I can't believe this is getting translated! I read this novel using mtl years ago after I found it on jjwxc (its fairly popular there) and it's one of my favorite novels I reread it all the time. This novel is a bit long (250+ chapters) but it is very entrancing and while not everything is all ups and downs, its entertaining from beginning to end and makes you feel many emotions. The authors writing is a bit simple, but I think it's moving in its simplicity. I will try... more>> my best to describe all its good points and hopefully this novel will pick up steam and get more popular here. This review will contain spoilers.

The story is based in the Warlord Era of China and has a seme protagonist. The MC is a writer from modern times who transmigrates into a sickly 16-17 year old boy that now has to support his mother and sister alone due to his scumbag dad. The novel shows the chaos of the era, but there is not too much heartbreak, but more showing the struggles and conflicts of the times, while showing a brighter future ahead and how they can all go towards it. The MC doesn't immediately change his life around by writing novels, because at the time he had no abilities, no money, and no famous name. But instead he realistically does odd jobs and then becomes a waiter at a western style restaurant. There, he utilizes his future knowledge and speaking skills to draw more customers. He then goes on to improve the life of his sister and mother. After that, he publishes his first work and it's upwards from there as he gains fame and in turn gets more attached to this era and worries about the future and the people. Each novel the MC writes under 3 different aliases is based on ideas and thoughts about the time period or to convey a certain idea of his. These novel by themselves are quite well written, they are both informational and just have interesting plots, and even I would want to read them. A couple of examples of his books:

Spoiler

The first novel he writes is about a travel abroad student, during this time when the west was viewed as superior and going abroad was deemed to be very sought after. He wanted to write about the truths of studying abroad (the discrimination, the hardships) and he did this by writing a love story. Even the romance is meaningful because the hero of the book ends up with a woman that was once a concubine, showing that chastity is nothing and the hero simply loves her, which at the time was frowned upon due to things like purity etc.

He also writes more comedic short stories to tackle things like misogyny and the shackles on women. This story was fun and it was a about a man that comes to a world where genders are reversed and men have to wear corsets to make their waists thinner and appeal to women.

There are books about a wandering beggar child that experiences the happiness and sadness of life, bringing attention to the homeless children in this time period.

There are also stories that contain real life events through his third alias and this shows the horror of japanese massacres which were covered up during this time period, bringing it to the attention of the public and warning chinese citizens of impending conflict.

There are also books that bring hope for the future, such as a book set in the "future" written about late 1900s china that shows the gradually inproving state of the country, which makes readers yearn for it.

To put it simply all his books are meaningful and I likes all of them. The only things he doesn't write about are things that could get him killed lol (like the warlords).

But the MC doesn't just write novels, but he also takes action to influence this era towards a better future. He makes an orphanage for the homeless children, he strives hard to change the perception of women by writing very well written female characters in his books, he also

reveals the way to make penicillin, a major health discovery for the time. And also unviels a spy that would cause great harm fo china in the future.

His thoughts and ideologies are very upright and you can see he does alot to contribute his abilities to the people around him. Both his mother and sister benefit from his modern thinking and really blossom as independent women. He's just such a great character, with some flaws and weaknesses, besides having a way with words and knowing the future, he has no other abilities. But his influence is very large nonetheless and you can really tell how good of a person he is.

The Second ML, the MC love interest, is also a rather interesting character imo. I think most love interests of a seme protagonist are more the cute type, but not ML here. ML here is a skilled doctor and a mature and handsome man with a bit of a cold temperment. He has great responsibilities and abilities in his own field, just like MC. But he has a hidden identity that I think really elevated his character, especially his family background made him so interesting. He is

The son of a warlord and he is the third of 4 sons. When he was young, his father fell into trouble and sent him and his two older brothers and mother abroad to escape the struggles. There, he suffered discrimation and abuse and poverty, but he worked hard to get out of it and even became the backbone of his older brothers, helping them avoid worse fates like being addicted to drugs etc. This makes his brothers very indebted to him and even when he gets with MC, they act as wingmen and shield him from the angry parents.

His identity actually gives him a very cruel and mu*derous side outside of his polite demeaner that MC himself only sees later. But he is not crazy, but rather a calm and decisive cruelty that fits his identity. I also really like the fact that he is gay from the very beginning and takes an interest in MC when he is a waiter, later falls in love with his literary talent and kindness, then pursues him in a very gentlemanly way with slight schemes and tricks lol. He believes in a longlasting and steady relationship and he got that with MC. MC at first only admires his identity as a doctor and his character (MC isn't gay at first) but is moved by him gradually.

ML brothers are really good too. We get some good scenes with his second brother and younger brother. His second brother is business and profit oriented with a temper and follows his father. I liked him most because once he realized ML liked MC, he encouraged ML to be more ruffian and just snatch him up lol. For him his brother is a catch and deserves to be with whoever he likes, even if by force lol. As for the fourth child, he is more innocent and is scared of his brothers. Because he is the only one with a different mother and grew up very peacefully while they struggled abroad, all the brothers have conflicted feelings over him. But they arent too bad to him tho aside from some bullying. He is MC fanboy lol. The oldest bro rarely shows up, but he is calm and also tries his best to protect ML out of gratefulness.

Tbh even though ML doesn't always show up, when he does I'm focused entirely on him. His whole backstory and persona made me want him to have his own book that focused on him because I'm just so curious about him. I'm glad we didn't get a cookie cutter ML. He's not even shy at all in the book. He's very attractive as a person. Anyway him and MC were a lovely couple.

The other side characters also get development and even though there's not too much focus, they are decently fleshed out and make for a fuller story. The plot also flows well and since the MC times his books to kind of match what is going on in the outside world, we are somewhat clear on the state of China at this time and how much progress it is undergoing socially and politically. However it never drones or focuses too much on these, but rather on the people of China and how they are affected. This makes MC less of a bystander of this era, but a participant. One of my favorite scenes for both MC and ML is when
Spoiler

A disease breaks out and ML goes to the scene to help find a cure at risk of his health. MC goes because he was writing a book about a doctor. Their self sacrificial spirit really moved me.

This story is actually a bit nationalistic, but I don't mind bc it's unrealistic to not write about nationalism during such a sensitive time period in chinas history. Even tho this story is more alternative history and obviously fiction, if nationalism is ignored then its a glaring plot hole. Even the conflicts with Japan aren't entirely made up but based loosely real history. So if that bothers you skip but it made alot of sense to me and never bothered me. To write peacefully about an enemy country during conflicts wouldnt even make sense.

Anyway this is a very good novel. It might seen long, but you won't even feel it's length. I think it's quite socially aware and the author has unique ideas and thoughts especially in pertains to MCs novels. The writing is simple, but smooth. The romance is not at the forefront, but it is there and makes progress. The MC is very admirable and it's hard not to like him. The ending is HE and also makes sense for what happens next
Spoiler

After the warlord period ends in the dissolution of all warlords (prob including ML father) the country falls into chaos with various forces and ML and MC go abroad with family. With MC vision, they make alot of money abroad and use it to help China. MC is later remembered well and all his vests (aliases) are revealed by the public after his death.
