unbelievably bad. the author doesn't seem to understand that for "tsundere" you also need "dere." written this way it feels like MC, someone who just escaped an abusive relationship, is slowly lured back into the jaws of hell with the promise that "oh, i've really changed, I promise..." from the ML... I was rooting so hard for MC to get away from all these scum men but the author seems determined to make him suffer as much as possible.

ML is an idiot, no sweetness at all, truly should not even... more>> be called a romance novel. his transition to going from aggressively "tsun" to the point of being abusive for SEVEN YEARS to suddenly actually madly in love with the MC is so unrealistic it's jarring.

quit reading at ch 33 because the authors note had to explain to us IN THE NOTES the reasoning behind ML's actions in a flashback to help us "understand the sugar." I understand that there is no sugar, only lies disguised as sugar. putting salt in the sugar container doesn't make it sugar!!!!! narrative is incoherent, character motivations shallower than a puddle on a sidewalk, romantic feelings best summarized as "GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN." if there's one thing this novel does well, it's making me so angry that I'm here writing this review.

it's a dog blood drama that can't even get its tropes right, expect nothing. if anything, I'm choking back blood at this s*upidity of the MC going back to the dog s*upid ML. ML is tr*sh, all attempts at "redeeming" his actions just make him look even more like an idiot. seriously, I know this genre isn't meant for healthy communication between couples, but after reading this far, all I can say is: I'm really vomiting blood at this "romance" portrayal! <<less

This can only be considered a guilty pleasure. I like it, but it's complete tr*sh, just like the ML

Spoiler

There are those saying the MC was misunderstanding the situation, and that's technically true. They say that, rather than a tsundere, ML is an arrogant, self-absorbed moron who doesn't empathize with his surroundings, and this is also true. However, the part about him being oblivious to the MC's sufferings doesn't add up. He was there, in person, when his 'best friend' was badmouthing MC multiple times with poorly veiled words. He even had the sense to interrupt exactly once out of all those times when the fool 'went too far'. He knew, clearly, that the MC was being bullied by the friends he kept bringing around. I'm sorry, but his intelligence score has to be a basic 8, just enough to speak without slurring, if he couldn't pick up on this.

On top of that, he was aware of the MC's background, yet didn't think for one moment that he should maybe express one iota of the love he later claims to have always had for him. The arse even intentionally avoids having conversations with him, clearly thinking it's a bother. There wasn't a misunderstanding at all, logically. I hate that the author wrote this the way they did, but they certainly made an anger inducing drama. The lack of logic behind the characters' actions (including the 'bestie', who bullied the MC because love? And the MC, who should've just gotten mad and told the ML off for wasting 7 years of his life as soon as he decided to move on) certainly makes me angry.

[collapse]

Anyway, yeah. It's a soap opera, where the logic just don't work right. Kudos to the MC for sticking to his guns
Spoiler

until he doesn't. He definitely didn't make the ML work hard enough, nor did the ML really work to change, which means that by the end, the MC is still in a relationship with a man clearly unable to satisfy his needs long term and will be back to treating him like dirt and ignoring his arse in less than a year, assuming this is in a land of logic. Which it isn't. So, congrats MC, I guess?

Hm.

Yeah... no. It's not horrible, but is it worth the effort of reading? Not really. Not a recommendation.

Or rather, if you're going to read it, don't bother giving it too much investment. The translating is good though. Kudos to her.

  1. This Cheng Xu dude (sort of the second male lead?)... I really don't feel sorry for him. Sure, he liked the MC, and maybe that's why he was always so aggravating, promoting Song Yi Yu in front of the MC to break the MC and ML up. But thing is, the least he could've done was stop the ML's friends from bullying and looking down upon the MC. But instead, he either joined in on the jeering or simply stood aside and let it all happen as the MC's dignity was smeared onto the ground. So no, dude must've been delusional to think the MC could possibly accept him or even tolerate him.
  2. The whole story is an issue of communication--but communication problems aside... the ML is indeed a slag. Sure, he must've been justified in his 'hate' way back at the beginning of the 7 years. But 7 years in, and you're still treating the dude like shit? Hasn't the MC already professed his love enough? Even if you believed him to be lying (about his feelings) in the beginning... maybe 2-3 years of tr*shy treatment are barely justified... but 7 whole years of that? While proclaiming to have 'loved' him the whole time, even as your friends and parents treated him like shit? And you'd have thought that after seeing the way your parents treat him (the MC), you'd have realized that no, the MC was in fact NOT on their side. Even more, since you considered you and the MC to be in a relationship... doesn't that, at the very least, warrant decent boyfriend behaviour?
  3. It's the common story of cheap shou and scum gong and then cheap shou leaves and then scum gong turns into puppy gong. The only twist is that the scum gong has a barely reasonable reason for his bad behaviour (although that doesn't mean I think the reason holds up in the face of the later years of their relationship). Kinda wish the MC left. If it were me, no matter how much I loved my ex-boyfriend... the relationship was already a festering and infected mess. Even if there were promises of a better future... that wouldn't completely negate past behaviour.
  4. Honestly, I just want one novel where the MC actually leaves for good. Instead of click-baiting the readers into thinking that the MC really will become an independent woman... then he ain't. Sure, the ML later risked his life (or at least his hands?) to save the MC, but I still don't give a f*ck. I feel sort of sorry for him, but that's mostly just pity. If you really did truly love the MC... you wouldn't have treated him like shit. No matter what. The only reason the ML even bothered to change, in the end, was because the MC chose to leave. If the MC had stayed, you can bet my two bags of ham that the ML would've continued to be toxic.
  5. P.S. There are also mentions of sweet moments during their 7-year festering mess, and I found that weird, given the ML had been so horrible. But then I remembered, even emotionally abusive relationships have their 'sweet' moments, as those moments are what make the victims stay.

I am really enjoying this novel right now.

It's nice seeing an MC leave an abusive ML, and actually have a life afterwards. He's moved to a new city, gotten a better job, and is realising that his thoughts about his life being gray and empty after leaving ML was needlessly pessimistic.

I've seen some people writing reviews saying that it's basic tr*sh and MC returns to ML immediately, once he apologises, so I'm not looking forward to that.

I kind of disagree with people saying that this is basic and generic though?... more>> I'm only 22 chapters in, but so far it is miles apart from other chinese BL I've read. MC, when he decides to leave ML, actually succeeds. I'm far too used to MC's 'leaving', and ML follows MC, and basically raping MC until they give in, and realise that they DO love ML after all.

Seeing how the people who have been calling the novel tr*sh have completed the novel, I'm anxious going forwards, but right now, I'm loving this.
Maybe the people who are calling the novel dogsblood have found better chinese novels, but I havent found one with an MC who has shown half as much of a spine as this MC. (Although, admittedly I read a lot of QT, so maybe the problem is with the QT genre, and I need to be reading urban novels instead lol)

On another note, grimtranslations are doing a GREAT job at TL-ing. It is such a smooth read. <<less

Read it if you want to:

  1. Feel hurt for the protagonist.
  2. Get angry at the ML, his family, and friends.
  3. See how the protagonist and ML ultimately get back together by the ML's groveling
Personally, I didn't enjoy, nor did I believe the protagonist's reasons, for how passive he was in communicating with the ML. The protagonist, to me, pities himself too much without actually expressing his problems to the ML. This could work if it the protagonist not speaking up felt credible, but it felt more like the protagonist just being insecure (the... more>> insecurity doesn't quite mesh with how decisive he is so another point of not being credible). For what it's worth, how the protagonist acts while in the relationship is basically a lesson on what not to do in a relationship. <<less

Read it in one day. The first few chapters were really heart breaking. MC comes with a lot of emotional baggage. ML was a douche. Period. I wish the author had started the story with when they first met so we could properly see how they fell for each other instead of there being a flashback on every chapter. I felt a bit disconnected since we couldn´t properly see what occurred and lead to the current situation. We only got MC´s perspective, due to that, it was hard to sympathise... more>> with ML. Or understand him.

Another thing is, MC is constantly being called shameless, but he´s not? Sure his past actions were shameless, but again, it was only seen in flashbacks. The author selling him as a shameless protagonist felt forced, since his personality after chapter 1 changed 180. Which was a disappointment since I love those types but unfortunately he wasn't. If I were to describe MC, he is a calm and humble person.

The title is misleading. ML is not a tsundere. He was just too self-centered, arrogant and lacked empathy to his surrounding. How can you live with someone for 7 years and not realise that they are on the brink of exhaustion? That your loved one is being mistreated by your friends and family?

There are plenty of 'second chance' stories like this here in NU, what all ML's have in common is their admittance and acknowledge of their past mistake. The ML here on the other hand SEEMED TO HAVE NO UTTER CLUE WHAT HE DID WRONG. Until finally MC said it word for word. Like wtf? How up your ass can you be? Which is why his act of seeking redemption didn't feel enough.

But I rate this 4 stars because of the undertone of realism in it. But then again maybe I'll change it later because I really hated how one single misunderstanding lasted throughout the WHOLE story. Ugh <<less

Damn. That was one hell of a ride. It was truly a dog-blood novel. I was spurting blood left and right because of Xu Bai Chuan's fickleness. It's the typical 'I didn't realize I loved you until you left' plot line. Pretty cliche, the gong (Tang Jin) is shitty as hell, the MC (Xu Bai Chuan) is s*upid for getting back together with him, and the second male lead deserves justice. But the translation was really good, so kudos to Grim for that. I wish the ML suffered more, but... more>> that might just be me being unnecessarily cruel. It's a really short read, it took about 30 minutes for me, so just read it. I'll give a warning to those who have high-blood pressure in advance.

Also, can we just have a novel where the MC doesn't go back to an emotionally abusing relationship? They always say "We're done", "I'm moving on", but not one of them have actually moved on. They always go back. And can the second male lead also get a happy ending? I really felt bad for Chen Xu. He genuinely liked Xu Bai Chuan, but he didn't even get a chance while Tang Jin, that abusing scum, got so many chances to take him back. Also, the side characters were treated like tr*sh. They were there for their purpose, then just disappeared out of the storyline. I want more Luo Junyu and Xu Bai Chuan interactions. <<less

It's an entertaining read, and certainly not what you expected in the beginning.

Spoiler

I wouldn't say the gong is scum like what some readers are calling him. It's a series of misunderstandings one after the other, that when you get to the end, you'll appreciate the sugar and fluff.

Overall, I enjoyed the ride and kudos to the translator for picking this up.

The translation is perfect, so thank you.

So, the story is bad. The ML is the worst and I wanna slap the MC because can you not get back together with a neglectful, abuse-tolerant, garbage man? Surely it's not too hard considering all the pain you've been through.

ML has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He is NOT a tsundere if there ever was one. The author tries to explain it, but honey, we're not blind.

Please, just one, ONE story that the MC leaves the scum ex and becomes independent or ends up... more>> with a good person.

Despite the chill and casual way the author wrote from MC's POV, this novel is actually quite poetic and sombre. The translator also did a good job in conveying the tone that the author wanted to express. Initially I thought this novel would be a melodramatic recount by an equally melodramatic MC with victim mentality, but oh boy I was so wrong.

Reading about his casual contemplation about the mental-breaking things that happened to him made me sad, it was more heartbreaking than if MC vented everything in his POV.

I wish... more>> I was the one who saved him first instead of ML. That guy doesn't know how to count his blessing. I also don't like the way people around ML tried to make MC regret.

Spoiler

His parents made MC lose his new job and his new friends.

[collapse]

About the time skip... I think it's necessary, otherwise I wouldn't believe ML genuinely liked MC if that time skip didn't happen. Also, both of them needed a break from each other first. ML still has too many entanglements behind him while MC was still so raw and unconvinced of his worth.

Unfortunately, I read the main story first before the extra... It could've lessen the pain. If you're a new reader, I'd suggest you to read the extra first. <<less

Ouch. Ouch. I can't describe how much I loved the first thirty-something chapters of this story. I literally couldn't put it down until I was zombie-like with the lack of sleep. My favourite theme of wife chasing crematorium, and the MC, the MC was just wow! I wanted to love him to death. His character - his strength, his self-irony, his self-control, his freedom - everything about him just called for my heart. He was the guy whose smile was more heart-breaking than someone else's tears. His perseverance was admirable... more>> but his decisiveness when leaving the ML was even more deserving of respect.

The ML, with all his a*sholish behaviour, didn't seem irredeemable. Especially when it turned out he didn't target the MC. I was sooooo looking forward to him earning forgiveness.

The green tea b*tch was really good, exactly the guy you love to hate. The story of the friend was low-key and sad; once you figured out what was going on with him, you could only sigh.

So much goodness. And then the author scrapped it all with the sh*tty ending. It was not an ending at all. It was... something. First it was "it's not what you think" cliche - oh no, everything cold, mean and callous about the ML's behaviour was not really that, he really loved the MC, he just... whatever. His excuse is so weak it's kinda insulting to think that the readers should just eat an explanation like that.

And then the horrible, terrible, no good cliche of the ML self-sacrificingly rescuing the MC from a mortal danger. Please, just no. It's too pathetic to use such means to bring the the MC and the ML back together. But right, it took two chapters instead of twenty or thirty that might be needed if we really got to read about a believable way of them getting together. Two lazy, boring, cliched, psychologically hollow chapters that killed a great story.

Disappointed AF. <<less

I don't understand why this has so many bad reviews, so I felt compelled to write my own.

I don't care what anyone else says--I liked it. This was a realistic story with realistic characters, and although the author glosses over some pretty important stuff, you can infer most of it from the information she gives you.

The MC isn't your typical lotus flower protag, and the ML isn't your typical cold, unfeeling gong with no substance. Every character in the story has a different (and quite deep) personality, and you... more>> feel what they feel while reading. You don't get the MC pursues/is pursued by ML until the end, most of the story is about the MC enjoying life away from the ML, and I enjoyed reading about it. "Tsundere" really isn't the right word for the gong, more like "emotionally constipated and too proud to admit any of his emotions", whereas the MC is emotionally constipated and too self-deprecating to realize he is loved--this is for a good reason, too. Lack of communication is the downfall of their relationship, but they move past it.

Ending felt rushed but its not that bad (HE btw). We never really did learn why the ML did what he did to the MC, but overall, I liked it. I think you should read the first few chapters before you decide this isn't for you, because it really picks up after the 3-4th chapter and got me so invested that I read it in a day. <<less

To those hesitant after seeing the reviews, I just wanna say one thing: if you wanna read a painful love, read it. If you're looking for a fluffy romantic read, dont come here.

About the story: its a story of how a couple in a tormenting relationship finds themselves again, re-ignite the love and heal themselves. Its about their journey of healing, their journey of separation and reunion. Not a story of their couple life, not a story of how they fell in love with each other at first.

Reason... more>> its worth 4 stars:

1. Expressions, emotions and pain were well written, I could feel my heart breaking over their love.

2. 7 years of misunderstanding, I know some readers cant take it, but honestly, the misunderstandings stemed from somewhere, it was cause of the multiple factors that led right up to it (friends, gong family, uke's past).

It isnt just some simple misunderstanding that pops out of nowhere, it actually happened as a result of actions (read the book to find out).

Also, when some reviews say "omg can they just talk!!??", I cant agree with them. Based on the prideful seme and inferior uke, its a fantasy to get them to talk about their real feelings early. When you get to know the uke, you get to feel his pov, his severely lacking self esteeem/ pride, and his point of "afriad of others' love". Yall have to understand, as someone with a past as nasty and traumatising as the uke, baring his true emotions in front of others (esp a prideful person) is basically a fantasy.

3. It shouldnt be called "how to deal with tsundere gong", it should be "how to abuse readers and the couple".

It shows that not all romances are easy, lovely, fluffy, smooth. This shows the other side of romance, one that is dark, painful, heart wretching. Its a pretty fresh outlook!

Reason for that lost 1 star:

1. This does not depict "tsundere", more of "prideful", "egoistical". But well, I can see why the term "tsundere" was used.

2. Longer would have been nice... more of their future lovey dovey moments would be cute <<less

I was pretty leery of reading this one due to the mixed-reviews and clear case of "heavy miscommunication issue" between the main leads. I tend to find CNovels' ridiculous focus on dragging on miscommunication in romantic relationship as one of the only plot points quite trite and overdone.

Nevertheless, I felt like reading forced angst/melodrama (chomps melon seeds) and it was great.

If you know what you're getting into, it's not a bad read:

  • melodrama, extremely long angsty relationship, a shitton misunderstandings and pretty unbelievably contrived lack of communication
  • lots of grovelling on the ML trying to get back the MC
  • lots of self-hatred on the part of the MC
  • did I mention lack of communication? FOR SEVEN YEARS (and then some)
  • even their breakup was filled with miscommunication until MC "lost control"
I thought the ending... more>> was pretty good and I'm glad there was a second break in the middle.

I know a lot of people think the ML doesn't deserve the MC, but I thought his side wasn't that bad (though SEVEN YEARS is pretty ridiculously long for the author to set)

Spoiler

From the beginning, you know that the MC threatened the ML into being with him, thus the ML was distrustful of the MC - their relationship did not start with mutual agreement. While the ML shouldn't have treated the MC like that, the MC also never communicated his dissatisfaction (MC had his reasons/guilt, but this point stands). If you don't communicate your unhappiness, you shouldn't expect the other person to magically know.

Thus, this was a bed that both people had a hand in making.

I was initially concenred when the author wrote that the MC was beaten by the ML in Chapter 1 of the story, but this never comes up again in any of the MC's unhappy memories (other than a mutual fight they had) so I believe it's safe to assume that the MC was not actually physically abused throughout their relationship.

Yes, this is the angsty sh*t I signed up for. You got the heartbroken MC finally cutting off the cancerous lump of a ML and the grovelling slag chasing him back.

Interesting that the story starts off with their breaking point (saves my anger ulcers from forming so I'm glad).

The fact that the author has to defend the scum gong in the post-chapter segments really tells you how much of a douche he is HAHAHA. Admittedly in the extras you do see their history from the ML's perspective, and I... more>> do concede that they both had made mistakes that led to persistent and frustrating misunderstanding tormenting both parties, so I can empathise with the ML more.

All this goes to show how necessary honest communication is to a relationship, and the damaging impact of letting misunderstandings persist for that long. Life lessons people. : (

The ending was a bit abrupt (just 3 chapters after a time skip) ; I felt like I needed a better understanding of what happened in that gap and the development of their thought processes.

Cheng Xu (second ML??) barely made a dent to the story, I was rather confused. Perhaps the extras for him would explain, but I haven't read them. Also... did Xu Bai Chuan's parents actually lock him in a bas**ent to the point of starvation 'cause they were arguing with each other?! Wtf did I read that right? <<less

I LOVE LOVE THIS. It struck the right places of my gentle but angsty kokoro (heart). Read if you want:

1) MC finally tries to prioritize himself by leaving the relationship, the city, his job (basically everything that connects with the ML) and starting anew.

2) ML regretting and then doing everything to get back together with MC using sincerity and patience.

... more>> 3) MC being strong, decisive and not letting ML or anyone (Im looking at you mom, white lotus, and friend) have their way against him.

4) A long time to actually heal wounds so HE! (yay)

Spoiler

Needed 3 and 1/2 years after the breakup for the MC to heal, the ML to grow, and both of them to get what they want the most

[collapse]

Also, about the ML...

Spoiler

It is not completely his fault that things turned out this way (still, it is about 80% his fault lol) Anyway, the extras are in his pov which explains a lot of things (why he did those things). He thought that the MC betrayed him for his parents so he thought that the reason why MC is staying with him was to keep watch over him then report to his parents. He never trusted MC's "I like you". And the MC always tries to put this nonchalant and unbothered facade that increases the doubts of ML. ML felt like MC did not really care. Anywaaay after reading the extras, I pity both of them. They love each other but the misunderstandings are hindering them *sigh*.

There are 4 extras: ML's past, ML's future, Cheng Xu (friend) 's past and Cheng Xu's dream.

Heart-breaking, low emotional IQ ML, dog-blood, and DRAMA.

The gong is NOT tsundere, I came in expecting to read about a cute tsundere (like the Japanese stereotype of people who are outwardly mean, but have a soft heart, and thought that those features of a gong trying his best to woo the MC in embarrassment and pride was gonna be cute) my expectations were crushed, the gong is just an ass. ML is a piece of crap.

I highly doubt that he'd ever really love the MC as he had claimed.

I'm sure that he's not s*upid, he KNOWS how much the MC has been suffering, and he never gave a sh*t until they broke up. His claims of loving MC at the time sound utterly ridiculous. Ignoring your partner, bad-mouthing your partner, allowing them to be blatantly bullied in front of you, not sticking up for your partner, giving zero emotional support or care for your partner... can anyone seriously believe that he even loves/loved his partner? You can't chalk that up to "misunderstandings" and call it a day. 7 years, ML is NOT BLIND/DEAF/s*upid, he's just a purebred scum. (Don't pick scum up from the tr*sh). There's a special kind of people tr*sh that acts this way, and please, PLEASE RUN or DUMP them if you spot them in real life.

MC's lack of proactive communication during their relationship in the past also irked me. Don't take this lying down!!!!

(WHat really pissed me off was the author's comments and explanations of how the gong actually acts "sweet" or how "lovey-dovey'' the couple was. What. The. F--, the author needs help, I'm comforted by the string of comments under each chapter that says that the ML is a piece of tr*sh and utterly scum. At least I know that others too did not buy into this scam. And the only thing worse than the explanations were the promises, they kept me going and I got cheated the whole way.

Pros?

Heart-break, good novel to make you feel sad and pissed. Heartaches for MC, (although, like, MC, you know you could've said something right? or communicate? I mean, yeah, you might be afraid to bring it up, but it's better than to suffer in silence.) Actually really good at immersing you in the drama, and dog blood, it really left a bitter taste in my heart at the ending.

Short Version of my review:

MC is a poor dear unfortunate enough to be in love with a self-absorbed ML. After years of waiting for ML to love him he finally gives up and decides to leave but instead of being left alone, what ensues is a painful to watch game of tug of war involving the red string of fate.

Long Version:

ML neglected MC. He never once displayed affection nor care for our little darling (the incredibly imaginative) Chuan Chuan (MC). He claims to have “always” loved MC but then he... more>> never cherished him in the years they were together. And this just infuriates the hell out of me.

Don’t get me wrong, I think author-sama is GOOD because of he/she was able to make MC’s thoughts and grievances resonate well with the readers (ME! ME! ME! I f*cking cried rivers. And it was MTL.).

Their relationship prior to the “breakup” was MC always catering to ML’s wants and needs. MC also inadvertently had to play the role of the clown entertaining ML’s friends while being ML’s Mom’s errand boy.

I can’t call ML a tsundere because a tsundere for me is generally an unapproachable guy that you gradually warm up to because he’s opening up and making significant efforts to change but I didn’t get to see the process of ML evolving into a better version of himself. In my opinion, he didnt try hard enough to earn back MC’s love. <<less

it would be so good if this novel ended up at chapter 39.

sorry author, your notes don't make me empathise with that scum ML. if you create an unlikeable character, that's what it is, unlikeable. the intentions in your head have no appeal for normal adult readers, shouldn't have appeal for the MC either.

Edit: I was so p*ssed off when I finished reading... anyway, the writing and translation are good. 'til some point in the story, spending your time reading is worth it. well, there's a problem with the... more>> ML being completely cold and insensitive to the MC's (only human) demands, after being so sensitive and proactive, saving the MC's life (and becoming MC's everything).

another issue for me it was the way the author choose to tell us important aspects and pov from ML and 2nd ML's using notes or extras. why don't just put it straight into the normal text? after you get so disgusted about them, reading the notes and extras is the author face-slapping the readers. not ok.
