The Trembling World

Several hundred thousand players are trapped in a gritty zombie apocalypse survival game just after game launch. There are hints that deaths in the game might be serving some other terrible purpose in the background of reality…

The main character, Liu Gan, is a quadruple amputee in real life. A quirk in the server code recognized his prosthetic limbs as ‘real limbs’ in game, giving him ‘normal’ arms and legs that nonetheless have the strength and power of steel limbs, and thus far more power than a normal player. With this minor cheat helping him survive the early stages of the game, Liu Gan sets out to find out what exactly is going on, and to endure as long as he can.

I'm normally generous when grading Light Novels. But I can't, I just can't do the same with this LN. The MC is very unlikable, too much of an a**hole, douche, whatever.

I know that this is the 'Survival of the Fittest' or whatever you may call it. But really, there are dozens of different ways to handle the situation without being a douchebag. What he experienced may be 'Reality', and other readers may defend the MC's actions as 'Realistic', but I don't think it's realistic at all. Who the hell throws... more>> an axe at the head of someone who only stole a bottle of water (At the EARLY stages of the story) ? Who the hell trades off a woman (for r*pe) just to survive (At the EARLY stages of the story) ? Who the hell categorizes other people as 'Cannon Fodder' (At the EARLY stages of the story) ?

Realistic? Calling it as a Means to Survive? If you're in the same situation, would you Honestly do that?

No matter what anyone may say, I really really do not like this MC.

Defend him all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that the MC is a glorified a**hole.

Those reviews defending this a**hole... those readers are even comparing Japanese novels to Chinese novels (completely out of topic, just want to bash Japanese novels, I guess), and bashing 'Hypocrite MCs' that chose Not to be an a**hole.

Kinda counterproductive.

Well, to each their own, but if there ever was an Apocalypse, I sure as hell don't want to be near those other readers that defended this MC, because hey, they said the MC's actions (Axing the head, Trading Women, Categorizing people like Cattle) are 'Logical', 'Realistic', and 'Justified'...

The author also loves to be redundant when describing things. Like in one paragraph he describes something, then in the next paragraph he describes the same thing, then in the paragraph after the next, he also describes the Same. Damn. Thing.

If you cut 75% of the author's rambling, you'll still be able to understand the story because it's just a bunch of repetitions.

This is only my opinion. This LN is shitty. Read it if you want. <<less

The MC in this novel is a bastard, etc. So bastard that it's interesting treating people as canon fodder. It's so rare to find MC that morally bankrupt, that's why it's many times better than those hypocrite MC or Japanese cliche MC that like to spouting justice nonsense.

What is up with all the bad reviews? Do yourself a favor and KEEP READING. Don't listen to these idealistic reviews.

Definitely deserves a lot better!! People are forgetting that MC has been a recluse without arms/legs for 1 YEAR and been living alone as a social outcast in a mansion up in the middle of nowhere. He has forgotten how to communicate with people.

When you read that, you understand WHY he's such an a**hole. Would you even want to live without arms and legs if it happened to you?... more>> You can attribute his bad manners to that. Not everyone has to fit your fake utopia personality, where you save every single person without caring about your life. THIS IS REALITY. Most of the readers would watch from afar if zombies started killing their friends. Let's be serious here.

Yea he is an as*hole at certain parts but I stuck with the novel and it's good especially if you like the Zombie genre. He gets better at least, and the story goes on.

I gave it a 5 to offset the horrible, unwarranted 1 stars. I seem to do that a lot on this site. I mean, when you have tr*sh novels with 4-5 stars and The Trembling World is a 3.4?! Please... <<less

Ugh... Just Ugh... I can forgive the MC being a complete as*hole (even when it's completely unnecessary) but the writing is worse than in xianxias. Literally 50% of every chapter is the author just repeating himself in different ways, 25% is completely irrelevant description or 'thought processes' of the MC. That leaves us about 25% plot progression and bits about the MC being a d*ckweed. Oh and get this, each chapter seems to be on average shorter than most other stories.

The MC literally spent 10 marooned on a f*cking... more>> billboard. It was just him soliloquizing about random issues and antics of zombies. Like f*ck we know zombies are bloodthirsty etc etc we don't need to be reminded every chapter. Then there was 2 chapters of the MC trying to be Sherlock Holmes. I mean Jesus Christ it's enough to know if a building is clear, you don't need multiple theories on how sh*t went down to the original occupants. Review as of 30 chapters. Can't be bothered reading anymore. And what kind of game doesn't leave drops? <<less

I rate this novel as 5. I don't know why others view the MC as no good but to me it's logical. The behavior and attitude is in tune with the situation. So all I can say is nice story, nice character development. Looking forward for more to come. I highly recommend this novel to those you like post apocalyptic scenarios.

Read it. Beh. There's so many negative people. Look at the tags. Ruthless MC, Zombies survival. Do I like zombie survival? No. I think Zombies are generic, overdone, and boring. Do I like this story? Very much so. Similar to many Chinese games, leveling up is incredibly slow. The difference between levels is massive. The MC being the MC, has an ability that, roughly speaking, gives him an extra level worth of power. However, the game tries to be balanced, and makes things harder for him. Considering he's not dead,... more>> it's safe to assume that whatever didn't kill him made him stronger.

Many, many characters die. The main character is also an a**hole. It's great. I'm one of those people who is perfectly okay with the main character doing whatever he wants, and I'm just there for the ride. R*pe and pillage if you want, it's fine, it's a book. Doesn't really bother me. Now if he does things without purpose, and doesn't feel remotely like a person, I lose interest. This is a character who came from a rich family, with a lot of scheming, and came from a miserable life. For example, to the idiot reviewer who said "He threw an axe at someone who stole a water bottle." Yes. One water bottel from three packs, as well as the bag containing ALL OF THE FOOD! Not only that, why wouldn't you kill him? He spent a while explaining his reasoning. He's an as*hole who betrayed the group, and killing him sets the precedent of "Don't f*ck with me." EARLY IN THE STORY, bah! He's consistent. He ditches people countless times, and eventually starts to like a few people, grow actually attached to them. Read and judge for yourself. There's plenty of development going on for every character, if they die or not, and it's enjoyable.

Honestly, I get and agree with the impression that in this world, a bit of kindness in the wrong place will get you killed. It's even demonstrated in several places. In this world, why would you be nice? And if he had been nicer earlier in the story, his fate would've been worse. Simply, everything he sees reinforces that viewpoint. You think you need a particular reason for him to turn ruthless? He lost all his limbs once! Do you think there's no story there?! He has his reasons, he feels like a person, the story is exciting, and sh*t happens. We both know you have no life, read it and see if you like it. <<less

This story is TERRIBLE. Nearly 60 chapters in and NOTHING has happened. The first 10 chapters the MC does nothing, and then gets trapped on a billboard. He then proceeds to actual have a fight, then files back to doing nothing for 40+ chapters. NOTHING HAPPENS. This has to be one of the most boring stories I've ever read. I WISH I could get the time I wasted reading so far back. Don't read this story. Just don't.

I see a lot of bad reviews, but ignore those. The novel is actually good. I haven't noticed any heavy repetition in any chapters other than the first few. The premise is the common "trapped in a vr world" but it still is a good novel. The MC isn't uncessarily cold all his decisions are based on logic, and the fact he was alone and crippled would cause anyone to be emotionally disconnected from others. The MC helps others to an extent, I found it refreshing that he wasn't a... more>> naive "save everyone" type of MC. If I have to say any problems I have with the novel it would be, the naive side characters causing themselves to die or someone around them. But the novel is still within the first week of the game starting so it's understandable. Other than that it's an enjoyable novel. <<less

To anyone looking to read this, and this was said by the TS as well, very little happened in the first 60-80 chapters, so if you don't like slow things, just turn around. Now my opinion, fist MC is a straight a**hole, but is refreshing when compared to somethings that are out now. Now alot of people say he is an ass for no reason, which is false, it explains all of his choices logically and clearly. If we look at MC in the first 30c he is like what... more>> people say, but once we get past fatty, it really picks up. And most of the complaints are cleared up in the first 60-80 chapters. To any that cared to read this, stick with it, give it a chance, I promise you, once you get past chapter 70 or so, you won't want to put it down. I read all 216c in 2.5 days, that is how much you will enjoy it if you just stick with it. Thanks for reading. <<less

I love a good zombie novel but unfortunately this isn't a good one.

First the MC is too much of a d*ck that only cares for his own ass besides making dumb decisions like runing away from zombies by climbing a pole he could only survive if he grow wings and fly or using his plot armor.

The side characters are all left to die by the MC since he didn`t found use on them even if they are decent people like a fatty and a beautiful girl, sure they mess up... more>> a little but nothing that desarves him leaving them and he doing that meant there deaths or becaming somebody plaything.

Later he took a few as*hole players as pawns but you just don`t care about them at all since they are just a bunch of rapists while the useless fatty and the beautiful girl that he left were abandoned and that makes you care even less.

Best character is by far a android Galaxy he found in a Umbrella crop she is like KOS-MOS from Xenosaga and not only kick some ass but it`s also a Big b**bs chick with a funny personality that demands the MC to look for better upgrades for her, she doesnt let him touch her until he raise her intimancy points lol. Pretty much every male survivor gets a boner when looking at her until they see her riping zombies apart with her fingers lmao. <<less

This novel took me about a dozen tries to even get this far, I'm still forcing my way forward just to try and prove myself wrong.

Many people are hating that the MC is a massive a$$hole, but so what? Why can't the captain of the d!ck brigade be an mc? My problem is pretty much everything else with the MC, especially his rationale.

So he fell asleep on Mount Everest, got frostbite to all his limbs, had them amputated and replaced with robot limbs (or whatever it was, I'm not going... more>> back to check for 100% accuracy). He was also a rich 2nd generation and did lots of extreme sports, a strong emphasis on parkour which is basically the authors fap service which came across like a 13 year old kid going "Parkour is sick!". However, the author is the god of this novel and I be but a witness so I can take that much in good faith.

The MC almost immediately forgets this is a game, despite only just starting it, and only remembers momentarily when an NPC presents itself. He's not 70, why does the MC have dementia. Perhaps you can call it as trauma over the sudden bloodiness in the game, but I just can't look at it that way.

Next is the irrational and paranoid thoughts that just pop up in the MCs head. An npc helicopter is coming, which can be his rescue, and his immediate thoughts are worries that they are going to lock him up in a lab, experiment on him and cut him open. Maybe even try to give him the infection and see if he will turn into a zombie. And it isn't even just once he thought this. I mean, wtf, where did this just come from? He is a rich second gen who used to have a great life, and surely great friends to boot, not some paranoid teenager who is constantly bullied in school and beaten by his single father who blames him for his mothers death (just a cliche scenario, not this actual story)

And another one would be when he comes down from what is essentially the giant lightning rod he climbed up. All the zombies that were swarming around the giant billboard post and keeping him trapped up there finally started to leave and he comes down. He wants to get some experience kill some of the stragglers and get experience points to level up, which I think is a f?cking fantastic idea. So he chooses to assassinate the half dead boss zombie... with a hand grenade. Again, wtf, how can you possibly put assassination and hand grenade together?? Perhaps a surprise attack, and explosive sucker punch so to speak, but assassinate? It doesn't work that way, because anyone would know an exploding hand grenade make a massive amount of noise, which would alternatively destroy your whole plan of escaping while the zombies are not all attracted to the massive amount of noise you are going to create. This was possibly the second biggest brain fart the author put in the MC after the unreasonable and unnecessary paranoia.

I got all this in the first 13 chapters, and I'm seriously not looking forward to the next bakers dozen. But please author, please make the MC the be as much of a filthy arsewad as the others reviews make him out to be, that way I can at least give you a three stars out of five for creativity and trying fresh ideas. <<less

Okay, so there seems to be quite a lot of confused reviewers on here so I decided to read this and find out what all the fuss is about.

Spoiler

I won't hold back on the spoilers now~ so get ready for some real talk.

So here we are with our four limb amputee n33t, previous profession; detective climber* who has been without arms and legs for one year due to something to do with losing his sleeping bag while out climbing, don't you just hate it when that happens?! One time I lost my mobile and stubbed my toe on a bed leg, if that bed leg was a chainsaw perhaps my loss of mobile would have left me a crippling too...

So what are all the reviews confused about? It's his personality.

Like most Chinese introvert tsundre men he loves not telling anyone anything, (including the reader) it seems to be a common theme to build discord among these guys, here is an example of one thing that happens - 'early in the story he is ganged up by a bunch of rapist thugs threatening him with a bunch of grenades and telling him to present his food and women, annoyed by the fact he was in this situation due to the woman being incapable of waking him he decides to use her as bait, wrapping her up like a pretzel since he hasn't told her his plan and she is resisting, next he gets blocked by his good guy companion who is trying to stop him, so he tells him how he is just using her as bait quickly¿ he doesn't do that? Is it because that would be more realistic for tricking the thugs? nope, he has a "he wouldn't understand anyway so I'm just going to let him see the result" mentality - throwing in some internal conflict, so he presents her like a gift wrapped good and pledges his allegiance only to offer his fist right after, this 'tricking people' is a common accurance as well.'

So he is being sold by the author as a good guy in deniel, even his inner dialog being tsun, he always has to have some inner dialogue on how he's only helping others for his own benefits whenever he helps someone, "I'm only helping his wound because this way I will know if healing is improved on level up." Or "I'm only grouping with these guys because they would make good Canon fodder." Or "Now that I have my 'pet' robot I no longer need to group with anyone, huh there are three guys over there in trouble and one is my classmate, I'll only help them because one of them was my classmate!" Etc etc, if this was the common Chinese zombie novel the MC really would stay by himself and would only help the damsel in distress for future harem candidate or the 'unique' fatty character because everyone knows the fatties are the most loyal, (also they're ugly so they're unlikely to steal any of the harem members) but nah our MC is just a lonely tsun and is looking for some friends, but you better stay away because everyone the MC touches will die (in the most s*upid of ways) at some point (unless it's a single and hot girl... obviously). So yeah most of the subcharaters perspective is pointless since they will be quickly killed off, only read the inner dialogs of the mc? Didn't I tell you he's lying to himself already?? So yeah pretty much just skim through all of the inner dialog because it's all pointless information and you have yourself an okay zombie novel it's just a bit on the boring side.

So here is the main question, Is the MC a selfish ass like half of the reviews are sprouting in the review section?

Show me a Chinese zombie novel where the the character isn't an ass, I've read five other Chinese zombie novels where the MC is much worse so to me, in comparison to the rest - he might as well be the holy saint himself, letting us farm from him and power leveling us, I mean who doesn't want to be power levelled?

[collapse]

Tl:DR = Is the MC an ass?

Throw him into a Japanese light novel and he's the devil incarnate.

But in a Chinese zombie novel he's really not that bad at all.

  • So if you want to read a kind character who is looking to find a little loli to mofu mofu in his daily high school life of zombie apocalypse then be my guest and go find your poison, I'd recommend a Japanese novel though.
As a personal review on the novel as a whole though is just that it's very average due to most dialog being pointless to read and the story being super slow due to the excessive amount of it, don't agree with me? 125 chapters in and he's still level 5 and he even skipped level 3 - double leveling straight to 4 from 2, if that's not slow leveling I don't know what is. <<less

Another story which is probably not really thought through. Without plausible backround it feels confused.

The chapters are a bit short and some of those do not help to advance the story. Well, it is readable but neither engaging nor novel. There may be some character development in the future, but right now it is lacking. And while the MC is still bearable everyone else is kind of ret*rded and outright s*upid.

What really annoyed me is the point that every second chapter the author mentioned again and again that the MC... more>> is some parcour superman, while he is waiting for 5 or so chapters on a pole for something to happen, instead of moving his ass. It feels like there might be some hope in and for future chapters, the beginning is quite crappy. <<less

The MC's personality is kinda Brutal? Other human besides the MC is cannon fodder for him. It's borderline good (if you like savage and villain-like MC) and bad (obviously morally wrong) at the same time.

I won't lie though, I expect it to be as good as God and Devil World which is not (at the moment: ch.24)

So it's a meh for me. If you have too much freetime you could read this.

There are a lot of mix reviews so I had no choice but to read it myself. To those curious please read on... This Novel is ok. It's pretty bland but its interesting in its own way. I don't think the MC cruel at all. I praise him for wanting to survive. It's just the other characters are too s*upid and deserve death! MC did nothing wrong. But there's really no goal at all and it does get boring after awhile since all we see him is get stronger. I... more>> extremely recommend you read "Bringing the Supermarket to the Apocalypse" instead. After reading this Trembling World. Only do I realize now that "BSA" took a lot of ideas off this and made it better. It goes on a nicer route.

Spoiler

Fatty, pretty girl...

I really think "The Terming World" is interesting because NPCs have a mind of their own but... Players actually r*pe these NPCs. Its too weird. I wonder if they actually see them as Real Humans or AIs that aren't alive?

[collapse]

But yeah I see no point in reading further since he will never have a 'real relationship.' As much as I love Solo Players, there's really no genuine plot to keep it at work <<less

This a very good novel, dont listen to the other people saying that the MC is evil and only cares about himself. If you continue to read on you will find that the MC is growing and changing with time at the point im at in the story the MC is in charge of nearly 4000 people and is trying to make and army, even tho he as his own reasons he's not a loner that dont know how to work with people. In the beginning, everyone wants the MC... more>> to team with people that is either weak or will betray him and saying he's not nice because he will leave people behind... Come on people, who can be nice in that situation were its every man for himself. Only the strong afford to be nice which is what happens with our MC as he gets stronger he opens up to more ppl because he know's he can defend himself if they go against him. Read it for your selves!!!!!

Spoiler

Later on in story it was implied that his brother or a family member might be the one responsible for the MC being a cripple before he entered the game, this may also be the reason that the MC is ruthless and dont trust people that easy. Also the broadcast girl and the fat guy that had been in the first group with him that he abandoned (for good reasons in my opinion) even tho the fat guy had died the girl is still alive, there is a lot more stuff but I wont say. I recommend for people read the comments that shows the progress of how far that person reads... you guys may one day lose out on a gem novel because you believe the people that barely reach anywhere or dont show there progress.

The story is quite boring. I guess it's because of the author's style. The main character is a quadruple amputee, second generation rich (parents make the money). He gets stuck in a game and he also rediscovers the feeling of his legs and arms. After a few seconds he enters a battle with 9 other gamers against a lot of zombies. All this leads him to climb up a poll to take refuge. I won't continue reading this, too long and repetitive.

The author gives too much useless information about the... more>> MC. It's good that he's trying to give some depth to the character and thus giving us a way to understand the MC's actions. But 《It is not because we can do it that we should》. The main point is that the author focuses to much on certain aspect of the story (in this case the MC). From my point of view it's the first story the author is publishing or he is using this novel as a test to try out some stuff.

On the short run, it can have some effects and be intersting but on the long term it gets really annoying. Beside all this, the characters actions are not unfounded, though cowardly, he is in an apocalypse world where humans should act cowardly. Some should think that they have nothing to lose beside their lives, others would think of taking shelter somewhere and hide until the end. If I was in a world where everyone was on his own, I wouldn't trust anyone.

TL;DR
Too long + repetitive = boring
Too much useless information
Author is propably trying a new style
MC is a bastard, but that's logic in his situation

Anyways, I do respect the author for trying out new stuffs if I guessed right. I thank the translators for translating a story which has a so much negative feedbacks. Please do not be discouraged by this review.

Unfortunately I do not recommend this novel. <<less

Great story, its not like the other novels that ive read where everything goes the way the MC wants, its really realistic. The MC is quite strong and capable, the only downside of this novel is the amount of characters, I can never remember everyones names and the introduced characters die too quickly which makes it even harder.

Could get 3 stars. Nothing epic but still readable if you like the premisse.

The thing that makes this a 2 star book is the idiocy of some side characters. Sometimes I feel like pulling my hair seeing how s*upid some characters are.

Obs.: MC is actually pretty cool headed so the problem is only the side characters.

... more>> I dont feel like spoiling to give a example since out of context (or without a huge ass explanation) you guys wont understand how frustating those characters actions can be.

I know this sounds like a rant but I still think it is fair review. A 3 star zombie apocalipse/Game elements novel with times where the side characters actions will make you ask yourself if you really should still be reading this.

Reading chapter 260 that is exactly how I feel. Should I pick this up again after waking up?

Edit: So yeah, dropped after reaching c290 or so. Shoulda have dropped sooner, those characters are getting worse... <<less

This is a niche read, if you don't like zombie and trapped in a death game themes you wont like this novel. The story progresses slowly at times because nothing is going on, and then sh*t is actually happens and its a very good read. Main character becomes a pro survivalist/ zombie killer fairly early on and has a very dickish personality. I like it hes very methodical and picky in the actions hes takes and theres lots of brutal killing and death. Some things are very obviously predicted by... more>> the reader, like well that guy is gonna die because of this and okay the author just set this person to die because of that but its still interesting to see what is going to happen next and how it actually unfolds. <<less
