Xu Chang An, in this life, he could only watch the little man (villain) who had harmed his mother and was being depressed living in the small village. However, he did not expect to suddenly be given a wedding decree from the emperor to make him become the wife (Wangfei) of the first prince, Xiao Qing Yan.

He knew in his heart that this matter was his salvation but to Xiao Qingyan, who has a great prospect, this was a disaster. After the great wedding, he took advantage of his new status to avenge his mother and himself. Xu Chang An was aware of the emperor’s intention that time when he was sanctioned a marriage, he all along tried his utmost to support Xiao Qingyan. Until by a lucky coincidence that the imperial government rewarded him, who’d performed great merit. The emperor promised to fulfill his wish, Xu Chang An without hesitation knelt down to request imperial decree to accomplish Xiao Qing Yan’s greatest wish.

“Your servant have no other request, please Your Majesty to bestow decree to allow your servant leave His Highness peacefully. Thank Your Majesty’s benevolence. Long live the emperor, long live for thousand of years.”

Ehhh. This novel ended up being kind of a letdown for me. The development between the MC and the ML started out sweet but there was a really annoying subplot that took up most of the novel. Basically ... more>>
Spoiler

someone sends a spy to seduce ML and he wants to find out who sent her. He decides that the best way to do this is to act like he's in love with her and like he doesn't like MC. He also doesn't tell MC that that's what he's doing until much later on, so MC (very reasonably!) thinks that ML doesn't like him. It would be tolerable if this only went on for a few chapters, but it started in chapter 32 and now I'm at chapter 58 and it's still going on. At this point I feel like no matter how it ends it's not going to be worth the wait.

2.5 at best.

The story is really short but for some reason it stretched to ch80 with lots of unnecessary details. The Synopsis hooked me but it wasn't really what was expected. The story was bland and everything was already I've read somewhere except most details are glossed over. For example, the other villain who was named at the end, there were no explanation at all as to why he did that? Oh well.

A good read to pass the time.

There's nothing in particular that I hate, but also nothing significant for me to remember.

Okay, how should I start? The novel is great. I would have rated this 4 stars but considering I rated another novel that's kind of the same level (not same plot) as this one a 3 star, it wouldn't make any sense. So 3 stars it is.

I'm starting with one complaint that isn't important to the story. ... more>>
Spoiler

There are four characters with a given name similar to "Yu". Which is Yu, Yun, Yue, and Yan. In the beginning, I got confused as all hell, especially since 3 of those are Xiao Qing Yan, Xiao Qing Yue, and Xiao Qing Yu (thankfully Qing Yun was barely used). I'm sure in the original Chinese version would have been easier to read since it's written in different Chinese characters.

[collapse]
But moving on...

Reading the tag of 'Clever Protagonist'. I don't think that's the case.
Spoiler

He was barely the one who's taking revenge for his mother. He pretty much depended on ML and the Emperor for it.

[collapse]
And I do appreciate that MC rarely gets jealous, I can see why that make some sense. As... he and ML did get forcibly married to each other.

Spoiler

The MC is passive halfway in. It irritated whenever the ML 'punishes' MC for Nanhoe (Nan Xi). I am fully aware that he was acting... but honestly? He went too far. He and MC could have just... I don't know.. ACTED??? LIKE IT WAS WHAT HAPPENED? FOR REAL DUDE. Since the ML and MC are the masters of the house, they should have full control of the servants. So even if they (servants) doubt that ML was punishing MC, either MC or ML could just threaten them to believe it. they have power over them do they not? Plus, they could have just used their power to tell the servants to spread some lie to make Nanhoe believe that she was favored. So Nanhoe's 'loyal' maid wouldn't have been a pain in the ass.

[collapse]

Speaking of that.

Spoiler

That Nanhoe subject was dragged out, although I can see that it was a device for the MC and ML to bond and realize their feelings. I'm not talking about the 'punish' part. Nanhoe subject could have ended a lot sooner. Could just be me talking since... I really, really hate her.

[collapse]

AND

Spoiler

I'm just gonna call it the Nanhoe arc... readers do get some fluffy moments between the couple in it. I think the readers should have gotten more chapters dedicated to 'wonderful, beautiful' scenes between them (but I guess the extra could made up for it?)

[collapse]

One final thing.

Spoiler

I was looking forward to the divorce line... But it was honestly very disappointing. I wanted some angst for the ML bro. And the moment that MC realized his feelings? It felt very out of place.

[collapse]

Even with those, I still recommend reading it... since it's just 80 chapters. Especially if you're a patient person. I wouldn't say it's a light read because the chapters are decently long (?). In the least, it took me 10 mins to read each one. The ending and extra were pretty cute. And I can't believe the author put some detailed stuff (not disgusting ones) about the pregnancy... <<less

Idk if the people who gave this 5 stars truly even read a good book. And it’s not even about the ‘Naive Uke’. The plot is just horrendous.A prince without a backbone who goes on ‘acting’ indifferent to the uke and loving towards the concubines Cus he feels they are a threat. It felt like the seme was a child who had no clue what he was doing, neither is there any sort of logic in this story. ‘Seme falls in love with uke but they can’t be together cus... more>> oh he has to put on a play’;extreme soapdrama and wattpad vibes right there. ... It's a very "meh" story. There's an interesting idea in it but even though things are happening, it still feels like nothing happens most of the time. The translation could use some work, but it's still pretty understandable.

I didn't feel much emotional charge from this. The characters have an air of blandness about them throughout. The MC is okay. The ML is okay. I really don't care about them. I liked the princess on priciple, not that she was best written or anything. I liked the emperor for being... more>> different from most other emperors in novels.

Mpreg is a tag so it isn't much of a spoiler that they had a child... but I don't think there was a need for a child at all.
Spoiler

The author had been planning for the baby for a long time so it's not an unexplicable magic baby either, kind of. But I really think the baby was not necessary at all. It is just there so the ML could get the throne without opposition and get to keep the guy too. I'm all for happy endings, happy the emperor could get his way too after going through all the trouble of paving the way for his son, but one of the other princes could have just gotten the throne for once.

[collapse]

And can I speak about the villains with no presence that ended up villains because the MC didn't like them?
Spoiler

Not really how it happens but it really feels like it in two cases.

  • First is QinXin. She is one of the two concubines (cefei) of the ML brought by the palace a bit after his marriage with MC. ML never slept with them or had any interest in them. The woman was at worst a wishy washy person who went this and that way trying not to step on anyone's foot and trying to please all, deriving joy from other's troubles sometimes; she was a woman who the MC thought of as too hard to deal with and/or scheming because of his experience with his father's concubines. Her ending? Who knows. She disappeared from the household supposedly. The prince drives her out and her fate is anybody's guess. Whether she went back to her family or decided to live on her own, ML and MC didn't really care.
  • The second one is ML's fully blood-related brother, QingYu. The MC didn't like him becuase he held some unexplicable enmity towards MC since the beginning. I honestly thought it was just a matter of time and that the reason QingYu hated MC was because he basically brcame an obstacle to his brother's possibility to ascend as an emperor. Of course not. He was later made into an actual villain behind the scenes, not quite QinXin's level of just-there-to-exist, but it was a conclusion that left a bitter taste and I didn't care for it. I was expecting the familial relationships to actually be good ones so maybe it's on me for getting disappointed on my own. Still when thinking about the magic baby, there was another bitter taste added, becuase I really felt the author could have followed that initial thrown line somewhere in the beginning where the ML says they'll just adopt from his blood-related brother if it comes to it.
    [collapse]
Another thing I was expecting that didn't happen: the MC getting an official position, getting to work on court and stuff. The reason I was expecting this to happen was because the story really liked mentioning how MC was a man in the beginning for some reason, so I thought maybe it was planning to follow the synopsis and they'd divorce and continue their "careers" and maybe remarry later. It's not that sort of story though so wrong expectations really.

My overall enjoyment was minimal, but don't let that stop you from giving it a try. Tastes differ and all that. <<less

At the beginning it was alright, but god was I wrong when I thought it would be good! I'm half way through and I hate every character expect the princess.

First of all, The main character is just soooo numb, he got literally no character, he doesn't express that he's angry or jealous and just accepts everything and they both don't communicate. He's soo boring.

Second of all, the main lead, bruh this motherf*cker.... he real says I should treat wangfei rightly, then proceeds to go with some bit*h he ran into... more>> begging for money. The audacity he has, if I was wangfei id have told him all my complaints. and when he f*cking shouts at MC for literally nothing without even listening to his side of the story. He's soooo confusing.

Third of all, that b*tch...... the nanxi bit*h could go stab herself and I wouldn't care, id literally help her stab herself. I hope she dies in a ditch.

Overall, everyone is described as clever and intelligent but id beg to differ, they're all brainless pieces of shit! I don't recommend this to someone with low patients and low tolerance and anger issues. <<less

The novel is Unexpected! Different from my expectations.

Why? MC barely doing anything for his revenge. He didn't scheming or anything. Sure he has the intention, and when he has the chance, he took it! But that's it! Everything goes great was because the ML!

Like seriously, ML's role in this fic was the most important! He's the one who holding the plot! He's the Writer, Player, and Schemer! ML is the Greatest Actor! ML is so great but also because he's that good at his acting, I was so worried I... more>> had thought of the worst scenario ever and almost want to strangle him if he somehow really an ass!

ML is really good! He's not saint nor bad. But he's good at what he do. He would support his brothers if they're the one who would become the Emperor. But he has no problem being harsh when he was angry.

ML might be not the gentlemen toward MC at the beginning, but ML never hurt MC physically nor emotionally. And when ML fall for MC? He's of course being Loving!

ML doesn't hide his secret plan to MC which is Great! He tested him at the beginning and then he's happy with the result. Then he trusted him fully! MC also has no problem follow ML's plan.

MC is not useless or anything. I don't know how to say it, but I like this kind of MC with his flaws and all. I honestly feel so refreshing reading this kind of rare MC. Being helpful as he can, but his role isn't anything so big. Remind me of the MC in The Reader and Protagonist have to be in True Love. He's no one big or small, he's as useful as he can be. And very Supportive toward ML.

I'm pleasantly suprised by this Novel! I Enjoyed it and Loving it Greatly! ❤️ <<less

Let's face it: I saw the "mpreg" tag & was suspicious. This wasn't an ABO or ger setting so to say I was extremely skeptical is not an understatement. Rest assured, there was a bun!

I liked it in spite of its cons. The translation was pretty rocky in the beginning & it slowly improved over time, but for those who are nitpicks, it may be a rough ride. I appreciate the effort poured into it tho; historical settings are a menace to translate. The plot wasn't anything complex or dramatic.... more>> Romance was slow-burn, but MY GOD I only became sure of ML's feelings after reaching the halfway point of the novel. The man was playing mind-games & I felt as punk'd as MC did. I was iffy with his personality in the beginning, but he was pretty much a gentleman for the majority of the story. Maybe some see MC as too much of a pushover, but the guy's been mistreated for most of his life, so it's no wonder he's more docile.

TL;DR not a bad quick read if you enjoy historical settings. Mpreg tag was a nice bonus & angst was kept to a minimum <<less

This novel is a sweet and warm one. Don't really have a big and twisted plot on it, but the story is enjoyable for me from the first chapter till the end.

The story is about a young man who was bully by his own family and get a change to change his life with a decreed from the emperor.

ChangAn is more like a naive and text books smart person. He did revenge on his family, but not all his family's misfortune was because of him. In my opinion, the author... more>> more like to keep him to be a good person.

Just enjoy this book as light read. <<less

Bland, very "small shakes in the water" type of story.

The story feels like a very long run-on sentence. Time to time I would have to re-read a paragraph again, as they quickly pass details and information about what is going on.
(probably the translation, but they tried their best)

overall pretty ok, this is more of a one-time read type of novel in my opinion.

also the names my god I got confused so many times as their to similar to each other.

As dramatic the sypnosis is, the actual outcome is..... flat.

All the political entanglements and deep foreshadowing turned out to be...... simple.

The precieved complexities of the characters and relationships is...... more straightforward than initially implied

The MC is not as impressive as the title or summary suggests. This is more or less a story of how the MC deals with the consequences of being a Wangfei and the dramatic changes in his lifestyle. The ML here is more mild than the ML in The Wife is First despite his initial grudges, so... more>> the MC's life is rather comfortable. His more impressive moments in the story is how he asserts his authority as Wangfei in the face of those who look down on his humble origins while making sure to avoid overstepping his boundaries. Too many cannon fodders gets too full of themselves while the MC knows when to step on the breaks.

Spoiler
  • He has no sense of ambition since his marriage stripped him of his chance to take the imperial exams just like The Wife is First.
  • Just like The Wife is First, the MC has to deal with a lot of women, including the ML's harem. The MC's situation never gets too terrible because the imperial family treats him well. The MC's life in the harem gives us insight to how pitiful the life of concubines are and how much their livelihoods depends on favoritism
  • As Wangfei, he gets compromised by the schemes centering around the political tensions over the throne inheritance. He himself does not do anything really impressive in regards to politics. The emperor backs the MC, but he has his own political agenda. The emperor has a scheme behind the arrangement with the MC and ML's marriage.
    [collapse]
The ending is too idealistic. It contradicts the dark undertones that's been heavily emphasized throughout the novel in regards to familial bonds, which is something that the MC spends the entire novel coming to terms with

There are some positives to this story, but I think my disappointment over the unfulfilled high expectations the synopsis imposed dampened the positives. Keep your expectations low and you may find this to be an enjoyable and slow pace read.

Spoiler
    • The ML's sister: She's probably the only likable female character in the novel and she's bad*ss too! She has a more impressive presence than the so called "rich and powerful" MC and she's really good with playing with politics and turning the situation around. Even the ML is surprised at how omniscient she is.
    • The slow relationship development between the MC and ML. The slow pace of their relationship is sensible considering the fact that their marriage was arranged against their will.
    • The bond between the MC and his personal servants. The servants are the MC's closest friends and they helped him through the hardest times of his life. The cruel irony that the MC deals with is that they care more about him than his own family. I love that the MC repaid them by ensuring that they had a good future and retirement
