Despite being a prodigy blessed with good looks, Chu Mian was unfortunately the unluckiest of his peers. Not only did he contract narcolepsy at the age when he should’ve been the most energetic, but after entering high school, he also met Yu Ran, who was infamous throughout the school for being a chuunibyou.

Yu Ran couldn’t contain his curiosity. “Chu Mian, do you fall asleep when you cross the road?”

Chu Mian: “No.”

Yu Ran: “Do you fall asleep when you are in the middle of ‘that’?”

Chu Mian: “…”

Later, Chu Mian discovered that every time his narcolepsy struck, he would wake up in the arms of the infamous chuunibyou.

A look at Yu Ran’s special titles: the little prince of (ruining) romantic talk, god of (weird) flirting, spreader of high(ly inappropriate) spirits, master (ab*ser) of idioms, expert at scoring (zero) on essays… Naturally, he’s also a person who has strong (Chu Mian loving) abilities.

Go to Chrysanthemum Garden to read the translated version.

I just don't understand why this novel has such a low rating because honestly, this novel is so so so good!

Just don't blindly follow some of these people saying that MC isn't likeable. Honestly, the synopsis and the tags both say that he is a chuunibyou so if you don't like chuunibyou then don't read. What's the point of berating our funny MC? MC is the sweetest thing ever. Anyways, now a serious review:

... more>> Story

The story follows the high school life of Yu Ran (MC), Chu Mian (ML), and their group of friends. It mainly focuses on MC trying his antics (cuz he can and wants to) and this slowly pulls ML out of his shell. The story has a proper theme 'narcolepsy' and the author handles it well throughout the story. So although the story is mainly comedy and high school life, it also teaches the readers about what narcolepsy is all about. So it isn't some brainless fluff. Anyways, there is NEVER a dull moment.

Characters

Characters are extremely well-written. You would never feel like "God, such 2D characters". All of the characters have distinct personality and the main leads don't rob the moment of shine of the side characters. MC and ML are so cute together. Due to circumstances, ML is forced to mature faster. He has this huge wall build around him and he never lets anyone come near him. But he is still a kid after all. So no matter how mature he is for his age, he still acts his age which is natural. On the other hand, MC's brain isn't like normal people. So, you shouldn't call him idiot. He just has a childish brain, but that doesn't mean he isn't smart. He has high EQ and can navigate social relationships far better than any of you who call him an "idiot" can.

The side characters are also all interesting and always add something of value to the story. They also have their own stories as well, which is rarely focused on Chinese web novels. Also, MC and ML don't treat their friends as some kind of lackeys, unlike basically every Chinese web novel.

Character Growth

ML has the most character growth. He breaks out of his shell, yeah! Some side characters also experience immense growth, especially, Ye Xi.

Romance

Romance is the cutest. Period. I might add something later if I feel like it.

Plot

The plot is all about passing highschool and chasing dreams. But because of ML's disease, this seemingly simple story gets better. A themed plot is always better anyways.

Comedy

Out of this world.

I have to admit that I have probably read this story like 6-7 times already, and it still manages to make me laugh. Yu Ran is just that funny. He doesn't have a sense of shame (his brain is wired differently, as I have already said). He doesn't try to be funny, but he is a walking, talking comedian. His every gesture, every dialogue, every thought is funny. Also, some of MC's friends and relatives trying to 'straighten' MC's thoughts makes the story even more hilarious.

Conclusion

This story is definitely the best comedy high school story ever! <<less

Damn this hyper kid is just like I was when I was younger. The ADHD is strong 🤣🤣. The way his thoughts are explained is so realistic. I really have that same flow of consciousness. How refreshing 🌸

Really enjoying this.

For the review saying the MC is annoying, and for the reviews saying how they can't understand how MC is annoying, I can kinda see both sides. Because MC was so, so annoying to me in the beginning.

So, let's talk first about our MC. In the beginning, he can be annoyingly chuuni sometimes. He has a lack of respect for teachers and those with authority, he idolizes delinquency, he's constantly breaking school rules and messing around, he has no regards for boundaries, especially ML's boundaries, he doesn't study or try... more>> hard in school. I can see why someone would think he's unlikeable. But he really grew on me. You get to see a bit of his childish naivety, his youthful passion, you can see him trying to help those dear to him in his own way. He's not a bad child, he's a very good one, in fact. Just, a tiny bit misguided. Watching him slowly fall in love with ML is really sweet.

And then there's the ML. At first glance, he's a bit standoffish and aloof. Sadly, that's not his fault as because he has narcolepsy, he collapses when he's too emotional, and it hard for him to make bonds with others when he sleeps so much. Despite that, he's really adorable and really hardworking. It's kinda cute how'll he'll tease the MC in his head internally.

MC is a bit dense in the relationship department. So if reading about a character who has feelings but mistakes then as something else frustrates you, this might not be you thing, but he's really naively cute! ML though. Pat pat, may MC realize his feelings soon.

I really like the two girls in their friend group. It's hard to see a single girl in bl sometimes, but this novel has 2! They're sweet and great friends. And it's really heartwarming how they support each other. Thank god for not being green tea b*tches.

All in all, good novel if you want a light hearted slice of life novel with a dense protagonist who's a bit lacking in the EQ department, but also completely overqualified in the EQ department. <<less

I don’t know why someone says that Yu Ran is annoying, he is actually such lovable character. And I can’t say that story goes only from his pov, we also can see how Chu Mian feels and know his thoughts. Both characters are so sweet. Chu Mian is very shy and kinda tsundere, Yu Ran is so pure. I love them.

I hate it when they're 4 chapters in and they think they know the MC 🙊

Anyway, I just witnessed a chuunibyou evolve into a sweet boyfriend.

MC was almost built like a shounen wimpy-with-a-strong-heart MC. Along with his denseness, it was really hard to see how'd the romance come about. ML did great with his patience. In more ways than one. And that's what I liked about him most + seeing his growth. -1 star cause it felt like a chore to read towards the end. But I still looked forward... more>> to their further development so maybe it's just my reading mood that shifted. Kinda s**ked that the friend group faded away. They were wholesome friends. It also s**ked that aside from MCs, all other characters had no character growth or conclusion.

But overall, still like the youthful vibe. And I also liked the guessing who's gonna be gong/shou in the first half cause I didn't check the tags, hehe. <<less

The aura of youth is very strong in this one.

Very slice of life but not dull. Well-structured, well-paced, and the characters are so interesting. None of the trope-y & cliched character setups that youth-oriented love stories often have.

Reading this truly felt like watching kids grow up, learning more about themselves and other wordly affairs. It was quite fascinating.

The love story was also very cute. It didn't have drama, angst, or any other embellishments typical to youth BL. But it was very heartwarming and pink bubbly all the same.

This is the first time I’ve written a review, and I thought a lot about it before writing because this novel has a 4.4 rating, and I honestly think it deserves more. My honest opinion about the MC and ML at the beginning of the novel: both of them are ANNOYING ASF, and I thought about leaving the novel so many times... But then I realized they’re literally kids! It’s normal for them to be a little annoying or immature, especially Yu Ran, who is more childish than most of... more>> the other characters. As the story progresses, we can see how sweet Yu Ran and Chu Mian are, and the reading becomes more enjoyable and so freaking sweet. My heart really warmed as I read, and I fell in love with how sweet the story and the characters are. It’s the first time I’ve seen children actually acting like children in a novel, and growing and maturing as the story progresses. The beginning may be awkward or annoying, but give it a chance. It’s a sweet story about teenage love.

Their friendship progresses rather quickly, and the chapters are so sweet and fun to read. It’s rare for me to laugh while reading something, and this story made me laugh several times! Okay, I confess, I skipped some parts or took a break at certain moments because... it can get a little too embarrassing, even for me, and I have strong nerves... But the story is so good... There’s nothing too complex, so if you prefer deep and complicated stories, this novel might not appeal to you as much. But it’s perfect when you’re in a reading slump and tired of thinking too much. It’s comfortable to read and enjoyable to spend an afternoon with on a Sunday, lol.

It has its flaws like any other story and won’t meet everyone’s expectations, and I also don’t think it’s a 5-star novel. But honestly, I think you’re underestimating this story. Sorry for my bad English! I wrote this using my broken English and got some help from ChatGPT. Brazilian here.

Now some negative points: I don’t like how some people treat Yu Ran like an idiot or openly talk about something being wrong with his brain. Yes, it’s done in a joking manner, but I find it a bit mean, especially since even Chu Mian sometimes jokes about Yu Ran being dumb or mentally incapacitated, when in fact, Yu Ran is a very intelligent, lively, and playful young man. He just thinks a bit differently from most people and sees the world from a unique perspective, but that doesn’t make him inferior or an idiot. If the jokes and comments had been more restrained, I would have been okay with them — they weren’t exaggerated, but I feel that at times they were unnecessary. A conversation with Yu Ran to explain things would have been better.

I also started to find it a bit dragged out after chapter 90. It’s a slice-of-life, so it’s obvious it would be somewhat slow-paced, but I think it became a little tedious to read, and I felt like dropping it out of “exhaustion” as well. But I finished it, and I feel happy about that. <<less

The amount of second hand embarrassment I got from this Yu Ran is enough to light up 5 cities, but for all of his empty brain steering this car, he is super sweet and caring.

These are kids. These are MY kids. And I got to watch them grow up.

Truly, it makes me miss my high school days despite not a lot of things happening.

Very good novel! This is by far the best school life shounen ai story I've read!!! It was cute and had lots of humour. The characters are all very lovable and I especially adored all the comedy that yu ran brought to the story, I love him soooo much! He's the cutest, funniest baby ever.

I also love miemie, he's the softest adorable baby and deserves all the love. The main couple are veryy cute and I just love them both!

It's a very feel good fluffy story. Very good,... more>> when you want to read something light and just comforting. Definitely give this a read!

- Until my next review, Ciao ~

I loved every second of reading this <3

Truly such a good read, it's lighthearted, wholesome with just the right amount of emotions. You'll find yourself laughing at Yu Ran & his antics on every chapter while feeling a sense of nostalgia and bittersweetness at watching them go.

I felt for Chu Mian's struggles, I admired the characters' determination and passion for their dreams which in turn made me inspired to pursue my own :")

I felt so attached to these characters and felt nostalgia even though I myself haven't experienced these... more>> moments.

The characters are oh so lovable and I can't help rooting for them always ☹️

I loved watching them grow and I'd read a thousand more chapters of their daily lives if I could. Their growth as characters and within their relationships with others make me so happy.

It's ordinary in the way that You Ran and Chu Mian are any other high school students who have a dream, who have mood swings, who play and study, kinda dumb but passionate and happy. Despite that, the way the author writes and tells their story is anything but ordinary. (Though I say that, a bit of it's charm is that it IS ordinary, it makes it more relatable, entertaining and fun to read when you can see yourselves and others in the characters you read :))

I loved reading Yu Ran's essays too, the author made something as ordinary and "boring" as studying for a test, doing assignments and preparing for entrance tests so fun and captivating.

Amidst reading it, I briefly considered learning Chinese and it's culture simply because I wanted to relate an understand the story just a little bit deeper.

I hope to achieve my dreams like Yu Ran and Chu Mian did. Not without a little challenge and full of confidence, discipline, and hard work.

Thank you so much author! And translater Pia Pia !!! Thank you Lord for giving m he ability to read because this story has given me a decade's worth of smiles and laughter.

I hope to one day own a physical copy of it and hope that this wonderful story gets adapted into different forms of art too!!! <<less

The story is not anything outstanding but I haven't laughed out loud so much in a while. I was hoping for a better ending or something. The last 10% was a little of a drag, I didn't feel much. Somethings remain unresolved but I guess it is just that type of feel good story. Cute cute!

READ IT.

No words can explain how much I love this. This is the perfect danmei to read if you wish to not rack up your brains and only focus on the youthful and cuteness of the story. This was a refreshing read for me, honestly, since most of the danmei I always read would require me to take a moment and analyze the story closely 'cause it involves action or even some educational aspects (though I like it). I love the character development of the MC as well... more>> as ml, I adore how mc's brain kind of works differently and it never failed to make me laugh. Ml's patience is something to be worshiped, he is so down bad for MC lol. To be honest, I don't remember being annoyed by MC in the first chapters like according to the reviews of other people, maybe I just prefer an MC who can be carefree and kind of a rebellious (not too much though, the MC here is okay).

Haha, I don't get the people that are 4 chapters in and think they know MC and proceeds to call him annoying asf.

I honestly am thankful that the story is long and kind of slowburn, lest if it was short I would be crying right now and begging for more.

Yeah, in conclusion, I recommend this novel if you wish for a youthful story where you'll witness two teenagers slowly fall for another. It's cute how inexperienced they are, but that's to be expected since they were I think about

Moral of the story, don't be too quick to judge when you have yet to even read at least 10 chapters lol. And, yes, this is targeted. I really hope Novelupdates will update the site so I can reply to people. <<less

I actually didn't get invested with the story. The more chapters I read the more draggy it feels. No conflicts at all, it's more of a daily life happenings kinda plot. Others may love it but I'm gonna drop this at 50th chap. May pick it up if I'm up for this type of story.

this was a really great read, I enjoyed the first half but ill admit the last bit of the book did slightly get bland and I seem to have gotten lost cuz of mtl and couldn't clearly tell what was going on with the characters' life...

both MC and ML are so cute but idk if I just didn't catch it but I really wanted to know who the top was...I think it hinted at MC (chu mian) but could be ML as well...

i think its pretty much dual p.o.v actually...... more>> on the other side, I won't understand the relevance of the title with the novel. I'd have expected a more fiery or passionate romance but IMO it was purer and more stable.

a 3.5 rounded to 4, anyway it's a comfortable read to pass the time. <<less
