The Failed Swordsman Who Became the Strongest After Spamming the 100 Million Years Button

Description

There was a mysterious old man who approached the failed swordsman with the “100 million years button”. A magic button which can achieve the same effect as training for 100 million years if you push it.

The failed swordsman who pushed the button had his doubts, but immediately felt tremendous power rising in his body. So he pushed the button many times.

However it was a cursed button. The moment it was pushed, he was confined to the 100 million years prison of time. The first 100 years were devoted solely to training. After 1000 years he had forgotten why he swung his sword. He stopped thinking completely after 10,000 years had passed. After 100 million years he became crippled and finally managed to return to the real world. At the same time losing all his memories from the past 100 million years, the only thing that remained were his sword techniques. “I can become stronger just by pressing the button!” or so he thought and pushed the button many times after that. Foolishly trapping himself in that 100 million years of hell each time.

As he continued this loop, he began to think “If I destroy this world, will I get out of here?” A few billion years later, he finally escaped from the loop.

This is the story of a failed swordsman trying to make a name for himself in the world.

Inconsistent af.

He spent 100 years to mimic and improve 4 different styles. Now if you wanted the best genius of all time they might be able to do that in a day

So his 100 years is a day in super ultra mega genius time. So let's add it up. A year is 36500, 3 years is ~110000, that makes his 1.1 billion to be ~30000 years of time as a super ultra mega chicken haxor God genius.... And he gets his ass kicked by a 15 year old.

f*ck off. Can't... more>> believe the most illogical thing in a story where a dude trains for a billion years is how sh*t the authors consistency is. <<less

I like the first three translated novels so I decided to read the raws using google translate. It was a bit disappointing. He seems to be the stereotypical passive Japanese protagonist that allows people to push him around.

Spoiler

*This is what I understood from the raws so there could be inaccuracies* After spending a billion years stuck within an isolated dimension he finally "escapes", by escape I mean he was able to slowly cause a tear in the dimension and get out when the countdown reached the end of the 100 million loop, I think that was when the dimension becomes most vulnerable. He wakes up, first thinks it was a dream but proceed to realize that it wasn't when he beats that one guy who talked sh*t about his mom. You would think he would have some sort of psychological issues being isolated for such a long time. Either act dead, emotionless or be extremely crazy/expressive since the dimension would prevent him from have strong emotions but nope. He is just your normal, strong, filial piety following, good neighborhood youngster. I kept on reading since its not that bad but stopped when I realized what kind of OP character we got. He was having trouble beating an opponent from the opposing school (he ended up going to one of the top five school, current ranked 5th and been slowly on the decline so now its his responsibility to bring it back to the top #MakesHisSchoolGreatAgain) and was about to get killed when he loses consciousness and his other self takes over (a wild psychological disorder has appeared!!). His physical body changes, hair becomes longer and white and gets some black tattoo going down his eyes. He proceeds to destroy the opponent and was about to kill him until one of the main harem members stopped him and begs him not to do it. She wants his old gentle self to comeback. At first he doesn't listen but then finally stops when he was going to do the deed and proceeds to faint. Keep in mind that they have only known each other for about 1 week but since she is harem member #2, you gotta show some face. Scene skip, the headmasters of the top 5 schools are discussing how to discipline the two contestants because both broke both the rules. His opponent was also going for blood before getting the sh*t beaten out of him. So they decided to suspend the opponent for a month. When it gets to the MC, they want to force him to dropout but the resolution fails 3-2, so he gets to stay in school. The top two schools don't want to lose their position hence trying get rid of him. I dislike the fact that even after spending so much time training he doesn't have fate in his own hands. Swordsmanship is just one aspect, it seems people can have soul weapons or something like that. His mom knows the old time hermit so there is some background movement going on.

I was so disappointed in this one, you know the saying:"The higher the expectation, the larger the disappointment"? The idea was so great, I was wishing for a deep delve into human psyche and how being trapped for millions of years would affect his state of mind and how he views the world. However, you know what's better, why doesn't he just forget everything! What's the use of the title if it literally has no other effect after chapter 2! It's just a useless powerup mechanic at the start of... more>> the story! What use is it if it has no effect on the story, should've just made him wake up with those powers and it would make no difference. Makes me mad just thinking about it. <<less

As many other reviewers have said, this is utter garbage. The story makes zero sense whatsoever. MC is OP - except he's not because apparently everyone and their dog is even more OP - and that is without having even used any cheat button that allows them to train for 100 million years.
Spoiler

MC should've used that time properly and killed himself the moment he was out, because this whole story is shit. At least it would've ended at that point and we wouldn't have to suffer reading this garbage.

[collapse]

I wanted to like it, since the premise sounded good, so I kept on with it. But no, this train wreck is not salvageable in any way, shape or form.
Spoiler

Author should just cut their losses and write a short chapter saying "and then MC realized he's a useless waste of space who can't do anything right and killed himself. The world kept on going because the MC was as insignificant part of the actual world as an ant is. The end."

I find this novel quite badly written and not well thought.

1. Author is not sure if it is medieval setting or modern one, you got no cars but there is electricity and modern electronic.

2. The whole “mystery” about MC mother and Time Hermit is to forced, illogical, has many loopholes, and has no sense at all...

Not worth your time...

About translation, I noticed that comments under chapter are heavy moderated, and negative one tend disappear or not appear at all.

Humanity live on earth since 6 million years ago.

This bit*h of an MC has outlived your ancestor's ancestors. He f*cking outlived humanity. For 100 million years he could have invented sword techniques that far surpassed other techniques and at f*cking least beat the sh*t out of a kid the SAME AGE AS HIM. The kid lived for 15 years and surpassed the MC who lived for 100m years.

summary: MC is a push over and humanity's greatest failure. (Of course in the novel)

Interesting premise for making an MC who is OP and it making some kind of sense but the Author "half-asses" by seemingly nerfing the MC and always making him just as powerful as he needs to be for the plot. Other reviewers already explained the Tournament where he struggles a lot as an example. It is later kind of implied that he actually really is super OP but he has to "unlock" his power and getting it from his "Soul-Dress" which are kind of like Stands from Jojo or Zanpakoutous... more>> from Bleach but much lamer.

I really tried to like this but it is way too much "Shounen" for me. Characters are cookie-cutter, predictable and so is the plot. MC is also the typical "herbivore/beta" who gets a harem for no real reason other than being moderately powerful and a "nice guy". All girls and women seemingly fall for him immediately and obsess over him while he keeps them all at some distance (typical shounen).

Other than that the setting is also very strange. You've got a seemingly typical medieval-type fantasy setting with swords and magic but at the same time, there are also helicopters and jets flying around. No idea what's going on there. <<less

but everything goes down drain if MC is spineless dumb moron, I mean even after 100 Million Years (which made him mini-saitama), he acts like typical spineless moron

Its tr*sh. If you have read any harem novel before, you can skip this one. Except for the first few chapters, everything is basically like all the other ones you read before... but worse. I don't know how the author did it, but he did.

I was actually interested in the first few chapters. But nope. It went far below expectations. This was how I felt about reading the first few chapters of Arifureta, but then after meeting girl no. 2, you could tell the series was going to turn into... more>> another generic run of the mill isekai harem series.

Expect instant love harem members. So, no character development among any of the side characters. MC is the usual useless MC. Even after billions of years of training nothing but technique, he still loses to a girl who only trains for 1 year (but by s*upid bullsh*t he wins by strength? That's not how you write a good story or characters. Take an example for hero academia, one of the few shounen that does character development really good).

Every single character is just the same as all the other characters you've read in your tr*sh harem stories. They aren't any different, and there's nothing unique about them. I don't mind harems if the characters and unique, have character development, or in general, interesting. But like all tr*sh harems, they aren't. Just 1D characters that even a child can make more fully developed.

This story even steals the Zangpato thing from bleach, and the main character is basically a shittier, weaker, more stereotypical sh*t tier japanese person than Ichigo, with non of the coolness or anything that a girl would even instantly fall in love for.

So basically, the moral of the story is the title is a f**king lie. He did not become the strongest. It should be: "After spamming the 100 million years button, I gained the power to make a harem". Because, that's what this story really is about.

But of course, Japan being Japan, any tr*sh harem story will get super popular, while well written characters with real character development and plot depth will fade into obscurity. I guess as a westerner, I prefer stories with more substance than what is basically a self-insert teenage boy fantasy copy cat novel.

I know, I know, I'm expect too much from authors who just want to join in on the cash grab craze, but just because you want to use the usual troupes, doesn't mean you can't do it well. But considering those well written ones aren't that popular, I guess good writing is poison in the japanese webnovel world. <<less

A training of billion years and you have problems to defeat swordsmans of your age, seriously? Wtf, he sever the small world of the time heremite with a slash!

The personality of MC is just more of the same. I think a billions years of torment, even if you only vaguely remember it like a dream, would at least change his personality... disappointing.

I've read a lot of weak stuff, but this work made me want to drop in the first 3 chapters lul. Don't waste your time, it's not worth it

This is rated super low for a reason.

I know I know, the basis of the story makes you interested doesnt it?

It's executed horribly. He spends several 100 million of years training. Let me say that one more time, SEVERAL 100 MILLION YEARS TRAINING. And still manages to struggle against a 15 year old. He litterly slices through space itself. Yet when he cuts other people, they are fine. I mean. What in the world. After 100 million years you would expect just the teeny tiniests amount of psycological growth but... more>> no, there's none. He spends more time alive then the durration of civilization on the planet (presumably, idk how long this fantasy world has been around) yet has the mentality of a 15 year old kid. A beta 15 year old with no backbone at that.

I usually try to read at least 50 chapters to give something a chance. I just couldnt with this. It may get better, I doubt it, but it might. I just can't deal with the MC it makes no sense. I've seen some people who are giving it higher marks so apparently it's decent to some people. I just cannot force myself to read this anymore. <<less

As with many other comments posted, I agree with the disappointment of a relatively good idea/concept with poor execution. Granted I do read for enjoyment and can glaze over most plot holes, but when things get as inconsistent as this novel does, I drop it.

The MC spent billions of years, BILLIONS to come out and not even be anything close to remotely OP, not only that, but all that time by himself did literally nothing for his maturity or sense of self. Read this Novel if you wanna casually see... more>> some harem tropes as long as you can handle a passive beta MC <<less

Unlike most people rating this novel, I've endured and read up to c164 but I'm finally clocking out of this one.

It's cliched and a huge waste of potential. I kind of like the world setting where magic and science co-exists so we get aeroplanes and magical thingymajigys, and the mystery surrounding who the MC really is seems somewhat intriguing if predictable, but the rest...

For one thing, the MC is a moron. A typical Japanese beta male goody two shoes who doesn't kill because of "morals". However, he's supposed to be... more>> training to become a deadly swordsman. His job is literally to cut people down with sharp objects. And practically nobody dies. Not even the most vile villains. Yes, they all survive.

And there's the obligatory harem element where every girl falls for MC for some unfathomable reason. Apparently, he's not even all that good looking or tall or super charismatic, but girls just fall for him left, right, and centre. And when they do, they seem to lose just about all semblance of personalities.

The latest arc began smelling like the onset of "Power of Friendship!!!" shonen cliche so that's when I decided to bale out. <<less

Started with an interesting premise, but the shoddy world building rears it's head (is it set in modern times or not? Why is everyone so into swords?).

Spoiler

Then we get to the tournament when we face 2 genius students the same age, and his character flips flops a bit here. The first opponent traps him in a sub-dimension for 100 years, and he doesn't immediately escape. Was this not a source of trauma for him? Then the second opponent beats him only for some edgy alternate personality to appear, and that is when I decided it was enough. How was a same age person meant to overcome this guys 10 X 100 million years of training? He can cut space/dimensions!

[collapse]

Overall, not something I will continue reading. I'm sure there are plenty of novels out there with similarly interesting premises, and without so much of the flaws. <<less

Extremely disappointed, this series had a lot of potential but it turned to standard cliche story (in a bad way, I love cliche). It becomes more visible as you read more how bad the pacing and the writing are.

Only recommend this if you haven't read a lot of Japanese novels because I've seen a lot of other novels using the cliche troops a lot better than this one.

I would call myself an isekai tr*sh and a lover of these kinds of novels, but this novel is pretty sub par compared... more>> to others.

Mini spoiler:

MC trained for 100 million years, but I would call him no more than average compared to the strong ones.

Spoiler:

Trained for 100 million years but can't beat a talented opponent around the same age. Have to resort to standard anime cliche were MC borrow power from unknown entity taking over his body (aka bleach ichigo hollow power). <<less

I was shocked when I saw the low rating this series got (2.9* at the time this review was written), and I honestly created a NU account just to write this review and give this series some justice.

As other people mentioned, this story and a lot of its troops are indeed clichè. It's not an unique story in any way, nor is it some parody or a deep, psychological novel, and yes, you have probably read / seen similar stories.

However, that in no ways means that this is a bad... more>> novel.

While it is not the greatest novel I have read, reading it was a very enjoyable experience, and in fact, it is probably one of the few novels I feel I was never bored while reading. The plot is fast-paced and packed full of events, and it has a lot of sweet, heartwarming moments as well as some comedy, so it always kept me entertained.

Also, as this novel is really light and "easygoing", it is easy to read and understand. I'd even say that for the purpose of making the reader's experience "lighter" and more relaxed, its genericness actually benefits it.

In conclusion, this series is extremely fun and entertaing to read, and it's highly recommend for those looking for a light read. <<less

I've had high hopes for this one upon reading the teaser chapters but sadly it failed to deliver. I was hoping that the MC would still have even a slightest bit of intelligence coming from his million years of training but alas, we were left with a generic beta male MC which had no hope nor dreams of whatsoever.

Don't bother reading this. The author really can't handle power levels at all and even though the concept of training for extra time is the point of the entire story, the author clearly doesn't understand or doesn't care.

Right off the bat, the 100 million years is just an exaggeration that doesn't make any sense. The author definitely should not have gone past 4 digits for the number of years. They even mentioned (but then totally dismissed) the fact that the MC went crazy at one point due to the isolation... more>> after 5000 years. Honestly the MC would have gone crazy within the first 100 years of being utterly alone in a tiny unchanging world. You can read "Everyone Else is a Returnee" for a way better version of how this training should have been handled. When the MC gets out, he has obviously mastered his ability to swing a sword. Now, this actually could still have been fine. The MC, with his perfect understanding of his ability to swing a sword, would have incredibly fast and deadly strikes and excellent agility but would have made no real improvement in predicting his opponents moves or responding to their strategies. When you add in the magic that others have but MC lacks, this still could have been done in a way where the MC is challenged by opponents that are worse swordsmen but better fighters. Instead, the author has no interest in maintaining the power levels and the MC's time training just becomes plot armor and eventually becomes worthless. Very early in the story, the MC loses to a 15 year old opponent from another school. The opponent is so much physically faster and stronger than the MC that he can beat the MC without any sort of swordsmanship. I understand that he is supposed to be some sort of rival that is the opposite of the MC (tons of talent but doesn't bother training vs. The MC's no talent with tons of training) but the author establishes that the MC was physically in the sped up time room and just didn't age. At one point in the story, somebody comments on the development and calluses of the MC's hands and it is made clear that it is a result of his millions of years of training. Now, there is a limit to muscle growth and if you aren't doing weight-lifting training it makes sense that you aren't necessarily going to have the most physical strength in your age group. But even without specifically focusing on muscle-training, there is simply no justification for any teenager to be able to utterly dominate the MC in a straight physical contest. To make things worse, the opponent is just one of many teenagers who are able to completely block or nullify the MC's techniques without magic. Not evade. Not barely divert. Just utterly knock aside one of his techniques with a simple sword swing. That is literally the only thing that should be impossible. The MC should be a glass cannon. His attacks should be deadly while his footwork, situational awareness, and strategy all need work. But clearly that is too much thinking for this author. So instead, after the MC gets his ass kicked for a while, he magically gets a power up and starts becoming ridiculous strong, fast and durable. So you have somebody with millions of years of training who is gaining super-human physical abilities at a ridiculous rate. How does he keep meeting people who are stronger, faster, and better than him? It's a bunch of s*upid nonsense.

Having gotten all of that off of my chest, the actual portrayal of the day-to-day is decent for the genre. The MC does all the usual school stuff, gets followed around by his small harem, and interacts with several one-dimensional characters who sort of pop up occasionally to show that the MC has a successful school life. No terrible info-dumps, chapters are a decent length, good ratio of dialogue to description. I guess that you could say that it's good editing? Whatever the case, as long as you like the story it won't be a pain to read. It's a slice of life Japanese LN about a magic sword academy. And occasionally it remembers that it is supposed to be a shounen action story. <<less

Surprisingly, I am bored enough to read this whole thing. Now here's a thing. For anyone that is obsessed about OP MC with overly humble to the point of being indirectly sarcastic and lot of common troop and reference that didn't need more explaination. This is a thing for you. If not, don't read it. I see some ppl try to push this up by giving it 4/5 stars but I gonna put this into where it's belong.

Here's some bit of detail breakdown with spoiler :

Spoiler

The guy having low self esteem even after winning overwhelmingly againts strong opponents. Him being overly humble would be already an insult to everyone that lose to him. The premise of story is set in fantasy world that have nothing to do with earth but author just keep splashing these famous event like chrismas, valentine into story. Can't you think of anything new? Also remember that MC mind being affected by how many time pass inside that button? I think it also affected author too. Look at first chapter and compare it to the latest. The chapter is being overly shorten to the point of annoying. If you watch dragon ball, you know that scene about frieza told goku that the planet would blow up in 5 mins but the fight keep going on for 10+ chapter? Yes. This is the same. Seem like the already out-of-idea author that splash common troop without even making change is having even less idea to put into story so he just make shorter chapter to retain release schedule and he didn't even have a gut to cut the story close even when he clearly running out of idea. Seriously, the chapter feel like he just start doing it at last minute before putting out chapter

[collapse]

All of that is just some part of it. There are more on the other's review so I won't say anymore. I won't call this novel either. This is just a kid's sketch book. <<less
