Only a few chapters in, but so far it seems really interesting! The MC is a programmer who transmigrated into a cultivation world. Then he transmigrates? Into himself 1000 years in the future, going from a young person who had to struggle to get basic cultivation resources to an incredibly powerful sect leader with no memory of what happened in between.

4 Stars so far but it has potential for more.

Sect Leader is Under Great Pressure is truly a transmigration novel. The introduction of modern concepts into an ancient society is prominent and crucial for the story.

PLOT

We follow our MC as he believes he has transmigrated twice. Once from modern times to ancient cultivation world, and again to in that same world but in the future. It’s interesting to see MC try to unravel the mysteries of the past as he struggles to interact with people that already know... more>> him. The romance is a bit slow but seems to be building to a very deep one relevant to the plot.

Spoiler

MC did not transmigrate twice. He has amnesia, a condition he inflicted onto himself. Also, he left himself warnings to not recover his memories as it is for the best. He eventually puts the matter aside as he believes in himself, but the past is uncovering itself.

[collapse]

CHARACTERS

MC - He’s the Sect Leader of a powerful clan and is an overall powerful character. However, being from the past our MC struggles to acclimate to his new rise in stature. He described his situation as “a novice playing on a veteran’s account.”

Spoiler

MC is super powerful and feared by even those that care for him. He’s ambivalent because the future him is much colder than the current him. There’s a scene where MC panics about someone finding out he has amnesia. When talking to a fragment or something of his loss memories, it basically told him it doesn’t matter because no one should dare question him. This man is powerful and confident. Future him also basically revolutionized the world leading to being not only feared but respected creating this pressure on our MC.

[collapse]

The disciple - from a good family. Based on what I read like lower nobles or something. Idk. Very diligent. Worships the sect leader. Loyal to the sect.

Spoiler

Might be the ML. I’m guessing from tags. MC has only 1 disciple. MC seems to be involved with a ghost (was called a leftover of a strong obsession) and he might be the reincarnation. Idk. Anyway, his shadow definitely likes MC.

[collapse]

The original protagonist - immature. Got crazy plot amour. Delusional (?). Annoying. Weirdly entitled.

Spoiler

He was literally a servant but wants everyone to respect him. I would understand as equals but he wants to be treated by his peers like he’s better, and by century old masters like equals. Wild crazy. All because MC daughter told him he was talented. Like ??? She said talented not Jesus. I think he’s being set up to be a villain but he’s mostly annoying

[collapse]

The daughter - desperate for her father’s love. Just wants him to spend time with her.

Spoiler

MC considered that he adopted her because he’s always been gay in all his lives and forms, but dismissed the thought because they look very similar. He doesn’t understand why his future self was so cold to her. I think it was related to his cultivation method. He wants to make up for it but doesn’t know how to connect with her.

[collapse]

MC’s shidi and shimei - all very loyal. Respects, fears, and love MC. Flexes on his daughter about the past. I think they were also the one to raise Ji Mingyun.

Spoiler

Apparently MC raised them. He took good care of them and was described to have loved children before he became cold. They wanna hold his hand. Lol.

[collapse]

Sect Members - the sect is very solid and unified. Members still contact their family. Some families all cultivate and live in the sect. Reveres the sect leader and want to bask in his energy. Will buy something he touched. The disciples care for one another despite being competitive against one another. There seems to be some inner politics but it never crosses a line.

Spoiler

in the secret realm they put aside their competitiveness and worked very well together to survive. The good nature of the sect stems from the leader again putting pressure on MC

[collapse]

PROS

good plot, interesting character cast, and MC is likeable.

CONS

can be wordy and you may get confused at times, especially about the identity of some side characters. <<less

One thing's for sure: this novel is a pain in the ass to MTL (lol). God damn.

Okay, now that I've got that out of the way, I'm liking the novel so far. Our MC transmigrates twice (or does he?), first as a lowly peasant who has just started cultivating and then as the Sect Leader of a flourishing sect centuries later. The new him is powerful, having gained the respect of the world with his innovations and techniques (all derived from his life in the modern world) but the problem... more>> is he can't remember anything that's happened to him in that time. The juniors who look up to him because he took them under his wing during a period of strife, a daughter who wants nothing but his affection, he doesn't have any of that in his memories.

The MC is a pretty fun guy, unintentionally funny and slightly nerdy. He loves kids and seems to be generally kind, though socially awkward. As for the ML, well. He hasn't shown up yet, as of chapter 30, but I have a faint inkling that it may be -

Spoiler

- so at one point the MC's life (during the memory loss period) he goes around and starts collecting children to teach. One such child (Li... something I forgot) turns out to have died. I suspect that he's not actually dead or that he may have come back to life in some form, and that he's the lingering obsession that's more or less "haunting" the MC (this ain't my first rodeo in the genre, can you tell?) but we'll see.

[collapse]

There's a big emphasis on side characters, and we actually spend a decent portion of the story in other perspectives. First is Feng Qingxiu, a discipline with a promising future (who has the funniest interactions with the MC lmfao), next is Ye Han, a s*ave who has recently joined the sect and is a chuunibyou/genius (has a bone to pick with Feng Qingxiu, who "tolerates" him) -

Spoiler

- I have suspect a side CP.... which is backed up by an author's note.... but again I'm not that far into the novel yet so -

[collapse]

- and Ji Mingyu, MC's daughter (he isn't straight though we don't know what happened). There are other, new, "important" side characters introduced in future MTL chapters but I don't feel confident speaking about them, so let's just wait and see. On that note, I will also be waiting for the translations, because as I mentioned earlier, this MTL is a pain. Interesting story so far though, right now it's a solid 4.0/5.0 stars. <<less

congratulations on finding this hidden gem. Best web novel I've ever read. I'm native Chinese speaker just here to recommend it to anyone who likes master x disciple, subversion of classic tropes, face slapping, over-powered MC, tragic back story and happy ending. You will not regret if you read it.

Everything is written very concisely and if you continue reading there will be an explanation. (10-100chapters later) Every character has a life, a goal, and a personality. No side characters is simply used as a plot device. Even the "villains". Quote... more>> mark because no actual villains in this story just people on different sides with different goals. Also all characters grow and change. No one is as simple as they first looked.

I will end by saying I want to be born to kunlai in my next life. It's the courage, the companionship, the strive for a better life and never giving up that I admire. Like grass on a plane field wild fires can never wipe them out once the soft wind of spring begins to blow they would strive and grow again.

Spoiler

They met each other at their lowest, hardship only known to the two of them. But fate was cruel. It didn't sway for them. It was not for luck but for hard work they are able to meet again at their best. A chance to start anew, to love each other with all the best things they have. This is what they both deserves.

also they are good parents. Nothing s*upid like being jealous of the child.

It's so freaking good. If you think you know what's happening, just wait a few more chapters lol. I had no patience to mtl; historical/wuxia novels are so hard to understand.

There's so much worldbuilding and every time you think you know what's happening another mystery pops up. The plot isn't slow and is very gripping.

Really love this novel 😻.

Haha even the villains are reluctant to attack the sect as they are afraid of being cut off of their internet supply.

One way to describe the sect members : people with ADHD. Unlike other cultivation novels, there are no useless members here, only geniuses are admitted here. You either work or get out of the sect.

The wtiting style is a bit messy and confusing, but the world building is awesome

On other note - ji mingyu needs more screen time !

The story progressed like a true cultivation story with a lot of casts, packed world-building/ background story, and trivial cultivation plots. It'll very draggy if you aren't prepared for that.

The author and translator treat readers like we're already familiar with cultivation term and concepts. They aren't pinyin, but I still wish there are more details about which concept the author means because cultivation story can use diverse terms or use same terms but slightly different concepts *sigh* For example the concept of demon, inner demon, and shadow seems a... more>> bit different than other story, and they're very important. Etc etc.

Maybe it's because the author is not good at revealing the msytery bit by bit. They also tend to try to write mysteriously when they supposed to make it clear/obvious. Anyway they seems to expect the reader to just get it, then they continue to reveal next mystery or the plot in similar way. You might not feel this way, but you'll get a lot of confused by the detail such as (as of c38) :

MC's situation:

Spoiler

He was around 24 YO programmer who seemed to transmigrate to his friend's stallion novel (or perhaps only the name of the sect is the same). But he transmigrated around 1000 years earlier. Rather than transmigrating, it seemed he was reincarnated into a baby born in that world and lived there for 16 years (my guess based on his monologue). Then he woke up one day and lost around 1000 years worth of memory. The gap is so big he feels like he transmigrated twice, but in fact he isn't. And he knows that.

[collapse]

ML's identity & background:

Spoiler

ML is the reincarnation of the first batch of disciple of the sect. However he was also a lineage of royal family (possibly a direct prince), but at that time he was in difficult position and cannot stay in the capital (perhaps that's why he disguised himself and enter the sect). Past!MC and past!ML became very close and it seemed MC indulged and trusted him a lot. But, at that time, the royal family and the orthodox cultivation world were at odd with each other. It seemed Past!ML's position in royal family is actually high and as a result, he has to do something for the royal family (or perhaps for his position). He betrayed the sect and past!MC (if I'm not wrong he also killed a sect disciple that is precious to MC). So past!MC killed him with his own sword. Fortunately past!ML has found a complete set of reincarnation scroll/book (three of them) and managed to reincarnate safely into a human (unlike some other royals who used incomplete scroll and reincarnate into animal instead). Because he was a big villain, his reincarnated self was born with a demonic soul (his soul is demonic), has bad luck, and has a strange shadow following him everywhere (perhaps it's the form of karma?). He became a disciple of the sect, then became MC's direct disciple. Of couse the current ML didn't remember any of this.

I really like that the current time characters and the MC don't care about his current condition and don't bother to find out who he was in the past. MC with his memory might care a lot though, along with big villains that will show up in the story (because of the scroll, etc). As for now there is no explanation why ML reincarnate himself. But who wouldn't want to live again?

[collapse]

MC's daughter:

Spoiler

is not biological, but her birth bring some sort of trauma to the past!MC. I suspect she is the AI that MC create hence physical similarities.

[collapse]

You also got confused by the casts, not because there're many of them but because their enterance or re-entereance to the scene is not well written

Spoiler

When already-introduced characters enter the scene, the way it's written is like a new character. I was often confused why they were written mysteriously when the author should've made them obvious? Is it actually a new character??? But they're actually important side characters that the MC have met twice. Etc.

[collapse]

    • Some important conversations flow and scenes are also a bit confusing. I didn't realize that someone already leaving the scene, and the one staying already have an important (secret) conversation with another new arrival. Etc etc.
    • Some flow of times is also strange, I rather ignore it and just stick with the order of events.
There're a lot of details I miss which lost in the many backgrounds story/flashbacks and confusing writing style at times. And I already read with the attitude that every details will become important later. But my concentrating skill is not good to begin with ORZ

About the small villains so far:

Spoiler

They have a troupe of MC of stallion novel such as tragic background story and golden finger (can be talent or artifact, etc) and they try to progress their life like a stallion protagonist (covet the sect leader's daughter, artefact, etc). It is as described in the description. But unlike in the description, the MC aren't aware of them (yet). These protag wannabe are canon fooder in reader eyes, but not worth mentioning in MC's world. It seems they'll appear one after another. So far, they are not transmigrator.

[collapse]

These small villains feel like a tidbit to make the story more interesting. You'll feel bored reading them, but there are actually connection to big villain, and some important plots will progress with them. I can just feel it.

Anyway, these are what I 'detest' about the story, as for what I liked, well I like the world building and the cultivation story so far (I didn't come for romance). The characters are not flat and likeable although they cannot squeeze in your list of fav characters. I like the msytery, the tags, and there are no nonsense gropey scene or cringey fluff that like to appear in BL story. It's worth my time reading. Beside I know the dogblood and romance will come later, it's a long story after all.

I didn't read any spoiler when

writw this. I don't know how to rate this, but at least I will take one star because the writing style sometimes confusing and messed up with a lot of important details. <<less

This is such a good and wholesome read!

I love the humor of the author, and the characters were truly well written. I like that the author doesn't abandon previously mentioned characters, and that they continue to appear and contribute to the plot progression. Another thing that I absolutely loved is how the author incorporated modern concepts into the Xianxia setting (e.g. Internet, programming, mathematics) ! It's so cleverly done, and doesn't feel forced.

Even though it's a Xianxia novel, it's quite calming to read. This is because the MC, despite his... more>> initial panic and confusion after discovering his amnesia, exudes such a calm and reliable aura that somehow makes you think that everything will be alright! I liked that he kept his focus on the present rather than trying to recover the past, which made the flashbacks to his very tragic past not too depressing (I still may have shed a tear or two 🥲).

The ML and his interactions with all the other characters were hilarious and very much comical. I have lost count of the times I actually blurted out laughing! Actually, the relationships among the other Kunlai disciples were really interesting. I remember being shocked at who ended up with whom, but then realizing that it all made sense.

Overall, such a great novel!! I just wished the author expounded more at the end, since I still have some questions that weren't really answered. <<less
