The Seventh Year the Demon King Captured the Holy Monarch

In the year 891 of the Glorious Calendar, a new Demon King was born at the bottom of the abyss.

The demon race that has been sealed for over two hundred years resurfaced from the abyss, defeating the human race and making them constantly retreat.

The army pushed towards the royal city, and the Holy Monarch of the human race fought alone against the Demon King for three days and three nights. The protection of the God of Light never came until the Holy Monarch was exhausted and defeated.

The desperate people insulted him, spurned him, and insisted that his conviction must be impure. Even questioning the conviction itself, allowing the raging fire to burn down the Brett Temple.

Three days later, the demon army mysteriously retreated.

And disappeared together, was also the trace of the Holy Monarch.

People who were too regretful searched everywhere, but no one knew where the young king, who had always been kind, had gone.

Until the spring breeze melted the snow in the ruins of the temple, and the autumn breeze buried the withered herbs.

****

It was said that in those days, as a condition for retreating, the Demon King took away a human as his own spoil and s*ave.

The s*ave has a pair of violet eyes, and when they smile, it always feels a bit sad. It was none other than His Majesty the Holy Monarch who once lived in the temple.
  .
One afternoon, after a long time, the flowers of the Gasuo Abyss bloomed.

Flowers were planted by the s*ave themselves, the Demon King had mocked him a lot at that time, because human flowers will never bloom in the abyss.

Unexpectedly, they really thrive, resulting in the Demon King to be in a good mood. Thinking about his past of venting hatred and harm on the s*ave, but now that the times have changed, it has become a relationship where he can snuggle up and admire the flowers together.

The Demon King believed that in the future, he could be more kind to the s*ave. For example, stop making this person a s*ave and choose a good day to be crowned as the Queen of the Demon King.

Langmuir quietly rested on the Demon King’s shoulder, with a clear light in his eyes.

Stepping into this dark abyss for seven years, it feels like a big dream. Now, he knew clearly that he had run out of oil and was about to die.

But today, he is fortunate to see the flowers blooming in the abyss like a tapestry.

He thought to himself: I can now finally close my eyes in peace.

——I came to the abyss to plant a flower for you to wash away my sins.

I absolutely love a good angsty story. There’s nothing too sad but there’s a bittersweet undertone.
Spoiler

it’s a happy ending tho so don’t cry too much

[collapse]

the story keeps alternating between present and past and it didn’t bother me as much compared to other stories where I felt like the backstory was taking too long.

I was too into the story after reading 6 chapters and I MTLed the rest, I can’t wait for the rest of the translators work so I can reread this again!

An incredible story!

We have a fairly unexpected "Holy Mother" style MC, but he is strong enough to back his kindness. In a lot of novels, this personality style gets a bad rap, but I'll have to say, the author did an amazing job balancing the MC's kindness with his strong sense of justice and the embodiment of what it means for those with great power to use it to protect others instead of for selfish benefits.

I'm also usually not a fan of very weak/terminally ill-type MCs but this MC has... more>> a super quiet inner strength and really shows it in desperate moments. He earns the respect that he's given and fully deserves it!

The main relationship is also beautifully complex. It's not a one-sided torturing or bullying. I also normally don't like stories that rely too heavily on flashbacks, it was definitely one of my main fears when I started reading this one. But the author did an excellent job on the flashbacks, tying it to the present day, and not dragging them on. There was no sense of dissonance between the time shifts and instead, actions were given more meaning.

A beautifully written story about revenge, forgiveness, generosity, fairness, and courageous seeking of the truth.

Translation was pretty good. <<less

So I mtl'ed the entire thing. Honestly, I went into the story really expectant. Idk, I thought the MC would be the fierce fighter type with a huge thing about pride. I like that type of character so I was excited.

But it wasn't happening. MC was not fighting back, he was pretty submissive although somehow still cool and elegant in my eye.

So I thought just like the ML did, that MC must be biding his time and he's only pretending for the sake of letting ML lower his guard.

He wasn't.... more>> BUT, amazingly enough, in the later half of the story I found out that there was reason for MC to act that way, why he was so okay with everything. He wasn't broken, he wasn't depressed. He was a man with a mission to accomplish. But here's the twist, the mission wasn't revenge.

It was to do the right thing, which was much, much more difficult, nearly impossible with literally NOBODY on his side. But unlike most holy mother MCs I've read about, he doesn't go 'oh my, save everybody, love everybody, sacrifice yourself blah blah blah', but somehow he does just that, without the unrealistic goodness included. He's genuinely a good person, but at the same time he's also human and makes mistakes, sometimes learns from then, sometimes it takes a couple more tries.

In my opinion, even though he isn't 'badass' or 'fierce', he has strength of character. He is strong inside out. And he is flawed.

Anyway, so basically I liked the story. <<less

This story had me sobbing through the 40+ chapters I've read so far. Damn, the author really knows how to stretch the angst, and somehow make it into a good story. The alternation between past and present events gives the perfect respite to the dire situation at the moment, and shows how the Demon King so very slowly turns from hate to love. I love that we see the whole process, because in BL the ML is often already in love with the MC, and the MC's love for the... more>> ML is usually not convincing at all sob. But here we witness the most heart-breaking series of events I've ever read, that lead to a very sweet passion. <<less

I'm breathless - this story and translation deserve more attention. I don't know how to describe it - it has the morality of the Bible, the sexiness and angst of Bloodraven, the philosophical musings and poetry of Little Mushroom, the anger and redemption of the Captive Prince, and a charm all of its own. I honestly think anyone who is open to m/m stories would find something magical to love in this book. I guess they have to be ready to cry and have their hearts wrung out, but don't... more>> worry, there is no tragedy tag!

First off, kudos to the translator - the poetry and nuance was captured so beautifully that it really helped keep me immersed in the story. What I read honestly didn't even feel like a translation. I'm sure some things might have gotten lost in the translation but I'll bet the essence was accurately captured. A more half-hearted translation would have caused the story to lose much of its power, and I'm grateful that this translator worked so hard to ensure that wouldn't happen here. I only feel sorry that the hours, days, weeks of time spent on this beautiful translation was consumed by me in less than two days.

Now that I've raved enough, let me explain the big reason why this story stuck to me. In a time of Israel and Gaza, right and left wing politics, and xenophobia towards both foreign countries and immigrants, there are so many relevant lessons in this book, some subtle and some so prominent a toddler couldn't miss it.

There is the obvious, almost biblical theme of doing the right thing - treating everyone equally, acknowledging and trying to right serious wrongs. But while Jesus comes off as pretentious and unrealistic and so divinely inspired in his love that it's impossible to empathize, the MC in this story is very human. His story and struggles seeps through in a way that feels realistic and sincere. He doesn't sacrifice himself and act humble just because he's told by some god he has to do so - everything he does he assesses against his own ethical framework and judgement. He's not acting good to act good, he acts for the survival/betterment of his country and people (who have treated and raised him so well initially) and his own guilt (both for what he's personally done and the complicity with what has happened in the past). All these reasons feel more grounded than someone who is driven to do good and sacrifice himself because his father says so.

Then there's the musings on religion in general. Yes, there are corrupt religious people, and the religion might not be "true", but if a religion helps guides people to act better towards each other, to be brave in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, to live with hope in otherwise hopeless situations, then hasn't it accomplished something good? Some people might be acting hypocritical to what they think, and some are only nice because their religion says they have to be, but if that makes the world more pleasant, does it matter? Some might wonder why a religion is required to accomplish these things - after all, societal pressures can do something similar. But religion can inspire belief and persistence in a way that generic social etiquette and pressures just can't. Of course, this can be for good, but it can also be for bad as we've seen historically and even now. But is that the fault of religion or the fault of some extreme teachings and bad religious leaders? I thought the way the author leads the readers into thinking about this in the story was brilliant and natural.

Finally, there is an Enders Game style examination of war and what it means to be an alien. Why do people fight? Would they still do so if they seriously examined whether they were in the right or whether the other side is just as deserving of life as them? Is there true 'evil' or is it largely a result of the environment and personal circumstances? Are those centuries-long grudges worth all the pain or have they escalated beyond the original intents? Why do people fight rather than admit their wrong or lose some pride?

Another related theme in this story is the importance of history, the importance of having people willing to preserve things or investigate historical events so that we can learn from them, revisit them, analyze them from new perspectives. This author focuses on a wrong that still needs and can be corrected. Some might think this is supportive of the initiatives to push countries for reparations of historical wrongs they've committed, but I would say, that sounds more like trying to perpetuate a grudge. I think there's a difference between learning from history and living in it, but I admit it's a fine line and probably different depending on the side. In this story, there is so much that can't be done if both sides hold onto their hatred. It's like a prisoner's dilemma with both sides getting more battered and embittered with each unsuccessful round. And success can only happen if both sides let go of their grudges and prejudices.

All these philosophical ponderings aside, this story works because of the characters. There are amazingly vivid characters and great world building throughout this story. I love the flashback style the author uses to maintain suspense and keep us from dying from sympathetic pains. I think if I had to read this story chronologically, I'd probably have given up due to the hopelessness. After all I don't believe in their prophecies or religion.

The MC and ML are so perfectly imperfect. The MC is a bit of a white lotus, but he has his own motivation and doesn't ask others to help accomplish or even understand his goodwill. The ML is a driven, stubborn demon who likes to lie to himself until the very end (but somehow still recognizes love before the Mc). They sometimes unknowingly, sometimes obviously keep each other going and shape each other into the person they eventually end up being. They've been each other's largest crossroads, and surprisingly help lift each other to accomplish much more than they could have without the other's influence. They've been the butterfly effect in each other's lives, so it's only right they're also each other's love.

The plot is also quite interesting, though I think the reader will be able to guess some of the plot twists. However, the way the author slots everything together, and the way the characters discover each other's secrets makes it so I don't care that I already know what might happen. It's the journey that counts. I love the extras that just emphasize how each painful moment has helped shape two exceptionally strong individuals. Of course, if the author decided to write another 40 chapters of extras, I would have been even happier; but I guess I have to take what I can get. <<less

Rivers of angst! Seas of dog's blood! Reader's tears drowning phones and computers! Ah! It's wonderful!

Not only a story about two enemies finding their way to love but trying to heal the wounds of two nations separated by arrogance, power, and willfulness that spawned centuries of hatred and suffering.

Between the story of the growing desperation of the MC's pending death and the ML's trying to prevent it, you learn in bits and pieces, how they ended up in that place. The history of the last seven years when the MC... more>> arrived in the Abyss then the seven years before that which were just as important, then the incident that started everything.

The MC is one of those genuinely caring people who wants everyone safe, healthy and happy. He doesn't do moral waffling and wants to help the demons as much as the humans.

The ML is gruff, and cruel at first - given how tough he had to be to survive that makes sense - but he's worn down by the MC's gentleness and active efforts to help the demons.

The story works in large part because the MC is stubborn, smart, and never gives up however much distrust or corruptions he faces. In the end
Spoiler

It's not just the Demon King but all the demons and the human realm who consider him a marvel and a savior. And it's not because he's OOP (he is a bit, but he's a monarch) he's just a really good person.

Why the ratings so low.. It's been a while since I found good story like this.

I really like the MC, he's so selfless and the ML is good too. He regretted everything he did in the past and became a puppy to our MC lol.

Everything is great, the flashbacks, the plot, the Side/characters, the ending.

Too bad that the novel had only less than 100 chapters.

Goodness, wow, no words.

I sometimes cannot bare to read all the extras a book has but somehow I feel that this one needed more. I did not expect myself to like this book so much. I genuinely did not think there would be much to this book especially with how the description is. I’ll be honest, this book had me bawling lol ! I have not cried like that in awhile. The demon king oh my gosh, I know how some books the couples love each other so much it... more>> is undying and strong but the demon king in this really had me thinking, ‘Wow, he loves him.’ Like it’s a statement, he really does it. It amazed me how I was reading and it’s all I could think, all I could see as I read.

Don’t get me started on the MC I’ve shed too much tears for him. I’m so happy he gets to learn how to love and that he himself is loved. It really brought me closure.

Good book, I thank the author for writing this and as well the translator. :) I’m happy I read this and the time I’ve spent doing so, <<less

i thought this book was really good! The structure of the story was really interesting and I rarely see one set up like this. They had long flashbacks to each year in the past along side the present and then gave a backstory to put in context all of the event that happen. I really liked their relationship and the dynamic was so cute! I think that it is one of those rare stories where the enemies to lovers makes sense to me and I actually enjoyed instead of it... more>> feeling forced. <<less

I’m here to give this a rating boost. This novel deserves a much higher rating and I really can’t believe it’s just a 3.9 rating at the moment. I was not expecting much but was hooked after chp 2. Story is slightly angsty. The relationship between MC and ML really draws you in.

Protagonist was a s*ave but he was a willing s*ave. He had a plan and he stubbornly followed through eventhough the success chance for him was low. ML was kinda dumb (lol), took him awhile to figure out... more>> and accepted his feelings. Not going to go through the plot. Give it a try if you like the slight angsty, strong MC, silly ML and redemption type story. <<less

Honestly, I came into this not expecting much but after reading up till chapter 70, I’m starting to wonder why on earth does this novel have such a low rating?? In my opinion, it deserves at least a 4.4! I super love medieval/western themed BLs and this is one I will truly never forget!

MC is such a poor little pookie, he’s so selfless and literally broke my heart so many times due to his sacrifices 😭😭

ML was an as*hole at the start but considering his environment and experiences, I do... more>> understand why he would react in a certain way, torturing the MC and all. Eventually, he does regret tho and that would really make you feel extremely satisfied since well he finally understands what MC has did for him!

Though I cried many times while reading this, this just shows how good the story is!! You should definitely read this!! (And prepare some tissues on the side :’) <<less

It was so heart breaking at times that I wanted to stop reading, but happily I didn't. This was a very beautiful and heart wrenching novel.

MC is so strong and enduring. I grew to love ML as much as MC when I understood their story. I personally would'nt read again because my heart can't take it, even though the ending was happy. This was overall a great read but please be prepared to cry ALOT.

Book made me cry until my eyes were swollen. Not only because of the sad moments or even the romantic moments but also because of the warmth. The ML, the MC, the humans and the demons. the characters were all so human with the capability for great cruelty, cowardice and fear but also retaining a genuine goodness and bravery and camaraderie that came through and made me bawl even more.

characters

MC: Favorite. Do. Gooder. Of. All. Time. I mean... the guy was a tragic figure from the beginning of the book... more>> since he was already weak and dying. Plus it's very clear that he's a good person. Just the way he's introduced, it's like 'TRAGIC HERO' is just stamped across his forehead. And as they showed the flashbacks, it's even more heartrending and he gets more and more lovable. He's a do gooder that's a realist AND he has the ability to actually accomplish what he wants and protect the people he wants to protect.

ML: he's a super interesting mix of someone that's extremely cruel and yet somehow not a bad person. While it's true that he's ruthless, it's actually pretty justified and by the time the book's started, he's already softened up because of the MC to the point that he's half adorkable tsundere and half reformed crematorium style ML. Also one huge plus point about ML is that there is consent from the very start even before he falls for MC. Like don't get me wrong, it's not as if MC wants to sleep with ML but MC does agree to it. And given the context I think it's pretty amazing given that MC is ML's s*ave, the enemy that started all his misfortune and just generally considering the morality and environment the demons have.

everyone else: so complex so flawed so good so human.

Plot

Great plot great execution. The author starts the book near the end with MC close to death and ML obviously already in love with him and then slowly reveals their past while weaving it into their present. Bits and pieces are revealed along the way with little hints laid out along the way that entices the reader that there's still much more to find out. The full picture really only comes out near the end of the novel and at the same time, the MC's sickness is just running along throughout the narrative, constantly maintaining the tension.

romance

Tearing. Bawling. Awwing. <<less

The novel started out good but it starts become draggy at the second half. Reading the novel became much more difficult at that part which is why I have to skim the chapters. I have no issues with the story alternating between the past and the present. It's just that it becomes overly redundant particularly the part where Langmuir is already 'dying' and yet he can still speak a lot and spout a more than 10 000 word narration of their past which is the root of their misunderstanding. He... more>> still had the energy to get angry. That destroyed the heart-wrenching effect that I sought from this novel. It failed to convey the melodrama due to this redundancy that isn't necessary and instead became annoying.

Come on. The author keeps saying Langmuir is dying this and that but he's still more energetic that a bedridden person plagued by unknown disease. Such a disappointment. Plus the narration style in this portion, that crucial past that caused all these misunderstandings, disappointments, and mutual destruction isn't to my taste. I mean, it really got boring and draggy.

The novel isn't that bad but isn't that good either. It is good to pass your time. The attack damage level of the angst is 3/10 but the translation is good.

I don't recommend it but you can always give a try <<less

Not saying it's perfect, but it's good enough to make me wonder whether it was.

Everything in this novel is great! I'd say its only weakness is the side characters (tbh they're better than most BL novel side characters, but the novel focuses on the MC & ML), but that's not super important because the main characters, worldbuilding, romance, writing, and plot are all excellent. I cried so many times because of the angst.

The story isn't linear, but it wasn't confusing for me (maybe just the first chapter, but I got... more>> my bearings pretty easily). The worldbuilding and plot are complex yet explained well. The main character is precious, and the romance between the MC and ML is awesome. Enemies to lovers? More like lovers as enemies lol. They're super sweet. The only toxic bit was when the ML was still in his "we're enemies" phase, but that's to be expected.

Overall, I 10/10 would recommend. The novel isn't that long, but the pacing is great. I feel very satisfied after reading it. <<less

This novel does not deserve such a low rating, it deserves at least a 4.5

A story about two enemies who have hurt each other in the past, fall in love and seek the best for their kingdoms.

The romance between MC and ML is quite painful but it's worth all the suffering, it's very touching.

This was one of my most painful reading experiences..... in the nearly 200 novels I've read. I want to say, really, who hurt you, Author-nim? Why did you decide to take that revenge on us poor readers by making us cry rivers and lakes?

The MC is the most beautiful, courageous, brave, brilliant and pitiful creature on the planet, and you cannot convince me to think otherwise. He deserves to be taken care of like the most precious treasure in the world. Forget how good a person he is, just based... more>> on everything he's done to the two races, he deserves so much more.

The number of times my heart hurt while reading about him being tortured no matter what side he was on.

Spoiler

It's a happy ending.

If it wasn't, the author must have needed to pay medical expenses for my heart being shattered to pieces.

[collapse]

While I understand the ML's actions and his immense guilt, I still cannot get myself to forgive him completely, for those years of torture that the MC lived through. I don't hate ML, in fact I quite like him....... but really, just thinking about MC.... I can't not hate him a bit.

This is the one novel, where you wish it was a rebirth, but it's really not. Honestly, if MC was reborn, I really don't see him doing things differently. He meticulously crafted his plan for 7 years, and I personally, cannot think of a better way to solve the difficult problem he decided to take up. Of course, it'd be a completely different story, had it been the ML who reincarnated.

Anyway, a very good read, just for the unique way the story was told.

It was cool story, let's be clear, they kinda liked each other since they met. Pity it took them foreverrrr to find out. Well I am not a fan of the jumping timeline, I personally prefer linear. As for the epilogue, ufff they switched back, I felt like demon king was too hyped for his own good and it wouldn't go too smoothly had he stayed back....I also wanted to see his old self suffer under his spouse lolol that side would've been def. more fun to watch lol

Also sorry,... more>> I have to wonder.... they have like other reproductive organs right? Like whenever it was "merging" they always mention the tail - they mean the normal tail right ? but eeeh I became confused about the visuals kinda😅 <<less
