*The Four Great Female Constables – Book 4/4

To work as a constable, it was inevitable for enemies to take revenge, so Shangguan Yan never gave others the opportunity to seek revenge.

“Miss looks a bit familiar.” The cold and handsome Gongzi stared at her.

“I never venture out the main door nor cross over the threshold of the side door. Gongzi must be mistaken.” She replied shyly.

When both of them met again the second time, the cold and handsome Gongzi stared at her.

“For someone who doesn’t venture out of the main door nor cross over the threshold of the side door, how come you have started to do business?”

“My family is in difficulties and there are elders and young in the family. It’s beyond my control.”

The third time they met, the cold and handsome Gongzi stared at her.

“Miss is decked in expensive finery from head to toe. Your family doesn’t seem to be in difficulties.”

“Don’t just look at my glamorous appearance, in fact, I am not favored in my family.” She said tearfully with grievance.

When the criminal case was brought to court, it was only then she saw the Lord Imperial Commissioner sitting on his high seat and she finally understood what it meant by ‘being crushed to death by government officials’.

“Constable Shangguan, what else do you have to say?” The cold and handsome Gongzi stared at her.

She was dumbfounded and screamed in her heart.

This fellow is indeed here to seek revenge!

Enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second half (first half was funnier and I found the ML's inner turmoil amusing and quite realistic - guys worry about getting rejected also).

This four-part series (tetralogy? Quadrilogy?) was lighthearted and funny overall. I liked the sisterhood between the four FL's, but would have enjoyed seeing them be more badass (which is probably why I like the latter two FL's more). It's not a series that pulls at my heartstrings or elicits much thoughts aside from lols at some of the... more>> interactions. I'm OK with this because the overall feel since the beginning was not too serious, so I didn't have high expectations of looking for anything deep. It's an OK, short, romance collection. <<less

This is the best of the 4 books in the series, in my opinion. The MLs in the first and third book trended toward unlikable, and the second was good but just not quite as excellent as this one. It's a joy to watch two incredibly clever leads dancing around each other, one-upping each other, and finally working together.

It isn't as good after the two are married, as the best bits are when the two are more or less equal in freedom, and this author definitely tends to have a... more>> leaning toward the "married women are subordinate" view. Fortunately they get married pretty late into the story. <<less

The final and also the best book in the constable series. FL is a strong and independent woman with that perfect balance of manly capabilities and female charm. Her relationship with ML is pure cuteness filled with both respect and a tad bid of playfulness as ML tries to chase her with logic and reasoning as well as thoughtfulness. They're both smart in their own rights and able to solve both external problems as well as their own relationship problems. FL disguise as a man got seen through by ML... more>> who was duped by her in the past. She thought he held a grudge, and while he indeed does, he was actually partly looking for her due to his interest in her intelligence as well, which was kinda cute. At the end, we also got to see the previous sister constables return briefly! <<less

Not as good as the first book, but I gave it 5 stars because all the characters from book 1 to 4 are all present here. It could have been longer. I think the novel is too short so the ending seems rushed. But I did enjoy the book, especially if you read all the previous ones. Thanks to catmeme for translating all the parts of the series.

what an amazing series. Little to no drama. light. with smart and powerful Female leads. Reasonable actions of both couple.

Each of the characters, FL and MLs are endearing and have their own merits. it's been a while since I've read the others but this ML is probably my favorite

He considers how the other person feels before confessing.

Spoiler

Not only is it his character one that never fights a war when victory is uncertain but because he also knew that if he asked too early, it might scare her away.

"He could see that her heart was not with him yet. When she looked at him, her eyes did not show much emotion and before there is a certainty, he would never reveal his feelings."

He never revealed it until the right time came but he did show it through actions.

I absolutely love how this ML knew that there are obstacles in obtaining the female lead's heart yet he did not make unfair moves to his rivals but he did what should honestly be done in any love stories, make himself appealing to her.

He honored her choices and that proposal of his was the best for me

He trusts her

where he saw the FL talking with her former fiance.

Di Jing shook his head. "It's alright. It's also good to let them have a chat." After that, he turned and left.

TRUST guys, this is trust right here. He knew the other guy needed closure. And well, it didn't hurt that he also knew that FLs heart wasn't also with her former fiance.

And respects her.

Spoiler

They were already promised at this point and yet...

He clenched his hands into fists behind his back and forced down the urge. It is not the right time yet, for she is still not his. He must not act like a young boy and behave rudely towards the beauty at this critical moment.

Read it guys. It's great.

I don't get the other reviews about how the 1st or 2nd part was better than the others. For me the flow was great. The appearance of the other leads in the other books was natural and my heart felt warm as I read how the FLs and MLs interacted with each other.

Highly rec! <<less

Reviewing the entire series:

This is a series of four short stories revolving around four sister disciples who are “secret constables” (similar to underground police detectives) with the main case being Jiangnan’s salt tax evasion, seen from each girl’s perspective, starting with the youngest and ending with the eldest.

I liked the second and fourth the most, and enjoyed them. The first and third were alright, the male leads weren’t to my taste.

The stories have a little background mystery but most of the writing involves the interactions between the couples and sisters.... more>> They are the:

1. “Salted fish” concubine x Arrogant prince who wants her to stop sneaking out on investigations

2. Charming and bold dancer x Blushing (only for her) assassin she likes to tease

3. Aggressive cold beauty x Fool for her crazy gang leader stalking her

4. Trickster merchant eldest sister x Upright official strategizing how to marry her

Pros:

- Most of the relationships are cute.

- The plot isn’t meticulous but still interesting enough.

- Bold and capable female leads.

- Distinct personalities and characterization.

- They’re all pretty comedic.

- Other than the first book’s male lead, none of them are royalty and some of them are even commoners. And none of them become emperor lmao. A breath of fresh air in Chinese historical romance fiction, lemme tell you.

Cons:

- Many things are not fleshed out. If you’re looking for intricate plot you’re not going to find it here.

- Though it’s “understood” that everything is consensual, the actual language and writing involves what I would consider dubious consent. I felt uncomfortable reading some parts.

- And the third book’s male lead pursues the female lead pretty insistently, making her uncomfortable. While she warms up to him, I didn’t really.

- The male leads are always written to be more capable than the female leads. At least in the second and fourth stories the female leads are better at some things (second with wit and fourth with money) but tbh for a series revolving around four female detectives the author praises them but there’s a lack of actual girl power.

- Most of the male leads have a kind of “wife must defer to the husband” mindset. This is true to the time period but not exactly what I look for in a male lead.

Especially because part of what they liked about their wives was their independence and capabilities? So you want her to be capable so she can just sit and wait for you at home?

This is also why the second book is my favorite, inching out the fourth. Even after they get married he follows the female lead’s wishes and defers to her. Even though he has the best martial arts of any of the characters he has the most equal relationship with his wife, imo.

Fourth book’s male lead is pretty respectful, I liked him, but he kind of schemes to keep her busy so she’s not interested in going outside to investigate. Not the worst behavior but it kind of irks me.

Anyways, if you like this type of story give this series a try! They’re all pretty standalone so you can read the one you’re interested in first without being too confused. I wrote a lot but I did enjoy them! <<less

This story marked the end of the 4 female constable series. Like the previous books, I also enjoy this story very much. Out of so many characters, I love ML the most. He's surely one of my favorite ML all times.

Spoiler

ML was actually a cold and indifferent guy like most of ML from another ancient time novel but the reason why I love him so much was because the way he treated MC.

He treated MC like equal. Even though he worried about her and didn't want her to get hurt, he still let her do what she wanted. He also respected her opinions and didn't look down on her although she was a woman.

When he secretly chased her, he didn't directly snatched her from her fiance even though he could do it with his status. Instead, he took his time to make MC aware of him by letting her work at his side. He waited until MC had a high favorability towards him to make a move. The blunder of MC's fiance also helped him winning MC's heart (oh, poor the ex fiance).

[collapse]

Meanwhile, the plot actually took place after the salt taxes case resolve. It's different from the previous 3 books where the story revolved around the salt taxes case. MC was also faced with the new case but unfortunately, the case was resolved without any detail by ML. Well, it's understandable since this book focused more on ML and MC's relationship.

As for the ending, I think it's a bit rushed and there were several things left unexplained. If the author wanted to make the story more compact, he/she should ended it after MC's wedding and maybe added a few extras without dragging it for 10++ chapters more. <<less
