It was my first novel that I mtl-ed. But the ending was a bit disappointing, to me. Maybe that's why I avoid using mtl, now (scared of not liking the outcome).

But it gives me the bittersweet feeling, in a good way. And I don't regret reading this novel. If I were to describe relationship between the MC's they were just not on the same page. And eventually that point leads the novel to the disappointing and rushed ending, I think. But it is Happy Ending, so don't worry. In the... more>> end, I might re-read this novel, someday. I don't know the reason, but something in this novel tickles my heart. And I think I am willing to suffer again (actually it is not that dramatic, but who cares I just feel that way). However, when exactly that day will come is a still question for me, though. <<less

It's a weird book to review. I will never condone dating anyone who is 14 years younger than you. Or someone that, in all technicalities, is your sister.

But.

There's something about the way this book framed it.

Spoiler

The romantic entanglement becomes an issue only in the last 10 chapters. The rest is more about the MC coming to age and really understanding herself. That part is brilliant. Then the kind-of-in*est stuff comes in- and honestly, simply because this is fictional, it works. In real life, it would be creepy af but here, it's almost like character growth.

[collapse]

It's a beautiful story about a young girl finally understanding society and everyone around her. There's a lot of male chauvinism that'll raise your feminist hackles but it's still a worthy read. I'm glad it ended where it did. <<less

Meant to give the story 2 stars. I've read this story on and off since it first started being translated and the more I read, the less I like. The 14 year age gap is less of an issue to me, since the ML seems more like a child than an actual mature adult. Still, it is grooming, and you should be aware of that as you read. I really wish that the ML was someone else, instead of the 'brother', because the pseudo-in*est really doesn't work in the book's... more>> favour. He middles the line between brother and love interest in a way that just comes off gross and creepy. The father, too, is of a similar character; there's a couple of inserts in the beginning where the father keeps calling MC 'obedient' and 'quiet' and how much she reminds him of her mother (his ex-lover). Really do wish MC ended up with Wei Qi rather than the actual ML.

I don't know if the author intended for the story to come off as a angsty, bittersweet tragedy of how circumstance shapes a woman's personality—and honestly, I don't think it was—but the story really honestly sucks. Wanted to quit at about chapter 35 but persisted because I'm a completionist. The only sort of redeeming quality is the maybe pseudo-philosophical insights into MC and this concept of being a dodder flower—generational grooming. Anyway, additional points for the translation—kudos to them for lasting the entire novel because if I had to translate and edit 'obedient' and 'quiet' that many times, I would've quit by now. The whole story reads like something on r/im14andthisisdeep and is pretty fluffy if you ignore the grooming, borderline pe*ophilia, pseudo-in*est, male chauvinism, sexism, and the MC's cripplingly low self-esteem. All in all, would not read again. <<less

Hmmm... I think it's written well, many of the characters are lovely. Their quirks will make you quickly adore them. On the downside.. many of the theme and idea.. is rather too chauvinistic for my taste. Personally, I will be less surprised if this novel is written as propaganda for anti feminist movement or if it's written by a traditionalist man.

I had to take a break from this novel multiple times after reading some of the things said by the characters.. such as what gender entails you to be etc,... more>> you could argue that perhaps the author is trying to emulate the character mindset based on his backstory. But I beg to differ as on multiple occasion the idea seems to be agreed on and reinforced by various other characters again and again. Even straightforwardly acknowledging and normalizing it.

There are many other flaws I would love to point out such as MC having self awareness yet constantly on denial or a very unnatural/forced characters growth.. some could be said less of a growth but more like a dip in IQ department.. but I felt how I would best describe this novel is just.. Read it after turning off your brain and don't take things to heart... and.. don't learn from it. <<less

I liked this story very much MC is cute and nice though she was arrogant, rude and proud in her past life, but she changed, like how any people change after getting betrayed from their closed one and having a second chance after they messed up everything.,

Spoiler

The sweetness of having a new family and four attractive older brothers, MC 's life became a bliss. She was treated like a princess and those cute moments with her brothers was really enjoyable.

but you see everything was ruined when ML confessed, ML is a perfect older brother there's no doubt but as a boyfriend he is possessive, yandaree also that age gap is really big. Well ML is more handsome & powerful than her ex boyfriend but still I cant accept this ship. She was better with her ex boyfriend.

This is the 3rd novel by the same author about Rebirth-Do Over, which has some similarities to each other.

The biggest similarity is that all FL's get a rebirth after dying due to their own s*upidity. So that once they are rebirthed, their mindset has changed to a different outlook on life even though they don't have super powers, fore knowledge, or any other inexplicable talents. The FL's are basically alive again to fulfill their regrets about their own s*upid actions.

In this story, in the former life, the FL is a... more>> mistresses daughter that gets taken in by her mother's lover after her mother's death. Feeling resentment about her mother's personality, her death, and her entitlement about being taken care of, the FL goes down the rebellious path. Constantly making bad choices and having her mother's lover's family clean up and protect her. Basically, the FL was a spoiled brat with a huge inferiority complex, and did s*upid things because to try to "not become her mother." As a result, it wasn't until her death that she truly regretted her greed and rebellious behavior. So once she was rebirthed, she swore to be obedient and change her outlook on life.

Overall, I really did enjoy the slow burn subtle romance. Like others, I didn't quite like the abrupt ending. It would have been nice if the the real romance had been drawn out more instead of in such few paragraphs that only detail phone dialogue and the ML's worrying inner dialogue.

Not as good as "After Rebirth, I was Entangled by a Second Generation Rich Guy Again, " but the FL's emotional turmoil is still written well. <<less

process of their relationship development, cao yang realization about his feeling didn't seem too abrupt or forced, and xia rou responsed in the most logical way. It's not like other stories where one of them realised their feeling, confessed, and become together, no, it took sometime for them to adjust their feeling, processing it, before accept and embraced it.

I just finished the story and gosh I am so mad right now. The author did a really good job at pissing me off. The story started out great her adolescent years deserved 5 stars. When she started growing into a beautiful lady, approaching adulthood, I can say the story deserved 4 stars.

When did things start to get so awry? It was exactly in chapter 73. How I wish that I just stopped at chapter 72. The events from ch 73 up to the ending chapter were so forced.... more>> The author did not find a good way to sum a great romance story. Instead what I felt was I was seeing a sociopath in action. 1 star for the last few chapters.

ML started becoming hateful when she slowly transformed into a sexy lady. She somehow fit into his fetishes (long hair, small waist, big bust) thus allowing him to develop feelings towards MC - which from what I read, just seemed to be lust. ML is a pe*vert: he peeks into MC's clothes and stares at her b**bs. This was when MC is a very innocent girl who just thinks she's getting along with her older brother. ML even blamed MC for sleeping in the library. Hence, the reason why she saw him having s*x with someone IN THE LIBRARY. Oh the last few chapters even has him forcing MC to kiss several times. I am so disappointed with how this story turned out because it started so excellently. <<less

I feel this story is developing is a quiet good.

I mean that I like the female lead-the main character, Xia Ruo, is very... very innocent and naive, sigh...

The truth is that every time I see Xia Ruo's personality, I just sigh and I just don't understand how she even survived her last life. But there good points in Xia Ruo like she has self-awareness about her past life.

I feel that Cao Yang also liked Xia Ruo in her past life as well, but didn't confess to her but in this... more>> life Cao Yang couldn't endure it anymore and both Xia Ruo and Cao Yang are closer in the current life than the past life.

I actually felt very sad for Xia Ruo, when she realized how Cao Yang felt for her.....

I have something to say to everyone about this book:

In her past life, what Xia Ruo hated the most was being looked down upon. She wanted to tell everyone that she was better than her mother, Cheng Wan but in the she died for her stubborn nature. She only wanted to prove that she was better but what could she do if fate makes fun of her. The only person in the whole world truly cared for her was Cao Yang though, his feeling for her was very strong but she didn't realize anything and he never did anything. It became a unrequited love...

In her next life, she only wanted to live a humble life with simple happiness. But what she didn't know was the temporary happiness she got from Cao Yang created the path of her all sadness, in both of her lives.

She always took him as her only family. He also took her as a his sister but as time passed by his fondness towards her turned into tender love.

Xia Ruo was always a dodder flower and she would continue to be....

What she needed was freedom but she didn't have it...

What she need was strength to fight against the world but she didn't had it....

But she had that innocent smile and those bright, youthful eyes and she tried her best not be a dodder flower...

But she was what a dodder flower would be called....

She was naive and innocent but he was strong and clever....

Their lives tangled in every life time...

At the end of the day, those painful days come to an end...

Both youth hand in hand enjoy rest of their lives in moments......

Ah, what a innocent dodder flower.........

Oh My God, I really want to cry from my heart. I feel very complex. My heart aches for Xia Ruo...I actually realize, I want to give Cao Yang some proper slaps on behalf of Xia Ruo.

What angers me the most is that Cao Yang interferes the pure and healthy relationship between Xia Ruo and Wei Qi, they were a well-match. Wei Qi was a good lad as well but Xia Ruo and Cao Yang already has happen... so it is a happy ending! <<less

This is not a fluffy shoujo story. This is not a story where the MC receives a rebirth and everything goes smoothly. This is more akin to a deep introspection into a young woman's life. She is damaged, she is traumatized, and she does not have a single outlet to acknowledge her mental state until the very end.

You have to realize that this story needs to be read from a psychological thriller viewpoint. Everything is beautiful on the surface, but the author leaves many clues as to the MC's mental... more>> state. I really appreciate how this is explored.

My complaint with this novel is the ending which was too rushed. It needs about 30 more chapters to be satisfactorily wrapped up. It felt like the author wrote themselves into a corner and could not resolve the issues they created.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the MC is not a strong woman. She died at the age of 25 after receiving a huge betrayal and battling feelings of inferiority and depression her whole adolescent life. All of her actions in her past life are understandable, so you din't hate her past life either. But she is a hardworker. She keeps moving forward, and she has a bottom line that she will stand up for. She is such a nuanced and flawed character, but you can't help but root for her. <<less

Well, two stars, I don't know how to fix the misclick.

I didn't know what to make of this novel.... originally I never liked a weak personality but I gave this a shot and forced myself to read through.

and their values made me extremely uncomfortable overall demeaning the worth of a woman, it isn't something I feel should be romanticized or even highlighted in this day and age.

If they were going along with such a path, I really had hoped for something more despairing to occur in the end, I really couldn't wrap my mind around them being together, the resolve over the issue was unsatisfying, and I really wish that in this life she had become more than a vase, even in her own messed up way.

That said, the writing and translation was okay. Flowed well. That's it. <<less

THERE ARE SPOILERS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

the reason why I read this story because of my compulsive OCD, preventing me from erasing the book from my reading list entirely. the reviews were damning, and I always hated novels whose romance consisted of red-flag abuse. and yet, this novel was relatively calm. the male lead, in the beginning, was a source of denial for me, where I'd bemoan and grumble about the fact that that guy was the ML, but deeper into the story, I kinda got over it ignored it completely.

in the reviews, there have been many, many people who wanted the SML to end up with the FL (Xia Rou). the SML shows up in like the last twenty chapters, short enough to tell you the ending. and to be entirely honest, I wasn't surprised when she ended up with the ML. other than the fact it was "written in the stars" SML and Xia Rou were in the blossoming stages of like, not love. if the ML hadn't made a move, she truly might've married the SML. and that's where I tell you how bad of an idea it would be.

first off, rebirth. no one would be in their right mind. you literally see Xia Rou cut herself with a fruit knife to make sure she's not dreaming. while reading, I felt that her mental health and images of people, especially with the Cao family, was entirely built on her previous memories. the moment something would change, she freak out a bit and space out from conversations, dinner, anything really. (note: the spacing out was frequently mentioned by the author, an up-and-coming sign of her delusion disorder. we'll get to that later.) Xia Rou steadily matures, placing the ML (and her "big brother") on a pedestal higher than Buddha himself. something mentioned is that Xia Rou is averse to human touch, a trauma from her childhood, but the ML and the Cao Fam are the only ones whose touch she does not reject (until SML). so, then she meets him. the man, that in her previous life, was the man that her big brother (read: ML) wanted her to get married to. so she decides her fate. marry SML.

she doesn't start dating him for love, and not really for the attraction (although there is some) but because her big brother, her mentor, her parent, said that he'd be a good marriage partner. the new Xia Rou of the Cao Family is obedient, she listens to what her big brother says. every. single. time. it's kinda terrifying how mindlessly Xia Rou follows his words, because of such a deep trust from her previous life. so when the ML reaches out screws that all over in just a moment, that trust, that image, that big brother, is gone. queue in delusion disorder. and I know what you're thinking, "no. there's a past life, she's not crazy they're the crazy ones..."

well, you're wrong. and also, right. I don't wanna get into the specifics, but if someone told you they'd died in a world just like this one, except the choices are different and so is everyone else, you'd get one h*ll of a headache trying to figure it all out. was it just a dream? is this world just a brief, seven-second dream before the final end? was Xia Rou's world just a dream, a dream so real she'd carry grudges into real life? what is true, is that humans are the crazy ones, trying to figure it all out. why should it matter? you have a life, a second one or the first, but live it. it may be a dream, but it'll be one h*ll of a dream to write about.

and so, here we are. Xia Rou ended up with the ML, a man who she knows a version of, and that stability she yearns for sits on his shoulders, just out of reach. while the SML is a bit of a variable. Xia Rou knew SML, but not all of him, not his whole personality, just pieces. Xia Rou's personality recovered too, after a bout of depression, insomnia, and delusion, a c*cktail mix like no other that I drink on Sundays.

so, my final verdict is: storyline as a whole, four stars. some plotholes had accumulated by the ending, so an epilogue to tie all that up would be great. the romance was progress, and the final chapters only really show the ML's perspective, a twist that I didn't really want. the personalities of the characters are... realistic to say the least, and self-aware. not something that readers adore, but I appreciate the... honesty. finally, the author is someone who wrote a message inside the book. what kind of message it is, figure it out yourself.

xoxo, MiRA

The story give me bitter after taste.

After I finished, a question pop up in my head. "How can it be like this!"

I think its better if the ML stays as big brother. Since what he have done is more like r*pe.

At first it was a good story. MC was calm, quite and obedient, trying not to repeat her mistakes. It was a sweet funny story and I like that very much. But after 45 chapters I became irritated of her. She is really block head and watching was really frustrating. So I dropped it. I didn't have any patience watching her anymore.

After reading the end of this novel I felt like I needed a palate cleanser to order my ideas about the novel end to better appreciate it before I make my review.

This novel deals with profond and some touchy subjects such as mental illness and self-esteem and it goes in depth into our main character psyche.

One of the thing I appreciated the most was that our main character really shows some growth through the novel and that we can see that all the characters are developed with their own flaws... more>> and set of views of the word even if we as modern people may not always accept them.

For me it wasn’t really a fluffy story even if there are a lot of touching moments and pampering and doting of certain characters toward each other but it is really refreshing to see how the family dynamics are described and how the social circles interact or interfere in personal relationships.

Even if the ending of the novel wasn’t what I really wanted to consider the end fulfilling for the relationship I saw grow and evolve it is a logical ending of the story and I feel like the author really put some research even if the ending itself isn’t developed in many chapters.

The translator also did a really great job and I would love to see the next project if the story is in my strike zone.

TLDR: Great translation and great psychology research on the characters but some touchy aspect that may leave you frustrated with either the characters or the ending I would still consider it worth reading especially since the novel is pretty short <<less

I love it in spite of some -ve remarks. The age gap is normal. The end was sweet. Writing is sometimes a bit stilted but engaging. Was also rooting for WQ but she couldn't have both WQ and CQ. FL realised her past mistakes but was making good adjustments the 2nd time around. Being nice and good doesn't mean she's a boring person; it's her charm.
