Book 1 Review:

This novel is an absolute gem. I was expecting a lot of non-con and a lot of disturbing aspects, but I was surprised when I found that it was surprisingly sweet. The 'bd*m' parts are not overly heavy, and in my opinion, are just right for a smut novel. The main characters both have an Underworld background, so their interactions outside of their relationship adds another layer to their romance. Also, the MC basically always consents to their sex/bd*m stuff (I think this is explained pretty early on... more>> in the novel; the MC can only find pleasure in pain), so don't be too worried about that. The ML does scheme to make MC unable to leave him, but he is pretty considerate to MC outside of s*x. They actually communicate with one another and I really like that part about the novel. There is a little drama, but it was kinda necessary, since MC has pretty low EQ and doesn't realize it.

Example of sweetness:

Spoiler

MC: "Can I... can I hug you?" ML: "No, only I can hug you" and proceeds to hug MC

Anywayyss, if you're into bl, smut, and a little bit of sweetness, I think this is a great novel to try out :3 <<less

So...I just finished the first novel at 5:40 AM... when I have a quiz today and a presentation and need to wake up at 9 AM....

Needless to say, I really liked the first novel. I MTLed it (if y'all need the link to raws just message me, because I'm not sure if I can post links on reviews but I'm pretty quick with responses anyway) through Google translate. I guess Google Translate has really upped its quality over the years because the quality of the MTL was very coherent and... more>> superb. It basically felt like a translation with no awkwardness.

Anyways, the novel itself transitions from a stage to uncertainty, tension, then utter dog food. I think it's a great ride. The Ml, though very possessive and controlling, still knows what lines to not cross and for the most part gets the MC's consent. The MC is more of a bunny shou than a cunning businessmen with what you would expect from his background, but that didn't deter from liking this set up at all (expect for some dubious moments). Instead, I think the MC was way more like a person who wears his heart on his sleeve--which made me think he was naïve at first, but it can also be seen as courageous.

Overall, a good kinky and steamy novel that can have you on the edge of your seat. Sit back and enjoy. <<less

Managed to completely mtl this in one sitting and came out enjoying it so a quick review right off the bat.

The MC is a cute floof looking to excite himself as a greenhorn sub. The ML is an experienced, gentle dom whose rules involve obedience (duh), trust, and honesty. The tension of the early chapters really drew me into the development of the relationship between the MC and the ML: from mutual attraction into gradually entrenching themselves into each other's lives in the midst of plots, work and family matters.... more>> The MC naturally struggles with the insecurities and obstacles of developing the bd*m relationship, but nothing that can't be solved through having open discussions with the ML, whether during smut or not. That's really the good stuff here, good communication and understanding between partners in boundaries, love and life matters.

Their romance naturally fell into place in such a way it's hard to know who fell first. The MC fell for the gentleness, immense restraint, and indulgence from the ML. Although MC kinda lacks EQ, he is open with his affection, love, tolerance and trust for the ML so it's no wonder why the ML loves him. At some point, they've already felt like such a married couple with their degree of communication, trust and understanding between them that I was surprised they were together only a couple months.

Thanks to the translator for introducing this novel and for starting to translate the series. That example of sweetness from the translator is what made me want to read through the novel because they do really adore each other. <<less

Want something to stimulate your mind for a bit? Need a break from typical world hopping/transmigration stories with cookie cutter characters and similar plotlines? Want some some smexy scenes smut and emotional p*rn? Smex. Fluff. Smex. Fluff. Give this one a whirl!

Translation quality so far: better than MTL (machine translated - aka google translating the novel)

Readability of MTL: Doable, especially if you’ve MTLed other novels before and are familiar with common terminology

Thanks to the translator for picking this up! Wouldn't have found this novel otherwise. Looking forward to reading... more>> the rest of the novel again, but decently translated.

Spoilers for those who want some more content:

Spoiler

Happy Ending! :) One vs one

Main character is a rich bratty boy exploring the realm of BD*M. He is naive, curious, and a little greedy. Haha. Wanting to reap the benefits without giving up too much. I liked that he enjoyed the BD*M, but also resisted certain toys/types of play/commands initially. But he eventually starts to trust and give himself to the ML. I was invested in following his gradual character development into becoming a s*ave.

Main love interest is an experienced and highly sought after dom who is trying to acclimate the main character into being his sub/s*ave. He's also a really powerful person. Kinda typical cold love interest who warms up only to the main character, but the BD*M aspect of the story makes it interesting and the way he treats the main character too. He's not driven by "instinct" and will not f*ck the main character because he's a horn dog.

I really liked that the main love interest never forced the main character into having s*x with him. A few times, I freaked out with the main character when he was getting punished, but the punishment would stop before it went too far and would comfort the main character and ask why he reacted a certain way.

I also like that they are mutually affectionate with each other and you can tell. And it's not a mindbreak story. (One person gets broken by s*x and s*x is all they can think about) They're a married couple who enjoys kinks by the end of the story.

... There's a certain part of the story that... that really just captivated me.

When the ML lifted the curtains and took off his mask while saying, "You can't escape."

That made me...soaked.

... more>> And I bravely continued reading.

I started reading the BD*M genre again for a whimsical reason, the first being "waiting upon you" a year or two ago.

But I couldn't finish that one because the pressure was too intense for me and I didnt know what to do with myself. *blush*

I'd say this is a bit lighter in comparison. Of course, the dominance is present and astounding, but there isnt a dark psychological undertone to it unlike WUY.

Its a good read and I loved the gradual process and development of their relationship.

I also found that I became more involved in the lead's emotional development of their relationship. (So I really couldn't *beep*)

Good stuff. Good fluff. Great s*x.

5/5

Just finished reading it using Google Translate (which is pretty good suprisingly) and I just want to say that I really didn't regret wasting my time for it. This is one of the best bd*m novels I've read. The scenes and the interaction between the MC and ML (Volume 1) is so natural and professional. I'm so amazed. This novel is worthy to be placed in my personal archive where I put the best and most memorable novels I encountered in my life lol 😉.

I read all three volumes (totally mtled) and this is by far the best bl novel I've ever read.. I heard there's a fourth volume bt I couldn't find it anywhere.. Plz help!!

Vol. 1: This being my first encounter with a bl bd*m novel its really my fav out of those 3.. If you're here for some hardcore bd*m vol 1 is for u!! It has the best smutt and is full of smutt wid a decent storyline (had me weeping oofff) I've already read it many times I'm so... more>> obessed with it. I just love the connection between MC and ml. This is like the perfect master and s*ave relationship ever like the best dominance and submission. And their relationship develops into such a cute one oof and those smutts just hit at the right spot and this is probably the longest one too and since I like longer bl this is definately my fav. Hope this gets translated too ╥﹏╥

Vol 2: It has a good story and has a lot of smut and also some bd*m bt I wouldn't call it bd*m really because bottom isn't actually a sub and its for a treament purpose ig bt all in all its really gud and it relly stands out from v1 and v3 as those volume is kind of like the storyline of same family but this volume is also linked with those two as this is about friend of MC and ML from first volume

Vol 3. Jus finished it and at first I didnt quite liked it cuz of all those r*pe it was so painful to read that was the first time I cried during a smutt scene gosh. But the story development is there as well as some character development as the past between MC and ML unfolds. If you are looking for story this is for u. You just have to get through the r*pe in the beginning of the story and at the end everything turns really sweet. There is bd*m but not as much as the first vol I'd say and it is smutty with a very nice storyline I cried the most in this volume ngl I really want more chapters of this but it ended too quick it had a happy ending I'm nt complaining bt I jus wanted a lot more sweet time between MC and ML ╥﹏╥ its really short considering moareeee!! <<less

I could only find translation for Book 3 so the review is for only that.

Both MC and ML were wrong in how they treated each other in the beginning. Misunderstanding and lack of communication made their relationship full of hurt. ML who was hiding his love for MC, was lured into a trap because of MC who was struggling because of loss of his father and made a s*upid mistake to join hands with enemy to overthrow ML. Things became bad definitely because MC started with his betrayal but I... more>> truly hated the ML until last chapters when they finally opened up to each other. I hate the r*pe parts but the tags clearly said that and I won't give less stars for that.

This one made me cry and I wasn't expecting that from a BD*M smut novel. I like that this is not one of the straight to the papapa no plot smuts. I got emotionally attached to the characters and it hurt to see them struggling. The writing was definitely beautiful and translation was easy to follow too.

Will suggest this to others but it can be triggering to a lot of people so make sure to read all the tags before you start!!! <<less

I finished all 3 books and have to say all of it is a masterpiece although there are r*pe scenes in book 2 (minimal) and 3 (a lot more).

The story is well-paced and realistic. The author did make an effort to research this topic and made it seem realistic and believable. Book 1 and 2 are significantly longer than 3 but 3 is the one that hits you the most. It is easy to MTL but would recommend you to read the chinese one if you are able to because... more>> the translation cant capture the essence of the story well.

What I like about book 1 and 2 the doms are really sweet to their subs!!! But for book 3 it's a little different, I cant say more because I would be spoiling the story. But all 3 books have HE. <<less

I skipped the first volume as the second volume has more chapters. It was very easy to MTL the rest of the chapters btw

2nd Volume - I like this story a lot! It’s not the typical BD*M especially since the MC wasn’t a sub in the first place, it was very interesting to see how they eventually became partners. There’s angst and argh some chapters broke my heart but it was definitely worth it to see how the ML cared for the MC and how they both unconsciously fell in... more>> love

I look forward to reading the 1st and 3rd volumes! <<less

I love love love this series so much. I'm so glad one of the translators from House of Hoeni decided to translate all the books (series 1-4) ! Now... how to review without giving away too many spoilers?

Basically, there are four books and all their dynamics are different and the way they portray their BD*M relationships. Ofc ranging from the healthy, to the not so much, cough, cough, book 3, cough. So if you love BL BD*M, as well as more mature themes, then you should definitely give surrender a... more>> try! Of course, I might be biased as I do speed-read a lot of strong, and dare I say VERY STRONG BL. So my tastes are very weird and particular. But I think this is a good read for those who want to learn more about BD*M and also the trust and responsibility needed. Not all the couples in the series are toxic, some are nice!

Just read and find out for yourself! Don't judge solely based on Book 3 listed on NU. Not sure why the complete translated one is not added here...? <<less

I got really speechless reading v3 that I didn't take it seriously in the end, anyway the best thinks about this novel is that it's has an end

The MC development was intersting but he acts out of the ordinary Sometime... For example the first thing he did after waking up after attempting su*cide because he was subjected to horrible r*pe for two months and forced to practice bd*m with his cousin (ML) who was closer to being his brother and no longer even able to ejaculate is that he... more>> acts normally as if nothing had happened and starts running a company even without mentioning any psychological breakdowns or hatred towards the rapist. The most terrible thing is that the ML comes to him and threatens him that he will detain him again as a sub if the company does not work well, yes I appreciate his concern..... But this doesn't seem to me anything that might be said to someone who tried to commit su*cide a while ago.... No, and the worst thing is that everyone in the house who witnessed these things happen believed that he really deserved it and kept scolding the MC every time they glimpsed him because he did not appreciate the blessing he had just because he did not know that his cousin was secretly obsessed with him.... No, I am not finished yet. And then the parents of the ML come and begin to glorify their son and mention the subject as if his fault was forgeting hus homework

Yes I understand they are mafia or whatever but they were so wierd

What's more even the MC said when the ML gave him a chance to revenge that he deserved what happened to him? I really didn't understand? I mean, he was lazy, selfish, jealous, and made a mistake by betraying the ML, but why is the focus on his mistakes exaggerated just to patch up the ML mistakes?

It was as if raping someone, psychologically destroying them, and driving them to su*cide was something that was seen every day

This novel could have been more interesting if events had developed more naturally after the su*cide attempt, such as the initiation of greater psychological conflicts between the cp and the emotional escalation between them, rather than oh let's put it a side ! Or that the ml's motive for doing what he did is not just jealousy! Because that's actually inconsistent with his supposed love for MC all those years ago
Rather, should shows him as a twisted personality from the very begining and has Abnormal tendencies towards the MC.... You know that kind of character who considers realizing their feelings from the other side to be a legitimate, sacred right, and with these accumulations, the Insanities finally exploded in his mind. I will give it two stars just bc I cried in the first Chapters and had a high hope about it <<less

I finished all four books (in Chinese). The first three books are a solid 4 stars for me. The characters are not bad, and I like how the doms are super loving and tender to their subs. I also like that even though each book can stand on its own, the characters are recurring throughout all the books. If you read all the books, you get a deeper understanding of the persona of each book's MC and ML, and how they portray themselves to others, etc. And it's nice to... more>> see what MC and ML from book one are doing in later books, what MC and ML from book two are doing later, etc. Plus it's done quite naturally, so it doesn't feel like the author just inserted them into later books for fans' sake; they are actually relevant to the plot as side characters.

I can see the author's writing improving from book to book. For example in the early books, there are some inconsistencies/contradictions in the characterization and some small plot holes, but there are fewer inconsistencies in the later books.

BUT my primary purpose in writing this review is to say...

BOOK 4 is an ABSOLUTE GEM. I can't wait until it gets translated so that more people can read it! The characters are solid, and the author does such a great job of telling their backstory. You can really see the events that affected them and made them who they are now.

First big point...

Spoiler

THEY SWITCH. So if you (like me) are into that kind of rare occurrence in BL novels, then book 4 is perfect for you.

[collapse]

And the rest of my review of book 4:

Spoiler

MC is Qin Mu/Pharaoh from books 1 and 2. The characters are not perfect people (especially ML) but that makes them stronger as characters. There is a lot of tension and angst. I cried several times. What makes this book different from 1 & 2 is that the characters have known each other for a long time and have a lot of backstory together. Another thing that makes this one different from the previous books is... there is more plot. Not that the others didn't have plot of course, but they were more focused on BD*M. This one is more like, there are BD*M scenes but it's not the MAIN storyline/focus.

I would say there are two major themes in this book. The first one is how if you have power and influence, you can control everything and override "justice." This is also a theme in the first three books, but WAY stronger in book 4. The other main theme is about... lying or manipulating someone in order to protect them—even though the intentions are good, it is still manipulation. So the book plays with the idea of the balance of how far ML is willing to go to protect/shelter MC vs. whether MC actually wants to be protected/sheltered.

Vol 1 - dropped halfway:

Tried this one after vol 3, and I disliked the ML so much I had to drop it. I don't get why other reviewers find it romantic - the ML is an a*hole and it makes no sense why the MC likes him. The MC becomes very attracted to the ML extremely quickly, only because he's a good dom, yet breaks off their contract early in their relationship for a very good reason:

Spoiler

ML is part of an extremely powerful and ruthless gangster family with some pretty insane family members. The MC almost dies after the ML's brother forces him to drink an lethal amount of alcohol, solely because he dared to bid on a painting at an auction without knowing that the gangster was the other bidder. The ML is so powerful that he can easily kill the MC, and saving him from his insane brother (who then humiliates him by calling him a 'toy') is just doing the bare minimum, not some heroic deed.

[collapse]

The MC has every reason to be scared of the ML and not wanting to be with him for his own safety, and the ML had no reason to be so super petty about being broken up with that he literally forces and humiliates the MC, then forces him into a relationship. It feels especially hypocritical when the ML previously explained that the MC could trust him not to hurt him (he breaks that promise) and that the master-s*ave relation was just role-playing and the MC still had his free will (he 100% goes back on that promise the second he doesn't get what he wants).

I can only conclude that the author likes to writes about forced relationships and noncon, but also at the same time wants to portray BD*M as a consensual kink play. But it's either or - you can't both claim the BD*M is fully consensual and the romanticize the ML when he forces the MC.

Vol 3 - completed:

I struggle to rate this story - I've only completed volume 3 so far (there are 4 in total, but only vol 3 is translated), and this story is allegedly the most abusive one. So mind the TWs:

Rape, s*xual abuse, forced BD*M, r*pe victim becomes lover - also (spoiler) :

Spoiler

The ML breaks down and humiliates the MC to the point where he becomes suicidal and throws himself out the window to escape.

[collapse]

Now, the story is told exclusively from the MC's point of view, so while the reader is told early on that the MC betrayed his cousin, the ML, to try and take over the family business (and the family is basically a group of gangsters with a legitimate facade, so not nice people) with the help of an ambitious subordinate turned traitor (and because the MC is naïve, the other schemer uses him to get hold of and imprison the ML), it is only revealed very late in the story that in fact

Spoiler

the ML was tortured by the other guy because the MC was complicit in a scheme to capture him, so the ML continues to suffer on a regular basis and the MC later feels horribly guilty for his betrayal/making him suffer when he finds out

[collapse]

I have to say, I don't like it when the author uses this kind of plot device with late reveals that changes the dynamic between the characters and who owes who/who was the worst person. It feels a bit cheap and as if the author tries to save the ML's character from being hated by readers and making the MC feel pity and have a reason to fall in love with the ML despite how much the ML abused the MC.

I don't mind stories with abusive characters, but I honestly dislike it when

Spoiler

an abusive character gets excused with the logic of having suffered himself. The ML's suffering being due to the MC does not make it okay for the ML to r*pe and humiliate the MC. Especially because he doesn't do it for revenge, but out of jealousy.

[collapse]

And to make matters worse, even after the MC is abused to the point where

Spoiler

he suffers a mental breakdown and tries to kill himself

[collapse]

the ML still won't let him go completely, even though logically, the result of his abuse should mean

Spoiler

that the ML has gotten revenge and the MC can be said to have been punished for his previous betrayal

[collapse]

So all in all, I don't buy the romance, I don't think the ML deserved to get the MC, and I don't find it logical that the MC falls in love with the ML, considering how he originally never had any romantic or s*xual attraction towards the ML. And logically, the MC should have been so broken that he wouldn't have gotten over the abuse so quickly.

The MC literally suffered from
Spoiler

PTSD and was afraid of the ML - it makes no sense that he would be able to engage in BD*M with him even if the ML didn't actually have s*x with him

[collapse]

On top of that, while the novel portrays the ML as a sort of good guy, he is in fact a gangster. His father subjects him to a torture-like training to groom him to become the new leader of the family, and the conflicts with the rivalling gangsters gets so many people killed it seems a bit ridiculous. How would that go unnoticed/be tolerated by the authorities?

And there's the mention of the ML punishing the guy who acted against him by literally having his wife and daughter r*ped repeatedly. It's brushed over, but seriously, how does that not make the ML into a terrible person? Why is he portrayed as the hero?

A small detail that I was also not a fan of:

Spoiler

the ML and the rival gang engages in a life-and-death struggle for dominance, and the ML knows it can result in a lot of people dying, yet he doesn't take any steps to secure the rest of the family or the people working for the family. As a result, almost everyone working for the MC gets mu*dered.

It's mentioned once and emphasizes how the MC and ML are at heart good people, because the MC gets really sad and the ML silently comforts him and takes care of all the funerals. But it's the ML's fault that all these innocent people got mu*dered. And it felt like a convenient plot point that the author came up with to ensure that the MC and ML are able to form a family with the orphan daughter of the MC's housekeeper (which he also saved from her abusive ex). And it's portrayed as morally just that the MC and ML adopts the girl despite their unconventional relationship (which they don't exactly keep hidden - they have s*x and engage in BD*M pretty openly and don't seem to take much precaution despite having a small child in the house). And they reason any concerns away with a 'well the girl's parents had a conventional marriage but the dad was abusive, so we're the good guys'.

Neither MC or ML considers whether they should 1) be careful with their s*x life when they now have a child in their house or 2) that the girl's mother was mu*dered because of the ML's business conflict and that adopting the child might put her at risk in the future.

So it feels pretty much like the author conveniently erases/kills off the child's mother just so the CP can get a 'real' family and be happy in a conventional way. The adoption plot could have worked if it was a real part of the story and not just tagged on, or the CP were seen to act as real parents/caregivers to the child (besides eating with her and dropping her off to kindergarten).

[collapse]

So I'm giving this a 3 star rating because the author just made everything a little too convenient without considering what would be logical and psychologically realististic under the circumstances, and there's a slight misogynist tinge to the story (women in the story are treated as disposable and to serve the main characters' goals and convenience - whether it's to make the MC look good, give the CP a child of their own or as tools for revenge). Plus if you're writing an abusive ML, don't make excuses for his abuse to make the romantic ending work, it's lazy writing. <<less

I really like this series so much. There's actually 4 books. (Earl, lion, earl's son and pharoh) I wished we could have one on Tom and Jerry as well.

The book is just so captivating and different. Can't comment about the bd*m cuz I don't know any better but everything just works.

The s*x was hot, the characters were believable, the stories were griping. I shed a few tears and just didn't want their stories to end.

Highly recommended.

Read the first book and felt that it explored bd*m very well which is rare in BL novels. Smut scenes written very well. I do feel like the MC and ML had deeper feelings for each other but the book was so short it was never really explored properly which was a shame. That’s my only critique. It’s a must read if you’re interested in bd*m being portrayed properly.
