The Princess’ Shadow Guard Cannot Be Too Clever

When Ming Qin, who was a shadow guard, climbed the County Princess’s boudoir, she expected to be thrown out. But the County Princess just looked on calmly, as if there was nothing in this world worth caring about.

She thought that the County Princess was both beautiful and powerful and worthy of sacrificing her life for. So when she was appointed as the County Princess’s guard and was told by her senior sister to ‘be nice’, Ming Qin managed to ‘nicely’ sacrifice herself. It is only when her senior sister grabs Ming Qin by the ear and scolds her for being a s*upid idiot that Ming Qin realises that she has to be ‘nice’ because the County Princess likes her.

Ming Qin went to the Boudoir and apologised to the County Princess, “I’m sorry I didn’t quite understand before.” Finding herself desperately longing to use the rouge on the County Princess’s lips, she added, “But I seem to understand it better now.”

—–

The once peerless beauty Murong Yan was imprisoned in a tower with her crippled body in tow, like a canary that couldn’t fly out of its cage. Therefore when she saw a foolish shadow guard inexplicably appear, she only took advantage of the situation to pass the time.

When the reckless shadow guard brought warmth into her heart that resembled eternal winter, she no longer thought there would be a reason to regain her former glory, nor a reason to take revenge, and because of a little shadow guard, it felt like anything was possible.

So when the person she had lost had returned to her, Murong Yan did everything to keep her, kissing the person in her arms frantically and whimpering, “Use me, as long as you don’t leave again.”

This story isn’t finished translating yet, but I already found a bunch I liked about it: the characters and just the way they interact.

Something about it hit hard. Like there is a tag for Yandere, but I feel it oversimplified the Princess’s character as she ... more>>

This story really makes you feel for its characters in a way that stories I enjoy seem to do. <<less

Still early to determine if the author can maintain current quality but I would say definitely one of the better ones on this site so far. The information given is a decent amount allowing for the reader to begin to understand the background and the setting of the characters and the novel as a whole. The way it is given is also very naturally; not through infodumps or expositions but discussions between characters and events happening within the novel. Within the interactions you can start to understand the relationships between... more>> the characters and see the development of the main one.

Update as of Ch. 47. Still a 5. I would say wait until it is fully translated because there are sections (like right now) where it is really impactful but because it ends at the chapter it feels like there is a disconnect. That being said, if you are an emotional person, that may be better for you. <<less

This was so cute and lovely. I’m gonna cry. Yandare makes it only better.

but honestly I can totally recommend. It’s well written. Characters are interesting and really lively. Background scenery maybe ain’t much but it’s totally ok bc it’s not necessary with this novel.

Really hart warming pice of literature

By the time the story ended, I thought I'd give it the rating 3.5, rounded up to 4. The premise was great and I really enjoy the author's thoughtful explanation on the psychology of the characters, but the actual execution left something to be desired.

Towards the end, the story felt like it was dragged on just for the sake of drama and possibly so that the readers feel like the characters had "earned" their relationship. Unfortunately, it just felt annoying and the latter part of the story could've been resolved... more>> earlier.

Spoiler

It feels like Ming Qin really acted out of character when she didn't find Murong Yan after she recovered from her injuries from the fight with Xiao He. The justification that she had completed her mission and therefore not needing to find the princess anymore was ridiculous considering this is also the same person who, against all her training and instinct, disobeyed her master to sneak into Murong Yan's glorified prison just to take care of her, even if she couldn't talk to her. If only Ming Qin had found the princess once her injury healed and the country stabilised after the new emperor ascended the throne, the whole incident with the former crown prince could've been easily avoided and Murong Yan would not have been poisoned by him, leading to the subsequent events. Un. Necessary. Drama.

There are also some possible dub-con moments in the story as the author leaned a little too heavily on Ming Qin's almost childlike innocence characteristics, making the earlier intimate moments between the two feels like the princess was taking advantage of Ming Qin. It could be justified that the narrative during the moments were unreliable as it was from Murong Yan's perspective - she wouldn't know if Ming Qin understood what was going on but it still might be an uncomfortable read for a few moments.

All in all, the build up of the story was good but by the time the main story ended, I breathed a sigh of relief because it had gotten almost painful to finish reading.

But then, the best part of the story begins: the side-story of senior sister Song Shuqing

and her wife!

Reading this side story was a breath of fresh air I desperately needed, bumping my rating for the story.

Slight spoiler below for the side-story to end my review:

Spoiler

What I enjoy about their story is how mature both characters are and how they both understand what they both want, completely different from how oblivious Ming Qin was in her relationship with the princess (which could be borderline frustrating, frankly). Shuqing and her partner were respectful and thoughtful about each other's boundaries and I love how the author, unlike the usual Chinese Yuri authors had emphasised on the love interest's status and the reality of who she was and what she had to do to survive. Shuqing with her 21st century sensibility was the perfect match for her love interest and I'm so, so glad of how cognizant they both were of their own feelings because I would cry if there is another Ming Qin in the story. Definitely worth it to stick around just for their story, in my opinion.

I've looked at the reviews on this novel and many others seem to like it, but it wasn't my cup of tea for a majority of the novel... here's why:

The premise of this novel is great! I loved it. Ming Qin, strongest woman in the Shadow Guards, scales a tower to hide and run away from being hunted down and killed. Murong Yan is occupying this tower and is doing so as a prisoner of her mentally ill emperor brother who is so obsessed with her that it's terrifying. Even... more>> though Murong Yan is an unapproachable woman and very self-guarded of herself, Ming Qin still comes back to see her. At first, to repay her back for helping her hide, but then it develops into Ming Qin wanting a friendship with the gorgeous princess locked up alone. After various events and fighting in the political field, Ming Qin escapes with Murong Yan and saves her.

This whole plot is great. It leaves for a lot of angst and growth if done correctly. And the angst and growth were done correctly! However, there are some things that can be noted that I didn't like about this novel.

Murong Yan is disabled due to jumping in to protect her father, Prince Yu. I love a strong disabled character, especially a woman, but her disability is sometimes romanticized. It's nothing too bad but enough to make me roll my eyes. For instance, phantom pain is brought up and happens a few times, and Ming Qin is the only one who can make Murong Yan suddenly not feel this pain. I'm personally not a fan of those.

Another is the politics in the novel. There's even an author's note about it. There was no focus or build of the structure. The author states in a note that she was throwing stuff together on the spot. However, there is enough to create a story that makes sense, but there are some bits and pieces that might make you raise an eyebrow.

The biggest thing is that Ming Qin's behavior is quite child-like. She's pretty dumb. Her fighting skills and strategy are on par with no one; she's quite literally the best Shadow Guard in the entire Shadow Guard Camp, however, her regular day-to-day thinking is a brick wall.

But hey, if you are looking for a toxic wlw with disabled woman rep, fighting and death, angst, and some spice, this novel might be for you, especially if you truly don't gaf about politics. Murong Yan is a very controlling woman who wants Ming Qin all to herself, and Ming Qin is a strong and killing machine who would do anything to keep Murong Yan safe. These are the first 70 chapters of the novel.

However! The next 20 chapters of the novel switches to the side ship of the novel featuring Song Shu Qing, Ming Qin's senior sister in the Shadow Guard Camp that she grew up with. I won't spoil who her lover is (all I will say is that Song Shu Qing and her lover are wlw), but I enjoyed these 20 chapters quite a bit.

The last 10 go back and forth between Ming Qin/Murong Yan, Song Shu Qing/her beloved, and Cao Yun, Ming Qin's senior brother who her and Song Shu Qing grew up with as well/his s/o (I won't spoil). There's even a chapter from Tiger's POV, a tiger that Ming Qin found when it was a baby and gifted to Murong Yan as a pet. These last 30 chapters of the novel are quite cute and soft as it takes place after the main story and shows their life after they all retire from being Shadow Guards.

Do I recommend? It's hard to say. I wouldn't recommend this to someone looking for a seriously good novel, but it wasn't like it was absolutely horrible or anything. It's just that it wasn't spectacular. If you don't look closely at the details, this novel was pretty good. However, the translation wasn't that great, so it leaves for a slightly difficult read there.

My favorite addition in the novel has to deal with Song Shu Qing:
Spoiler

Song Shu Qing is from the 21st century, having woken up in her body when she was younger but also having woken up in an entirely different time. So, she, throughout the novel, gives these clear signs that she is your typical lazy millennial woman who doesn't really want to work too hard or anything. It's a neat and touch that can be really funny because a lot of the time she's saying stuff that makes no sense to people of that time. And when you hit the 20 chapters about her and her beloved, you can hear her inner monologue as well with it. She's quite funny

It's soooooo good!!!!

I'm squealing one moment, then bawl my eyes out the next ;v;

Our protagonist, Ming Qin, is a bit dense, but she is the ball of sunshine (too precious, must be protected) who can penetrate the darkest cloud that is our FLM, Murong Yan.

... more>> The way she so earnestly befriends and thus save FML from loneliness makes me want to cry. She might be a Night Guard, but for FML, Ming Qin was the knight in shiny armor.

And out FML*chef kiss <3* Oh yes, she's a yandere, but ngl? If I was in her shoes, I would be obsessed over Ming Qin too. How could you not want to tie this cinnamon bun deadly puppy to yourself?

The way she will ride or die for Ming Qin and how she treasures her soooo much had my bawling my eyes out. <<less

This novel is amazing. It has the right mix of angst and fluff (and a little bit of spice, if you know what I mean *wink* *wink*) that makes you go through a roller coaster of feelings. I was hooked from the first chapter to the last.

The ending might have dragged on a little bit but it's still satisfying. And the bonus chapters are a nice treat and full of sugar.

So, don't hesitate to read this novel. You won't regret it.
