He Yu and Fu Chenshan were childhood friends, and He Yu had a crush on Fu Chenshan from junior high until they started working together. After years of asking for help but not receiving it, the young man who got into trouble became impetuous and chose to spend three years in prison to take the place of Fu Chenshan.

He Yu lost his closest relatives in prison and was repeatedly bullied, forcing him to choose to cling to Qiao Mudong for a better life. He realized how to be sorry at that point, but there was no way out.

Three years later, he was released. Fu Chenshan was pleased with his life and had a lovely woman by his side. He Yu’s passion seemed to have devolved into a farce at the time. He had planned a route of retreat from a difficult situation, but he unexpectedly ran into Qiao Mudong again…

One sentence introduction: This story is about changing the broken gong.

Even without seeing their life in prison, the story is still very heavy and kind of dark. MC/ML don't take too long to work out their feelings but it seems like they keep getting things thrown their way. Sure it has comedic undertones but the whole time it left a bittersweet melancholic feeling. I couldn't stand it after ch37, I skipped around to reach the end. The Fu guy is so goddamn infuriating too, his appearances at the beginning was just uncomfortable at first but the more I see him... more>> the more disgusted I feel. <<less

Hello, this is KEIGHTY and I'm the current translator of Route Of Retreat! I decided to finally drop my own review of this novel. 1v1. Power couple. It's not one-sided. They value each other just as much, mutual doting. "Rabbit that bites when provoked" shou MC × Hot, straightforward (vulgar, even), strong, and rich gong ML who "had a temper of a young master and a character of a gangster". Gong appears around Chapter 10, so let's be patient, okay?

Personally, I really like this one, especially the characters. The comedic undertone is great. I also love their couple dynamics so much (which amusingly consists of physical and verbal fights, but they still end up in bed cuddling together gently XP). Gong might come up as someone who is playful, impatient, and easily annoyed, so he's quite intense sometimes. Anyway, He Yu is there to calm him down. He had Qiao Mudong on a leash, don't worry.
Spoiler

Content Warning: So far, there are 'brief' mentions of sensitive past events such as s*xual assault, non cons, dub cons, deaths (su*cides and accidents), and other mature themes that is to be read at your own discretion. Qiao Mudong once touched He Yu back in prison (although it's just a sentence long and wasn't explicitly narrated in the main text. However, it was written in the prison extras). Unfortunately, something like that happened between the two of them :' (but Qiao Mudong at that time wasn't the same as the Qiao Mudong that he is right now.

[collapse]

The current Qiao Mudong is very protective and cautious of He Yu, and he sometimes makes He Yu laugh which no one else could. They're actually sweet and casual with each other.

For me, they're very unique. The obvious difference between them somehow balanced out their energies. Hoping y'all would still be with them 'til the end. This is a story about fixing and finding warmth in each other. No retranslating, reposting, or making offline copies of my translation. Thank you.

This novel is so chaotic, and it's amazing. MC and ML's relationship is half bickering, half s*xual tension, and though it's unclear at the start what they are to each other, they have so much chemistry together. There's never a boring moment with their constant back and forth, but they also understand each other and know when to stop before taking things too far.

The mystery of MC's situation at the start of the novel is quite engaging, and once ML is introduced in chapter 10 I really just couldn't stop... more>> laughing at their antics together. There's no non-con in the novel itself, but mild TW for the reference that their first time in prison is not consensual. It's clearly not a moment that MC thinks about with any amount of trauma, but just to be aware of.

I do really love the ML, with his wild and unrestrained personality. He tends to think with his fists first and can be a bit aggressive, but he's surprisingly tolerant of MC and doesn't take advantage or push for s*x if MC really isn't feeling it. I feel like with anyone else, he'd be a bit much, but MC is able to understand his moods and tame the beast, so to speak.

Highly, highly recommend! Also just a kudos to the translator for doing such a great job with the translation, I really enjoyed reading this one. <<less

I really like the couple in this novel. I took it up because of the recommendation of the translator KEIGHTY and their description of the couple. Description was spot on and I also really loved them, the main couple has an antagonistic but loving relationship and the ML in particular is very chaotic. I really liked how the author allowed the characters to discover more details rather than explaining them in a big exposition dump. The pacing and the writing of the characters was especially good and I'm definitely putting... more>> it on my list to read again! <<less

Tbh it’s only been a few days since I finished the main part, but my memory so bad that I can barely remember that I wanted to give it a good review bc it deserved it

(ू˃̣̣̣̣̣̣︿˂̣̣̣̣̣̣ ू)

Up front: I’m sometimes not well measured, so not sure if my comment will have spoilers or not... So uhm... just BIG SPOILER WARNING I guess... read at your own discretion??

ok:
I LOVE MC and MLs Chemistry... !!! ML can be a little annoying at the beginning bc of the bad choice of words, but he’s sometimes just a big child who doesn’t acknowledge his feelings at first haha definitely better than his ex-crush Fu Chenshan, or rather hm... ML grew up the way, that he can prioritize MC while Chenshan kind of has the personality of... well he has to take his identity into account so as not to destroy his current position, while ML doesn’t give a sht, which is what MC probs needs after those three years. I didn’t read the extras, so I’m not sure about what happened in prison, but probably nothing tooo extreme.
Tbh at first, I was also mad at Chenshan and what he gained and all at the cost of MC and his loved ones... but at the same time, if one day the truth was revealed, wouldn’t that make MCs sacrifices for naught? Whatever happens, it won’t bring his mom back to life... it won’t change that he missed three years of his life, that he has suffered in prison, etc. So I liked what the author did there :) even though some may have not been satisfied

Hm, I liked the relationship between MC and Chenshan, like, how MC treats him after that? MC not voicing his thoughts? Idk why... or rather that I liked it, I just felt wrong, when at the end
Spoiler

with ML falsely accused, he lashes out on Chenshan who didn’t do it, and tells him how he hates him and stuff or smth, that he believes Chenshan would be the kind of guy to falsely accuse ML... Idk, I just kind of felt like it didn’t him, or their relationship... yes Chenshan housed MCs Love for him but... idk on the other hand side, MC did. know him for a long time?? Idk maybe I just liked it when there was a thin paper between them which no one wanted to rip, to stay superficially friendly? That in some way hurts more than openly angry maybe?

[collapse]

anyways, other than that, love it haha I know I commented a lot of Chenshan, but idk, he was bad but also kind of really well written?? I didn’t comment on MC and ML bc they were just perfect for each other after all that :)) love them and their interactions hehe the first appearance of ML suddenly felt like (as a reader) as if he brought color into MCs bleak future!! Like, it just suddenly lightened up, the story!

anyways, do give it a try! There is, as far as I remember no non-con in the story, with maybe mentions of it in the prison time?? But ML pays attention that MC is not hurt and will feel good too~

Great novel!!!! Thank you for picking this up and translating it so amazingly!!! Also thank you for the review, or I may have not started reading it!!! <3
