The Northern Garrison Prince possesses authority that reaches all the way to heaven, surpassing tens of thousands of people. The Northern Garrison Prince is licentious and lustful, not distinguishing between female and male partners, with a brutality beyond compare—though he has taken nine concubines as wives, not a single one managed to survive. This time, the Northern Garrison Prince is interested in the daughter of the prefectural magistrate.

To prevent her fate of being tormented to death by the Northern Garrison Prince—just as the crown prince was switched with a raccoon dog—a mute s*ave from the magistrate’s residence is sent as a substitute on the marriage sedan. The mute s*ave was born with the beauty of an exiled immortal, but also the disability of voicelessness; because of his appearance that might attract misfortune, he was locked away in the courtyard by his mother.

Suddenly one day, the prefectural magistrate’s household bestows upon him the name of Shen Yu and sends people to teach him how to serve another before delivering him onto the bed of the “Living King of Hell.” Will he become the tenth ghost to die unjustly under the Northern Garrison Prince’s body?

Possessive, sadistic, obsessive gong/seme... ah! The tags are really to my liking! I was first afraid looking at the 'tragedy' in genre section, then read at the end of synopsis its a HE. Good. Looking forward to completion of translation then I can rate if the author handled the characters and story well. I really liked Hua hua you long, hope so this one's good too. Then I'll come back to rate and re-review.

And those babies complaining about abuse, r*pe etc. Read the tags, if it's out of one's comfort... more>> zone, don't read. I can recommend much worse ones, after reading them, you won't complain much. Start from Flesh cartel, Gamble everything, Schadenfreude by 19 etc. All bl. *wink* <<less

Okay first half was really good. Tears and pain! Such a naive and pitiful mute, but the hurt and pain made him grew independent and strong! Then the second half just felt flat!!! MC started out the worst person but suddenly falls in love and willing to give everything up to be love again by the ML. Just didn’t give the reader enough realistic transition to allow readers to want and believe that they should be together.

Then sh*t got weird!!!!
Spoiler

ML can get pregnant!!! No, I am not liking this plot twist at all. This just ruined the story for me. Everything was realistic and believable then it turns into a magical fairytale crap!

I think the story is good. It is quite entertaining to read so I give it a 4 star rating. The things that entertained me were the struggles of the MC and how he tried hard to overcome his circumstances as well as the effort of the prince in the latter parts of the story.

However, I didn't really feel much for the characters. The characters that I liked are actually side characters. The MC is admirable, but I am more invested in his struggles than on him as a character.... more>> He is a likable character tho because despite his circumstances he was able to grow out of it and fight for himself. He isn't entirely dependent on the ML.
Spoiler

This is the reason why the ML realized his worth and started treasuring him

.

If you are into violent and possessive semes turning into sweet and gentle ones and trying hard to change for their object of affection, this is for you. If you are able to withstand almost a hundred chapters of abuse and sadness for the MC, then surely you would enjoy this. As for me however, I liked the guard in this story so naturally it was only him that I could support for the MC.

Spoiler

Why do I support Song Qing for the MC? He was actually the only real one who cared for MC. They have the most wholesome moments in the story. They pull each other up and that scene when for the first time he called the MC by his nickname -- "Yu-er." My heart melted. You wonder why it was not him he fell in love with. He used to be so naive and blinded towards the Prince, that was understandable since it was his first time that he was attached to someone else that is not his mother, but.. Why can't he feel the same towards Song Qing? There was even a time where the prince got jealous of Song Qing because the MC and him had a good relationship. Plus MC said that he was the only one he can rely on in the latter part of the story. This is my frustration really. And this frustration lead me to imagine Song Qing as the ML. Song Qing has his own pair tho, that person, while I'm ok towards, is questionable because he frequently drugged Song Qing in order to have s*x with him. Plus because of jealousy there was a time that he bullied MC.

[collapse]

I was debating whether to drop this or not since I already witnessed what I wanted to read in this story but I also wanted to know the events that would lead the couple to finally be together so I guess I have to continuing mtling this until the end. I'll prolly imagine some other character as the ML.

I am also confused at some parts. Maybe it was because I mtled but there were things that made go, "how did you know? Didn't you say earlier that you had no idea about such and such because your parents didn't tell you anything, " and "how did this even happen?" Seriously, this is also sorta harem-ish so if you hate that then this would piss you off because everyone falls in love with the MC except that two concubines of the prince, Red Lotus and Song Qing.
Spoiler

This is also one of the reasons why for me, Song Qing is the true nth-lead. And his "falling in love" with the MC (I'm not sure if he was really in love romantically or he just sees his first love in MC that's why he's like that but I think he actually liked him slightly in that way altho not really strong enough to be called romantic in nature. Its really more platonic).

[collapse]
Everyone is just aholes to me.

I have to mention though that the reason why MC woke up from his love was true to the nature of the ML who is the most selfish and arrogant bastard there is. I thought this bit was ??? At first but then I realized this was truly something the ML would do based on his personality so I guess it's ok.

Not everyone will enjoy this story because of the relationship of the characters and sometimes annoying softness of the MC towards ML but I guess to those who aren't really that picky with their ship dynamic and accept anything as long as it is entertaining, this is for you. <<less

This novel is NOT okay!

MC was so weak and so naive at the beginning, his way of thinking was so unbearably childlish. His character looked pitiful. He got a little better later as the novel went on. His character development was arguably good. He successfully angered me throughout the whole book.

ML's character was interesting, not very good but acceptable. He was strong and unlike the MC, he was smart. He was a heartless abusive character at first, after he fell in love with the MC he became a caring person... more>> just to please the MC and win his heart back.

Plot was NOT intriguing (compared with the novels I've read so far) In a novel, there should be something to fall in love with, BUT I didn't find anything like that in this novel. It was disappointing. <<less

Wow! I didn't know that Silent Lover was actually adapted from a novel. I've only seen the manhua so I'm rating the novel based on that.

There's no doubt I'll enjoy this even more than the manhua. With more detailed descriptions and scenes.

Silent Lover is about a otherworldly naive beautiful mute who only wants to find the one for him.

Is it the emperor? Who knows.

But he sure is definitely making it harder for our MC and the readers, that's for sure! 😂

First crematorium book I read, and it is really good one.

Actually I only wanted to post how I agree with the comment below not to read the ancient style novels with modern point of view - that's it. R*pe, corporal punishment, wars, forced prostitution, concubines, premature deaths, illnesses, child labor, beggars and cruelty of all kinds used to be good friends to the human mankind up to the declaration of human rights in 1945. It is not even 80 years since that now, and pretending that those things didn't exist... more>> is not wise. One has to accept it, or leave it and read books in modern settings because the sensitive modern mind may not contain those themes too well. But in that case, what makes xianxia danmei so popular in the West, apart from the looks of the men?;) <<less

It is a sweet story starting with indifference, coldness and negligence and ending in warmth, doting and love. I would recommend it to anybody who wants to get a heart warming reading with no intellectual benefit.

My only three complaints are that

    1. The relationship is a bit artificial (changes in attitudes are abrupt and have no reasons) and a bit silly - but it is not a psychological paper, so for a light novel it's OK.
Spoiler

However, a 28-years old lecherous male having s*x barely 2 times a month and begging for it every time looks too much.

[collapse]

2. The tsundere's attitude is too strict. You can't help but start thinking this family have got some problems in their love life, they should see a consultant or somebody. Sometimes it's painful to read about another refusal in bed.

3. While the ML turns completely from an everything-crushing iceberg into a henpecked shy husband who needs no s*x, no power anymore, just let the wifey not beat him too often, the mute MC never becomes more understanding at all and even gets quite b*tchy. I don't like him in the end. I mean the husband should

change some of his wrong ways but he is what he is in the end of a day, he can't be another man, you should accept some of his features even if you think they are no good enough.

The ML is given as an example of an unruly selfish bully but actually the shy MC should learn from him how to be thoughtful, tolerant and understanding towards your mate.

If you can't read excessively brainless, torturous story that abuses MC left and right with hateful villains and slag ML like me and just want to read the fluff, read chapter 1 to 40-ish, skip forward to about chapter 170 because those chapters in-between were nightmarishly infuriating and I meant it.

Now, to the bare plot points of the story before the fluff starts so you don't get lost
Spoiler
    • MC was a mute servant from the Shen family who replaced the real daughter on the wedding. MC and his mother were from Yunmeng, where the men can get pregnant with a special pill and had a custom to engrave the name of one's beloved on a red bean sealed in a jade dice.
    • He was delivered to ML who quickly favored him for his beauty that made the princess consort abhored MC
    • Torture and scheming began, involving the emperor to the point that they had to stay a night in the cave because of the princess
    • ML began disfavoring MC and took a prostitute although it's apparently a play pretend, the prostitute liked MC's servant
    • MC's mother was taken by the emperor, misunderstanding galore until she was killed by the emperor
    • Everyhing fell and the ML started a mutiny, finally occopying the palace
    • ML took the real Shen daughter as concubine to stimulate MC so with his low self-confidence and wishing to leave ML, MC took a poison to su*cide, although it turned out to be suspended death animation pill
    • ML regretted everything and chasing wife to crematorium began but the MC's still indifferent
    • ML eventually disguised himself as a dark guard to stay by MC's side
    • MC began to know about his special body from the Chu family, second ML introduced but they didn't progress much
      [collapse]
This novel is kinda similar to The Blind Concubine, so I couldn't bear to read much about the first part of the story before the fluff began because the MC was a weak, fragile thing shaped by the era they lived in. He was no transmigrator or someone who have a golden finger to change his destiny, he was just someone from the lowest caste who unfortunately happened to have a beautiful face and that made it a disaster.

I meant it. The first part of the story might be a drop point for you so I'm here to spoiler say that the second part is better.

The ML might not be a perfect guy but his remorse after he truly fell for ML was real.

This is all personal opinion but,

As much as I love historical BLs, I couldn't read any further. The MC is so weak and frail, and I mostly don't have a problem with that. However, the ML is utterly irredeemable. I know that the other reviews do mention how it's set in ancient times and the tags, but I still could not find it satisfying. I usually do enjoy tragedy quite a lot, but I really couldn't read any further.

Spoiler

The ML just misunderstands everything, and it really would have all been solved if the MC just did the hand gestures instead of trying to get paper, won't the whole cheating misunderstanding be resolved? The ML does seem to understand those gestures. Idk- it just seems so simple to solve?

[collapse]

I will say that the plot was okay, it was a really good pacing.

I did see some other reviews saying that it gets better or smt, but I can't continue with this. Might pick it up later if I'm really desperate- <<less

I surprisingly really liked this novel! I’ve been reading the manhua so even if the translation isn’t that far I have read a bit farther.

I initially though the MC would just be another pretty faced doormat for all the abuse to happen too, but he’s probably the most realistic character out of the bunch. Yes he is very meek and naive, but it makes sense because of his upbringing. And even more surprisingly he has a whole character arc where he matures and fully rejects the ML!!

I didn’t mind the... more>> ML. He’s a pretty stereotypical overpowering gong type and can sometimes feel kind of bland, but it’s not bad enough to be distracting. I actually do understand why the MC falls in love with him initially even if he’s abusive, but it’s really satisfying to see him get his comeuppance and have to work for the MC’s affection.

I absolutely loved the drama. I am someone who loves tragedy and heartbreak to this was perfect for me.
Spoiler

The scene where the ML breaks the red bean dice and the MC try’s to speak even though he’s mute and it just comes out as wails, had me in tears. It’s probably my favorite part of the whole novel.

[collapse]

If you don’t like tragedy or abuse I’d 100% steer clear, but if you’re like me and love to see characters destroy each other emotionally and physically then this is the novel for you! <<less

This story does contain sensitive material and isn’t a healthy relationship. On saying that, all appropriate tags are used and the audience has been warned.

I actually really really like this. I’m normally so soft hearted that I can’t stand abuse, but something about this story makes me quite like it. I feel like all the bullying that the main character is receiving will only make it that much sweeter when he finally gets his happy ending. The male lead is ruthless, but there are signs of him warming up and... more>> I’m just so ready for him to become soft as tofu for his “wife”.

The writing is also so smooth and easy to read. This has just been a really enjoyable story. <<less

okay, to be honest I first read its manhua and I totally love it, even though it has a slow update in it. I understand when you guys don't like it when it contains r*pe, but that's the reason why the tags exists. If you read the tags and saw something that makes you uncomfortable then click out of it.

This is actually a sad novel because of the MLs wife, she's a total stuck up b*tch, and there are events that made me feel like my heart is going to... more>> break.

Spoiler

at the later parts the ML would be softening to our MC. If you read the manhua then you would be seeing why I gave this novel 5 stars.

I tumbled upon a manhua with gorgeous art. The story is interesting, with a lecherous prince and a mute MC. Just when I was wondering how a novel would portray a mute character, I discovered that that manhua has a novel. I'm so happy and excited but I'm waiting for more chapters before reading ?

I found this story because of the yandere tag. Though I didn't continue with the story because it made me hate hate hate it so much, I do appreciate how well-written it is. Kudos to the wonderful author and thank you to the translators.

Let me just state, first of all, the tags matter. Please know that this story isn't for the weak-minded (which unfortunately includes me hehe). Beware of all the red flags waving waving here 🚩🚩🚩. I promise you'll hate almost everyone in the story.

I dropped out too early... more>> because I think the MC will probably suffer for most of the novel, which is the main reason I didn't like it. I tend to read from the MC's POV and who would like someone hurting them? The MC is a weirdo, I'm not. (Says the weirdo who found this through the yandere tag😌😏)

Anyway, MC is a mute s*ave who was sheltered most of his life. Sheltered as in hidden from everyone because he's so beautiful, he causes conflict to those around him. So he's not educated, very obedient, and basically, has no mind of his own. He's the kind of MC bottom I'd like in other yandere stories because he's the kind of blank slate that can have a huge self-improvement along the way. ML is a typical bloodthirsty war general in ancient times. He's lustful, hurts others, and doesn't know how to love. He shows it in the form of hardcore s*x and violence. The Princess Consort, his main wife mind you, also hurts MC, then only when the MC is already hurt will he pop up to "save" the damsel.

(I acknowledge the fact that the Princess is his main wife. Women already have too low of a status in ancient times, even as a princess, so she has little say with her husband's infidelity. Also, ancient times was when human lives didn't matter and where status was the most important. I found the action of her hurting MC justifiable considering her status and the background of the story.)

Though that doesn't mean I can cope with the abuse. This was my first try at a historical yandere ML with an actual lowborn MC, I can say I didn't like it. I was expecting abuse but not this dog-blooded. Reading other reviews made me go wow they actually managed to continue reading. Proud of your powerful minds, hopefully I get some of this strength for future stories I'll encounter.

I probably won't go back to reading this story until far into the future so I'll leave this review to mark this story with a big warning ⚠️⚠️⚠️ to myself and fellow readers. <<less

This novel is finished but I think the author dropped out the extras.

I liked the main couple. I could endure the blood dog topic and think that "it's normal, MC was a s*ave all his life. ML was a obsessed with s*x cold general all his life". But the second couple was too toxic for myself, if anyone likes it obviously it's ok but I couldn't endure it.

But the extras fuc*ed up- (first spoiler explaining the extras, second spoiler my opinion)

Spoiler

The main couple had a child (gong) and the second adopted one (shou) when he was two, he had a trauma. They go to the same school and the shou is bullied by some brats, then the gong appears and he defends him. It'd be cute and all that jazz, except for that they're five-seven years old and the gong bullies him possessively. He even obligated the shou to kiss him or he'd abandon a little dog that the shou liked.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I couldn't afford it because they were a five yo child and a seven yo child and the author put them in that way. They seems teenagers, specially the 5yo boy (gong). He's just like his father (first ML), it'd be """funny""" if he's like him ok, but not being five yo. I felt the extras like fill. Sorry for people who liked them but they were so unrealistic. But hey, if you like blood dog, it's a perfect fanservice. Maybe I'd have enjoyed them if I'd like this topic but I'm not really fan of scumbag gong/shou and easily forgiven.

[collapse]

Main couple- scumbag gong, "fragile" shou

Second couple- obsessed gong, scumbag shou

Third couple- dumb gong, white lotus shou <<less

So I was reading both the novel and manhua, Manhua's name is The silent concubine. Drawing style was nice but decided to read the novel instead. (I think Manhua version was better.) But dropped the novel around Ch170.

It has many tropes that I like. Like wife chasing crematorium, Ancient China? Yes, I love my boys with long black hair. It has rich, overbearing strong ML. But then he also has many things that I hate.

If you love this kind of husband abusing the wife story, this is it.

I actually... more>> finished reading the sequel Silent lover 2, ML is the son of main couples. There Emperor (ML of silent lover) was disappointing. Their son is shit, too s*upid. His life is controlled by a concubine. No idea what happened to MC. He didn't appear on Silent lover 2.

I actually wanted to give 3.5 stars to both books, because don't like both MCs. Of course MLs are human tr*sh, worst people ever but I already know that from the tags. But MC, they are both doormats, weaker than I expected. One thing I realized not only in the novel, but in real life is I hate people with doormat personality. Everyone steps over them and it's because they allow it. It's just, I can't relate to them at all. I was always someone hot headed, I always fought with boys and my class bullies. I threw stones and cracked their head. I don't allow anyone to talk sh*t about me or my friends. I directly confront right then and there. I don't give a F about consequences.

So I get very angry when I read about meek, weak crybaby characters be it male or female. So I prefer novels with strong MC. In wife chasing crematoriums, MCs are usually mentally strong, or just stronger transferred soul. So this novels were not really my taste. I can withstand tr*shy ML, they are just side characters in the end. I still can enjoy those books, but unlikable MC is hard to handle.

But this book is really good if you're into that kind of MC. <<less
