When the shut-in girl Terakomari, or Komari for short, woke up from her slumber, she had been appointed as a commander! And if that wasn’t enough, the corps she holds responsibility over is known for overthrowing and mu*dering their superiors! Even though she had been born into a prestigious vampire family, because she can’t drink any blood, she possesses close to no athletic or physical abilities, she’s rather small for her age, and she can’t even use any magic.
Met with endless despair, her trusted (?) maid Vill comes to the rescue.
“Please leave it to me, Komari-sama. I will definitely make sure you won’t be found out!”
Thus begins the comical fantasy portraying Komari’s struggles. She’s a shut-in, but she can actually do it if she puts her mind to it!?

That being said, the world building is subpar and rather vague at times. TypeMoon and Fate series fans will recognize the various references and themes borrowed such as jewel/mana crystal catalysts and spells akin to Gandr. These elements along the the world's magic system are introduced with minimal explanation and hence feel rather lacking and abrupt at times. However, part of this seems rather deliberate to convey the mysterious circumstances behind Komari's abilities and her past. Similarly, the fantasy races and world explanation are extremely terse. It felt like Kotei wanted to get the ban*l explanations out of the way as fast as possible so he could focus on Komari. Personally, I found that this worked to his benefit as it tied in well with the theme of having a shut-in character. Also, I think it's better to get readers interested into the story before introducing finer world building details as info-dumping a reader is a great way to bore them.
Regardless, don't let the subpar world-building get into your way of giving this novel a read. What Kotei and Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon really excels at is it's character building. The relationships between all the characters in Volume 1 are well thought out and their motivations are entirely relatable. The juxtaposition between fantasy elements and an inhuman vampire protagonist really helps to sell Riichu's message of what it means to be human and to have a heart. Sure, they're still are some yuri, fan-service, and lolicon-esque themes, but nothing is so extreme to detract from its premise. And I think fans of Dungeon Defense will enjoy Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon. It's much more heartwarming and of a lighter tone since we have a cute, loli-protagonist instead of the charmastic, psychopath that is Dantalian, but I think the character relationships in Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon don't lose out (keep in mind that stories, premises, and circumstances surrounding Dantalian and Komori are almost polar opposites).
To those scared about an OP-protagonist with nuclear-bomber thick plot armor, don't worry. Yes, Komari is beyond OP, but this is one of the first novels where I found this to be handled well. Komari, in fact, has no idea of her abilities which prevents the novel from devolving into an "OP-chaddess or Dragon Ball Z-Syndrome" type of novel. This also really works to hype up fights. It's like Killua's switch flips in Hunter X Hunter; that's when you know things are getting real.
Lastly, CClaw Translations have done a thorough job in translating the novel, and I look forward to future releases. Volume 1 was a gem. Volume 2 was beauty.
and probably turn worse. But this, it caught my interest. The protagonist slowly grows and her subordinates are really praising her a lot and I thought at first it was that same trope... more>>
