A hilarious showbiz read about a living, breathing ball of fluff pretending to be human (canon, MC's fans are divided into 2 factions regarding his appearance: hamster or peach) while being bullied by his System. If you want light read and slapstick comedy with overworked managers, crazy fans, and even crazier family members and friends (almost BL fan service), then read this novel.

Han Baekya is an endearing protagonist, although sometimes I question whether he realizes he's an adult, not a baby (it works out, since he's of the maknae... more>> line). He is not the smartest of the lot, but very kind and also very prideful, causing him a lot of trouble with the people around him, in addition to the system missions attempting to kill him.

At the beginning of the novel, not much world building is made, but later on, author tried his best patching up loose ends. The details and arcs are more grounded to reality compared to other novels of the same kind, leaning more on personal stories rather than the fantasy parts (MC is so scatterbrained, he often neglects/forgets/missclick the System).

Spoiler

More emphasis on the experiences as an idol e.g. Sasaeng (stalkers), deteriorating health and injuries, dating rumors, infighting and jealousy, trainees' hardship (like Jiho starting at the tender age of 8), depression and su*cide, differences in living standards, among others

[collapse]

Most readers compare it to Debut or Die (DOD), and to be honest, it's not a copycat. I don't see similarities between them aside from how both maknaes came from California and both MCs are main vocals. As for how enjoyable the story is, I'd say it's a matter of preference.

Spoiler

I am more inclined to Debut or Die as Park Moondae is intelligent and observant, and the other characters are like real people with real thoughts and complexities. The writing of the author is so good, it makes you feel like you are within the story. TeStar will grow on you, same with VITIC and the other characters because they are decently written.

In comparison, Sunfish is more 2D. Han Baekya is a standard MC, an airhead whose life is the main focus of the novel, rather than DASE (his group) and its members (though there are chapters dedicated to them). He is loved by the universe and the world revolves around him, so everything works out for him (and I think if not for the system, he would have walked a flowery path on his own). Though the side characters' stories are fleshed out, the built up of camaraderie between DASE felt somewhat lacking.

An example of this is about Harang, how he was replaced by MC before debut, but the author never properly wrote about how the other members felt about him or his absence (or showed foreshadowing) until hundreds of chapters later. It's like author was so focused with the System, he forgot about human relationships and belatedly remembered to reinsert it back into the story. I also don't like how Baekya deals with red flag characters, whenever they do something without his consent, in the guise of being soft-hearted or funny

[collapse]

I think if I read Sunfish first before DOD, I would have enjoyed this more. It's just that my preference leans more to the more intense, more dramatic DOD, that's why it's hard to make an objective review. The fantasy/system part of the story is also vaguely covered, leaving readers with a lot of unanswered questions. All in all, the novel is decent enough to merit a 4. <<less

Very wholesome and heart-warming. It is a feel-good read about a K-pop idol with a system. The translation is very readable. I binge-read the entire 58 chapters and it was worth it. There are laughs and hard work.

Spoiler

At around chapter 57 or 58, things get serious and there is conflict within the group. Up until then, it is mainly fluff and entertaining stuff.

This was a fun read overall. Our Baek-Ya is a total cutie. He's a shy introvert that doesn't really like attention. Makes you question why he became an idol, but he seems to enjoy these idol activities on the outside, lol. (Inside, shriveling up from panic from these quests.)

Spoiler

His nickname is Hamster and Peach.

This is so cute. The MC is so endearingly refreshing in his genuine reactions and flailing, unlike the other MCs of translated novels of this genre. Don’t get me wrong—I love Hoyun and Moondae, but it’s interesting to read about a MC who doesn’t have the experience with fandom and idol hood like both of them do. I find his fluster adorable.

This novel is a blast, the MC is a refreshing change from the usual OP protagonist. He's a bit of a klutz and a scaredy-cat. I found myself getting annoyed with him at times, but overall he's not bad. Anyway, it's a fun read.

Similar to Debut or Die, this story follows an idol with a system. Unlike DoD, this one has a silly protagonist who isn't particularly clever or sly. The story focuses excessively on the interaction between the protagonist and the system, to the point where it becomes apparent the author is just using the game element as filler for a lacking plot. He whizzes through idol training and plops into an idol group because of serendipity. The plot is shallow and the MC's motivations are non-existent.

I had to stop reading at... more>> chapter 8 before I threw my laptop out the window. <<less

Has similar vibes to the Debut or Die, except it's more light in tone and more focused on seeing the idols from the audience's point of view. The concentration on the fan reactions, focus on the activities and interactions that irl K-Pop fans would enjoy, and emphasis on how much they are doing what they do for the fans makes this feel like a series written for the K-Pop fans rather than for fans of entertainment novels.

Mostly fluff, not so much drama as of Chapter 44. If you wish, you... more>> too can live the life of a K-Pop stan vicariously by reading this novel. <<less

One of my favorite novel that still fun even being re - read for several times! (It’s my third times and I following the latest updates too)

It’s one of transmigration system fantasy Idol novels, a trope that apparently become popular lately. There’s a game like system here too, this time it’s full mission gacha.

Despite the familiar trope, this novels still worth to read for the one who like light, fun and cute novels :) the relationship between characters also great and the conflict also not heavy. The characters also... more>> have interesting personalities that not feels two-dimensional, sometimes I feel like stanning a real Idol hahaha

The storytelling pretty much typical Idol novels that following the Idol’s activities and fans reactions with splash of fantasy from the system. The story pace is not too fast but not dragging too long too, it’s comfortable like a flowing water.

The author also like to use cute and fun description that enhance the unique feeling when reading it and the MC... ohmygoshhe’ssocute *ehem* Han Baekya have different charm from typical Idol novel’s MC I read so far. He’s not the most smart, strategic or anything but he’s innocence and sometimes bold action really charmed me

Overall, this novel is worth to read and highly recommended!

Spoiler

For you who like to see MC suffering from system, please mind you this novel system makes him nosebleed, cough blood, faint, even coma!!

I absolutely LOVE this novel! It was recommended to me on a whim but I never thought I'd be enjoying and laughing out loud multiple times! Truly a light read, and a healing idol novel that you can't see a lot these days. There are a lot of angsty ones that aren't my type, but this was a fresh breath of air! The MC, Han Baekya is truly lovable and charming! Our cute peach hamster~

It reminds me of a mixture of LCF and Debut or Die because ... more>>
Spoiler

he bleeds a lot HAHA! HE faints too XD and gets the people around him so worried and concerned they become so attached to him LMFAO

[collapse]

His relationship with the members are so GOOOD the dynamics are insane! What I love about this too is that it's not only focused on Baekya x Dase members only, other dynamics of the group are portrayed!! Though I did mention it was fluffy, there are some angsty tid bits that get you caught off guard xD So read the novel to get it. <<less

It's all about cutey cute MC, but not in a good way. I mean he is 21 and done with military service before going back, but the way the story developed, he became someone at the age of middle school, hoping others to handle things but somehow he always got the chance to shine through, so naive and easy to tease, how come you survive military service with that kind of attitude? The author is quite inconsistent, only focuses on their cute idols harem relationship, where is MC family and... more>> friends? After putting them in the early chapter for the convenience of the story, they never tell the story of them again, I mean MC family is only his nuna, but MC never had any interaction with his nuna, not even at his high school graduation.

Okay, I need to stop, my review change into a rant. The story is easy to read but so far, it is one-dimensional. I can't help but compare this to DoD and it falls behind. <<less

So far not very impressed.

A lot of description of what's happening is missing. It could just be the author rushing through the introduction to get you understanding the game elements before the main story starts.

Not enjoying it compared with other idol novels.

A heartwarming simple story. You can’t really feel the ‘sunfish’ dying when stressed within the story as you know everything is going to be alright, so you have to go in without expecting high engagement. The characters aren’t really well developed but the simplicity is heartwarming.

Pretty good time killer! Just a cute, light hearted idol novel, leaning more into the slice of life genre. Each chapters are pretty short and sweet so its a good novel if you're looking for an easy read.

Not recommended for binging since the pacing is pretty slow and it can get a bit boring since nothing dramatic is happening. There is a system and a "Debut or Die" scenario but its a much light hearted version, in fact the system is barely mentioned and kinds forgettable lol which I think... more>> is a bit of a waste but it is what it is.

Cute sunfish MC as well and he's hilarious, I like his relationship with the members but I do wish they get more developed later in the story since as of right now, they're just superficial characters!

Highly recommended for light reading! Esp if you're looking for a fluffy idol novel. <<less

Very fun read! I love the cast of characters as well as our beloved peach 🍑 I really like it when characters tease each other, make each laugh, angry, cry, and support each other. The interactions are heart-warming

Our peach here isn’t like other isekai MC. He isn’t calculated or cold. He tries his best and is very wholesome. I hope to see DASE be #1 idol group, they deserve it!
