The Failed Swordsman Who Became the Strongest After Spamming the 100 Million Years Button

There was a mysterious old man who approached the failed swordsman with the “100 million years button”. A magic button which can achieve the same effect as training for 100 million years if you push it.

The failed swordsman who pushed the button had his doubts, but immediately felt tremendous power rising in his body. So he pushed the button many times.

However it was a cursed button. The moment it was pushed, he was confined to the 100 million years prison of time. The first 100 years were devoted solely to training. After 1000 years he had forgotten why he swung his sword. He stopped thinking completely after 10,000 years had passed. After 100 million years he became crippled and finally managed to return to the real world. At the same time losing all his memories from the past 100 million years, the only thing that remained were his sword techniques. “I can become stronger just by pressing the button!” or so he thought and pushed the button many times after that. Foolishly trapping himself in that 100 million years of hell each time.

As he continued this loop, he began to think “If I destroy this world, will I get out of here?” A few billion years later, he finally escaped from the loop.

This is the story of a failed swordsman trying to make a name for himself in the world.

He barely wins with kids in swordmanship. What happened to his grand swordmanship training of a billion years? He can split the world apart. And yet he is so weak that he wins against mere kids with much effforts. Everything is about swordmanship? Wtf the world is full of magic but nobody seems to mention the magic thing. The title of becoming the strongest is wrong.

Interesting premise for making an MC who is OP and it making some kind of sense but the Author "half-asses" by seemingly nerfing the MC and always making him just as powerful as he needs to be for the plot. Other reviewers already explained the Tournament where he struggles a lot as an example. It is later kind of implied that he actually really is super OP but he has to "unlock" his power and getting it from his "Soul-Dress" which are kind of like Stands from Jojo or Zanpakoutous... more>> from Bleach but much lamer.

I really tried to like this but it is way too much "Shounen" for me. Characters are cookie-cutter, predictable and so is the plot. MC is also the typical "herbivore/beta" who gets a harem for no real reason other than being moderately powerful and a "nice guy". All girls and women seemingly fall for him immediately and obsess over him while he keeps them all at some distance (typical shounen).

Other than that the setting is also very strange. You've got a seemingly typical medieval-type fantasy setting with swords and magic but at the same time, there are also helicopters and jets flying around. No idea what's going on there. <<less

I like the first three translated novels so I decided to read the raws using google translate. It was a bit disappointing. He seems to be the stereotypical passive Japanese protagonist that allows people to push him around.

*This is what I understood from the raws so there could be inaccuracies* After spending a billion years stuck within an isolated dimension he finally "escapes", by escape I mean he was able to slowly cause a tear in the dimension and get out when the countdown reached the end of the 100 million loop, I think that was when the dimension becomes most vulnerable. He wakes up, first thinks it was a dream but proceed to realize that it wasn't when he beats that one guy who talked sh*t about his mom. You would think he would have some sort of psychological issues being isolated for such a long time. Either act dead, emotionless or be extremely crazy/expressive since the dimension would prevent him from have strong emotions but nope. He is just your normal, strong, filial piety following, good neighborhood youngster. I kept on reading since its not that bad but stopped when I realized what kind of OP character we got. He was having trouble beating an opponent from the opposing school (he ended up going to one of the top five school, current ranked 5th and been slowly on the decline so now its his responsibility to bring it back to the top #MakesHisSchoolGreatAgain) and was about to get killed when he loses consciousness and his other self takes over (a wild psychological disorder has appeared!!). His physical body changes, hair becomes longer and white and gets some black tattoo going down his eyes. He proceeds to destroy the opponent and was about to kill him until one of the main harem members stopped him and begs him not to do it. She wants his old gentle self to comeback. At first he doesn't listen but then finally stops when he was going to do the deed and proceeds to faint. Keep in mind that they have only known each other for about 1 week but since she is harem member #2, you gotta show some face. Scene skip, the headmasters of the top 5 schools are discussing how to discipline the two contestants because both broke both the rules. His opponent was also going for blood before getting the sh*t beaten out of him. So they decided to suspend the opponent for a month. When it gets to the MC, they want to force him to dropout but the resolution fails 3-2, so he gets to stay in school. The top two schools don't want to lose their position hence trying get rid of him. I dislike the fact that even after spending so much time training he doesn't have fate in his own hands. Swordsmanship is just one aspect, it seems people can have soul weapons or something like that. His mom knows the old time hermit so there is some background movement going on.

Dropped at chapter 7 part2, I already couldn't handle the main character anymore, he gets way too much on my nerves with his cliché "hey I'm overpowered as f*ck but I'm still a huge beta" personality.

I started to read it because it seemed interesting but no matter how much I tried to wrap my head around it there is no way in hell someone can practice a skill for a billion year and still be getting his a** handed to him by someone the same age as him like come on it has the overpowered tag on it and yet he is basically getting used by everyone he meets

I find this novel quite badly written and not well thought.

1. Author is not sure if it is medieval setting or modern one, you got no cars but there is electricity and modern electronic.

2. The whole “mystery” about MC mother and Time Hermit is to forced, illogical, has many loopholes, and has no sense at all...

Not worth your time...

About translation, I noticed that comments under chapter are heavy moderated, and negative one tend disappear or not appear at all.

I was so disappointed in this one, you know the saying:"The higher the expectation, the larger the disappointment"? The idea was so great, I was wishing for a deep delve into human psyche and how being trapped for millions of years would affect his state of mind and how he views the world. However, you know what's better, why doesn't he just forget everything! What's the use of the title if it literally has no other effect after chapter 2! It's just a useless powerup mechanic at the start of... more>> the story! What use is it if it has no effect on the story, should've just made him wake up with those powers and it would make no difference. Makes me mad just thinking about it. <<less

Inconsistent af.

He spent 100 years to mimic and improve 4 different styles. Now if you wanted the best genius of all time they might be able to do that in a day

So his 100 years is a day in super ultra mega genius time. So let's add it up. A year is 36500, 3 years is ~110000, that makes his 1.1 billion to be ~30000 years of time as a super ultra mega chicken haxor God genius.... And he gets his ass kicked by a 15 year old.

f*ck off. Can't... more>> believe the most illogical thing in a story where a dude trains for a billion years is how sh*t the authors consistency is. <<less

Extremely disappointed, this series had a lot of potential but it turned to standard cliche story (in a bad way, I love cliche). It becomes more visible as you read more how bad the pacing and the writing are.

Only recommend this if you haven't read a lot of Japanese novels because I've seen a lot of other novels using the cliche troops a lot better than this one.

I would call myself an isekai trash and a lover of these kinds of novels, but this novel is pretty sub par compared... more>> to others.

Mini spoiler:

MC trained for 100 million years, but I would call him no more than average compared to the strong ones.

Trained for 100 million years but can't beat a talented opponent around the same age. Have to resort to standard anime cliche were MC borrow power from unknown entity taking over his body (aka bleach ichigo hollow power). <<less

Started with an interesting premise, but the shoddy world building rears it's head (is it set in modern times or not? Why is everyone so into swords?).

Then we get to the tournament when we face 2 genius students the same age, and his character flips flops a bit here. The first opponent traps him in a sub-dimension for 100 years, and he doesn't immediately escape. Was this not a source of trauma for him? Then the second opponent beats him only for some edgy alternate personality to appear, and that is when I decided it was enough. How was a same age person meant to overcome this guys 10 X 100 million years of training? He can cut space/dimensions!

Overall, not something I will continue reading. I'm sure there are plenty of novels out there with similarly interesting premises, and without so much of the flaws. <<less

I was searching for Japanese LN ('OP MC' tag.) when I came across this series.

Well..... In the summary, it looked tempting but when I started reading it..... you can probably imagine what happens when one judges a book by its cover..... It was not that good as I imagined it to be...... To be honest, the lone attitude of MC in the starting chapters was pissing me off somehow..... When he has such OP power, then why can't you use even a percent of it even though you have mostly... more>> forgotten about it..... One other thing that just doesn't make any sense was that when he trained for 100 years in mind due to some reason during a match then how can you improve so little on techniques that you can't even win against that opponent.....

But this is not the sole problem here..... the side characters don't get proper attention and they are ignored on important occasions..... so don't expect anything from them......

About 'Action'..... The scenes that were written are somewhat good.....

This series will greatly depend on one's taste....... It was my personal opinion so don't take any offense......

In my opinion, it was good nor bad..... <<less

I've had high hopes for this one upon reading the teaser chapters but sadly it failed to deliver. I was hoping that the MC would still have even a slightest bit of intelligence coming from his million years of training but alas, we were left with a generic beta male MC which had no hope nor dreams of whatsoever.

The writing style is: thr beauty of a single moment,

but without the descriptive nature to accompany such a style the moment passes quickly as does the chapter.

Therefore the overall value of this story is in the variety of chapters which, in the case of persuing uniqueness, is often left by the wayside.

... more>> (The beauty of a single moment disregards any writing not directly leading to or from a single action or image in the scene creating snapshots of the best parts of a story.)

(Persuing uniqueness has the benifit of producing a much more unique and memorable writing style and at its extremes can create entirely new genres, it does however have the disadvantage of being much slower and harder to write; often leaving a vast variation in quality and styles) <<less

This actually seems quite promising. The depiction of the hell he takes to acquire his power is pretty interesting. Hopefully the author continues with this sort of writing moving forward. Another good sign is that this novel is rated very highly on Syosetsu so give it a try!

Just 2 chapters in, but it's pretty good so far. Much like the translator, I was worried that it would become another generic OP protagonist novel, but it seems a little more than that.

For starters, although he becomes stronger by pressing the button, he's essentially thrown into a living hell. Chapter 2 is dedicated to showing just how badly the immense amount of years he's forced to stay there takes his toll on him. He eventually loses his mind and forgets everything except how to swing a sword. Then he's... more>> forced right back into the world again.

The chapters are very long compared to other novels so hopefully the translator will continue working on it. <<less

Would normally never review or rate a novel after only four chapters, but after seeing it got slapped with a handful of one stars by loser trolls shortly after the first chapter was posted... I'll make an exception here.

Decent start; I find myself looking forward to the next chapter and have added it to my reading list. If it continues like this to chapter 50 it will have officially earned these 5 stars; if not, I'll revise this with a proper rating.

Nice start! Hope it doesn't go downhill and I rly hope the Author brings more world-building so we can actually see what's happening around the character not only character development and character introductions:d. It's 271 Chapters (Ongoing) at 11/6/2019 so yeah I've only read like 7 chapters and I like it so keep it up!

I love stories where ‘the plot thickens’. While the first few chapters are a bit simple plot-wise, chapter 6.1 starts to dig deeper. Looks like this will be a fun novel!

While browsing, I saw this novel, and was intrigued on the title. So I checked it, after reading it until the latest translated chapter, I was suprised! It was a good read!

If only I could understand japanese, I would go straight to the source to read it. Sadly, I can't read them, and with Google Translate, I can barely understand what is being said. Haha

Anyway, looking forward to the coming translated chapters! And looking at the releases, I think I can expect at least one (1) part of a chapter... more>> every 2 days, So I won't have to wait long to read them!

Thanks for picking this up Lightnovel Translations! <<less
