Su Xue, a woman in her mid 20s, is struggling both in paying rent and finding her path in life. Her latest stint has her trying to become a popular League of Legends streamer, though to poor results. One day, she is interrupted in the middle of a livestream by a surprise visit from her landlady. She is informed that she will be having a new roommate. The landlady’s nephew, Lin Feng, a 18 year old boy who has just transferred over to Shanghai for his last year of high school.

Though initially opposed to it, Su Xue reluctantly agrees to the arrangement. She learns that the two share a common interest—League of Legends—and that he’s really amazing at the game. Lin Feng also reveals to her he wishes to become the best professional League of Legends player in the world.

The next day. Lin Feng attends his first day of school as a transfer student at High School 13. He meets Ouyang and Yang Fan, and the trio find a common passion in League of Legends. Lin Feng is then introduced to Ren Rou, the president of the esports club with a fiery personality, and Tang Bingyao, a quiet bookworm with a love for money and a surprising talent for the game.

A little about Lin Feng’s past is revealed. He was a once pro player, the youngest in history and a contender for the best player in the world. Until the finals of the Season 1 World Championship. There, he lost to his arch-rival, an equally brilliant Korean youth. That was the peak of his career, and also the turning point in his life. He stepped down from his team and disappeared from competitive play altogether. Now, after a four year long hiatus, he aims to make a comeback

Over the next couple of weeks, Lin Feng learns about the upcoming Shanghai 16 School Tournament, and that his school’s esports club had performed especially poorly the previous year. He agrees to coach the club’s team and help them win the first place trophy this year. And so, he starts the members of the club out on an intense training bootcamp.

Meanwhile, the Season 5 League of Legends World Championship is taking place at around the same time. Tian Tian, one of Lin Feng’s former teammates and best friend, is on one of the Chinese teams playing at Worlds. After a poor showing, he is on the verge of a mental breakdown. Lin Feng witnesses everything in a viewing party with the esports club members and becomes worried.

On the day of the Shanghai 16 School tournament, Lin Feng reunites with Tian Tian on the phone. He tells Tian Tian he’s going to return to the professional scene, that he’s making a new team and plans to invite him. But Tian Tian has to vow not to give up at Worlds and keep winning. Tian Tian agrees, and Lin Feng promises he’ll fight alongside him. Lin Feng then heads into his match with renewed resolve, to climb from the bottom all the way back to the top, and overcome the rival that defeated him so many years ago.

Honestly hadn't expected to still be reading this considering I've never even played League. It's a fun title regardless, and it's pleasant to find a story that isn't all venom and revenge plots.

Amusing characters, and stakes just high enough to find myself invested in what happens.

I wish this wasn't a five star scale, but this isn't a 4/5 so this is what it gets.

Shounen version of "The King's Avatar".

It still gets 4 stars, because I'm biased towards detailed, competitive eSports.
Not the shoujo/josei novels that seem to be popular these days. You know the kind... "A Slight Smile", "Why Not Soar", etc.

Lotsa reviews written before me, so I'll just summarize... whether you enjoy it probably relies on the following:

(1) Do you play League of Legends?
Hyper-detailed descriptions of sometimes rather normal plays, but entertaining nonetheless. Note that author makes absolutely no effort to describe League of Legends game mechanics.
If you don't... more>> play it, you'll either end up skimming through the "action", or have no idea why it's a good play, or why millions of annoying fan-boys watching the MC keep raving about it.

(2) Are you ok with translators taking lots of liberties?
The translators are definitely a riot, but there's a lot of content they've inserted that clearly aren't from the author. While it's a good laugh for western audiences, it may be much harder for Asian audiences to be immersed in the novel. Ends up being a western take on an asian novel.

(3) Do you enjoy shounen MCs with stunted EQ?
This is my major gripe with the novel. MC is 19 (not 18 since he's supposed to be a year older). But he acts like a 12-yr old with constant chuunibyou references and incredibly low-EQ. He is incredibly supportive of his friends, being able to tr*sh opponents and taunt trolls. But yet he gets incredibly weepy over past experiences and relationships, to the point that he can't even properly communicate to people close to him about why he's sad. This disconnect is just weird.

If you're using One Piece as a comparison, just keep in mind Luffy was 17 years old, BEFORE the time-skip. And that's a hyper-specific shounen manga.

Even MC's background story doesn't make any sense.
Spoiler

(1) MC was too young during his eSports career (14? 15?). Yet, even after climbing to the top, carrying and being an inspiration to his team, encouraging them despite the pressure, he quit the eSports scene after making one mistake in the finals, took early retirement and went into hiding. Huh?

(2) Then MC somehow "found himself" over the course of the next 4 years, and now has strong aspirations to rise to the top again, even trying to build his own team. Huh??

(3) BUT, he is ashamed of meeting his former teammates, and has to be repeatedly encouraged to contact them. Even though it's obvious he'll have to meet them again if he tries to climb to the top. HUH???

(1) - (2) - (3) do not compute at all.
Just emphasizes that MC is not just a shounen-esque character, but an emotionally stunted and dissociative character. Since it just doesn't make any sense.

What seems to be a mildly interesting novel that could turn very interesting is seemingly marred by either the Translators or Editors taking liberty with the novel and adding their own spin to some of the Text which can be off putting considering it's a Chinese novel and not a western one.

I understand taking liberty with what chat says but when you make a paragraph quote the fresh prince of bel-air is highly unprofessional.

Just my tad bit about how they ruined the novel for me but give it a shot... more>> if you don't mind. <<less

I really like what the translation team has done here, trying to make a novel and LoL accessible to everyone. I love this team's style of making the work better in translation instead of merely translating word-for-word like a machine. Rise seems like a fun novel with quirky characters that exist beyond their role to the MC with odd traits that leave me smiling when they interact.

Now that I'm at c424 I like that even though the MC is a chuuni, it's not focused on that fact. He's just confident... more>> because he has the skills to back it up, and that leads to some nice face-slapping to defend his friend's honor (the fact that he went super-face-slap-mode not for himself but for his friend is particularly nice). The novel goes into some serious moments, which is a nice contrast to the MC's outward exuberance. <<less

I've enjoyed this webnovel a lot more than I expected to. Huge props to the author, translator and editors for their work on this.

I really like the interactions between the characters, and between streamers and their chat, which are hilarious. It feels like real people talking to each other. It also feels pretty representative of what I've seen stream chats to be like. I also like how I'm not having to constantly google Chinese words and idioms (which has been one of my pet peeves with webnovels since I started... more>> reading them) because they've been translated in a way that's easy for non-Chinese people to follow!

I'm gonna come out and say that this is the best translated and edited webnovel I've ever read. I appreciate the effort the team has put into their work, because it really shows. I can count the number of times I've played League on one hand, yet I'm able to follow everything that's going on because the team took the time to explain terms and actions that otherwise wouldn't make sense. I also heard that the author had just mentioned the key (q, w, e, r) for many champions' actions during the League scenes, which I 100% would not have been able to understand had the translation team not described the actual actions. Not only that, they do such a good job of dramatizing the League matches that even I'm interested in what's going on despite not being a player myself.

tl;dr I love the SoL aspect of the webnovel, and the translation team did an amazing job on this! <<less

So, I haven't played a single match of Lol, or at least I hadn't until I read Rise. It's an engaging read, serously, even when you don't get what's going on. I found myself hyped out about the prospect of Lin Feng, the MC, playing a match with a professional while a hundred people watched him Stream. Shall I credit the author for this? Or maybe the translation team? Or both? I don't know, but not only has the novel managed to get over the hurdle of me, a reader,... more>> knowing next to nothing about Lol, but it has also made it a experience pleasant enough to bait me into playing a game I've been avoiding for 7 years. That speaks volumes to the merits of the novel, right?

I'm not even 100 chapters in, so I can't speak with confidence about the fine details of the narrative, but so far most characters are pretty likable, even some if the MC's cringe lines are made somewhat funny because of the novel being self conscious about it and mocking it -Again, I don't know if this is the author's merit of it was the translation team who improved on it. Some characters have shown glipmses of deph and development potential, specially the MC in regards with his past on the proffesional Lol scene.

Personally I always want to know a few key details about the romance in a novel before getting into it, so I'll tell you guys what I know. This is not a whish fullfillment novel where the MC get's a new girl every 100 chapters and somehow makes a harem work in a modern setting, but the novel doesn't avoid mentioning romance either. There's potential romantic interests involved and I personally expect romance to take more of a back end role in the story, with most of the plot focused on the game. But Lin Feng will probably get a girlfriend at some point, he's 19 and attractive, don't fret. <<less

Review:

How could I put thumbs up although I'm going to be tr*shing the story?
1. The novel has a dedicated group publishing the translator who are funny and brings life to the novel.
2. Despite the weakness in characters, they have a distinct Chinese character type and are generally a guilty pleasure type of characters for Chinese Novel readers.
3. If you join the discord, you can make fun of the group translating it at no additional cost!
But most importantly, the story doesn't go too deep into the gameplay... more>> but still maintain knowledge about old seasons of league so if you want to experience what league was like before your current era then this might just be the place for you.

Story : The plot is kind of weak with lack of motivation and character motivation seems a bit one note.
For example, Kings Avatar started out with a completely capable pro who has been cheated out of his achievements by a greedy corporation.
In Rise, the characters seem to be in place randomly without any sense of urgency or fate even though it is somewhat implied that the main character began his journey playing again at the right place and right time.
In both stories, the main characters were contenders for consideration as the best in the entire scene at one point however Kings Avatar had more opportunities for the main character to shine (in 1v1 and quick combat matches) whereas League is such a team orientated game.
Contrary to the negative reviews, I feel like the Main Character in Rise can potentially maintain his challenger level because 1. He's shown knowledge in studying the meta, 2. His macros are still top tier, 3. Micro knowledge should still be prominent, and 4. Most importantly, we haven't been shown him against challengers except once where they hadn't even gone out of the laning phrase.
(TL:DR it feels like the main character's lack of clear headedness seem to make the issue of how lucky and skilled he is unlikable because he ended up in a positive position although he shouldn't have been able to without putting in real effort.)

Characters: Characters are likable, but they just don't feel real.
They have weaknesses and are vulnerable, but lack clear cut personality and motivation.
They can be seen as the cardboard cutout happy go lucky dense main character, the fat anxious best friend, lancer/cold female friend, the big sister support character, male friend A, male friend B, and student president.
This actually works since stereotypes enable better idea flow and character development, but each of them doesn't feel real but likable.

World building: The depth in the actual world is missing, but it kinda makes sense because this world is just real life a few years ago with slight changes. <<less

First off: I played LoL a few years ago but lost interested due to the community. And here I am. Sitting in front of my PC and reainstalling LoL due to a novel.
I didn't read any description of the story before diving into it. And oh boy that stuff is like crack. Once you start reading it you can't stop with it!
True, the translation team did edit it. But tbh it's way more enjoyable this way! If it was like the raws I would have quit after 5... more>> chapters or so.

Definitely recommended for: Gamers, people with an interest in games, eSport fans (!), fans of competitions and all of those who just want something different for a change! Really entertaining until now :) <<less

Really good and interesting. The MC is good but not perfect and the side npg are interesting. The streaming take on thing is good. As you can see I'm not use to right review and my english is so so.

The important thing you got to remember is that it's a good novel. And it"s the first time I stumble upon this kind of story. In china webnovel it's kind of rare. So read it and enjoy it.

you can say thanks!

This novel is super underated and the translators did an amazing job changing cringe Chinese metaphors with actually funny content. This was the most enjoyable novel I've read in wuxia world by a longshot. The best thing about the novel is how every character has a brain and feelings without turning into brain-dead yes men to the MC and female characters that don't just blindly hold the ankles of the MC while literally acting like they ve been struck by cupid's.

The MC can be described as the monkey D luffy... more>> of league of legends, so if u liked luffy from one piece this MC is pretty much exactly that with plenty of face slapping and satisfying reveals and honestly is worth reading even if you've never played league of legends. <<less

I enjoy this book, the translators Shank, Dev and Sietse are a huge part in that. They produce outstanding quality of translation making it enjoyable to read.

A part of the reason why I like it is because I play league myself so I understand quite a bit without explanation. But don't fear, even if you don't understand a single thing about league or the champs, the translators have made sure to make it as friendly as possible for you and explain what everything does. Who knows you might get interested,... more>> look it up and get hooked on league.

But follow a boy on his RISE to world rank number 1!

P.S League has a great song called Rise as well check that out. League has their own music department that very much holds out to other songs, all of them are bangers. <<less

Some slight spoilers ahead, though no major story points.

Alright so I have been waiting for some more chapters to do a review but now that we get into the first meaty arcs.

The novel seems to have a slow start, but it's necessary world building and character development. We get to learn how the characters interact with each other and although there are some frustrating moments they are overshadowed by the overall story.

We get a steady build up of our "generic" OP MC though we also learn a bit about his... more>> past here and there without it being way too much in your face style. Generic not in the sense that the MC is generic, but that its a common trope that the MC seems to be OP, but so far he has also not met someone of his powerlevel.

We get into the first tournament arc right now and they are doing some really great parallels for the perspectives. Really love what the translators are doing with this novel.

Not entirely related, but the translator thoughts are friggin great.

The only negative is that this novel has me playing league again and that game is disgusting, I hate soloQ and my life already.

My Score is a reflection of my personal enjoyment. I tend to not enjoy novels with a bad writing quality, but I do not specifically factor that into my reviews. If a novel is tr*sh but entertaining I will vote it highly. This is not the case for Rise imo, it is certainly not the best novel ever written, but I abso-f*cking-lutely love its comedy, style and everything else. <<less

Pretty Solid.

Pretty mediocre in plot development, you can see it for miles and its all the same rinse and repeat. Though the execution is what im looking for here and I can say its done pretty well, the author knows what he's talking about and im having a log of fun reading the team vs team in LOL.

Characrers? Forget about it MC is a braindead shounen, dense and dumb for the sole purpose of making Romance hype. Its about 3000+ chapters and I hope that characters don't get introduced one... more>> arc and they vanish entirely from the plot. Tranlators are solid! They ramp up the immersion that the novel brings.

Looking forward for more ass-Kicking action in the future releases! <<less

My favourite novels are ones that blends great comedy with serious moments and this novel is one of the best for this very reason. It manages to keep a comedic undertone throughout its story but for moments which should be serious it gives these scenes justice. The novel delves into the mental health of e-sports player hidden behind a fun story about a teen who wants to be the greatest. The translation team have also made the novel very easy to understand even if you aren't a big league player... more>> and the dialogue of the charecters is some of the best and most genuine I've seen in novels like this. <<less

This is one of my favorite novels right now. As a longtime League of Legends player and somewhat follower of the professional scene, I may be a bit biased. But even people who aren't interested in League can find this novel enjoyable, as there are many fun slice of life parts as well. The translation team also does a great job of describing the scenes in game in a way that makes it understandable and enjoyable even to people who are not familiar with the game. All in all, I'd... more>> recommend giving this novel a shot, it may soon become one of your favorites. <<less

Yes this is basically a league of legends fanfic but there's something that pulls me to it, the in-game sequences are written very well (it must be hard to not make it tedious to read) and the overall plot has a lot of potential with an Ashe (Pokemon) type journey ahead of us

Oh and translators/editors are doing a great job of making the novel so easy to read

It's hard to put in words how this novel makes me feel so I'll put it like this. You ever play League of Legends (or any game really) for an extended period of time, but then you get so tired of the Toxicity from the community that you have to swear to never touch it again? Now imagine if there was a novel that could magically make you want to go back to that game because of how fun the novel makes it seem. That's what Rise is!

Rise does an... more>> amazing job of showing just how cool and fun LoL can be. It also helps that the translation team is dedicated to making sure that everything is coherent and relevant. Whether it's the real world conversations or the texts from the stream, Rise shows all of the emotions it comes to LoL as well as how exhilarating it can be.

Other reviews will probably go in depth when it comes to the main characters or the story, but I'll only say this. If you want a good time, read this story. It may not top the cultivation stories out there, but it brings a pretty nice slice-of-life story in your hands and into your heart. <<less

I don't have a lot to add in terms of review other than what people wrote before me, but I just want to point out some interesting details for those who are not into the whole league of legends e-sports scene.

  1. "Rise" is the also the title of perhaps the most popular/appreciated league song which was released before the LoL world championship. You can find it on youtube under the title "RISE (ft. The Glitch Mob, Mako, and The Word Alive) | Worlds 2018 - League of Legends".
  2. It's especially relevant for the Chinese, as 2018 was the year when China finally won the championship dethroning Korea (who were winning continuously since 2013) and had their "Rise".
