After returning home, Song Qiming is rumored to be fighting for his family’s assets. Lin Yushu’s job is to prevent Song Qiming from doing so, but things get complicated when they end up in bed together. Song Qiming is an automotive engineer and Lin Yushu is a family office analyst, working for a company that provides wealth and family management services to ultra-wealthy families. The story revolves around the wealthy family’s automotive business, and while it is a story of wealth and business competition, it is not a typical cliché drama and has a sweet undertone.

characters:

mc: lin yushu

ml: song qiming

... more>> summary:

MC works in an automotive company as an investment manager and ML is an automotive engineer who recently returned to china to discuss acquisition of his car mod shop by the very same automotive company MC works in. they are initially on different camps as MC works under the ceo and ML is the ceo's cousin and implicitly trying to compete for the company and for inheritance. but they become acquainted outside of work and become neighbors, eventually ML takes a liking to him. ML tries multiple times to sway MC over to his side but MC only wants to maintain the status quo because his career is at stake. ML proves to be a very vicious and cunning businessman, rapidly rising through the ranks of the company and removing his family members from power. MC acknowledges ml's prowess and chose to side with him secretly

thoughts:
Spoiler

as expected of the author of restricted area, this was another masterpiece. its a business drama/office romance type story with a decent amount of faceslapping but MC and ML dont always have everything going their way. theyre both smart and cunning and their scheming made the whole thing a very engaging read.

(that said, the tl quality is... questionable at best. definitely edited mtl)

first off, I disliked a good portion of the cast. that isnt to say the writing was bad, but considering how all of the shao family are manipulative capitalists, thats to be expected. especially that shao zhenbang grandpa whom I just wanted to strangle with my own hands and send him to his deathbed faster. kudos to the author who really drove home the fact that gramps was a rich as*hole disconnected from reality and always surrounded by groveling yesmen all his life. demanding that MC marries his granddaughter before he hits the bucket was just... incredulous audacity.

but I think whats even more incredible is how the author made ML a morally grey character. even though he has countless charms and obviously written to be likeable, he's very ruthless and coldblooded when it comes to business and constantly employs underhanded tactics and unscrupulous means to get to his goals. I was lowkey shocked when he dragged a random side character into his mess and ruined his acting career over something that was completely out of his control. like bro didnt even hesitate. it wasnt even face slapping it was purely driven by self interest and kinda mean lmao..

that said he still has a touch of humanity with his dealings and thankfully MC knows how to reel him in. and near the end he gives up his conglomerate empire and chose a path that is more aligned with his own interests instead of pure profits and power.

also really like how MC was written with a bunch of quirks. hes got his cute little hobbies like car racing and collecting gold bars and cutely following ml's instagram like a fangirl, but also his less than desirable traits like being a workaholic just for the sake of climbing the socioeconomy ladder. because of the environment hes been exposed to, he places a lot of importance to social status, money, and how others perceive him and his performance. to the detriment of his health sometimes. but I like how further down the story he cares less and less about those things, to the point where he chose to leave his gilded career and work for his family business instead.

overall their relationship is very cute. I kinda felt like it came on a bit abruptly because MC was dragging his feet but suddenly they sleep together and hes is totally cool with it lmfao, but im not complaining tho theyre very sweet to each other afterwards. their car racing dates were very cute

+ I honestly thought their relationship was gonna sour after that stunt with ML acquiring mc's family business and MC tricking ML with a trap in their contract. the way it was handled was kinda weird but it showed the spirit of MC and ML not backing down from their own interests despite being together lol

Caught up with translations and rating this 5 stars to ramp up the low and few ratings because this deserves a read.

This is the same author as Restricted Area and Aesthetic Formula, so as usual with their style, the story is short and the pacing is absolutely wonderful, as there's no filler or dragged out scenes that come with longer stories. This author's works are always well researched with the topics they choose to write about -- architecture for Aesthetic Formula, and family business management and modified cars/racing for Meshing... more>> Effect.

Their main leads, as usual, are filled with charm and character. The wolf-like gong is shrewd and ambitious while the perfectionist shou is capable, secretly funny and cute despite his cold exterior. Believe it or not, the author never tried to reinforce these descriptions by "telling" such as writing them or having other characters think them, or god forbid, likening them to a kitten like many webnovel authors love to do. These are the personalities I can see for myself as a reader from the leads' interactions, which are a delight to witness. The ML's actions showcase his ambitious and bold personality as well as his scheming mind, and the author does not have to rely on descriptions of his previous feats (describing his accomplishments etc) before the story begins to let the reader understand why the MC thinks this person is a force to be reckoned with.

Spoiler

I love how well ML handles MC as well. One moment the MC gets angry, the ML deflects the topic and makes the MC shift his attention, then MC later realizes he got played by ML lmao. But this doesn't mean he's manipulative all the time, it's just like how someone really knows you well to be able to sense your mood shift and knows how to run when you're about to give it to them, then come back and apologize cutely later when you've cooled down and are ready to discuss rationally. This also enables ML to know what MC likes and how he's feeling without MC having to spill it out, since that's not in his nature (he keeps a lot of things from his big brother), which is why MC feels safe to act spoiled and asks for things from him and confide in him, both in business and emotional matters.

Also MC's just strangely funny, he keeps gold bars inside his safe and often counts his money like an old person, but these quirks aren't just for being funny and cute, they're fueled by a past event that changed him and made him so obsessed with success today, and I really like that detail.

[collapse]

Some might be skeptical about the way ML approaches MC, but the author also has a clever way of telling the readers that consent/the way the recipient feels is everything. See, aside from ML there's also ML's rival in family inheritance aka MC's boss. And right from the get-go we have a scene of him pretending to book the wrong hotel room to force MC into sleeping in the same room as him, and even touches MC (on his waist) who's pretending to be asleep. At this point MC thinks to himself that if he goes any further he's really gonna flip out at his own boss because he doesn't like his touch, but luckily the boss retreats. MC then rejects his advances many times, hinting as clearly as possible despite the boss being his immediate superior. Now cut to ML, who goes into MC's room when MC invites him (and the first one who crossed into ML's bedroom first was MC), gives friendly touches and is flirty when he decides he's gonna pursue him. However, in contrast to the boss, MC never felt uncomfortable by his touch or his advances. (He even thinks it to himself in hindsight that he seemed okay with ML touching him, and he liked touching ML too). And the reason is ML's sort of his idol and shares the same hobby as him (as stated in the first chapters that MC went past the Chinese internet firewall just to follow ML's instagram and learned many tidbits of his life, including his dog's name). So if he doesn't like it, he would've stopped ML entirely since he even stands up to his boss who could have a say in his promotion to CEO position.
Spoiler

people might be upset about the drunk one nightstand. And honestly it's dubious consent but MC doesn't feel, like, even the tiny bit bad about it since he reasons that he was the one who initiated the whole thing and kept urging ML who tried to refuse at first. But yeah, this is certainly one of those gray-area things

[collapse]

The supporting characters also have their own agenda, driven by personal interests or emotions, and it doesn't feel like the world revolves around the main leads. Overall, this author's works seriously fit my preferences - well-paced, well-researched and filled with fleshed out characters, definitely will follow their works in the future. <<less

2.5 rounded up for the trans. Dropped. Not for me. I think if you really like romance, you can ignore the business things and enjoy this. Tbh I wanna call HR for the MC, but unfortunately I don't think he's offended like I am lol by the ml's consistently pushing his boundaries (whether through rules or physical). The ML will literally do whatever he wants no matter if the MC SAYS he doesn't want the ML to do that because the ML knows how to hit with a stick and... more>> give candy right afterwards. Again, not for me.

I don't like romances that are based on bothering the MC consistently with things they didn't agree to to get their attention; to be fair, the ML is smart about it and does know when he's on the cusp of being too much for the MC (for me I'm just picky about respecting boundaries).

The second point that made me give up this novel is that MAAYBE IDK what investment director/managers in big rich family businesses are supposed to be doing and how they have to act, and maybe this is completely accurate.. but idk man. Why is the MC absolutely responsible for anything in the multi-corp company that may fluctuate the stocks like uh... I just think the levell of responsibility on the MC is farfetched bc I think the CEO / vice / president / chairman whatever are there ones who would be most at risk and in charge of that stuff. And should be the ones who are at risk to lose their jobs if they f*ck up a merger bc they're the LEADERS

It's like bc he manages the investments that he's the whole companies' / family's advisor, assistant, management, middleman, peacemaker, conflict resolution department etc... Like? Huh? I'm sorry but that logic is just hard for me to understand with his job position. Even if the MC keeps saying he has to do more than his position.. but the things he's responsible for and things he has to do it's like IS THIS COMPANY RICH OR NAH BC WHY IS THIS LIKE A STARTUP WITH NO MONEY?? HIRE ASSISTANTS, SECRETARIES, RISK MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT IDK BUT wtf ? I can't personally get over this logic in the novel and maybe this is realistic my bad. Lol.

So yea if you don't get bothered by that stuff you'll probably like this. <<less

Quite a good, tight, mature and hot story!~

I really like that this author focuses on slightly older male leads with life experience and maturity. Even if they are characters, like in this story, who are light on relationship experience, they are seasoned enough not to engage in the stereotypical dumb relationship misunderstandings. Yes there are conflicts, especially since both the MC and ML are competitive by nature, but even at the point where they are the most at odds over the business, they don't stop working on their relationship or... more>> just walk away in a huff. Also they both admire each other as much for their smarts and cunningness in the business world as their physical appearance. They strive to be on equal standing with each other and suceed.

I have to admit I got a teensy bit lost about the intricacies of Chinese family held businesses/holding companies/family etiquette but not enough to distract from my enjoyment of the story. I also liked the addition of the racing cars. Don't see that very much in danmei. Especially both the MC and ML being interested in the sport. I do appreciate the author's attention to details of the business and car racing details without making it obtrusive to the plot.

The author has a really nice smooth pace to their writing so that even the "angsty" section didn't interrupt the flow of the story. Plus the story was just super sexy! Give it a try. <<less

Race cars + hot guys? Yes please!! ⸜ (。˃ ᵕ ˂) ⸝♡ You definitely have to read this if you like smart characters and mature relationships. It's a tightly woven and well-written story that I couldn't put down!

The MC works in a wealthy family conglomerate as an acting CEO for their family affairs office. The ML is a teasing and scheming superstar engineer who has recently returned to China from his home in Germany to negotiate his company's acquisition by his family's conglomerate. The MC and ML have a shared interest... more>> - racing cars. I love their dialogue and their relationship - they both work hard to realize their ambitions and yet there are no misunderstandings and no drama when their paths conflict.

I really appreciate how this is a very straightforward story without any passages dwelling on the beauty, awesomeness, or cuteness of the characters. I love how the interactions between the characters give you a very good insight into the characters themselves. Since this is a story about power struggles in a wealthy family, the author also explains the business aspects so that readers (like me) who are not well-versed in the business world can follow the story easily. <<less

A novel about the relationship between two mature men who know themselves is so satisfying. The requisite angst, drama and misunderstandings are kept to a minimum; instead, there’s just a slow, gentle progression to love.

Yes, it was filled with corporate intrigue and skullduggery, but for me, that added to the story. These men were incredibly smart and forward thinking, and I was surprised by the level of craftiness they displayed in heading off the evildoers at every turn.

I loved it.

Two strong and crafty leads, definitely my first 2024 novel that I've enjoyed so far.

Now I moving away from those cubrearing, cutesy novels and more of these strong personalities storyline. The cars and motor give a fresh twist to the rather saturated field of xianxia and school love :)

I'm a fan of JDM cars and found it interesting. This is mainly about the power struggle within a conglomerate family. The ML is very smart and scheming but he does genuinely fall in love with the MC. Overall good read.

It was a pretty solid read. I liked the maturity between ML and MC and how they maintained their relationship despite external factors. It's not much to write home about but it was enjoyable and chill nonetheless. A decent novel.
