“…Fueh? W-What is it?”

When the shut-in girl Terakomari, or Komari for short, woke up from her slumber, she had been appointed as a commander! And if that wasn’t enough, the corps she holds responsibility over is known for overthrowing and mu*dering their superiors! Even though she had been born into a prestigious vampire family, because she can’t drink any blood, she possesses close to no athletic or physical abilities, she’s rather small for her age, and she can’t even use any magic.

Met with endless despair, her trusted (?) maid Vill comes to the rescue.

“Please leave it to me, Komari-sama. I will definitely make sure you won’t be found out!”

Thus begins the comical fantasy portraying Komari’s struggles. She’s a shut-in, but she can actually do it if she puts her mind to it!?

Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon is extremely well executed. Kotei has clearly thought out the human story that he wants to tell, and the fantasy world and setting works to accentuate what he has to say. In short, Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon is a tale of relationships and the human heart that most people can find something relate to.

Spoiler

That being said, the world building is subpar and rather vague at times. TypeMoon and Fate series fans will recognize the various references and themes borrowed such as jewel/mana crystal catalysts and spells akin to Gandr. These elements along the the world's magic system are introduced with minimal explanation and hence feel rather lacking and abrupt at times. However, part of this seems rather deliberate to convey the mysterious circumstances behind Komari's abilities and her past. Similarly, the fantasy races and world explanation are extremely terse. It felt like Kotei wanted to get the ban*l explanations out of the way as fast as possible so he could focus on Komari. Personally, I found that this worked to his benefit as it tied in well with the theme of having a shut-in character. Also, I think it's better to get readers interested into the story before introducing finer world building details as info-dumping a reader is a great way to bore them.

Regardless, don't let the subpar world-building get into your way of giving this novel a read. What Kotei and Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon really excels at is it's character building. The relationships between all the characters in Volume 1 are well thought out and their motivations are entirely relatable. The juxtaposition between fantasy elements and an inhuman vampire protagonist really helps to sell Riichu's message of what it means to be human and to have a heart. Sure, they're still are some yuri, fan-service, and lolicon-esque themes, but nothing is so extreme to detract from its premise. And I think fans of Dungeon Defense will enjoy Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon. It's much more heartwarming and of a lighter tone since we have a cute, loli-protagonist instead of the charmastic, psychopath that is Dantalian, but I think the character relationships in Hiikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon don't lose out (keep in mind that stories, premises, and circumstances surrounding Dantalian and Komori are almost polar opposites).

To those scared about an OP-protagonist with nuclear-bomber thick plot armor, don't worry. Yes, Komari is beyond OP, but this is one of the first novels where I found this to be handled well. Komari, in fact, has no idea of her abilities which prevents the novel from devolving into an "OP-chaddess or Dragon Ball Z-Syndrome" type of novel. This also really works to hype up fights. It's like Killua's switch flips in Hunter X Hunter; that's when you know things are getting real.

Lastly, CClaw Translations have done a thorough job in translating the novel, and I look forward to future releases. Volume 1 was a gem. Volume 2 was beauty.

I've read the first volume of the official translation.

"Mediocre..."

"Inoffensive but also inconsequential"

I believe both of those would properly describe this LN. It's not bad. It's kind of funny and not terribly written. It can be amusing. At its core it's one of those comedy misunderstanding type stories, and the comedy itself is fine. The thing is, it throws away its premise at some point into the first volume. And it's not anything you wouldn't see coming, really. There are plenty of signs. When it gets serious, it quickly becomes a... more>> weak tropefest, and the thing is the author can't take this reveal back anymore. It's going to become a crutch forever. What could have been an intelligently written, somewhat unique work, quickly turns into, "Well, I can go halfway and then just redeem any inconsistencies with this ridiculous supercrutch I have."

Overall, I was tempted to leave a 4/5 at first, but honestly I can't in good conscience say this ended up being good. It can be a fun read, but that's as good as it gets. <<less

The world-building is quite weak in my opinion, due to the fact that too many elements in the narrative don't fit the setting of the fantasy world. These elements are : Japanese and French food, culture, talking about 'human heart' eventhough they're vampires and some more that you might discover while reading the story. Since I care about world-building, I would have to remove a star from my rating.

The overall story and character development, however, can make up for those downsides. Seriousness blends together with comedy, it is perfectly executed.... more>> Though, the plot itself is quite simple and easy to predict, especially if you notice some essential pieces of information in the story.

Translation is good; nothing more to expand on the subject. It is simply good. <<less

I share the same sentiments with the post before mine, this novel is amazing. Albeit being at the cost of sounding informal and breaking through the 4th wall at times, the comedy and flow of the story is a head above the rest.

At the risk of sounding repetitive, the humor, lord... if you're a fan of monologue reflection and feeling as if the character's a living embodiment of a mood at times, then you came to the right story.

I don't now how much tired I am reading the same isekai tropes over-over again, But this Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon was a great to finish its 2 volume, it's character introduction in vol 1 are good start for me to remember some of them, normally I only Focus on MC side and never paying attention to other character involve, But this time I was enjoying how the other character Interact with komari especially Vill and Sakuna which is my favorite part. The part of Show not tell were I... more>> see reason komari was powerless and the antagonist back story side, which I think its obviously showing what's gonna happen next but to my surprise I was wrong when guising it. Lastly even the world building still not yet explore I think, Komari character development is my reason of keep me reading it because I was desperate of what's gonna happen to Komori next. <<less

I read the 1st Volume and it's not bad. It kinda follows the typical "I'm weak, I can't possibly continue pretending like this– to I'm overpowered to a certain degree– and wait, I'm still weak!!" From what I can see there's character development and I have yet to continue reading Volume 2. For now, it's still quite typical and basic to me. It's a good pastime read at least.

I loved the 2 novels that were translated. I'm still annoyed that the others have not been done, even it is an amusing series, a mix of some elements from others that works here in great fashion.

I gotta say, I didn't expect to like it very much because just from reading the description it seems to be the protagonist has low-self esteem; and I thought she was going to stay like that and ya know, I've read some stories like that when protagonist remains pitiful till the very end and shows no growth and probably turn worse. But this, it caught my interest. The protagonist slowly grows and her subordinates are really praising her a lot and I thought at first it was that same trope... more>> "genius (or something) in everyone else's eyes" kinda thing but it wasn't. I like how the author shows its readers the conflict and the reason behind it all.

It's pretty okay and I'm thankful to the translator (s) for this 💕 <<less
