T*ash of the Count’s Family

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a novel.

[The Birth of a Hero].

[The Birth of a Hero] was a novel focused on the adventures of the main character, Choi Han, a high school boy who was transported to a different dimension from Earth, along with the birth of the numerous heroes of the continent.

I became a part of that novel as the tr*sh of the Count’s family, the family that oversaw the territory where the first village that Choi Han visits is located.

The problem is that Choi Han becomes twisted after that village, and everyone in it, is destroyed by assassins.

The bigger problem is the fact that this s*upid tr*sh who I’ve become doesn’t know about what happened in the village and messes with Choi Han, only to get beaten to a pulp.

“…This is going to be a headache.”

I feel like something serious has happened to me.

But it was worth trying to make this my new life.

Okay, so I've read this series twice now (1-300ish a year ago and then came back recently and reread 1-454) so I have a lot of opinions about it that I want to express. First of all, the first ~300 chapters or so is absolutely amazing. The author does a great job writing and foreshadowing everything to come, bringing literally everything together for amazing events. I honestly cannot recommend it enough. However, at around the ~300-400ish chapter point, the writing starts to get lost and convoluted. Basically, while the author... more>> originally set up important elements of the plot earlier, it seems that after a certain point he just gave up and starting pulling important plot points out of nowhere. Spoilers below for more details.

Spoiler

Here's an example of the author's great writing at the beginning: he foreshadows Cale's meet with the whales by having Cale think/talk about them and how he doesn't want to meet them. Then, when we see Cale meet the whale tribe, it's no longer a surprise and it feels like a natural progression of the story. This is an example of good writing: set-up, reminder, and payoff.

However, it seems the author forgets to do that after a couple hundred chapters because he literally pulls plot points out of his ass that were never established earlier. For example, I assumed (and likely every reader assumed) that Cale came from a normal Earth, but more than a HUNDRED chapters in, the author drops the bombshell that Cale actually came from a game Earth where monsters appeared and people have special abilities. Like WTF? It was literally so out of nowhere I was shocked...I have reread this and NOWHERE in the first hundred or so chapters is this foreshadowed or even hinted at, until we're over a hundred chapters well into the book.

Although it was weird, it isn't really enough to knock off a star. However, the author goes on with his ass-pulling by saying that Cale actually KEPT his powers from his former life on monster Earth where he has SUPER MEMORY! Like WTF! This felt absolutely out of nowhere especially almost 400 chapters in when Cale gets a random power he didn't already know about for some reason. WHY!? Cale also literally uses this power once, so it was so unnecessary and dumb.

Choosing to make the Earth Cale comes from a monster apocalyptic Earth is also incredibly confusing because it turns out Choi Han also comes from the same Earth despite being a character in a novel from that same Earth?? Apparently Choi Han is an uncle of Cale's friend, which is really weird when Choi Han is the protagonist of a novel on Earth. Was he simultaneously a real person and also the subject of a popular fantasy novel? This never gets answered and it's honestly really dumb, so I hope this gets answered later because otherwise it would be a really useless plot point.

[collapse]

Beyond the author's declining failure at naturally establishing plot points, he also introduces such a wide cast of characters that it feels like some important characters haven't appeared in a long time. I was literally reading at around chapter 400 and I thought to myself, "What ever happened to Toonka? He hasn't shown up in a long time" and I then realized it's been 100 chapters since he last appeared with virtually no closure on how he is doing or why Cale has ignored him for so long. It's just so weird because the first ~200ish chapters is dedicated to Cale gathering allies, and he doesn't use them consistently in his fights against Arm/White Star. It always feels like he's choosing some of his allies to fight while ignoring others, when he could literally be using all of them to pound his enemies to the ground. Like for f*cks sake he has
Spoiler

THREE DRAGONS

[collapse]
on his side, just f*cking destroy his enemies already please. Even if we account for the fact that White Star is a capable enemy to stand up to that, why doesn't Cale utterly smash the White Star's subordinates with the POWER OF DRAGONS!?!? It feels like they stand at the sidelines instead of taking the frontline role they should be doing at this point, which is really weird.

Anyway, I just wanted to write my thoughts and this review is honestly a bit more critical than I really feel. It's still an amazing series and the rapid updating is honestly astonishing. Beyond those few nitpicks, it really is one of the best series I've read, so please don't let this review turn you away. Really, what this criticism boils down to is "the writing starts to get a bit lazy 300 chapters in, " which is not enough by itself to make this novel not worth reading. Compared to other power fantasy reincarnation isekai novels of the genre, this one is a gem. <<less

This is a wish fulfillment story with an MC who has one simple wish and that is to be able to enjoy an early retirement and do nothing. Unfortunately for him the world the MC has transmigrated to is in turmoil and in order for his wish to become reality he has to fix the world's big problems, reluctantly. As is normal with these kinds of stories there are a lot of plotholes and illogical situations that don't make sense given the background of the MC. For instance why do... more>> all his plans work out as expected and why are there barely any obstacles in accomplishing his plans? Given the story you would expect a bit more problems but not even Raon is needed to come to the rescue because the MC never gets in a situation where his plans don't work out as he expected. Or why can the MC act like a noble so easily without remembering the previous inhabitant of his body and any training that person might have had? It's not like the MC was an actor or something similar in his previous life but he does not have any problems with his acting. Why is he still 'scared' of the people who work for him and adore him even after 2 years living in that world? I know it's used for comedic effect but most of these jokes are not that funny because it is difficult to imagine the MC having those thoughts in that situation.

And it's not that I can't think of explanations for some of those questions it is that the writer leaves these questions open that makes it annoying. Not annoying enough to stop reading because these kinds of annoyances are about small details and not about the main storyline. The story itself is pretty entertaining and as long as you keep in mind that this is a wish fulfillment story that is written almost in a 'slice of life' genre kind of way and takes place in an chaotic world than it a pretty entertaining story. <<less

I love it so much! Whenever Cale is brewing another plan, my heart palpitates and I can feel the adrenaline kicks in. I especially love how his character and the people around him change; especially with all the misunderstandings.

It was nice at the beginning but super close male relationships are a bit confusing...

I'm afraid that at some point of time Cale will marry prince...

Also novel already lost some darkish vibe and char development it had at the beginning. Side chars look more like tools which are used sometimes. And it feels like author is trying to add more 'elements' to just prolong story.

Anyway, story is still nice, it's still have some pace and logic. So you will not regret reading it

I won't repeat what all the other reviews have said so far, but I'll just agree that this is a pretty good novel with a couple draw backs.

The first one is that the premise of him being in a novel he's read before and knowing what's going to happen and secrets of characters from the novel seems to completely disappear, as he catches up to what he's read at around chapter 130ish. I don't know if he somehow gets more information later on, but it completely leaps out of the... more>> novel transmigration genre into a regular fantasy novel.

The second drawback, and the reason for it getting 4 stars instead of 5 so far, is that what other reviewers are saying about the lack of character descriptions and stories are true. After a character is introduced more or less, nothing else really happens concerning them. It's as if they're either always just standing next to the MC waiting to be used, or not brought along at all. Besides the black dragon who's always around the MC, the others are still pretty much blank slates. The two kitten beast children for example never really DO anything unless he needs their unique skills. You never get to see into their thought process, or even up to this point learn more about their story. He just adds members to his party left and right almost always instantly after meeting and somehow becoming their savior. It's not really interesting though, as most of them don't really have a personality or a strong back story.

Besides that, though, so far I like the novel. It does remind me a lot of the Novel's Extra, as it's about an MC who doesn't really want to be kind, doesn't really want to be in the spot light, but ends up saving everyone over and over again. The kind of MC that doesn't LIKE being told he's a good person, yet everyone says it all the same. <<less

This novel got my attention by it's interesting teaser. On the first few chapters it got me hooked with its unique characters and storyline. I became it's fan when it made me cry buckets and made me laugh with it's characters. This is one of those novels you can re-read again and will still get you :)

For me it has a wonderful balance of slice of life, comedy and drama. It has it's slow moments but later on you will realize it's all there for a reason and that... more>> is by creating a strong foundation for the story plot.

This is one of those novel's that has given me a new favorite MC and side characters that have their own beauty. Despite the number of characters I don't have a hard time remembering them due to how the author splendidly created them. <<less

One of the the best novels I've ever read. And the reason it deserves 5 stars to me is the fact that MC wants a slacker life more than anything and to be able to do that he has to solve a lot of things, the problem is that for every problem that he solves another 5 pop out of nowhere, his dream slacker life seems as far away as mine.

Now, this novel is the one that has put a smile on my face the most other than A Will... more>> Eternal, though the feeling is different as one made me laugh uncontrollably and the other one gives me a warm feeling inside. The writing is intermediary at best and though it seems boring sometimes, the way you get attached to the characters and can see their care for the MC is simply wholesome.

After reading a whole lot of junk food novels is nice to have another novel that can make me feel something like Er Gen's Renegade Immortal, A Will Eternal and I Shall Seal The Heavens did. <<less

Transmigrator in a fantasy story works extremely hard so he able to slack off.

Spoiler

Casually picking up a motley crew consisting of the original MC of the novel, a dragon/puppey, a priestess of the dead, his butler/assassin, and other heroes with his easily misunderstood *It looks like I am doing good deeds but I just can't be bothered and want to roll around in bed all day charisma*. This is a fantasy story depicting a good MC striving for peace so he slack off and waste his days away doing nothing. MC does not train/cultivate and do some light scheming instead. It is a very cute story

Idk bruh.

I thought this story was gonna be fun with lots of fantasy and action but I was wrong. Second Life Ranker was dropped due to copyright reasons and I'm trying to find a novel with the same charm as the book. I thought this was going to be it but I was wrong. The action in it sucks and the overall story is quite boring. The only thing I liked about the novel was the black dragon due to its cuteness, and one of the side characters being gay.... more>> I don't particularly dislike the MC. I thoroughly enjoy this novel and I haven't regretted picking it up. I've been constantly reading transmigration novels where the MC is OP right off the bat or everyone likes MC immediately.

TCF is a nice change of pace where the side characters are relevant to the story and actually contribute to supporting the MC. Small details that the reader overlooks earlier on are suddenly weaved into the story seamlessly with a good reason.

The main thing I love about TCF is that its world-building while also telling a story. Strategy and... more>> likeable characters aside, I can always envision the scene it sets up, whether it's for action or just drama.

If I had one bad thing to say about TCF, it would be the constant repetitive (to me at least) filler words that are really unnecessary in describing the scene.

Spoiler

Like when it mentions the kids averaging 10 years old... we get it already, they are young. You dont need to keep constantly reminding us about their average age every chapter.

In terms of the English translations of TCF I am on chapter 310 (up to date as of the current date) ; however, since I also read ahead through the raws, I guess it'd be more accurate to say that I'm on chapter 393 (up to date as of the current date).

Overall, to me, this is a 10/10 would highly recommend KR web novel.

Of course, not everyone has the same taste in what they like in their story, so the reason why I like may be a reason someone else... more>> doesn't like it. However, I would still encourage anyone to give it a read.

First off, if you're someone who must absolutely have a harem or some type of romance element in their story then this isn't the web novel for you. This is actually one of the reasons I like TCF so much. And no, he isn't the dense/clueless type of character who can't take a hint. It's just that this story literally has no harem/romance element to it, yet it builds up character relationships so well. I really like how relationships and connections don't have to equal to harem/romance/infatuation. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind harem/romance in my novels, but I just don't like when that overshadows what should be the actual plot of the story.

Anyways, here's a breakdown of what I think are the pros and cons:

Pros

  • Great story line and pacing; takes a common transmigration concept and uses it well so that it feels fresh and interesting
  • Interesting and intellectual MC that is mature and entertaining. He has a goal to live the slacker life, but ends up working the hardest to "achieve his goal".
  • Uses the "misunderstanding" trope well. It isn't too overused or used in a way that makes it too unrealistic or annoying. Later on, it transforms from "misunderstanding" from others to more like the MC can't be fully truthful to himself. It's done in a very skillful way, so it works with the MC and the characters around him well.
  • TCF builds its MC and some of its more immediate side characters very well. It even got me to like a character that I had no interest in/borderline disliked.
  • Our MC is weak yet powerful character. In the earlier chapters, the MC is definitely a weakling, but he knows how to use and work with people properly and doesn't go yolo solo. He does get way more powerful, but still can't be the most powerful in a way... at the same time the way he utilizes his resources makes him seem so powerful. An interesting conflict/balance that makes him such a well-written MC.
  • TCF uses the mystery box concept very well where it gives info but witholds enough to make the audience want to learn more.
Cons

  • Some of the side characters aren't given as much screentime (?) as others. However, the way it's written doesn't make me mad. The author doesn't neglect the side characters and seems to have a plan for them (though the length of their appearance and relevance differ). It would be nice to see more of some of the other side characters, but it's not too bad.
  • "Slow" in some parts (?). Personally, I don't agree with this, but since I noticed some people in the comments mentioning this, I decided to try seeing it from their perspective. I guess if you like your plot lines to be instantly gratifying this can be understandable, but I think the overall story pacing is well done. Certainly, there are some parts of an arc/area of the world that I'm not as emotionally invested in so it may feel "slow" at times, but I found out as I read more and more that all these pieces tie together really well in the end. Yes, it takes some patience, but the author definitely has all these plot points made to tie into each other in the end.

Disclaimer: this is all my own personal opinion and may differ from your own.

TCF isn't the most original story, or the deepest, but heck if it isn't enjoyable. From the start we're set up with little expectations, but as the story progresses with new twists and turns coming to light those tiny expectations get blown out of the water again and again. It's fairly predictable in most ways and completely wild in others, and I don't think I've had so much fun reading a series in a very long time.

If... more>> you're looking for a power-hungry harem beat-down grim-dark hell training fantasy? This is not the story for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for a funny, simple, surprisingly action-packed, warm-hearted, accidentally cool kind of fantasy? This is it my guys. There's no romance, there's no backstabbing party members, there's only good-natured fun. Even in the sad parts or incredible fight scenes later in the novel, everything reads with a certain undercurrent of satisfaction in good entertainment. The action makes me edge-of-my-seat excited, the care the characters show for each other brings me warmth, the comedy is pretty genuinely hilarious, and the plot just keeps escalating. There are definitely flaws, it's no literary masterpiece, but for me TCF is a five-star joyride and I love it.

Cale is the kind of main character I'd die for IRL. He schemes and plots and gains power solely for his goal of becoming a slacker and not having to work for the rest of his life, and as you can expect, it goes horribly wrong. Unfortunately, he's a good person - and the people around him recognise that and cherish him for it. His backstory is dripped into the novel in bits and pieces and let me tell you, the more you know the more you want to shake the author and demand answers, because, what?! He's weak and flawed and interesting and in denial about where his life is headed and I adore him.

It's not just Cale either, the supporting characters are loveable and plenty fleshed-out for where we are in the story, and though the cast keeps growing larger, the author doesn't just discard old characters and instead involves them more and more in both the plot and Cale's personal life (much to his dismay). The kids are the cutest thing I've read in Ever and at the same time incredibly overpowered. Also, the author writes women in a way that delights me - every single one of them has agency and power, they have personality, they're not 1-note b*tches or evil. They're their own people and they're treated like it. Crushes and love interests? Not even brought up. It's beautiful [wipes a tear].

I could go on, but safe to say I'd absolutely recommend TCF to anyone, though I'd give it about 60 chapters to see if it's really your cup of tea, and the plot picks up a lot more around chapter 150.

Pros: good translation, fun, loveable characters, enjoyable plot, no romance, lots of humour, leaves you excited, daily updates.

Cons: The writing is repetitive, probably to up the word count; darker skinned characters aren't treated badly but there are definitely problematic elements; sometimes the phrasing is awkward; reading it one chapter at a time makes it lose a lot of the charm, better to read a bunch in one go. <<less

So far so good. I enjoyed reading it. It's not the best novel I've read so far, yes, but it's one of the novel I'd like to read again and again. Although there's a lot of sentences that being repeated many times, and it's kinda annoying to be honest. I don't know if the author did it just so that the chapter will be long, or it's just one of his/her habit, I don't know. Repetition is ok but it should not be too excessive. And if possible, Author-sama (i... more>> doubt he/she will read this XD), can you show some character development?

Anyhow, I really like the story. So yeah. <<less

I've kept up with tr*sh since pretty much the beginning, it's enjoyable and has its up and downs. It's your 'Isekai' with the MC (Cale) being transported inside a book he read, but he didn't finish the book and only has knowledge to a certain point. He's a weakling in the story, and uses his knowledge that he read up to in the book to obtain strengths so that he can become a slacker in the future. He's overly misunderstood though, hailed as a hero by most... even his companions.... more>> Some of the main supporting cast is one dimensional, but the Author really tried to set-up a big cast and it made it hard to flesh out all the supporting characters. It's still a great read, and one of the few I keep up with daily along the TNE, Overgeared, and Yuusha.

I'd say my biggest complaints about the story are the fact there's a ton of deus ex machinas in it, even after the point in the book he read. And secondly, the fact the Author really avoids killing named villians in the novel but turns them all into prisoners to be used and added to the already tremendous supporting cast, despite a few. <<less

to be honest, I don't really write reviews.

it's because it's time consuming but the amount of negative reviews I see on this novel is a bit too much. Lol

i even registered an account to post this haha 😅
anyway, there are some who say that there are a lot of "plot holes" and that the MC is lame and not really good but I think you need to really read it before you can say anything.

i have read the whole first half of this novel (book1) and is now on book 2. The "plot holes" are very small and it makes it up as you go along as this is not a simple transmigration. You'd think he just came from modern Korea and then landed inside the novel? It's not that simple. For example he kept on saying he "worked at a company" before transmigrating..

Spoiler

the company is actually a beast/monster extermination organization post apocalypse and not really a "company" as he says. Its more of a group of people that defends the last remaining humans because they don't have any choice.

[collapse]

anyway, this is a great read. I mean it's not perfect obviously haha this is not a neil gaiman novel and really far from it but it is good as it is.
