Hello, pasttimer here!

This novel is told from a second person point-of-view and is kind of visual novel-esque (not in writing, but in collecting different endings). It's very dark, quite gory, and not really for the faint of heart haha

I really liked this novel, I think it's quite spiritual. The setting seems to be in the late 1990s to early 2000s in countryside Britain (a place in the UK was mentioned, but this is just assumptions) were 'hell' has literally opened up and is currently out for humanity's blood. Not much... more>> action about this is shown because this is just world-building.

The MC is a fascinating character, he's practical to a fault because of his past. He's a priest working for a small town and this isn't just a throw-away or title job, the author expands beautifully on how the priest navigates everyday life and his position all while making him even more adorable (?) haha

The ML
Spoiler

was a former soldier, and I know that everyone reading must've been shocked and were like 'wtf I just wanted to read p*rn' because I was too, I was worried that the author wouldn't be able to encapsulate that soldier veteran feel for the ML given his current situation but my worries were very misplaced, good job author!

[collapse]

The plot is cohesive, the small quiet moments are the plots I like the most and although I'm not a very big fan of the final ending I still loved the read nonetheless. It's a very dramatic and very poetic novel and just really gets you thinking about some stuff I really recommended you finish it if you're considering it, even if you don't like the plot the journey to finish it still leaves you that little something good books always do. <<less

This story contains: r*pe, gangr*pe, mutilation, gore, ab*se, child ab*se self-harm, su*cide, mental illness, and a bunch of other dark topics that are not glamorized. It also contains a heartbreakingly beautiful love story between two broken people who desperately need each other and belong together.

This story is so good.

It's also super super dark in the beginning and it has a "choose your own adventure" element that includes some super gross bad endings. The bad ending chapters are not cannon so if you aren't comfortable just skip them. The translator always... more>> puts the bad endings first so it's easy to just not expose yourself to them if you can't handle them. I think it's a real interesting idea and I really like learning more about the characters through them, but I love a good tragedy. <<less

Once again, I'm appalled of the shallowness of a lot of raters. You really can't call this a simple BL webnovel anymore.... This is pure literature that could easily be missed because squemish fluffy readers did not read tags and did not just stay in their genre.

So based on the reviews of those one star raters we should put behind bars people like Shelley or Junji Ito or Mario Puzo of highly acclaimed The Godfather? LMAO.

It's a noir with gore and r*pe at foundation but eases down to... more>> romance in the later chapters. With questions of morality and religion, this story shows how humans aren't any different from beasts or in this case, demons.

For the more simpler reader, you, the reader will be it's POV. The story is a bit non-linear as it will also introduce a couple of possible "endings" caused by the choice you make. I've outlined the paths of the alternate bad endings (BEs) and the true ending HE.

Spoiler

#1 BE: 1-2

#2 BE: 1, 3-9 (choice of A)

#3 BE (choice of B-B) 1, 3-8, 10-22

#4 BE (choice of B-A-B) 1, 3-8, 10-21, 23-33)

True ending - HE (choice of B-A-A) 1, 3-8, 10-21, 23-32, 34-end

Disturbing to the degree where I think the person who wrote it and decided to make it public possibly needs monitoring.

Spoiler

A priest purchases a part human- part demon s*ave from the market at 1 coin per pound, and the first interaction is them saying that's too expensive--please cut some of the limbs off to reduce the price. (Which would later be sold as cheap meat for eating, to my horror.)

The original plan was to basically have a short lived f*** toy that was a torso and a head, but they change their mind after some push back from the s*ave, but more because of the realization that it'd probably die of shock before very long that way. Still, they dally so long in conveying this change of mind, that the sentient being's legs are cut off. The priest's reaction to this is essentially a mild "that's a shame, he had hot legs" and no other emotions or empathy.

Then we are treated to the information that, while this being gets a severe infection from the hatchet job amputation, the priest has been f****ing the probably-dying-of-a-fever delusionally ill person regardless.

Excuse me while I vomit in the corner and feel filthy forever.

Maybe it gets better and there is some fantastically noir and gritty story as a reward for making it through the seriously effed up intro, and there was a point to all of this, but I am opting out after just that chapter and a half and never looking back.

Even if you're one of the sickos into this sort of human fleshlight thing, I say skip because the writing is also in the extremely annoying 2nd person point of view ("you walk down the street" "you think about buying the s*ave" "you talk to the merchant" etc.)

Now excuse me while I go bathe in bleach.

It’s incredibly interesting. Or maybe that’s just me and my kinda twisted head but the story’s very descriptive in a way I could never be bored of.

Spoiler

I honestly went into this story just expecting p*orn but I got so much more. There honestly isn’t that many s*x scenes and they aren’t really descriptive (although somehow it’s pretty hot)

This story is mostly about healing—mentally and physically (although imperfect but their kinda trying) —and unlearning pretty mess-up beliefs (sorta)

I really don't understand why so many great novels are getting low ratings simply because of some abusive plots. Please check the tags and TWs before reading.

The author's writing is amazing. They did not directly describe the traumas and struggles of the characters but demonstrated it through the plots, conversations, and sometimes even black humor. They also wrote it from the POV of the priest, and his choices would bring to different ends.

I agree with another comment. This novel is definitely not "smut", although some of the content is ----.... more>> It is more like a story of two people saving each other. If you have some time to patiently read a story, please give it a try! <<less

CAUGHT UP AND INDONT WANNA BEEEEEE ahhh can't wait for next update

Okay, hear me out. Like I wasn't sure if I was going to be into it considering other reviews of ab*se, r*pe and gangbang, but ultimately as a story, it's phenomenal. BUT If you're looking for fluffy, feel-good OR something that's just h**ny p*rn, this isn't it. So don't read unless you're prepared to read through controversial and daring dark writing exactly as tagged ("Dead Dove: Don't Eat") before you get to the sweeter stuff.

Basically, the story... more>> takes place in a dark, body horror-esque normalized post-war (?) alternate world where captured demons are dehumanized and/or sexually ab*sed by soldiers or anyone who can afford them at will. Plot begins when the priest who buys a mixed demon at a whim, and I am so shook.

Literally flabbergasted at how good this is. This is a webnovel?? Especially a CHINESE one? Much praise to the translator pasttimer, but holy cow, it reads like one of those award-winning indie visual novels in terms of literally everything. I've grown so accustomed to clunky writing, soap opera or tropey plots and shallow characterization that a gem of this kind is unmistakably so rare, I cannot praise this enough. Psychological tag ilu, but moreover, this writer is RLY GOOD

I cannot pick my jaw up off the floor. There's so much that this wins with. I've always been a fan of second person writing due to the choose-your-own adventure genre being absolutely fantastic for mood and world-building, but as someone who writes for a hobby, I've never seen or read anyone else that uses this pov the way and depth I crave. I can't stop shaking it's so good and I'm rambling, but if you're like me and this kind of dark sh*t set along two really well written characters sends your blood racing if it's done well in-story, you'll really enjoy it.

So many things to praise, never mind the PLOT, the CHARACTERS, and the CONFLICT aaaaa I'm definitely studying this to learn from once I finish... like you don't understand.... The flow of narration and the narrator's self-reflections as he deals with the demon (and those bad endings! hauntingly amazing writing!!) ; the sophistry of its themes of with morality, faith, humanity, religious guilt; and the relationship between the two characters and the twists and UGHHH.

So good now I legitimately just want to know how I can support this author. Never knew I'd find a writer to stan off novelupdates but here we are. also 90% sure this is going to end in a BE, but maybe if the author is merciful we'll just get either (Spoilers pls don't actually read this if you haven't gone through the story bc I wouldn't want to deprive you of the experience)

Spoiler

BE: Enoch dying in true ending to offset the Lemuel dying so many times, or they both die bc religious lynching. either way, it's like, "Ah, this is what you were meant to do. In sermons, you have quoted that for God so loved the world that he gave his only son, and that whoever believes will not perish. But your heart aches so much, and you think back to the day you traded that holy artefact for Lemuel's life. Emotion chokes you—and you feel it all at once. The tightening in your throat the day Lightning was taken away, the day the nun who kissed your forehead went too—the day you decided to buy all of Lemuel when the knife came down a second time. Perhaps you are being punished, or perhaps this was always meant to be the consequence of your rebellion." Maybe while dying, Enoch forsakes his faith and he thinks only really of Lemuel and the experiences he's taught him, and the months with him that's worth more than the 25 years he's already lived.

HE: I could hope for Enoch making Lemuel his new religion—if author goes about it hahaha. Though idk if Enoch could abandon it all, I would love for some domestic future of them spending their lives together away from religion influence and demon intolerance... Lemuel has suffered enough bc of who he is and his sexuality, and Enoch has never been allowed to live for his own desires or wants outside of the purpose and "sacrifice he must take on for the sake of the world"...I think it'd be nice and I just rly like this novel rn okkk

People who've rated low yet didn't completely read it shouldn't rate 😒 People should also look at the tags, knowing what story this is, before delving in it. You didn't even understand and or reach the point why MC was 'like that'. How the ML reached that point.

Like a video game, it presented options. Unlike a video game, it presents you all the options / it just backtracks to the other choices when you reach a BE.

The world building with the demons and priests is good. Hope it was just... more>> expounded more (rating this 5 just so it goes up. It's sad to see the ratings in NU so low. Doesn't justify this unique work). The locations and era are sometimes hard to imagine and connect (like the weapons made, the countries said, the places described, the roadtrips, conscriptions, Hell, the 'magics/holy works', hybrids at the end, etc.)

The way that the MC really felt like he is deep in a cult was amazing and dark. Kudos to the ML for surviving too, and for dragging MC out of the dark. Happy to see them live their HE life, a new beginning. Seeing their journey & development was good. They've come a long way. The novel was short yet full of impact.

The story of a 'Holy Son' becoming human, step by step. And a 'part devil' that 'lived' ~ <<less

I want to leave a review to encourage ppl to read this if they can handle the topics since I personally think this deserves a much higher rating (2.7 as of the posting of this review).

This novel has amazing writing and translation. I love the pick your adventure style story bits too, and the few bad ends you can skip entirely if you don't feel like reading it. The plot and backstory is *chef's kiss*, and I really like how the dynamic between our main characters develops. I guess the... more>> only thing that I can really complain about is how there isn't much dialogue, but the descriptions and details are still great.

The tag also said "smut", but tbh I don't think it's -that- steamy, and definitely not very easy to jack off to lmao. If you want an light-hearted read or pure smut, this is not it. Again, there are some dead dove; do not eat stuff so readers beware. <<less

Note: TL is complete although it doesn't say on NU. No chapters are missing.

Forget the rating, seems like people can't handle the TWs. So just in case, here's a thorough list of all the potential TWs - if any of them makes you squeamish, then don't read:

Rape, s*xual ab*se, s*x s*aves, gong r*pes shou, gang r*pe, su*cide, violence, gore, psychological horror, cults, keeping the shou as a s*ave, r*pe victim becomes lover, cultish brainwashing, ab*se and mu*der or children, some h*mophobia, s*xual humiliation mentioned, s*ave trade (but with devils/demons), severed limbs/mutilation, twisted alternative version of the pope and the Christian/Catholic church (might be uncomfortable/offensive if you a Christian/Catholic), mu*der

... more>> So, don't say you haven't been warned.

Setting: Western-style (probably American? Never specifically mentions the country's name) dystopian fantasy setting. Alternative universe that resembles the mid- to late 20th century in some ways. The gates of what seems to be the Christian version of hell has opened, the Catholic Church fights the devils who are menacing the earth, religious burnings have returned, the priests have magic powers.

MC: A small-town Catholic priest who's clearly not normal in some way, who buys a half-breed devil (devils can procreate with other species) and takes him home to become his s*x s*ave. Despite this, the priest isn't what I'd call a bad/evil person - the novel dives into why he does and acts in this way and how he became like that. The novel is mainly about the MC's development after he meets the ML.

ML: A mixed-blood devil/demon who's been r*ped and ab*sed before the MC buys him. His past is a mystery that will be revealed and have a big impact on the plot.

Gong MC x shou ML, but with a reversible alternative chapter at some point (not canon though).

Style and narration: Limited 2nd person narration from the priest's POV with occasional 3rd person narration. Written like a 'choose your own adventure' type of story with several alternative sad endings and one canon happy ending. Writing is really good and has a thorough grasp on the psychology of the characters.

Like the translator, I also think the canon ending is a bit weak, some important part are left unexplored or swept under the rug because the focus is on the CP, so while the premise of the story is really great, it doesn't completely follow through by the end - I guess because

Spoiler

the author was more interested in criticizing the church as being corrupted and doing bad deeds, instead of diving more into how the priests' magic power worked and how it was used against demons. It seemed like the 'Sons' and the pope together were so powerful they could actually work as the best weapon against the demons, resulting in a smaller loss of soldiers and less civilian casualties, as Enoch realizes in the scene where he's forced to go hide from the battle instead of fighting against the demons.

I honestly felt this was a weak point in the story - that Enoch sacrificing himself for the pope was horrific, but it could potentially have been an issue of the 'Sons' being sacrificed for the greater humanity and the moral/ethical implications of that - a true discussion of what's the core of the Christian faith and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ (who's never mentioned which is a bit weird considering it's supposed to be the Catholic Church.

If Enoch had instead sacrificed himself not for one old, senile man, but for the town that got overrun by the devils, wouldn't his sacrifice have been an actual noble one?

When the gates of hell are attacked with nukes, there are horrible casualties with humans dying or getting radiation - so weren't the Church's magic fighting better for the majority of people?

[collapse]

I feel the story has some potential interesting moral dilemmas that the author just dropped to focus on the love story, which is a bit of a shame.

Despite this, it's overall a very good story. <<less

If you're really squeamish towards gore or r*pe then I'd stead clear as the first couple chapters have some pretty graphic scenes.

Once you get past those though it's actually pretty sweet. It's written in 2nd person, which is a bit jarring at first but you get used to it quick. It's actually a very introspective novel which I was not expecting so the narration fits and lets us get fully immersed into the MC's thoughts. The characters battles are with themselves and with the institutions they grew up in. It... more>> mainly talked about religion as the MC grew up in the church, but it has a very nuanced take on the topic other than just religion bad or good. There are layers to everyone and everything presented.
Spoiler

I really liked how in the end the MC never stopped being religious. He instead changed the oppressive god he learned to submit to in the church to one that gave him the freedom to finally be happy.

[collapse]

Its main quirk is the different endings you can get. It takes a visual novel approach with giving you options and letting you choose which path to take. I initially though this was going to be distracting but it wasn't bad at all. They don't happen frequently and you can choose to just read it straight through taking every "bad end" as non cannon. I think it actually adds to the story at some points, fleshing out the characters even further.

All in all I think it was a surprisingly good read and I just wanted to give my own two cents before someone gets dissuaded by the pearl clutching reviews that didn't bother to read the TW's before starting. If this isn't your thing that's perfectly fine I hope you find something more to your taste, but if you decide to read anyway don't be surprised when there's torture p*rn in the second chapter. <<less

Stuck around long enough for the twist and still can't like the second choice arc. Everything is just so much worse after the truth of the demon. How is it that each progressive BE choice gets from distasteful to sadder. And why exactly am I reading this when I've got an paper this morning...

I suggest people to skip the part of the first option or draft when an option between two choices, like in interactive game, appears, that way you... more>> can avoid most of the gore and rpe, which happens in the first choices (and trust me the first bad ending is sick). I'm not sure if the extras or letter from the pope is included in the TL above. Interesting concept, letting you make certain choices with different branches just like how some horror novels are like. Went to search on the names and realised that 雷米尔 is Ramiel is the fallen angel from the book of Enoch (name of the Priest). A special CP between a Priest and a half-demon. At many of the chapters, I almost feel that the story is going to get a BE and I was so filled with angst. I read all the BE from the side branches and I swear ending 5 was so heart wrenchingly beautiful. This is from someone who strictly does not read BE. If you're one for it then go ahead and end it there. I followed the main branch to a HE and felt so happy for the two of them. Throughout the story, it explains the inner struggle of Enoch and how he finally achieve his own enlightenment. It was a wholesome read even though at first I felt weird as I am not familiar with 2nd person view writing style.

I have no comments on how the catholic church and the whole thing was depicted. I just assume the timeline to be of 1900 where all these fights between scientists/church/govt were prevalent? I felt sad for the pope's unsent letter especially at the end which he says he has forgotten his name. It felt like he's just like a marionette.

P.S. The reverse roles chapter was a cherry on top ;D <<less

I don't usually go into stories like this, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel disgusted and morally conflicted while reading the initial chapters. But I sincerely love this story now that I've finished reading it.

My advice would be:

1. Read the tags properly before reading it so you know what you're getting into.

2. Once you decide to start reading it, DO NOT stop during the first few chapters and give it a bad rating here. If it makes you uncomfortable then of course you can stop any... more>> time, but this is one of those pieces that doesn't do justice to the plot unless you finish it.

This story was so well constructed, and it made me appreciate the author so much because writing from a second person pov isn't very common and to do such a great job?? Incredible. Honestly once you finish reading it, it's simply going to linger in your mind and make you question everything, the conflict of not being able to say what is right or wrong. When I think a certain character did something wrong, I ask myself if I'd have been any better. Sometimes I think I would've done it differently but in the end we're all nothing but s*aves to our own minds and morals. So what I'm saying is, do not go into this just because you saw the bl tag, this is much more than that. This story deserves to appreciated much more and rated higher. <<less

ML was a veteran soldier who has demonic features triggered after he tried to take himself out with the demons after hearing everyone he knew died in a demon attack while he was fighting, and him being a demon led to lots of ab*se (tw) before ending up bought by MC. MC was raised with f*cked up beliefs and due to an accident ended up presumed dead and free from the institution he was raised in. He lives under a new identity and this is when he buys ML (presumed a demon at the time) on a whim. First half: MC discovers ML is basically a human just with a few physical demon features, changes the way he treats ML, they end up together. Second half: ML hears more about MC's f*cked-up past (which explain MC's strange actions) and MC unlearns cult-ish beliefs (as another reviewer puts it)

[collapse]

I saw a review saying they stopped reading after one of the bad endings, but I don't think they knew it wasn't the main plot. The BE's are very angsty and not everyone's cup of tea, but they are easy to skip since the author always puts the BE's before continuing with the main plot/correct choice, which I appreciate.

Things I liked:

MC's past is revealed bit by bit as we go, story has a lot of re-read value. The world-building is also really extensive (and quite dark but it makes sense). There's a huge world out there that hasn't been expanded on since the narration is limited to MC's pov (occasionally ML).

MC can be bizarre because of his past... there's moments where I was more in line with ML even though it's from MC's POV

Things I disliked:

MC's treatment of ML in the beginning was pretty turn off for me. But there wasn't as much worldbuilding done back then, things like attitudes towards demons as a result of the war against hell and progoganda of exisiting institutions hadn't really sunk in, so I think it's unfair for me to judge MC's actions based on standards from our world and not their world. Several times I almost stopped reading but I'm glad I didn't since it just got better and better.

I think if you want to see if you like the novel, read until the MC's backstory starts dropping at the very least. Overall even though the beginning was disturbing I absolutely love MC's character development. <<less
