was plain scary.
He did verbally admit to that fault but when he attempted to scare ML, it was after the reincarnation and after he found out the truth of their first lives, so it still doesn't make it any better.

ML too, remains stuck in his old ways by NOT communicating and often withholding information and lastly struggles to keep up the transparency with MC.

The backlash of the spell to return them back to the past on ML works out well as a reminder for ML to keep loving him, but the question remains if it will ever be the chains that bind him to MC or be just an obstacle in the future if their love fades.

There were plenty of irregularities in the story such as the empress dowager and ML: ML was aware of her evil nature but never bothered to warn MC properly nor explain it to him. It was said that he's filial to his birth mother but given the risks, his lover is exposed to near such a dangerous person at all times, which should warrant him to loosen that mouth of his a little.

In the later years into their marriage in their first lives, MC had become a very dislikeable person. Those traits weren't new either, as MC had often displayed his fits towards his siblings and father.
The new level of excessiveness stems from of course the outer force, the empress dowager, and his newly gained power as the lord empress.
In the novel, they kept repeating how MC was never such a person, but it's simply because nobody gave him the reason to.
His father could very well be a perfect trigger to worsen his character if he didn't love his son. Minister Yun always gave in to his son and his siblings are always careful around him due to his relapsing childhood injuries.

[collapse]

I don't really see these types of stories as romantic and only dramatic, as it starts off and ends with always a delusional level of tranquility, they merely fixed the surface level of what's broken, toxic traits in their relationship yet remain. I can see their yearning for each other, which is sweet but it seems all so temporary and fragile, like a second honeymoon phase.
But I do greatly appreciate the pace of the story and no crappy stalling or any procrastinating.

Great translations! Great read! Nothing ground breaking or heart wrenching but surely entertaining. <<less

While I believe this is not everyone's cup of tea I also believe that this is one of the stories whick is capable of keeping someone hooked on it. The story is exceptional, not to long, not too short and the characters are rich in one way or the other.

Although at first it seems like the MC is over acting and being dramatic, I guess after reading a few chapters into the story I have a better understanding where he comes from. I even liked how the MC's character is... more>> written and the character himself. The ML had his own reasons. I'm not justifying him in any case but there were times I felt pity towards him. The reasons for everyone's behavior is nicely and simply laid out by the auther and it's clear that both of them had problems and short comings.

The angst was the cherry on top for me. It's not everyday that you get to read perfect angsty stores like this where the angst flows at least half of the story and not rainbows and roses after one coaxing session.

If you are hesitating or not sure BUT you can stomach angsty tropes PLEASE give it a try. I would even go as far to say that this is one of the best I've read and a story I'd like to come back to again! <<less

I only made it to chapter 39 before giving up in disgust. The title is entirely misleading. The 'shou' didn't 'move on'. He just found a different way to throw childish temper tantrums. He's spoiled, coddled, somehow miraculously good at everything despite it never showing him put in any effort. There was never any 'love' to move on from, only mindless, selfish obsession. I stopped reading because I find the thought of the two actually forming an emotional attachment repulsive. The Emperor is incompetent and the 'Emperor's spouse' is a... more>> conceited brat. For those who like this kind of ridiculously exaggerated soap opera, it's not horribly written and the translation quality is decent. <<less

I almost dropped this a few times.

It's definitely a read that will tempt you to do so.
I get that crematoriums can be frustrating, but I don't necessarily mind, however, this had me flipping a few tables.

Characters : 4/5

The characters here are definitely never OOC. MC is a spoilt kid with a terrible mouth. Is arrogant, entitled and honestly, just a rich kid. There's nothing particularly special about him, he's just a pretty young master.
ML is actually quite clever but brain switches off when it comes to MC. He's quiet, timid and mostly rational. But is also a coward, unreliable, and indecisive.

I honestly found the MC annoying and a bit unbearable. But that's also his character design as a spoilt rich kid who struggles to take responsibility over their actions, so the author did really well in that aspect.

I don't think I could go so far as to call ML a scum because I think the decisions he made were for the most part, quite rational. However, I do understand why MC is so upset and unwilling to continue the relationship. So much happened, and nothing can honestly make up for the pain he felt.

Spoiler

HOWEVER, just as MC was a puppet and was used for others schemes, so was the ML.

The true scum is the Empress Dowager. She's the villain and everyone is a victim of her greed.

If I think about it, MC had a family that cared about him, even though they weren't on good terms.

But ML literally had no one - all he had was the throne. Close family? None. Lover? Questionable.
So I am a bit more biased towards the ML (not excusing his actions and how terrible they were)

I also don't think he needed to suffer that much. Sh* just felt unjustified after a while. Not saying what he did is great and that there shouldn't be any repercussions, but the story is written in a way that makes us sympathise quite a lot with the ML, so the punishments he faces sometimes just feel.. overboard. Maybe that's the point? MC, although justified, was too stubborn and that kinda made it hard to sympathise with them. I get why people are like " he went through a lot, " because he did. But we're redoing things, your bae is cooperating, even if you don't love him anymore, just... damn don't be soOo mean.

Like when he was trying to force ML to marry a woman from his family and have kids to ensure his family's position. It just left a sour taste in my mouth and I guess I never recovered from that. 🤕

[collapse]

This is essentially a case of miscommunication between people with terrible personalities.

Plot

3/5

The story had me in the first half, I was really enjoying reading it but at some point it just got really tedious and I found myself skimming through chapters. I also just didn't like the two characters as a couple, just.. chemistry isn't there for me personally. Nothing tear jerking or awe-inspiring, which is okay, but just ended being meh for me.

Readability / Writing / Translation:

3/5

overall, not bad writing or translation. Just had trouble with things happening in the present or being day dreams about the past. Text doesn't really introduce these day dreams/ past events well. Found myself trying to reread a lot because there'd be like, 3 conversations going on, and I'd get confused as to which timeline we're talking about.

Last words:

Not a terrible read, but definitely not one I'll read again. I'm probably just not the market, and that's fine. This may work for you so go ahead and give it a try.

The story is good and MLs groveling is long and satisfactory but MC is really a crazy guy. In his previous life he was a terrible person who mu*dered and hurt people wantonly, was extremely jealous and manipulative and overall a psychopath. He really dint make it easy for ML. I am not trying to say that ML was right but he wasn't the only one wrong. I couldn't have also trusted someone like MC. They both are terrible people and I feel pity for people around them
