I had this novel on my 'to read list' for a few months. Last week I decided to read it but not before looking at the reviews. Once I did, I wondered why there were so few of reviews. After reading 23 chapters I know why

The premise for this novel is good but it is boring. It is not even a bad novel, it is just a boring one. I guess if you don't mind reading a slice of life, then you'll probably like this.

MC has his funny moments but... more>> the only time I found him interesting was in the prologue

The three princesses are boring as well. And the reason for them becoming obsess with MC is that he is strong, nothing else.

Great concept, boring execution <<less

Summary:

An interesting premise and characters that had the potential to be an intriguing regression story with its own twist but the author fumbles the bag with the actions that the main character takes that tend to not make much sense and break immersion.

Detailed:

Spoiler

The main character is introduced as a powerful knight holding back the enemy as his princess escapes at the end of a power struggle in which his faction loses. He takes pride in his honorable sacrifice for his princess to have a chance of survival but is confused when in his dying moment his princess returns to him to instead die with him instead of living without him. The MC then wakes up as his younger self on the day of his graduation from the knight academy. In the ceremony the MC manages to impress the three princesses attending (including his 'future' princess) with his outstanding skill and they each offer to take him on as their knight and offer him various perks but plot twist the MC refuses all of them to instead take up post as a capital defense knight which is a glorified police officer. Now I quite like this action since the MC is not only a fresh graduate from knight school but is also a commoner so it makes sense for him to not immediately join a princess faction and face political backlash but instead take a modest position and gain achievement and I thought the author made a good story choice but no, his real intention in joining the cdk was to instead have a cozy and relaxing life this time around. This is the first immersion break for me as a supposedly loyal and honorable knight who gains a second chance at life wants to instead just relax and let the story play itself out without him. This is a major fumble but I thought the author had a chance to salvage it as the princesses were really into him for rejecting them and so they had a chance to rope him in later on in the story so I kept reading.

The second fumble occurred when the MC finds one of the princesses (in disguise) being scammed by a powerful merchant. The merchant was getting aggressive when the MC stepped in to resolve the dispute. Instead of going full on oblivion guard mode "stop right there criminal scum" and do some political maneuvering for political favors or anything, the MC instead performs an impromptu on-site investigation, into an on-site trial, into an on-site punishment for violating the law. Like author please, you described the cdk as a glorified police but here they look like an unstoppable judge/jury/executioner force ala robocop style. At this point the author has not described the role of the cdk, other than a patrol around the capital, nor the command structure, other than two seniors who came to haze him on his first day, and now shows the cdk as the highest authority in the capital which is, in my opinion, bad writing.

The third fumble occurred when the MC and his senior in the cdk were invited to the birthday party of one of the princesses. During the party the head knights of two princesses were to duel for entertainment. The duel escalates until they start using their magic aura and placing the (high-ranking) guests around in danger. The MC starts worrying that if nobody stops them then the blame for this disaster would be placed on his senior sitting beside him. The MC seriously thought that the blame for two head knights going overboard would be placed not on the knights themselves, not on their respective princesses, not even on the active duty guards that are watching this unfold, but on the off duty guest capital defense knight senior who btw is just one year his senior. Uhm.. Ok? But why? The author doesn't explain. And the way the MC chose to stop the dueling knights was dumb too. See, the MC wants to hide his power so he decides to somehow create a smokescreen on the stage, have a dramatic entrance to exchange dialogue with the knights and ask them to surrender, and when they inevitably refuse he defeats one knight with ease and then the next one with a bit more difficulty but then uses the second knight's spear to collapse the whole stage and in the confusion he places the two knights and their weapons so it looks like they defeated each other. Masterful plan. Absolutely brilliant. /Sarcasm

After that immersion break I was done with this story.

[collapse]

In Conclusion:

For me, I require immersion to enjoy a story and while I can usually tolerate a couple of minor immersion breaks or maybe even one major immersion break, this author goes overboard with them and I feel like he could use a little bit of introspection when writing and ask himself if this is really the most optimal way to move the story forward or if this is unnecessary dramatic flair for the princesses to fall for the MC <<less

Premiss: Knight dies trying to protect the princess he serves and goes back in time to when he became her knight. Pretty chill premiss right? You expect that he now will actively try to help his princess or at least do something with the information he has from the future right? WRONG! Everything layed up in the first chapter is scraped and in return we get a horrible story and bad MC.

MC: Horrible. His personality does a nonsesical 180 degree turn when he goes back in time, he went from... more>> a knight willing to die for his princess to a guy that just wants to sleep in a sofa. That is to say that he is EXTREMELY passive, his character does practically nothing so the other characters in the story are instead used to make something happen so that he can come fix it and look good. He has no dreams or desires he just wants to sleep and thats it.

Story: Its based on making up different random scenarios or events so that the MC doesnt just laze around all day and something actually happens in the novel. Worlbuilding is basically none existent too.

Characters: ASSSSS. The personalities of all the characters is basically built on either liking or admiring the MC for the little things he does (when he gets drawn into different events by other characters, not because of something he did out of his own volition). There is no depth they are just puppets to coax the reader into thinking the MC is actually good. The novel gives the different princesses 3 of the most basic personalities ever and they arent even explored it simply says "one is arrogant AND childish! Interesting right, right? :) " So yeah dont expect anything.

Ttranslation: Rough at times.

Read something better instead that at least is going somewhere and is not just simply about "look at the MC I made hes cool right >:) " <<less

Pretty awful.

The premise is a very cliche regression harem thing, but that's par for the course.

The execution however is terrible. MC lacks depth, fights are uninteresting (with foregone conclusions) and the author just.. Kinda sucks

Case in point the third princess is a rip off from 101 arabian nights, and apparently according to the author she looks like a middle eastern dancer and whenever she is in the scene "its almost like middle eastern music played". All this is from the mc's pov who should have no way of knowing what... more>> the middle east is (no transmigration in this novel) and the author forgot this massive plot hole. And yeah it's a pretty sh*t stereotype too, and thats just one example of egregiously bad writing. <<less

Not enough chapters to decide whether it is overall good or bad. However, reading the first five chapters, I can easily conclude that this novel has potential. Just from the short 5 chapters I can tell that the characterization of MC, the three princesses, MC's friend and so on are done really well.

Such a thing is unusually rare in most webnovels you could find at this site, where the only personality of MC is to follow the story, or to get strong or to just cultivate or to just level... more>> up and so on, and the only personality of women around MC is just loving the MC and nothing else.

As I said, it is hard to decide whether this really is a good or bad novel from the few chapters released, but it has high potential. <<less

This is a man who wants a break. He has served his duty, even dying for that princess in a drawn out succession/ political war. He doesn't want power, he wants peace of mind. But that does not mean he is randomly uncaring to the plight of normal civilians. He is quite tired however, even tho he does excel at those tasks he doesn't want that stress or risk of being killed at any time. Thus he refuses to join any faction. While not foregoing his own training.

And thats about... more>> it for a quick summary. Cliche d setup? Yes, but this excels at the execution. Now let me tell you about the novel and writing itself.

Great character development, really good descriptions, intriguing drama and situations, fair bit of political maneuvering, an excellent romance and harem, an 8 out of 10. The MC *is* strong from the start, but this novel is about the drama and character development. All the 3 princesses have excellent characterization and distinct personalities. The reason I'm not going in-depth about the novel plot and nuances is because I actually want you to read this novel. If you like romance/ harem then you're probably really going to like this novel which refines the execution on those tropes quite well. <<less

Spoiler

MC accept the whole regression too easily and doesn't seem to mind much of her princess even though he seem to serve her in his past

[collapse]
.

The MC seems to have the protagonist Halo which attracts all the beauties and seems a bit dense fitting of a protagonist. But the story is progressing quite nicely.
Spoiler

1st princess is obsessed with his talent, 2nd princess seems to remember something from the past or is genuinely interest in MC and 3rd princess deemed him fun and interesting but as the plot goes the last route is predictable

As of so far it is my perfect story, MC who is competent, is laidback and wants an easy time getting caught up in girl related shenanigans. I would like him to be more romantic with the girls but you can't have a cake and eat it too.

I got hooked up because of the prologue. Not gonna lie, the prologue is beautiful, beautiful enough that it got me through all the available 53 chapters even though plot-wise it's nothing special. Come here if you want beautiful and heartwarming romance drama. Well, there are quite a bit of cliche involved, so some parts are good and others are just cringe.
