*The Four Great Female Constables – Book 1/4

Not all women in the world desire to fight for the position of the main wife.

Just like Bai Yuxiao who is very happy to be a concubine since she does not need to care about other things. Since she can sleep well, eat well, and live well, compared to the swords and shadows that lurk in Jianghu, the fight for power in the inner courtyards is like house wine.

When she is free and at leisure, she can also tease these women and she can also regulate herself mentally and physically ~ ~

However, this can only be used to pass the time. She still has to take care of her own important business. Although being a constable may seem dangerous, it could bring great wealth if exploited properly.

Who would have known that her husband, the Wangye who had not entered her bedchamber for two years, would suddenly look for her every day and cultivate on her every night!

The story was interesting but the last part felt rushed. There were not any fluffy or romantic moments between the ML and FL. They communicated in bed through s*x.
Spoiler

He found her, promoted her and her father, made her pregnant and then his wife. The end

[collapse]

amm I know that it's a historical romance and the ML is prince. So it's normal to have concubines but what I found disturbing was

Spoiler

That after spending 30 days with the FL, when he returned to his palace, he went to his concubines for several nights to relieve his s*xual needs. Ewwww. This really bothered me. : (

[collapse]

Another thing that annoyed me was the repeated fact that the ML likes her because apparently she is different from other women aka his concubines. The ML and FL both believed this and at one point FL was found telling herself that she needs to act differently from other women otherwise her husband would not like her. Ahhhhh

Since I really enjoy the story and was upset by the low writing I gave it 5 stars. So far I love the laid-back, strong, farsighted and yet devoted FL :=) She knows the ML very well, also his attitude to women which I find to be quite realistical. I do hope thr author will also portray a realistical reason for her love though!

This review will serve as a sole reminder to myself why this was an absolute waste of time so I don’t accidentally re-read it without realizing:

First off, girl... The male lead is a steaming pile of poo. Yes it’s set in ancient china where the wives are plentiful and the men are treated like gods, but dang the ML is garbage.

Remember that you couldn’t decide what was worse, that a seemingly “strong” FL unrealistically fell for straight up tr*sh or the waste of space tr*sh himself. No amount of doting... more>> “after love” can redeem the fact that the ML treated all THIRTEEN OF HIS WIVES including the FL like meat puppets.

And yet the FL, who is suppose to be a “smart”detective of sorts was only too eager to lick the ground the ML walked on.

Remember girl, you have standards and this? Ain’t it, so move along. You’re welcome. Don’t need your blood boiling twice. <<less

I think the pace of this story is really good. The ML doesn't fall in love right away but started to show interest little by little until he falls deep in love with the FL. Loved how the FL looks at her situation realistically. She's smart and solves her own problems without the ML's help. However, I wished they actually included something about her doing her constable job. There's a lot of novels with thousands of words about scheming; why can't we have thousands of words about solving cases instead!... more>> 😔 Anyway, to those browsing the comments about the smut - it's light. 😝 <<less

(More accurate rating would be a 4.5)
I honestly enjoyed this story much more than I expected. I absolutely love the FL and how she deals with the ML!

I didn’t give the story a 5/5 to be stricter as honestly it felt that the ML was more interested in the FL’s character and abilities rather than actually being in love with her. It was only until the last chapter of the story that I could see the ML was truly in love with her and not just what she had to offer

spoiler for the ending proceed with caution¡!

Spoiler

the last line of the novel where the ML said to himself that he has the patience to spend time with her till eternity AAH MY HEART that was the PERFECT ENDING if that’s not true love I don’t know what is T.T

[collapse]

but then again the novel is only 27 chapters. There’s only so much that you can write in detail for 27 chapters, so the lack of background information plus the development of the relationship can be overlooked. Overall an enjoyable and light read.

A short, but good read.

Things I liked:

  • Relationship between the MC and ML - MC is smart and knows when to act and how to act. They work as equals which is something I appreciated.
  • Strong MC - She takes advantage of the opportunities given to her, but knows her limits. She's very realistic about what she finds acceptable and will work hard towards her goal. She never uses any underhand schemes towards other characters.
  • ML is quite decent - apart from one thing that another review already mentioned
Things I didn't enjoy as... more>> much:

  • Ending felt slightly rushed? Not really sure.
    Spoiler

They pretended she was pregnant. A couple chapters later, she did become pregnant. Then she gave birth. Then she got promoted. The end.

    [collapse]
  • Background of the MC was also kind of confusing. We don't really learn much about her or her background with her friends.

It's too short for me! I like it! It's fluffy. ML is possessive and doting but he's also level headed. His possessiveness is not on a frightening scale or one that goes yandere.

I really really really like the FL. Smart. Independent. Although she's very much in love, she also knows her place and knows not to be greedy and too ambitious when it comes to him. She knows that the way to live a peaceful life is not to join the inner courtyard fight. I like that she's not desperate... more>> for him or in any household position, rather, she wished not to be promoted lol. I think it's also because of her secret work.

(little fact about their marriage ⬇️)

Spoiler

And the fact that she was the one who planned and schemed her own marriage. What a woman! HAHAHAA

[collapse]

There were parts where I think it could be stretched or add fillers to. Here:

Spoiler

1. When she was hiding from him. I find it funny and exciting that she's being suspected but he really can't find any evidence to point out that she's indeed Shui. It even took months of investigations and monitoring yet they still can't confirm. She's a great actress! I personally would like to read more of their cute schemes where Shui evades him and makes sure she's not find out and at the same time, ML trying to set traps to expose her.

2. I also wish there were more married life chapters. Fluff to be specific. I think there's a room for more fluffy married life chapters after she was exposed to be Shui. Other than f*cking (which is not even close to smut) each night, I would very much like to read more of their cute banters. I would also like their relationship to be challenged, not really the usual throne schemes but just other political stuff. She's also capable in martial arts so I was waiting for more action but it didn't really happen.

[collapse]

I honestly want to read more from them 😭 <<less

Although the description mentioned MC's job as a constable, in actual fact, the scene which MC did her job as a constable was almost non-existent. At most, it was only mentioned as passing. This story focused more on MC and ML's relationship.

MC was quite likeable. I really liked her easy-going personality. I couldn't say the same about ML though. He was a complete sc*m who often looked down on woman and only treated them as a tool to quench his desire. But his personality was indeed considered pretty normal in... more>> ancient time where man's position was above woman. I really couldn't believe that MC fell for that kind of unrealiable man and even still devoted to him after he left her in the cold for 2 years. <<less

I read all four of the novels in this series in one weekend and together they are very cute

The first three books and part of the 4th book are all about The Salt Case, so that can get monotonous because we know the outcome, but the romances keep it fresh

This is a good introduction to the world of the series, it introduces the case the sisters are working on and sets the tone of a society where independent women are valued

I like that the FL is content and happy before... more>> the ML fell in love with her, which is refreshing in a novel with a harem

The FL is my favorite in the series, she is a joy. The ML is my least favorite, he doesn’t have to work to earn the love of the FL and he seems complacent

Overall I enjoyed the novel and highly recommend it (and the entire series) <<less

I enjoyed this story, but out of the Four Great Female Constables series; this was my least favourite.

Compared to the other 2 MLs from the series, book 2 and 3, the 4th hasn't been translated yet, I don't like the ML as much. But, I have to cut the ML some slack as he is a Wangye and can't be held to the same degree as an assassin or a group chief. He has a whole inner courtyard filled with fragrant flowers that will serve him.

I took off a star... more>> as I really really did not like how the novel repeatedly wrote that the FL is diff from other women and that is the reason why the ML likes her. She herself chooses to respond/act differently to the ML's norm, which surprises him, makes him laugh and reminds him that this is why he loves and chose the FL as his woman.... <<less

Cute short story. MC and ML are both smart, cunning people who love to scheme against each other. He's an injured (and temporarily blind) prince on the run from assassins, and she's the girl who saves him. Except he has no idea that she's also his concubine and a secret Imperial Constable. The plot, pacing, scheming, characters and translation are all well done. This is the first in a quartet of short stories, one for each disciple sister/secret constable.

Simple but interesting!

Doesn’t have much plot besides the growth of the ML and MC’s relationship, but it’s a good quick read nonetheless.

MC is down to earth and has her own ambitions and ML is cold but a good lover.

I recommend it!

Such a fun and refreshing read! It's not overly heavy on the harem drama, partly due to the shorter length, but includes all the fun bits of FL enjoying the pampered life. Something I enjoyed was that despite being in love with ML and willing to work for their relationship and to help him succeed, the FL kept her head on straight and didn't compromise her own values and goals for his sake.

I read bits of the original text as well as the translation and would recommend sticking to the... more>> translation. In my opinion, the author's way of writing ancient dialogue leaned a bit too modern and ended up being distracting. It's much less obvious in the translation, which itself is top notch, sans some translation errors here and there. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel. It’s fairly short. I like short novels.

The ML is your usual ML (cold and obsessive dude) but I really like that the female lead is smart and has a secret job rather than being a flower. I especially looked forward to the steamy scenes sprinkled throughout the novel.

This is one of those guilty pleasure novels that unless you know what you are going into, you might not enjoy this and you might need to look for other titles to read.

Apparently, this book has a... more>> sequel which will be about the other female constable and I am looking forward to that as well. <<less

Reviewing the entire series:

This is a series of four short stories revolving around four sister disciples who are “secret constables” (similar to underground police detectives) with the main case being Jiangnan’s salt tax evasion, seen from each girl’s perspective, starting with the youngest and ending with the eldest.

I liked the second and fourth the most, and enjoyed them. The first and third were alright, the male leads weren’t to my taste.

The stories have a little background mystery but most of the writing involves the interactions between the couples and sisters.... more>> They are the:

1. “Salted fish” concubine x Arrogant prince who wants her to stop sneaking out on investigations

2. Charming and bold dancer x Blushing (only for her) assassin she likes to tease

3. Aggressive cold beauty x Fool for her crazy gang leader stalking her

4. Trickster merchant eldest sister x Upright official strategizing how to marry her

Pros:

- Most of the relationships are cute.

- The plot isn’t meticulous but still interesting enough.

- Bold and capable female leads.

- Distinct personalities and characterization.

- They’re all pretty comedic.

- Other than the first book’s male lead, none of them are royalty and some of them are even commoners. And none of them become emperor lmao. A breath of fresh air in Chinese historical romance fiction, lemme tell you.

Cons:

- Many things are not fleshed out. If you’re looking for intricate plot you’re not going to find it here.

- Though it’s “understood” that everything is consensual, the actual language and writing involves what I would consider dubious consent. I felt uncomfortable reading some parts.

- And the third book’s male lead pursues the female lead pretty insistently, making her uncomfortable. While she warms up to him, I didn’t really.

- The male leads are always written to be more capable than the female leads. At least in the second and fourth stories the female leads are better at some things (second with wit and fourth with money) but tbh for a series revolving around four female detectives the author praises them but there’s a lack of actual girl power.

- Most of the male leads have a kind of “wife must defer to the husband” mindset. This is true to the time period but not exactly what I look for in a male lead.

Especially because part of what they liked about their wives was their independence and capabilities? So you want her to be capable so she can just sit and wait for you at home?

This is also why the second book is my favorite, inching out the fourth. Even after they get married he follows the female lead’s wishes and defers to her. Even though he has the best martial arts of any of the characters he has the most equal relationship with his wife, imo.

Fourth book’s male lead is pretty respectful, I liked him, but he kind of schemes to keep her busy so she’s not interested in going outside to investigate. Not the worst behavior but it kind of irks me.

Anyways, if you like this type of story give this series a try! They’re all pretty standalone so you can read the one you’re interested in first without being too confused. I wrote a lot but I did enjoy them! <<less

It effin caught me off guard. This is the shortest cn novel I've read, historical cn novel to be exact because One Lifetime is the shortest rather. Anyway, I don't know what to say because before this, I've read The Beloved Imperial Consort which really confused me. No matter how that novel's ML loves his Cefei, she can't be his Wangfei then this novel came where a Liangdi rise up to a wangfei, so what's really the rules?

Anyway, I can't say much because it's very short and their relationship is... more>> mostly made up of s*xual interc**rse but I like the fl's pov in life and love, it's unique in an ancient setting. I can't come up what to say anymore. If you want a fast read, then maybe this one if for you, there's not much of angst in it though. <<less
