Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.Su Xue, a woman in her mid 20s, is struggling both in paying rent and finding her path in life. Her latest stint has her trying to become a popular League of Legends streamer, though to poor results. One day, she is interrupted in the middle of a livestream by a surprise visit from her landlady. She is informed that she will be having a new roommate. The landlady’s nephew, Lin Feng, a 18 year old boy who has just transferred over to Shanghai for his last year of high school.
Though initially opposed to it, Su Xue reluctantly agrees to the arrangement. She learns that the two share a common interest—League of Legends—and that he’s really amazing at the game. Lin Feng also reveals to her he wishes to become the best professional League of Legends player in the world.
The next day. Lin Feng attends his first day of school as a transfer student at High School 13. He meets Ouyang and Yang Fan, and the trio find a common passion in League of Legends. Lin Feng is then introduced to Ren Rou, the president of the esports club with a fiery personality, and Tang Bingyao, a quiet bookworm with a love for money and a surprising talent for the game.
A little about Lin Feng’s past is revealed. He was a once pro player, the youngest in history and a contender for the best player in the world. Until the finals of the Season 1 World Championship. There, he lost to his arch-rival, an equally brilliant Korean youth. That was the peak of his career, and also the turning point in his life. He stepped down from his team and disappeared from competitive play altogether. Now, after a four year long hiatus, he aims to make a comeback
Over the next couple of weeks, Lin Feng learns about the upcoming Shanghai 16 School Tournament, and that his school’s esports club had performed especially poorly the previous year. He agrees to coach the club’s team and help them win the first place trophy this year. And so, he starts the members of the club out on an intense training bootcamp.
Meanwhile, the Season 5 League of Legends World Championship is taking place at around the same time. Tian Tian, one of Lin Feng’s former teammates and best friend, is on one of the Chinese teams playing at Worlds. After a poor showing, he is on the verge of a mental breakdown. Lin Feng witnesses everything in a viewing party with the esports club members and becomes worried.
On the day of the Shanghai 16 School tournament, Lin Feng reunites with Tian Tian on the phone. He tells Tian Tian he’s going to return to the professional scene, that he’s making a new team and plans to invite him. But Tian Tian has to vow not to give up at Worlds and keep winning. Tian Tian agrees, and Lin Feng promises he’ll fight alongside him. Lin Feng then heads into his match with renewed resolve, to climb from the bottom all the way back to the top, and overcome the rival that defeated him so many years ago.

Not the shoujo/josei novels that seem to be popular these days. You know the kind... "A Slight Smile", "Why Not Soar", etc. Lotsa reviews written before me, so I'll just summarize... whether you enjoy it probably relies on the following: (1) Do you play League of Legends?
Hyper-detailed descriptions of sometimes rather normal plays, but entertaining nonetheless. Note that author makes absolutely no effort to describe League of Legends game mechanics.
If you don't play it, you'll either end up skimming through the "action", or have no idea why it's a good play, or why millions of annoying fan-boys watching the MC keep raving about it. (2) Are you ok with translators taking lots of liberties?
The translators are definitely a riot, but there's a lot of content they've inserted that clearly aren't from the author. While it's a good laugh for western audiences, it may be much harder for Asian audiences to be immersed in the novel. Ends up being a western take on an asian novel. (3) Do you enjoy shounen MCs with stunted EQ?
This is my major gripe with the novel. MC is 19 (not 18 since he's supposed to be a year older). But he acts like a 12-yr old with constant chuunibyou references and incredibly low-EQ. He is incredibly supportive of his friends, being able to tr*sh opponents and taunt trolls. But yet he gets incredibly weepy over past experiences and relationships, to the point that he can't even properly communicate to people close to him about why he's sad. This disconnect is just weird. If you're using One Piece as a comparison, just keep in mind Luffy was 17 years old, BEFORE the time-skip. And that's a hyper-specific shounen manga. Even MC's background story doesn't make any sense.
(1) MC was too young during his eSports career (14? 15?). Yet, even after climbing to the top, carrying and being an inspiration to his team, encouraging them despite the pressure, he quit the eSports scene after making one mistake in the finals, took early retirement and went into hiding. Huh?
(2) Then MC somehow "found himself" over the course of the next 4 years, and now has strong aspirations to rise to the top again, even trying to build his own team. Huh??
(3) BUT, he is ashamed of meeting his former teammates, and has to be repeatedly encouraged to contact them. Even though it's obvious he'll have to meet them again if he tries to climb to the top. HUH???
(1) - (2) - (3) do not compute at all.
Just emphasizes that MC is not just a shounen-esque character, but an emotionally stunted and dissociative character. Since it just doesn't make any sense.
1. The novel has a dedicated group publishing the translator who are funny and brings life to the novel.
2. Despite the weakness in characters, they have a distinct Chinese character type and are generally a guilty pleasure type of characters for Chinese Novel readers.
3. If you join the discord, you can make fun of the group translating it at no additional cost!
But most importantly, the story doesn't go too deep into the gameplay but still maintain knowledge about old seasons of league so if you want to experience what league was like before your current era then this might just be the place for you. Story : The plot is kind of weak with lack of motivation and character motivation seems a bit one note.
For example, Kings Avatar started out with a completely capable pro who has been cheated out of his achievements by a greedy corporation.
In Rise, the characters seem to be in place randomly without any sense of urgency or fate even though it is somewhat implied that the main character began his journey playing again at the right place and right time.
In both stories, the main characters were contenders for consideration as the best in the entire scene at one point however Kings Avatar had more opportunities for the main character to shine (in 1v1 and quick combat matches) whereas League is such a team orientated game.
Contrary to the negative reviews, I feel like the Main Character in Rise can potentially maintain his challenger level because 1. He's shown knowledge in studying the meta, 2. His macros are still top tier, 3. Micro knowledge should still be prominent, and 4. Most importantly, we haven't been shown him against challengers except once where they hadn't even gone out of the laning phrase.
(TL:DR it feels like the main character's lack of clear headedness seem to make the issue of how lucky and skilled he is unlikable because he ended up in a positive position although he shouldn't have been able to without putting in real effort.) Characters: Characters are likable, but they just don't feel real.
They have weaknesses and are vulnerable, but lack clear cut personality and motivation.
They can be seen as the cardboard cutout happy go lucky dense main character, the fat anxious best friend, lancer/cold female friend, the big sister support character, male friend A, male friend B, and student president.
This actually works since stereotypes enable better idea flow and character development, but each of them doesn't feel real but likable. World building: The depth in the actual world is missing, but it kinda makes sense because this world is just real life a few years ago with slight changes.
I didn't read any description of the story before diving into it. And oh boy that stuff is like crack. Once you start reading it you can't stop with it!
True, the translation team did edit it. But tbh it's way more enjoyable this way! If it was like the raws I would have quit after 5 chapters or so. Definitely recommended for: Gamers, people with an interest in games, eSport fans (!), fans of competitions and all of those who just want something different for a change! Really entertaining until now :)
