I love fantasy novels involving CN mythology, so this one should've been really up my alley. I got mixed feelings about this novel though, because the first half of the story is great, while the rest are quite disappointing.

This novel tells a story on the current Meng Po and King Yan in Chinese three realms. The author adapted a lot of characters from legends, but here's the catch, each of them has some kind of crazy twist and spunks. Meng Po is a beautiful silly short-sighted tempramental young woman (not... more>> old aunt), the Night God always lost his way, and if that's not crazy enough, the Ox-Head and Horse-Face are basically a couple involved in illegal drug dealing. Yep, you heard that right.

The first 100-ish chapters are great. It focused on Meng Po and King Yan's first experience as mortals with some foreshadowing about their forgotten past before coming to underworld. The author could use some improvement in worldbuilding, but it's a good satisfying read.

The last few hundreds chapters, however, are not quite as enjoyable to read. The plot got all entangled and confusing because the author just so decided to add a lot of subplots on other CN mythology stories and combined them into one. The story got too dragged on and there were dog blood dramas suddenly appearing out of nowhere that made ML and MC quite hateful. It's clear as day that the author didn't map out the story clearly from the beginning.

Starting from the 200-ish story, the author made it clear that ML is basically a villain. Like a serious cold-blooded killer villain.

Spoiler

He never hesitated to kill tens of thousands of innocent beings (humans, demons, ghosts, gods) and sacrificed their souls (so they couldn't reincarnate) annually so MC could keep her body (since her body was destroyed because ML ate her in their first lives). He deliberately flooded towns with thousands of people he governed for MC.

[collapse]

This guy is sick and should've been held accountable for the killings, but the author just decided to focus on the sweet sugary romance between this killer and MC. MC, on the other hand, after knowing that ML killed a lot of innocent lives for her, just shrugged it off without feeling guilty. Honestly, by the end of the story, I could only see MC and ML as ungrateful self-centered gods that always trying to escape from their responsibilities and refused to be punished for their actions.

The character development is just not good. Sure, the author tried to give them enough depth, but it turned out to be a shallow self-justification for their actions. MC is basically just like your young rich spoiled lady who's arrogant and ignorant of anything happening outside of herself and ML. ML is an ambitious cold-blooded killer that'd do anything for power and MC, including sacrificing the whole world (I am not even kidding here, he literally destroyed a world for MC).

I gave 4 stars in consideration for the earlier chapters and the author's effort in research and worldbuilding. If I have to rate the last hundred chapters though, it'd only be 3 stars at most. <<less

I can't stop raving about this translator's work with this story! First, the story is still setting up but so far I'm liking our female lead; she's cranky and beautiful! I am really tired of white lotus innocent white fairy types, so let me tell you, I fist pumped. Anyways, moving on! We've got a good cast of secondary characters as well, I'm really enjoying the humor in the story right now. I know it's gonna eventually disappoint me with the whole "veer into drama" thing, but for now, we're... more>> still lighthearted and hijinksy.

I really want to give huge props to the translator, they're a one-man team and they're doing SO WELL. The notes at the end with background chinese lore, the impeccable diction and grammar, the translation of tone that just makes me laugh, and the consistent updates. Listen to me. MTL is like, the McDonalds of reading these stories. But when someone actually has a deeper understanding of the story and gives their time to bring us the story and does it this good? I weep and dance a blessing ritual for the translator and their generations to come.

So uh yeah, give this story a read! I'll come back when we're further in for an update but again, so far, really good! <<less
