Even if the story is getting better and better, that is not the most important part of the novel. The best part in this novel is the feeling when the main character dare to insult or beat any of his enemy in front of anyone... the feeling of venting your anger with the MC is incredible, specially when each guy deserve it.

Also, the comic part of many situation are really really funny (well done for the author). It was the first time I laughed so much in a novel.

I've read... more>> many novel the last 2 year and this is one of my favorite in terms of writing : it is funny, violent, weird, touching, MC with character evolving and an ancient family to protect.

Ps : some time the character goes into insult mode in is head and talk a bit to much but that's a small issue. <<less

Just finish this series. My favorite part is probably the first 1/4 of the book, it remains engaging and entertaining throughout but the last quarter introduces a lot of new characters I didn't care about and most of the characters from the previous 3/4 of the novel is never used again.

The novel is very poetic and there were some very emotional and touching scenes that can get people misty eyed. There are also some very comedic moment and funny characters here, the author makes swearing into almost an art form... more>> at place and is great at creating awkward and absurd scenario that can make me literally laugh out loud.

The main character often use underhanded and deceitful tactic to successfully outsmart his opponent rather than overpower them since he is almost always fighting against opponent way more powerful than himself.

The ending feels a bit rushed and could probably be better off with an couple of more chapters expanding the epilogue. But overall an enjoyable read and something I recommend.

A previous reviewer mention that there is racism in this novel, yes it exist and is incredibly stupid and comically trivial, it leaves me exasperated but is also easily ignored by the reader:

The Racism is so disappointing because it is basically a throw away line that seems like nothing more than a joke but is unfortunately unavoidable as it is integral to the plot and Jun Mo Xie's character.

Note that there is major spoiler ahead:

There is only 1 conversation where it is brought up in any relevant way. Mei Xue Yan, one of Jun Mo Xie's future wife explains the reason why she is letting some of her enemies live even if she had to get hurt herself.

MXY: These people will be critical for the success of a major upcoming battle.

JMX: Who gives a crap? They hurt you so kill them, f**k this future battle.

MXY: But this is a battle against monsters! The safety of all the people of this continent is at stake. The enemy are evil and powerful demons that can disappear from site, camouflage themselves into trees and rocks and move like one with the shadow!

JMX: Still not seeing why this is your problem.

MXY: They are all incestuous brothers and sisters Siamese twins that live for thousands of years.

JMX: Eh, that's kinda sick but still not your problem... wait a minute those fighting skills sound very familiar, what language to these speak?

MXY: They have some weird language that no one understand, their battlecry is fierce and disgusting... something like... ba... baka...

JMX:... Bakayaro?

MXY: Yes that's it!

JMX:... !#[email protected]@# Its the dam Japs! Ok I'm in, we gonna kill them all!!!

MXY... what?

And that's basically it! The fact that these evil incest Siamese Twin monster speaks Japanese is pretty much never mentioned again. However it is also inherently unavoidable because Jun Mo Xie's first reason to fight these monster was that they speak Japanese, he as a character is racist and sees no issue with this.

One of his wife is literally a thousand year old bird monster that managed to transform into a human and he has no problem with this at all and even went to great length to protect her dignity but when it comes to the evil monster that speak Japanese, then they must DIE DIE DIE!

The novel never pick up on this again, always referring to these monster thereafter as the Yi tribe people and they are basically a footnote at the end of the novel that got annihilated by Jun Mo Xie in less than a sentence.

I don't know how this has such a high rating. Its very generic with barely average writing that tends to be extremely repetitive even by Chinese web novelist standards. Just try reading chapter 38 without wanting to kill the author for wasting your time. If you can do it, then you don't value your time at all.

If you do decide to read it, read it in large chunks and skim. Even if this is your first Xianxia, there's no point in actually reading all the words. Most of them only... more>> exist to fill the character quota. <<less

I really love this one so much that I read raws of it and its one of the best out there. It has Humor, an OP MC (which comes quite late in the novel), smart MC (which is quite rare) as he uses his past life knowledge fully to strengthen his family so it a must read IMO!

Reviewed up to chapter 93:

Novel is exceptional in actually introducing characters to the reader but that does mean more details to read and slower paced actions then some people might like (if you want a quick paced novels with just random characters being introduced, possibly killed off just as fast, with no substance, but an unrealistic OP protagonist with trouble explaining how they beat others higher rank than themselves... then isn’t for you). You get a vivid plot with politics, actions, and drama with characters who's action are based off... more>> reasonable emotions, a working brain, and individual history. The thing people might like about the novel is that the action and interactions are reasonable/logical due to the detailed characters with their own humanly flaws, that you can somewhat relate to if you were put into their situation (could be a dislike for some people who just wants an MC with OP plot armor that murders everything in their way).

p.s. due to detailed character development, this novel is extremely slow in relationship/harem building department, but hey... first possible catch is a Tsundere. (with other novels you would question how did this supposedly beautiful and unobtainable female not get duped into marriage with a dozen kids yet, with how easy/fast they fall in love) <<less

It began as a fairly interesting story of a calm and mature protagonist with a great attitude, a smart enemy and an interesting plot.

Then more and more predictable filler elements and forced tension started appearing here and there, although it's kinda back to alright right now.

But there certainly are unique aspects that are very appealing if used well,
so let's see how it's gonna develop from now on...

The novel started out great and had some really decent moments and political intrigue. However on reading beyond the current translation I got a bit tired with the author pulling threads and setting up conflicts but not resolving them. Now there is a long list of things which have accumulated and given the pace of writing I have my doubts whether the author can really pull it off. In any case, the list of story threads and conflicts are:

1. Increasing Grandfather's strength - I have lost count but my guess its being on the table for at least 50 chapters. Near 175th chapter there is an intro for "how" it is supposed to be done but ingredients are "scarce". This for the most part should have been one of the quickest thread to be resolved.
2. Struggle with Li Family - This has been one of the central points. Still unresolved after 250 but the author thought why not simmer the plot even more and he has added "Supreme Xian" as the master setting up another conflict.
3. Struggle with Snow City - This has been set with around 115 chapter. This is still unresolved and there is some other side plot which gets introduced around 200 chapters. Another "Supreme Xian warrior".
4. Struggle with Blood Soul Mountain Village (TL might have a different name) - Introduced towards 175 chapter. Still unresolved and while the story has been set to progression, there is another "Supreme Xian warrior" involved.
5. Teaching Ying Bo Kong - Another "Supreme Xian" warrior.
6. Setting up business side story - Working with Fatty Tang around 180ish chapter, still not set in motion
7. Getting Dugu Family under his thumb for drinking his "heavenly" wine
8. The Heaven Beast (TL might use a different name) storyline
9. Conflict with the girl from the brothel - Forgot the name

Don't get me wrong, the story is meatier than your average CN LN with their "cultivation" and "staged matches", I would have liked author to close threads before opening new ones. With 20% of the novel gone and author will need to talk about MC's cultivation and resolve these threads, I am not very optimistic. I am going to read another 200+ chaps ie nearly 50% to see if some of these things to get a good resolution, jf not most probably a 2 star would be the grade. <<less

It started very well. Although in the first 300 chapters the MC wasn't particularly strong, the story was hilarious, the characters were entertaining, and all was proceeding smoothly.

However 3 things were steadily highlighted, and turned a five star novel into a two star one (-1 star per issue).

Racism, heavy misogyny, and severe disgust toward conjoined twins.

I won't go into details, but anyone who read this to the 900th chapter knows that the author's hatred for Japanese people is quite deep. You also know that although he has nothing against women,... more>> he firmly believes that the only way for them to find happiness is to stand with their head lowered behind their husband (and to give birth to children). Lastly, him representing Japanese people as vicious amoral rapists, and conjoined twins (+many comments I will avoid) tells a lot on his view regarding both the former and the later.

Yet, if despite all the aforementioned he managed to display brilliant writing and well crafted plot, it wouldn't be that bad. Alas, the MC is as hypocritical as those he scolds, and does the same things why he criticizes, and insult them. Then, his excuse is "I never said that I am a good person."

He is subpar trash that deserves to be damned for all the wanton contradictions, and hypocrisy he made me shallow.

Moreover, the novel loses all form of organization. The power boosts become random with some bs as justification. We see a lot of repetitiveness, the humour loses all appeal... etc

In the end, with all the negative points, I wish I could give this novel a -5 rating, or at least a 0 because it is just trash, and wasted a tremendous part of my time. I would only recommend it to my worst ennemies. <<less

Rare example where reincarnated assasin actually moves around like assasin and it is not just his backstory. Fairly similar to black belly doctor in some parts but it does not kill the joy of read. MC gets his cheat item with reincarnation. Story moves around power struggle in capital so far and training his own troops. Personally I recommend this.

I was thinking this might be one of those.... kill kill kill and over the top serious MC stories but. This is unexpectedly funny at times. I mean, who would admit themselves as a tree after being found out spying in the tree to a group of intelligent high ranked martial artist. not to mention other scenes... and reaction.. hahaha the wine contest, misunderstanding, urinating challenge, diarrhea pill tragedy.. oh dear. the MC really knows how to have fun.

Another great novel by this author. 4.2/5

While not on par with the masterpiece that is Transcending the Nine Heavens, it's still a great novel. The MC is amazing, most of the rest of the cast is terrific, the villains are not the usual, common and generic super powerful big bads. The language is great, the banter between the characters is godly at times, you wont see the pointless bloat to reach a higher word count that a lot of other CN web novel authors spam out instead of trying... more>> to construct a good story. And it's laugh out loud funny at times, not chuckle funny, I mean actual funny.

What this novel lacks is direction, after 156 chapters it still feels like there are no true proper goals aside from usual ones, where the MC wants to reach the top, get revenge for his family etc. The world building isn't that great either to be fair. Those are the main flaws of this otherwise great novel. The good outwights the bad 10x over though, it's easily among the top 1% of the novels being translated. <<less

Want to know a shameless debauchery turned deadly assissin named Jun Moxie? Tsk. Tsk. His slyness knows no bound. Holds the record for the most death angering sharpest tounge of twisted wit.

The story and plot is superb, with all angles moving together, with one meeting point of explosion where the plot will slowly unravels. The fighting scenes are amazing, and Moxie's shameless is as definitely high as the heavens.

I love this series pity that the current translator hasn't updated for a while which leaves me no choice for put this series on hold as I have now forgotten most of the side characters. Things I enjoyed about the MC is his shamelessness and also his fat friend :) the rolling meatball/bun I think he was called a few times?

155 chapters in, it's still outstanding. Excellent storytelling, regularly funny, and with a likable protagonist. Many other characters are complex and interesting as well, and even "bad guys" have understandable motivations behind their unlikable actions. Really, they can only be called bad guys because they oppose the protagonist, while the protagonist and his family and friends are no less terrible than their enemies.

Refreshingly, the novel hasn't focused on cultivation. At the same time, older adults tend to be significantly stronger than the younger generation, which is sensible. There are parts... more>> worth savoring, admonitions that hide themselves beneath the generic words and actions they criticize while offering deeper levels to the situation at hand. The story does have a couple of common flaws, but they're less pronounced than in most novels of the genre. <<less

I have read until chapter 113 or v2c13, and I got to say this is one of my favorite. The store is good, the translation is good, the characters are good and you can see that the author is butting a lot of work on it just from setting up the layout off the store, Yes it might take a while for a story to get going per say, but I like how we get to see the MC deal with the world as he just got there and need... more>> time to understand his surrounding a lot better. Also there are not a lot of fights because the MC is not a fighter but an assassin and only know how to kill <<less

Slower paced, but the author seems to be laying a solid foundation for the remainder of the story. A well written and funny story with a actually smart MC.

More political and strategical maneuvering than fights soo far in the translated chapters, but its what makes this novel different than the others and adds entertainment it.

Another novel that you can tell that the author is a shut-in with little experience in real life situations and with absolutely no knowledge of the opposite gender.

The more you read the more it becomes apparent that the so called author has no idea how to write and the jokes that made the novel somewhat interesting to read are nowhere to be found.

For example the main character spends 260 chapters hiding his true abilities even from his family only to show them in an extravagant fashion to 3 girls 2... more>> of those may be his enemies. <<less

4/5 stars

The reason it's not 5/5 stars for me was because of how it can suddenly become really boring and frustrating for a long while before it becomes entertaining again. Aside from that, I think the story is great, I enjoy all 3 of Fengling's novels but to me, this one is special as it is the first one I decided to read out of those 3. It's fun watching how the characters interact or how Jun Moxie infuriates most of the cast, I wouldn't consider this novel to be... more>> a light snack from the current chapters but I wouldn't call it the main course either, it's more like a really heavy appetizer that could be mistaken as the main course. Though this might change in the future like in another 300 - 400 chapters after the plot advances more. <<less

An otherwise perfect novel if the author didn't try to make most lines based on how amazing the MC is and stating the obvious. There are way too many lines explaining how cunning and smart the MC is for doing this and that... And then the author seems to think his readers are 5 years old and has to state the obvious which sometimes kills the mood for instance, "To hell with your bargain! You’re only offering this chance for the sake of this Xuan Core!" Yes captain obvious you... more>> don't have to explain it I'm not dumb >_>

And then there are the forceful "philosophical" ideas that try to make the MC seem deep which really only makes him seem childish and presumptions. Also too many sentences end with "Ah" it makes me feel like characters are moaning instead sighing <<less

Great novel. Moves slow but he is putting the pieces in place
MC is good at adapting to the new enviroment. The stories we hear about his past self are just comedic and stupid but he is still that person and it shows sometimes.
