After dying alone in a mental institution, Fang Junrong discovered that she was the evil mother-in-law in a prominent family doting novel. Her daughter-in-law was the female lead who was loved by all.

In the novel, the female lead was kind and nice, and the male lead loved her so much that he’d die for her in a heartbeat.

Her future father-in-law doted on her and treated her better than his own daughter.

Fang Junrong, the evil mother-in-law, was the only one who didn’t care for her. She had gotten the evil character’s script and wanted to set the female lead up every chance that she got and finally landed herself in the mental institution.

After she was rebirthed and facing her son who wanted her blessings, Fang Junrong tore up the script. Whoever wanted the role of the evil mother-in-law could have it! She was going to get a divorce and take half of the money, then she’d figure out where she wanted to go from there alongside her daughter!

Before reading this, keep in mind that it's a novel universe, logic has signed out and clichés are aplenty.

Though it makes a delightful vengeance face-slapping read, it also has numerous flaws.
The spotlight on the main character and supporting leads is very stark compared to cannon fodders, bystanders, and antagonists. To picture it, the protagonist comes in 3D, the supporting leads are 2D and the rest are children's scribbles without colors.
Cannon fodders down the line are carbon copies of each other with different backgrounds and appearances. So the more explicit the MC & Co. Were in their defined characteristics and character growth, the more you could feel the neglect of the others.
The face-slapping will become eventually also slightly repetitive, as the cannon fodders seem to be lined up neatly with their palms stretched out for a beating.

That being said, the way it's narrated is fun and can evoke enough emotions to keep you engaged. The MC is a rarely seen one, as many wouldn't use a female protagonist in her 40ties, with 2 children and an estranged husband. She's one strong boss lady who, unlike most female protagonists that are in need of external support. Her OP hacks aside, her execution and planning were top-notch.

Though the last special is rather distasteful and I'd simply skip it, just as a piece of advice since it ended on a nice note.
Spoiler

It further knocks down the main culprits by a few notches, which I felt was unnecessary to spoil the sweetness from the previous story about the adopted daughter's budding romance. Plus it was ghoulish overkill with one of the minor cannon fodders benefitting from their demise.

I really enjoyed this, tho it belongs in the ranks of fast food reads, it's very entertaining and has a lot of satisfying points. There is some inconsistencies and lacking aspects, and I think it was a somewhat rushed ending, but including various kinds of love and no forgiveness was a big plus. Sorta bummed that the real daughter didn't get an extra at the end.

Overall good, but towards the end it just felt like scenarios were very fabricated just to add a face slap. They also really didn’t add anything to the plot so felt very pointless. For example:

Slight Spoiler:

The woman on the train with her bear child, the random guy that filmed the townspeople kneeling etc.

So. Before I cast any judgement, I would like you all to acquaint yourselves with the mechanics and plot progression of a typical "Rebirth of [something or other]" novel. Fair warning: It commonly has the effect of killing your braincells, and the more you read, the more you wonder if the author's are just robots operating on copy-paste for every rebirth/reincarnation story. (Believe me, I've read at least 40+ of these rebirth novels, and a lot are very underwhelming.)

Not to say that there aren't any good ones, but 95%... more>> of the time they're unoriginal, poorly written, hellishly long, and overall really dumb. Of course, if you're solely reading for the face-slapping and instant gratification fix, it might be ok. Maybe.

So, onto the technical details of the mary sue (or gary stu) character who can either be the protag or the antag. The one thing in common is that they are usually an adopted-into-rich-family white lotus sister who charms everyone around them and wrecks all her enemies' plan (of whom is usually the legitimate daughter along with a trail of cannon fodders). These mary sue's usually have the hallmark of owning a system or a space, and miraculously have these priceless pill formulas that have the effect of beautifying or detoxifying or basically any other OP effect you can think of. There is also the offshoot in the form of the Michelin 5 star chef mary sue, the farming mary sue, the raising cubs mary sue, the streaming anchor mary sue, and just the overall OP golden finger mary sue.

As with any mary sue, they must have at least 230958 followers and 1294 admirers (or else they are fired), so really, they are working EXTREMELY hard. As a result, there's the mary sue camp and the villain camp (that is ultimately defeated because they are big, bad and evil). Meanwhile, the mary sue's go on to live their happily ever after.

Right. Sound familiar? So, in this case, our MC is the retaliator against the mary sue, which is pretty common, except that this time SHE gets the magical space and the OP-ness and the face slapping..... so she might actually be the real mary sue. Hmm.

I could see how it could be interesting relying on the "evil mother-in-law" scenario, but obviously the author doesn't want to be original, so we just see another poorly planned face slapping that somehow "works" because everyone's IQ in the story is in the negatives. For another, the characters are also paper cutouts, and the setting of the character, such as the tragic backstory of the MC, becomes more like an info dump and not at all like emotional storytelling. Sometimes, the described actions actually conflicts with what the author says they are trying to accomplish, so it's just very inexplicable.

Essentially, this is just a very bland, cliche novel that you could do better without. <<less

MC is amazing!

She really do justice for her own death and the miserable life she and her daughter in her past life.
I like the concept of the magical jade. It was connected to MC through life and death. I thought it would be like other novels where they can owned it and kill the real owner. At this case, when MC died, the jade also lost its purpose. What a wonderful thing!

When I first read it, I thought theres little to no romance. I didn't expect that at the middle of the novel ML pop out.

Also! The last part was quite a surprise twist!

There's actually two story

  • Where Jiang Yage (The Supposed to be Daughter in law) was a protagonist
  • And where MC is the protagonist.
I rate this a star lower not just because of loopholes everywhere. It was also because there are chapters that was boring to read. I thought those chapter are not significant at all to progress the story.

Anyway, the story is good. I recommend it!

This is typical dog blood novel with many face slapping here and there. The plot wasn't something new: MC came back to the past, managed to avoid the bad ending with her scheme, successed at accumulating wealth by the help of a cheat, became a winner of life, and finally lived happily ever after. MC's character was kinda refreshing, probably because I rarely read middle age woman in her 40s as MC. But of course because of her cheat, she didn't look like in her 40s (typical, right?).

The face slapping... more>> and revenge were so satisfying. Kinda pitying MC's son (Li Shize) a bit (really, just a tiny bit) but he indeed really deserved his contribution.

Spoiler

What hurt us the most wasn't some cruel action of a stranger towards us (I'm talking about Jiang YaGe) but the betrayal of our loved ones (I'm talking about Li Shize). MC indeed hated Jiang YaGe but he hated Li Shize more.

Li Sizhe was MC's pride and he was a filial son and a good brother before meeting Jiang YaGe. But after dating Jiang YaGe, he always sided with her unreservedly and hurted both of MC and his sister (Li Xinyun) in the name of love. He also indirectly killed both of them in the past. If his victim was only MC, she probably didn't hate him that much but unfortunately, Li Xinyun was also a victim. MC loved her daughter so much so that's why she couldn't forgive Li Shize till the end.

Yes, MC never forgive her son although he already regretted it so much. It's understandable though. Ironically, he finally knew how MC felt after being betrayed by his daughter in the future. How fitting.

[collapse]

If you wonder if there was ML in this novel... yes, there was. Unfortunately, the romance was very scarce.

Spoiler

ML was Jiang Dexian, MC's former assistant and later a successful CEO. He was 12 years younger than MC (it didn't matter though because MC was forever looked like in her 20s, right?). What made ML unique was he also reborn to the past almost at the same time as MC.

In the past, MC changed his life and he admired her so much but after he learnt about her tragic ending, he began to exact revenge to MC's son and husband. In the present, he chose to stay by her side as her assistant but later, he decided to build his own company so he could be worthy of being her boyfriend.

Unfortunately, ML and MC only ended up together in the very last chapter and there's nothing more after that. So yeah, that's a bit sucks.

[collapse]

The ending was quite satisfying but I hope I could see Li Xinyun's side story too aside from Zhong Yi. <<less

A few things. Firstly, there is a reason that this novel is not a romance genre, there is very little romance until the very end where you see some romance to polish of the ending.

Secondly, great female lead. She has a nice personality, good character, decisive, and strong willed! No wishy washy stuff, the MC knows what she wants and how she wants it.

Thirdly, decent face slapping. It doesnt go over the top with the face slapping, there is enough of it however to fully satisfy the readers.

One potential demerit... more>> is that some characters have the *spellbound* effect for the antagonist without much reason. This is never fully explained or properly addressed. I do not mind this too much though, I take it as though the MC and the author don’t know either.

Overall, enjoyable read, and the book is completely translated too so there is no need to wait between chapters. <<less

First off, I want to issue a warning. If you are coming here for romance, you will be waiting for a while. As I am writing this review, the romance has literally just begun.

The beginning of the story focuses on revenge. It has a lot of dog blood (which borderline made me want to spit blood), but the face slapping is pretty satisfying.

Spoiler

Also there is no redemption arc for her family, if you were wondering.

[collapse]

After her revenge ends, the story is basically just about the MC accumulating wealth. This is like 150 or so of the chapter. It gets a bit slow here, which is why my rating lowered a bit. Then it starts the romance; though I'm not to sure how it's going to end since there are only signs of it right now.

Overall I would rate it a high 4/5 which I rounded up to a 5/5. <<less

It started out ok, but became too boring. There is no challenge for the MC at all. I liked her disposition and she isn't dumb like most rebirth villainess. But apart from her, all the other characters are very plain. Infact, if you remove MC's OPness, she would just be another elegant woman in a novel. That's it.

It is nice to see an MC who doesn’t try to get along with scum ML and just directly divorces this tr*sh, drop the as*hole of a son (honestly it is very cringe to see classic male lead go s*upid for the female lead in other novels). It does get really wish-fulfilment typical plot armor so basically we just see the protagonist aura and cheats carrying her in the later period.

still nice perspective.

IT’S A 3, I MARKED IT WRONG. I loved this at the beginning, but as time went on, this novel became annoying to me.

I ignored the loop holes at the beginning, like how there wasn’t any bad rumors going around despite x, y and z, or how people don’t actually have this low of an EQ. There’s also a bad understanding of the starvation business model (or whatever it’s called, but I know how it works, and you’re supposed to sell it high) and so many more other things that... more>> don’t make sense.

However, it’s pretty clear that this novel is a novel for people who love attention, and can’t stand being without it.
Spoiler

Like she personally oversees the entire first week of her launch overseas at a mall. Like, normally a character like that would send an assistant at most, if not even lower level management. After the first few days of going in person, she goes in disguise to see what’s up (mask, scarf, hat, sunglasses), and then reveals herself to a dedicated customer and makes a big show of it before disappearing into the crowd. Then she goes again the next day and hears a few sus things and handles that. Also she scrolls through the comment on what they say about the products.

[collapse]
Everyone is trying to get with her, she’s incredibly famous, her best friends are going on and on about the rainbow farts ppl are blowing towards her. It’s just wayy to freaking much like get over yourself, author.

Again, great at the beginning, but it just kept going downhill after reaching the peak. The author should have started concluding pretty much everything after that point, but they didn’t.

After characters are kicked to the ground, I don’t really care about them anymore unless they cause the MC trouble which moves the plot (as opposed to being part of the plot). But the author wants to make sure we know how much of a bit*h everyone is and how their lives suck now. I don’t get it.

Lastly, the characters blend into each other a bit. Not a ton, but it gets boring and repetitive due to that. <<less

It's interesting and kinda unique. A mother rebirthed to slap-face and take back what was her. The MC (stepmom) is really badass and completely roasted her bastard of a husband and son, and of course the bit** of a daughter in law.

The translation is smooth, easy to understand. However a big drawback is that the translator divided 1 chapter into multiple small chapters (like 3 chapters of the translator = 1 chapter of the original one).

All in all, this novel is okay to pass time, but after a while it's... more>> kinda boring, the situation is predictable <<less

The face slapping in this novel is legit awesome, it's the best I've ever seen so far, there is literally face slapping in every chapter. All in all this is a good story to read when you're not in the mood and want something to cheer you up, I'd recommend this story to anyone to read, the author really has a way with words, which makes me fall in love with each chapter I swear you won't be bored when you read this.

Spoiler

The MC returned 8 years into the past before all the tragedy befall her and her daughter, the MC husband and BBQ son choose a girl over both the MC and her daughter (imo that YaGe girl is a complete b- that uses her fake tears to make people feel sorry for her) so anyways both men fell for her tricks which made the MC daughter committed su*cide and the MC herself ended up in a mental asylum, now she's back for revenge she planned every trap for them down to the T, destroying their lives but at the same time ruining their chances of a backing by causing trouble for the characters that sided with them in her past life, even though I wouldn't call that trouble since they deserved it. MC used every word that they've ever spoke against them, which was the funny parts in the novel, she also adopted a girl that was once YaGe bff but that person YaGe tried to sabotage her best friend chances of having a good life, she hired Zhang Bi to poison MC to make her emotions go out of order which will make her snap and angry at any little thing, which helped contributed in sending her to the mental institution, she even made an underworld boss fell for her, and made him did something to her daughter which made her commit su*cide, she has done a lot of thing in her past life, that's why imo she deserved everything that came to her, especially that BBQ-pork son, he even went against his father, the only person on his side for that girl, he cursed out his mother and his sister, just what kind of son and brother is he? Which when the times comes MC disowning him only made me feel proud of her. This is all I can give read the story to find out more details I'm sure you won't regret it

Amazing story with a somewhat different plot. MC is a smart business woman with her daughter and yeah adopted daughter is also good. This is not a romance novel and MC doesn't forgive her husband and son and I hoped that her son was also as good as her daughters. A decent read.

Rebirth, revenge, and face-slapping. While the plot is overused, the author has small deviations from the typical books. The beginning is also interesting because of the MC's personality. The MC would use her IQ to flip the situation in her favor. She isn't cold and she knows how to make connections/socialize.

Romance: there isn't any yet, however, I got a hint of whom the ML MIGHT be. He seems like a typical ML personality but there hasn't been many scenes yet.

Plot: I also have to mention that the story is becoming... more>> repetitive and slowing down at the halfway point. This is why I'm taking a break from the story. I feel like the revenge plot is slowing down here and romance is going to develop. But I believe there is unneeded fluff that could've been removed.

Like one of the other reviews, I should mention that the translated chapters isn't even 20 raw chapters. So there should be about 200-300 translated chapters. I would give it a 5 but the story falls off a bit in the middle, or else I would've MTL until the end. <<less

This novel was one of my first novel where main character is middle-aged women. Thus I was very excited for the story. I was intrigued how the MC will act because most of novels I've read were from POV of young and teen.

But as the story went by the author kept trying to somehow decrease the age of MC by making her physically young. This made every interaction MC had with others from the view of young person rather than middle-aged woman. It was the biggest letdown for me. Every... more>> time MC used the bracelet I kept on asking why. The bracelet part was not necessary (maybe in the future it will have some significance but where I'm at, it feels useless prop other than making MC young and beautiful. It would have been better if the setting was based in reality not the supernatural.

The revenge, if I can even call it was seriously was less impactful. <<less
