Hey, this is the translator speaking, to talk about my favorite parts of this novel. I don't usually write reviews, so please bear with me.
This is a story about an author who was accidentally thrown into a crowd of protagonists and tries his best to survive among them despite not having a golden finger. Three years after his arrival, he meets a 'protagonist' who is somewhat different from the other protagonists he's met, grudgingly goes along with him for the sake of returning to his world, and falls in love with him along the way.
I think the highlight of this novel is most definitely the relationship between the two main characters, particularly because of the ML (and his system). Ever wondered what would happen if a capture target knew the system's existence and that he was being captured? This is the story. Also, Ye Mingjun is such an oblivious sweet-talker I wouldn't be surprised if honey was slathered all over his body at the moment of his creation. Some people wonder why the MC fell so quickly for him, but this is the reason. At the start of the story, the ML is curious about love and picks the MC as his capture target after mistaking his 'interest' in him as something more (it's actually just an attempt at probing out a likely enemy). As he regards himself as being straight, as well as other reasons due to the ML being a part of something that hurt the MC in the past, MC tries (and fails) to push him away, and the ML sticks on because of his growing curiosity of the MC. This then develops into a pretty interesting relationship of getting to know each other via completing System missions. I love how the System goes about with the missions, which goes through all the basics of knowing each other as a person rather than delving straight into the romance (also, the System's punishments are hilarious. Stare apologetically at your capture target? Write a letter begging for forgiveness? Comb his hair? Wash his clothes? It gets increasingly better as their relationship progresses)
Then there's the father-son relationships between the authors and their characters. This is probably the major source of conflict in this particular novel, which I think is the absolute nightmare/horror story for authors - what would you do if you woke up to find a character you wrote has been brought to life? Especially when this protagonist is horrifically OP and you tortured him for his tragic backstory. This is what happens between the MC and his protagonist, and I cried many times leading up to their resolution.
More questions are raised towards the end such as - is it truly the author's fault when he didn't know you existed? Who was the one to summon all these protagonists, and cause them to suffer when they should have thrived in their own worlds? The plot develops more as the mastermind behind all of this is revealed. Contrasted with the MC's experience is probably the story of another protagonist and his author (who abandoned his novel) and the numerous other protagonists who were summoned to this world (Ye Junhou's story was a tearjerker even though he's a massive womanizer).
Also, this might sound weird, but I love the author's writing style? It's pretty clear the author isn't a newbie, and they weave comedy and sadness so masterfully I find myself laughing in one scene, then crying in the next.
