After being reborn in the ancient times before the Great God-Conferment War, Li Changshou becomes a minor cultivator. He is neither destined for great things nor great woe. His only dream is to live a long life as a cultivator. In order to survive in the cruel Primordial Times, Li Changshou tries hard not to accumulate any karma—killing inevitably leads to feuds.

Thus, he always plans thoroughly before doing anything and never allows himself to walk into dangerous situations. He hides his trump cards well, trains himself in escape techniques, refines poisonous pills, and masters his mystical abilities. Before making any moves, he takes on an extremely steady demeanor. Yet, every move of his ends up earth-shattering. Once he is done, he will disappear without a trace.

Li Changshou originally plans to remain hidden and safe in the mountain. There, he is supposed to cultivate until he ascends to immortality. However, everything changed one year when his master seems to think that their lives are too peaceful… He takes in a junior sister…

Status: Completed
Edit 3: completed it still 4 stars, the problems I have with its are still the same and it was a trudge completing this story after I left it for a bit my only new critique is the ending, its not bad just could have been better from a personal taste position.

Spoiler

it ties up too nicely, I cand wanted him to die in the end but oh well it was good enough.

[collapse]

Edit 2: the translation really doesn't help the case for this story, its has been a problem for a while but in the last 70ish chapters the fact that the author is just throwing in random people and techniques and other things that we've had no prior knowledge of before just makes it so much worse.

Edit: If I could change my rating I would, though I still really enjoy this novel and it will probably always be one of my favourites, but 2 things though the story kind of grate on me.

The first being the author's unconscious bias against homosexuality, its to be expected from a ying-yang perspective and it's not flat out homophobic, the MC is actually relatively ok with it, however, the author regards it's as a choice and I can't remember the exact wording but it was something like "wrong way". Though saying that, the author was pretty progressive having one mainstay in the series being gender-neutral/fluid and a variety of heteros*xual people that present atypically in terms of masculinity and femininity.

The second gripe I have annoys me so much more than the above, this being linge, not the character herself but how shes used and portrayed.

Spoiler

Im gonna brake this down in parts because it's easier

  1. Linge will never mature, she'll always be the little sister pining over he senpai, it does sort of make sense when you realise that she's always on the mountain.
  2. SHE ALWAYS ON THE MOUNTAIN, this is annoying for a few reasons, like she only gets one opportunity to progress as a character, and even that is controlled and orchestrated by the MC.
  3. 2b. At this point in the story I kid you not she's literally the only person on the mountain, and to top that off she literally just stays in one room waiting for the MC to come back.
  4. to add to point 1, she's like a little girl but shes literally like a few hundred years old at this point but can't do anything autonomous, as I write this review, I keep thinking of the MC as a manipulative groomer (I'm only like 80% he's not)
  5. I know it won't happen but id rather her have a kind of realisation that she loves the MC as a family that way she can move on with her life and get a man that loves her, rather than being content with being someone s glorified maid getting paid with sutra writing and scraps of attention..

Original review:

Love it, the pacing may be a little slow for new readers but it's perfect for somebody that has been around the block, but saying that the pacing is only slow at the beginning of the story it picks up and eventually uses that foundation to well and truly create a comprehensive world to enjoy.

The characters are likeable and have some depth to them that is usually not present in the run of the mill story, the MC has redeemable qualities and isn't a mu*der happy psychopath, it is very reminiscent to the novel way of choices but has a lighter feeling to the story despite the reality of the event that is being for shadowed throughout the tale.

The MC isn't overpowered in the typical sense, there are many many people that can squash him and that's unlikely to change overall, which I love. The story has a real sense of scope, there's not really any plot armour that makes you groan, it's all about leverage and plotting, I've heard it being compared to grandmaster strategist, though I haven't read it yet, it may be a good read for others who have.

Give it a read. <<less

A bit draggy, that's why I dock a star, but what I read was enjoyable.

Not sure when relationship stuff is supposed to pickup, but where I'm at there's like three love interests and him being mostly uninterested because he doesn't want it to effect his cultivation.

I'd probably keep reading but at this point the translation issues others have pointed out are a bit too much for me. Like MTL levels of bad in places.

How to explain why I didn’t like this story without spoilers:

I’m not a fan of a character who suddenly blurts out secrets like “I had a past life” and then remark, “I’ve keep this secret for hundreds of years but somehow lost control” in order to inform the reader. It’s just half ass storytelling.

And that’s this entire story.

TL;DR: An amusing concept ruined by an uninspired plot, bad characters and a poor translation.

Translation is not very good and it seems to be getting worse. The plot is mostly boring. In 50 chapters, there was basically one fight and it wasn't detailed. The humor very sparse, I might have chuckled twice. Characters are the worst part of this whole thing.

Going into more detail. The MC is very very cautious bordering on parody. He always has a plan D, E and so on, if less than 10 he feels uncomfortable.... more>> He is also unique in other ways, and this part is amusing, but it isn't enough to base a whole novel on.

The MC doesn't feel real and is a weird sexless emotionless gadget. It is one thing to suppress yourself and another thing to feel nothing. There is something empty about someone whose main goal in life is to just live for tens of thousands or millions of years not really caring about anything. He sort of cares about his junior sister, but almost no one else in the sect and it doesn't seem that he cares about her as a person. It is weird and uncomfortable.

The master is embarrassing and useless and has no redeeming qualities. The fact the MC cares about him so deeply while the master doesn't actually understand him the least bit after more than 100 years together is just sad. The MC also lied to him for over 100 years. Why ? Why ? Who has that kind of a relationship with the one person you acknowledge as close to you ?

Plot itself is pretty boring at this point. There are hints of something happening, but it is happening too slowly. Reading about the inane behavior of his 1000+ year old martial aunt wearing a dress for the first time and putting on makeup broke me. It was too embarrassing to read. <<less

That was one heck of a story. The writing was great 10/10, translation was alright 7/10. It did get very exhausting to read because there was just sooo much happening at once. Like the density of the story was too much for me so I had to take breaks to finish. They didn’t really explain the cultivation levels and use a bunch of vocab that means nothing if you haven’t already read your fair share of Chinese novels, so this is not one for beginner readers. Also, ch 766 I... more>> could only find in MTL and it isn’t properly translated, so although webnovel and other sites say 765 was the last, you can find 766 with google. <<less

Decent novel that starts out well, but got a bit boring for me. I like his ideology of being steady and that's the main interesting part for me. The main focus of the novel is the schemes he uses to influence the major forces of the world. His cultivation improves pretty slowly and even then, it doesn't really matter since he's never really fighting anyone personally. Once his main realm of activities expands outside of his sect, I didn't enjoy it nearly as much. It's not a bad novel now,... more>> but not worth my time, dropped on ch336 <<less

Spoiler

it ends up being a prologue to the Monkey king's story (which is a prologue of Journey to the West) As someone who never really cared much about the world of Journey to the West before this, it really piques my interest and is making me search up these characters

[collapse]

It definitely is not your average face-slapping novel. MC is OP in strength but what sets him apart from everyone else is his wits and ability to scheme

The characters have believable personalities and the world is clearly built from the beginning (no random new realm, random new cultivation levels, random new characters to face slap)

Translation is MTL, but with no-one to edit it. This means halfway through a sentence the pronouns would get switched and suddenly the old man is now an old woman. It's still understandable for the most part though, but I can imagine the writing is much better in Chinese.

Currently, I've read up to Chapter 39 of "My Senior Brother is Too Steady".

In short, this is a story that is very realistic about what would I do if I was in such a situation, ie. Survival above all else. This is an interesting novel that's different from other novels, such as Emperor Dominion or The Second Ranker. The normal tropes are called out and attempted to dismantle, which is entertaining and refreshing.

There are others reviews about how this is a "strategic" read. I have seen elements and some themes... more>> that eluded to it; however, these are danced and implied rather than telling. There is the weight or the consequence of our MC's decisions we look and see how that affects him, one which we don't see in other light novel; however, I do note while it enhances the experience for me, this may not be for you.

This is an entertaining story and is a break from the other Chinese Novel. If you want tropes galore, please read Martial God Asura; if you want a MC who wants no drama or how he hasn't lost his sense of danger, read this. <<less

Well written, well translated, interesting initial concept, but the content matter is just not gripping.

Nothing particularly exciting happens, the MC spends 99% of his time either talking or watching other people doing things. The comedy falls a bit flat as well.
