A nameless mercenary who died on the battlefield opens his eyes and finds himself wrapped in light brown fur!!

“Wa, wafi? Kuuaoon!?” Wh-what? I can’t speak!?

Reincarnated as a “Kobold”, a humanoid, dog-type beast, he challenges this absurdity head-on and leads the weakest dog race with a 10-year life expectancy, to climb the ladder of evolution, one day at a time!!

And, as he aims to grow from the weakest to the strongest, there is also a chance for him to evolve and turn into a werewolf, or stay as a Kobold and do as he pleases, but he will stay fluffy for now.

Made an account to review this because I believe it's severly underrated. (3.5 as of writing.)

Unlike a lot of monster protagonist novels, I'd say this one's a lot less angsty. Protagonist doesn't make a harem of monster/human girls that are crazy about him for some s*upid reason, and he doesn't plot to take over the world.

I believe that in order to enjoy this novel, you should throw away expectations of this being one of those monster evolution novels where the story's focused on the protagonist killing everything and the... more>> system giving out a bunch of cool sounding evolution paths every other chapter. The evolution system is a lot more subtle in this story. The protag, while strong, isn't overpowered enough to destroy an army alone with a wave of his hand. He relies on his buddies (not a harem army), to fight his battles alongside him as they each evolve to have different strengths. Protagonist is NOT reincarnated from Earth, so don't expect him to develop stuff like steam engines, vehicles, firearms, etc.

I'm greatly enjoying the story and how it's progressing, and I'm looking forward to where it's headed. Also, translation quality is excellent! Don't miss out on this gem.

Spoiler

I also particularly like that MC and friends aren't evolving into pretty boys/girls with dog ears and a tail and instead are evolving into more badass versions of kobolds.

Human reincarnates into kobold. Early development part is decent. Eventually, as shown from the cover, a mage girl gets introduced. A little before around this time, the story gets a little more boring to me because the character's involvement the group feels a bit forced.

For example, ... more>>
Spoiler

MC reveals to her where the kobold village is. If you've read anything with betrayal in it, you'd realize this is a big nono--especially since our MC is a monster. Although she's indebted because he saves her from a monster, it just seems like such a lack of good judgement.

I'm not sure where the story is planning to go from here. Furry route seems like the next natural step... but I don't know I'll keep reading for now. <<less

As noted by another user, the MC isn't particularly smart or wise. This novel feels like a long script, and not an ingenuous one at that.

Despite having read 16chapters, I'd be hard put to say anything interesting about this story. It's not a page turner, it's bland. It's not bad, simply boring.

I really like non-human reincarnation stories. I tend to get really excited about seeing where the characters evolutions will take them and while this story definitely does that it suffers badly from telling and not showing. Most of the story reads like an overview with only key events actually being written like a story. With also having short chapters the pacing feels all over the place making the chapters feel kind of empty so it's easy to lose interest in what's actually happening. There is also several times where important... more>> information is added on as a side note, for example:

Spoiler

The author doesn't mention the main character training with magic everyday until he uses a spell that is several times stronger than when he used it several chapters prior.

Hopefully as the story grows the pacing will even out and the readers can get invested in the characters but with the current amount of chapters out I would highly recommend waiting awhile before picking this one up. <<less

This series is definitely still in it's early stages so at the moment I only have a few things to say about it (ended up having more to say than I thought so TLDR at the end). The first thing that stood out to me (and the most important considering the early stage the story is still at) is that the translations are EXCELLENT. You could tell me that this was originally written in English by an experienced writer and I would probably believe you. Furthermore a quick glance shows... more>> that this is being updated frequently and consistently.

Now as for the story itself, starts out as a basic reincarnation plot with the MC reincarnating into a kobold but it is still too early to say where exactly this is going. An important point to note is that he is reincarnating in the same world he lived his first life in. He is definitely NOT a Japanese person and so far there has been no signs of the stereotypical bragging about Japan you see in Isekai novels (no obsessions over rice, bathing or the whole re-creating Japan thing you often see in these sorts of stories- the MC has adapted rather well to kobold culture so far). That said there are still a couple non-intrusive references to Japanese culture, with a crow monster that appeared in a single scene being called Yatagarasu, the mention of soybeans in passing and the appearance of a goat like animal native to Japan that I had not heard of before I read this.

So far they have not made the MC totally and ridiculously overpowered with most battles being won more because he and his supporting cast fight smart rather than because he is totally unrivaled. Furthermore, the fights haven't been flawless victories either as there have been a few honestly rather brutal scenes. That said the MC IS growing very quickly. We will have to wait and see if they manage to strike the right balance or not going forward.

Overall I have found it to be a rather enjoyable read so far and would definitely recommend you to read this series. The only complaint I have about this currently is that the supporting cast has fallen somewhat flat. While they are definitely not just the usual cheer squad there to show how awesome the MC is, rather the opposite in fact with each of them having their own specialization with things they are better at than him, they do fall flat in the lack of characterization. I know them by name but there hasn't been much focus on showing their thoughts or personalities (with a couple exceptions for passing side characters that definitely feel like they will return later and that were done pretty well), so I can't really say I KNOW them. That said there is still plenty of room for growth and if they get the same treatment as those characters I mentioned, I will gladly update my review to be 5 stars.

TLDR: Translations are impeccable, still too early in the story to say where it is going to go and the characters fall a little flat but there is plenty of room for growth (and evidence the author can create that growth) and it could easily become worthy of a 5 star review in time. <<less

Reincarnated as a monster and evolution is great, and it was cool for a while with survival and development stuff. However I don't really appreciate how things can only move forward now if there's some political/social issues in some kingdom that the MC has to go solve. Really annoying, and there's whole sections where you're forced to think about basically real world issues like religion and rights and racism. At this point I'm skipping through some chapters because they're so boring. I'm here to see the dog man evolve and... more>> build up his tribe, dammit! <<less

This novel was fun and reasonably entertaining for the first several arcs. I wished that we had gotten more of an exploration of the character dynamics among the kobold pack, maybe some romantic drama among the side characters, but it's whatever, watching them acquire new powers was cool.

Unfortunately, the arc set in the elf kingdom was maybe the clumsiest and most insensitive handling of fantasy racism that I've seen. "Oh, social equality is bad actually, it's totally cool to disenfranchise more than half of your population, and if they have... more>> protests because you denied them the right to vote then it proves that social change has to be gradual (read: has to not happen) so as not to upset the rich and powerful. Also paid protestors violent extremism yadda yadda." Just total reactionary schlock, really disappointing.

One star for dogs**t politics. <<less

This is a cute series where the MC reincarnates as a kobold and evolves alongside his pack mates. There is some adventure and action. However, there is no imagery to boost up the adventure or make any parts of the world particularly memorable. The action scenes may have been good in Japanese, but the translations make them weak and confusing. The scenes are relatively fast-paced, so they don't drag on for too long.

All of the characters are relatively flat, including the protagonist. Sure, he has a background, but he doesn't... more>> have much emotional depth at all. There isn't much in the way of developing relationships with other characters either--antagonist, friendly, or otherwise.

One of the biggest problems this series suffers from would be the translation quality. It looks like machine translations with editing to make it a little less clunky. There are plenty of times where it feels like key sentences are missing or details are left out. Lightning is mistranslated as thunder (thunder is sound, not electricity). The most awkward arc so far translates light and dark elves as white and black elves, making an incredibly uncomfortable connection with racism IRL. This is a fun series, so why did the translator decide to translate these terms in such an unsavorable manner? Was that really necessary?

If you really like monsters as protagonists, then you may have fun reading this light series. If you do not, then it really doesn't have much to offer. <<less

Not the harem you think it is. A realistic reincarnation without typical isekai modern knowledge stuff. MC is OP in the beginning when they use literal rocks but after that there's a lot of struggle and survival. Don't be mislead by the title image, its heavy stuff in the beginning. Most of the people who rate low haven't passed that far into the series.

Not too bad but I didn't enjoy it that much as the chapters went on. I recommend trying it to see if you enjoy it instead of deciding solely based on reviews and rating, everyone has different taste after all.

The story is great. Not to the point of kumo, nani desuga or reincarnated as a slime but still decent. It has slice of life aspects but not to much so I dont feel sick when reading throughout the story. The MC isnt smart but he isnt dumb either, tbh I think he is loveable. Side characters arent very deep but they still have their cute style. The story doesnt have s*upid unreasonable mob villains or heroic justice pursue maniac MC so that a plus for me. In conclusion pretty... more>> chill enjoyable novel. Not the typical japanese novel. <<less
