Kidnapped Dragons

– The planet [Earth] has entered the abnormal state [Apocalypse].

– You have failed in saving the Earth. The Authority, [Vintage Clock (EX)] rewinds the world’s time.

For Yu Jitae, it was a message he had seen many times.

It was tiresome.

It would have been great had he died with everyone else.

But he couldn’t, for his authorities that made him the strongest existence, brought him back in time whenever he died.

And even with his strength, he couldn’t protect the broad earth against the maddened dragons.

– The world’s time will soon begin.

As the clock resumed ticking in the direction it should, his 7th iteration came to a start.

Fortunately, he finally had the gist of it.

Finally finished. There are flaws but the focus of characters and their growth are hard to beat.

5 star.

Great story, many unexpected twists and definitely brings the reader on an emotional journey. Wonderful translation by RainingTL, I really can’t remember noticing any time where the translation detracted from the story, which is tough to do!

I got no clue why this get so many good reviews. There is nothing special about this at all. Like it is not the worst or anything but this is nowhere near something called best novel ever, I would give it 3 but I think other reviews got me cover.

I mean, the novel isn't for me personally, but I think it was a good premise. I wanted a bit more action, but this was just something I read on a whim. Anyways, the story makes sense, though the MC's goal isn't exactly clear right now. There are some plot holes, which could just be attributed to some lazy writing.

Spoiler

i.e. The clone that goes to work for the MC everyday. Like, is nobody not gonna see him at all? Surely it can't be so coincidental that when somebody is out for their lunch break, they never spot the MC while he was supposed to be doing something else. Also, since his name is partially on the news by now, how has nobody from his workplace noticed him yet? Even though he's just a guardian, he's a guardian for a famous person. You can't tell me that someone from his workplace didn't see him on the news.

Stands head and shoulders over peers of the genre. It's no wonder many left rave reviews. There are some aspects it does really really well.

Character Relationships: This author is a master at crafting and developing characters. The growing, shifting emotions as the dragons grow and the protagonist interacts with them are close to perfect. Amazing work! Perfect mix of comedy, sincerity, drama and slice-of-life. Romance probably could have been a bit better fleshed out in early developing stages, but it was still very good! I don't cry often, but this... more>> novel directly smashed the tear glands.

Plot: The plot has been planned out carefully by the author in advance. It's very intricate and plenty of twists are buried, ready to astonish readers. This novel earned its five star reviews well. However, while the character development plans and big picture are done, the author isn't so good at technical details. Especially the time loop mechanics, how authorities work, providence vs non-providence, how the timelines interact, I had to just turn off my brain and let it go with suspension of disbelief. In at least one case, the author completely disregards all previous mechanics:

Spoiler

Before a certain regression, a character got maimed. Let's lie and say... an injured lung. They really really regretted having that 'lung' shattered. Somehow, that 'lung' remained damaged after regression, even after the character returned to their old body. A classic example of contrived drama. I can understand mental trauma or soul injuries, but physical injuries staying? That's too much BS...

[collapse]

In addition, a few key plot threads are left hanging. The readers that try to think 'what's next' are left unsatisfied. Major spoilers:

Spoiler
    1. Lifespan issues. This was left fully unaddressed, and we aren't sure if the protagonist will die long before his wife. The readers have room to 'hope' that isn't the case though. Who knows, maybe the overlap from regressions somehow multiplies lifespan? BM saw many many Yu Jitaes after hair examination. Or maybe he has authorities/blessings we don't know about that can let him live longer? He lost so many abilities by the time epilogue came around though... But all of that is in the 'guessing' or 'hoping' realm. Never is it stated he doesn't live a normal human lifespan.
    2. The black dragon race issues. This also is left unaddressed, and readers are left knowing the next one thousand years are likely to still be agonizing for Bom, especially if Yu Jitae passes away in a few decades. Likely not as bad, considering Yu Jitae regains a bit of his former strength, but... amazingly, this is one of the few protagonists weaker at the end than he is at the beginning.
    3. The white bird's fate. The smaller split half of a soul. Either it remains dead, or author never mentioned it reviving. Does regression even revive it, considering it's outside?
[collapse]

Action: Decent action scenes. The novel doesn't focus much on action, but when action is needed, the author delivers with nice combat scenes. <<less

The story is good, and while in the slice of life genre, it's really about family-building and parenting. MC is basically PTSD'd by his regressions and has to relearn emotions from the ground up while taking care of what he thinks of as ticking time bombs for the apocalypse. The story makes good use his regressions: he is OP and uses it logically for someone in his position. His developing relationship with each of the four dragons is funny and heartwarming. The drama at the end is well-conceived and leaves... more>> a bittersweet but effective conclusion to all the characters' arcs. Probably the best completed, fully translated (though unofficial) Korean light novel.

Now, onto the translation. We all know that the standard for Asian light novel translation is super low because translators are either unpaid or massively underpaid. We give a lot of latitude because it's a hard and unrewarding job. I don't mean to take anything away from the difficult job the translator probably had, but it's a key part of how you experience the novel so I think it's important to talk about.

By the standard of the light novels I've read, this translation is only passable for the first quarter of its run, maybe a 6.5/10 (maybe a 3/10 for English-language translation without the handicap of judging it as a light novel translation), though it gets better as it goes on. You always know generally what's happening. However, the language is extremely awkward at the beginning, with literally translated Korean idioms that make no sense and a clear Aussie English base that makes several things much more confusing. Specific details like ranks, organization, and things like this have little clarity. Some sections, especially Yeorum combat sequences, are downright confusing. The translation quality improves as it goes on in this respect, but some of the early chapters are often barely above MTL. You grow to like some weird things like translating 'golden dragon' as 'baby chicken'. However, one big annoyance is using 'it' instead of 'her' for the dragons early on, while occasionally using 'her' in the same chapter--there isn't a lot of consistency. I know this is quick light reading, but it's hard to look past all the things that could've been easily corrected with a native English proofreader, even though such a thing probably wasn't feasible. Like I said, you can still understand it, but I would say the strength of the story kind of miraculously shines through the translation rather than the translation having anything to do with elevating the enjoyment of the story. <<less

Action in this is very good as the MC is much too OP. However, the action scenes are few and far between.
This is because the main focus is how MC manages the daily lives of what are essentially 4 young kids going to school and how they deal with their day-to-day lives, which gets rather stale in this case.

Overall it is well written, and the character development is great, but I would not read it again personally.

This novel was an amazing ride from start to finish. Some may have issues with characters like Bom or Yeorem, but all that evens out by the end (at least for me). Many things won't be explained until the very end, but it still keeps you entertained with the daily lives of each character. The development of them and their home is so natural and fun to read. A masterpiece to re-read in the future.

So.. I finished it. This is not the first time I read this story, in fact I dropped it the first time I read it. But on a whim I thought to myself, "well, lets reread that story about dragons or something. 4.6 stars, there's bound to be something good out of that right?" Yes. Yes there are.

"Kidnapped Dragons" is fundamentally a slice of life story, it has surprisingly deep and intriguing actions, but it is there to reinforce how precious the slice of life part of the story is.... more>> The main character and the dragons felt real and believable. No character felt forgotten and each have their own 'arc' so to say. It intertwined beautifully with the overall narrative and never felt forced or jarring

The main reason I dropped it the first time is because I thought it would be a typical feel-good pseudo harrm story. But I am geniunely surprised how it turns out and I can safely say I enjoyed it. Honestly, "Kidnapped Dragons" is an awful title for a great novel, but it didn't lie <<less

I haven't completed the story yet, I stopped somewhere midway while there were still not enough chapters translated, and it wasn't interesting and engaging enough for me to read it as ongoing or return to the story. I would rate it at 3.5 out of 5. Just like it's common for Korean stories, the game system is sh*t with very little thought put into it. The characters start to show some personality only after 50 chapters or so, but the main plot moves fairly slowly. IDK where anyone saw "great... more>> world building", it's literally bare-bones even after 100 chapters. What I agree with most reviewers in is that it has a lot of fluff, but that's a con for me. There's no harem (which is a con), btw, only one of the dragons is a love interest and let's be honest, with the protagonist like this, romance could only be meh. To rephrase another reviewer:

Cons:

    • A lot of slice of life fluff. Meh.
    • Not enough "saving the world" stuff so far, and lackluster action.
    • No progression system, or actual power progression for that matter, the worldbuilding is severely lacking.
    • The MC has a very bland personality.
    • No harem.
Pros:

    • Dragons start to have some personality later in the story.
    • Other reviewers say that there's drama and unhealthy relationships, just what I love, and maybe I should continue reading to see how things are going.
    • They also say that there's much less fluff and useless stuff in the second part of the story, so...

First time rating novel here, but that's how much of an impact it left on me. This story focuses more on the character instead of the plot.

The plot is kind of your run-of-the-mill regression story but it's decent and I was fine with it but I personally feel like there were some plot holes. However, the relationship & growth of the characters are the focus of the story and it was good from beginning till the end.

This novel's beyond good. It is not just a story, but a ride through various emotions. Every dragon has its own different tendencies and story. Sometimes the story is a slice of life, and sometimes it is action with immense gore. MC does not seem human at first but becomes better due to the dragons he hates.

The story is very confusing at times because different acts start somewhat abruptly but the author has provided the reasons for all in the later revelations.

This novel is better than a lot I've read... more>> and is highly recomended. <<less

This is the second COMPLETED Light Novel I have ever managed to finish reading. There is a reason for that. It’s good. Really good. Here’s why:

Characters: All the dragons are unique in some way and present a character who actually has personality. Add in other side characters and you have startling realism for a LN.

Plot: The story is quite good, not the best, but good enough to keep me enraptured. I’ve never been a fan of flashbacks, but this novel did it somewhat well. Also, the ending was VERY satisfying.

Setting/World... more>> Building: It’s nothing special, yeah there is some decent imagery used, but it wasn’t the best nor worst world building I’ve read.

Translation: Excellent translation! Very few errors. Rain did god’s work!

Emotion: This novel made me emotional. It’s ironic because the protagonist is so bland and apathetic. However, slowly watching this bland protagonist regain his humanity through contact with the dragons is heartwarming.

Realism: Yeah, OP MC kills everything, but that’s not the point of the story. The story is about the relationships formed between Yu Jitae and the dragons. Plot armor didn’t make me hate this. It felt genuine. <<less

Considering the s*upid title and unoriginal time rewind premise, I thought it'd be some harem with an OP protag story, and wasn't expecting much, but boy was I wrong.

It starts mostly as a slice of life with enough actions to keep it interesting but it becomes so much more, it's one of the rare book where the slice of life part is more than just feelgood fluff, it's integral to the plot.

The more the story progresses, the more you start caring about characters, everyone of them, their emotions and growth,... more>> all well done, and at some point the book gut punches you and doesn't let go until the end, keeping you on edge.

This is a character study and a story of redemption more than anything else, showing in depth about how the characters feel and why.

Overall Great characters, all of them, and Great char developments, Great plot, Great ending, just a Great Book.

A must read on this site. <<less

I have been reading light novel from 2014 and so far Kidnapped Dragon is among the top 3 of my list, If you haven't read this novel, you really should try to read it. When I read the title I thought it was gonna be a harem novel like other mediocre title, but I was wrong. The character building felt very natural, everyone have their depth of story, the slice of life really full of warmth, and lots of plot twist. MC didn't tend to ambush his OP power and... more>> his memory from regression like other regression novel.

10/5 for me, I thought I wouldn't be able to find great title after reading the second coming of gluttony but I was wrong. Thank you much for the hard work writer and translator. <<less

The story was wonderfully done, it was probably one of the best thought out novels I have read. With everything coming to a close and everything or almost everything being explained.... more>>
Spoiler

For the time paradox you could think of it as only Bom remembering it because it would be a different timeline or it could be just memories she got after he went back to help her. Because if you remember she would remember after every reset.

The only thing I did not like was probably that the blue dragon didn't get to call him dad (would have been nice).

I would 100% recommend the novel, even if you don't like the first 100 chapters I think after that it starts getting better and better as it goes on. <<less

4/5. Followed since about ch 108 was released, finished until all after stories.

First, imo, everything that built up to the "first" ending (so first sign of ending) was was stunningly vivid and logically structured. Character and plot development took reasonable steps and was synchronous.

Second, I really liked the psychological element in it. Except for the sad section of the ending, (imma call it that cuz no spoilers), the internal struggles seemed real and natural. Not just some author devised trait that MC will have to live with.

Third, 400+ chapters... more>> is not a lot but it was quite a plenty reading. Upvote long chapters.

Lastly, ending.
Spoiler

tbh, I don't quite like the plot twist. And the emotions best the end were quite forced. Also seemed a bit rushed because the plot holes that were hard to find until this point started wandering everywhere.

As someone who waited for the entire ending to realize before reading on, it feels a little as though the original intention or ending that was being built was misplaced. It sounds like I'm just defining "plot twist" from the dictionary but what I mean is that the twist felt more like a different story then an unexpected ending/result. Yes there were indeed clues that built up to the new post-twist ending, but, oh yes, like seeing fairy-tale happily ever after ending in a horror movie; that's just not what I signed-up for kind of feeling.

[collapse]

I would still say the overall story is amazing, despite my opinion of the ending. Would recommend reading. Not 5 star can be counted to the ending, but it's more about the flow. It just got too crude later to be counted as the same quality as the mind-blowing start middle late. <<less

The only flavour of the month novel deserving it's rating. It's main strength lies on its 5 main characters and how the author goes it his way in developing them.

The only downside is the iffy translations.

This is a weird mix of fluffiness and extremely disturbing content. The character development is definitely a slow burner. At first, I didn't like the MC because I thought he was another edgelord korean protagonist, but now I feel like he's so edgy that it doesn't have an impact anymore, which is intentional from the author. As of chapter 66, however, it's clear to me that the balance is tilting more toward wholesomeness. I definitely recommend reading it to form your own opinion, but I think it's worth it.
