Transfer student, a head honcho in his previous school • Damn badass cool guy, Shou (Zhai Yao)

Top-notch big shot in his curent school • Reserved, cunning, and upfront, Gong (Shen Heng)

#This is a story of when one school boss meets another school boss…

Zhai Yao transferred from one rubbish school to another rubbish school, and on the very first day, he sent shockwaves through his new class, leaving his classmates utterly bewildered.

With a pale and delicate countenance and a slender figure, Zhai Yao appeared anything but the rumoured fighter who could take on ten opponents at once. Yet, the very next moment after entering the classroom, he confidently strolled to the back row, kicked a desk in the corner, and dropped his backpack on it.

The male student, who had been reading with lowered eyes, lifted his head and looked up with an indifferent expression. “Need something?” Zhai Yao glanced at the name on his book, knocked on his desk twice, and said, “Shen Xing (沈行), right? …Move aside.”

He remained utterly oblivious to the ominous hush around him—

Very well, the new student had just arrived, and on his very first day, he had already clashed with the school’s big shot.

The big shot sneered, rising to his feet. With a casual flick of his hand, he sent Zhai Yao’s backpack sailing into the rubbish bin. He corrected him, “‘Heng (珩)’.”

Zhai Yao and Shen Heng became desk mates.

Zhai Yao felt that his new desk mate was both devious and pretentious. Not only was he ruthless in fights, but he also always carried a book in his hands. As fate would have it, their academic standings left them ranked side by side at the bottom-most. To put it bluntly, he was nothing more than an overbearing king of pretence.

It wasn’t until one day, by a twist of fate, Zhai Yao ended up visiting Shen Heng’s home and discovered a wall decorated with certificates and awards.

Shen Heng accompanied his senile elderly grandpa. He patiently and tirelessly answered the old man’s repetitive questions while revealing his strong yet slender arms, preparing a meal consisting of three dishes and a soup.

He cast a cold glance at Zhai Yao. “Come and have dinner.”

Zhai Yao chuckled and approached, narrowing his eyes. “Tsk, you’re quite a homemaker, huh.”

Shen Heng gazed at Zhai Yao’s exposed fair neck, his eyes lingering for a moment before he averted his gaze. His earlobes betrayed a subtle blush.

Zhai Yao once thought that Shen Heng was a bit of a pitiful soul, implicated by the hardships of life, from being an all-around academic genius to falling into a delinquent.

To the extent that, when Shen Heng pinned him against the wall in the stairwell and even locked the door behind them, Zhai Yao still maintained a light-hearted demeanour, joking with a mindset of rescuing a wayward youth, “Want to kiss me? Wait until you break into the top 100.”

Shen Heng’s breath hitched ever so slightly, his gaze deepening with a mysterious intensity. “I’ll just get the top rank instead. Would that be enough to bed you?”

I started crying when Zhai Bing got diagnosed with Lymphoma. Not only was ut just sad in its own but I was told my grandfather had no further available treatment options for his cancer that day.

I feel really sad for Zhai Bing. She wasn't a perfect mother but she did love her child, and her life was finally looking up.

And the MC was devasted : (

This novel is a fantastic read. From the synopsis, it seems like your usual high school gangster #1 meeting gangster #2, who secretly is a genius. But don't be fooled by it because this novel offers more than just that.

---

The story begins with Zhai Yao (MC) transferring to another mediocre school and getting into a clash with Shen Heng (ML), who's the big shot of his new school. Their first encounter sets off on the wrong foot, but gradually, they develop an understanding of each other's lives and the heavy... more>> weight they each bear through their subsequent interactions.

The novel delves deeply into themes of family and life, exploring the unconditional warmth and love families offer, alongside the burdens they entail. It also portrays how life is multi-faceted, showcasing both its gentle aspects and the hardships it brings. Amidst the challenges in life, there are also moments of beauty.

---

MC & ML's characterization and relationship

Both of them are like stars stuck in the mud, bound by familial responsibilities. But fortunately, they found each other and sparked a mutual desire to continue and walk forward in life, giving them both a reason to better not only themselves but also the opposite party. Through this journey, they radiate light upon each other, becoming each other's reliance.

In the beginning, there are doubts and fears.

Spoiler

The MC is hesitant, fearing he might hold the ML back due to his own family circumstances or perceived self-inadequacy. However, with constant reassurance from the ML, they eventually talk it out, leading to a pivotal moment where the MC ultimately accepts the ML (ONE OF MY FAVOURITE SCENES).

In the latter half of the novel,

Spoiler

after they've got together, things are going smoothly until MC's family faces a crisis. This event utterly crushes the MC, and he's pushed to the verge of giving up. Despite the constant pushing away, the ML stands unwaveringly by the MC's side, providing quiet support and confronting obstacles together with resilience.

Spoiler

The ML himself also grapples with personal struggles. After his mother's ordeal during childhood, he bears the weight of guilt and helplessness, choosing to keep himself closed off. He's the type to keep his emotions hidden and tends to bottle up whatever grievances he has when it comes to the familial aspect. Naturally, there's a limit to how much one can bear... That one scene where the ML shreds tears when they... *bite my fist*

---

To conclude, this book really struck a chord with me, capturing a realism that hits close to home. It felt like I was right there growing up with the characters, which made their journey even more meaningful. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a high school romance that dives into family drama and personal struggles. <<less

I really loved reading this story. It contains a lot of the themes and settings I love in novels; both protagonists having to deal with difficult family situations, poverty, illness/disability of loved ones... all while attending school, being teenagers and falling in love. Even with these heavy themes the story is not overly dramatic and focuses on both protagonists being a positive ally in each others' lives.

I did, however, feel incredibly sad during the chapters where MC makes a cake for ML's birthday. My little heart shattered.

[collapse]

Side characters are also 3 dimensional and progress along with the story. They are entertaining and feel very much "alive".

Spoiler

I especially liked the character of the sister. She gave birth to a child but still acts like an irresponsible teenager. She is stuck in a domestic violence situation, and her inability to "grow up" has dramatic effects on her daughter and MC. There are as many moments where you will hate her as there are moments where you will love her (how she shows up to her brother's competitions as his no. 1 fan, for example).

[collapse]

MTL is about 80% readable... There is a whole lot of their romance and banter that is lost in machine translation, so I am excited to re-read this story with proper editing and translation ♡ <<less
