Have You Ever Met Such a Cold Author

Even though he lived in America, Tang Cu had been deemed the “godly author” since his debut 8 years ago on a famous Chinese online novel website. However, many people did not know he had a severe social anxiety disorder which caused him to be considered “cold.” After being invited to do an interview for the company’s 10 year anniversary celebration in China, he finally gathered his courage to meet with his #1 fan, Pian Yu.

Pian Yu had been following Tang Cu’s novels for his entire career and, after noticing the lack of romance in Tang Cu’s popular novels, they wrote fanfiction for his novels to include the ‘romance’ Tang Cu left out.

However, Pian Yu turned out to be a male college student named Lu LianGuang.

If you are thinking of reading this book, I have a few warnings for you:

  1. If you are the type of person who binges books and when they get hooked they cannot stand not having more chapters to read, put this on your "must read" or "to read" list and read it after it's mostly or all translated. Why? Because the book is too. Damn. Good. And the translation is also reallllllyyyy good (thank you translator!!!!) I wept when I saw that I reached the last translated chapter.
  2. I don't know about you, but if you are the type of person I described in #1, you probably also are the type of person who'll go mtl it if they're hooked (I know I am). But, this book is so beautiful, well written, and well translated that I am reluctant to mtl it as my brain tells me it'll harm the quality of the story. And yes. I tried to mtl it. I got through 2 chapters and gave up because I knew that if I mtled, the book would be spoiled for me and I wouldn't get the same level of enjoyment from reading as I would had I only read the translated version. It's one of those books where the good translation makes all the difference. It's one where you'll care about all the little details you normally wouldn't care about and it'll annoy you to no end that you don't have those little details when you mtl it.
  3. The ML has this internal discussion every once in a while saying he needs to hold back his 'beast'. If that doesn't sound like the sort of thing you'd enjoy then you may want to consider not reading (I would prefer if you read anyway if only for the amazing cute mc- his internal discussions are soooooo cuteeeee). Anyways, I feel like as their relationship develops, the 'beast' thingy will come up more often.
  4. If you cannot stand terrible families then you probably won't like this. Or if you're sensitive to death such as:
    Spoiler

The mc's little sister who had some disease that made her blind- there's a description of the MC watching his mother choke her and doesn't explicitly says the mother killed her, but it's implied super obviously.

    [collapse]
It kind of disturbed me a bit and I generally don't get disturbed by this kind of things. Also, in general he doesn't have much familial understanding. His brother is the closest to it, but doesn't completely understand the MC.
  5. The MC has trauma. READ THE TAGS. If you can't stand his behavior (preping for 3 hours for a convo, escaping from having to converse, etc. READ SOMETHING ELSE. I WON'T ALLOW YOU TO BE MEAN TO MY BABY- HE HAS SEVERE SOCIAL ANXIETY, IT IS IN THE DESCRIPTION. HE ACTS LIKE SOMEONE WITH SOCIAL ANXIETY, BIG SURPRISE.
  6. They fall in love (not too sure if the MC realized it's romantic yet but idk) nearly immediately. Neither has had a relationship before this (I'm sure about the ML, not confirmed for MC, but I'm 99% sure he hasn't. If you don't like that sort of thing oh well- the MC is adorable enough to make up for it in my opinion.
Overall the story is fluff, fluff, fluff, fluff, and fluff with trauma, terrible families, and horrible childhood on the side. It is a beautiful story which is translated amazingly (in my opinion). The MC is adorable enough that I have claimed him as my child (you can't have him I said it first). For reference, I only have 8-ish book children, and I've read at the minimum 1, 000 books (that I've enjoyed enough to remember). I sincerely want the MC to be happy. Also, thank you so much translator, keep it up!!! I love your translations and adore the book, thank you so so so much for starting to translate it because I would have never found this gem otherwise. Also, I have to say thanku for having a nice, easy to navigate site. It looks very good!! My only sorrow is that there is no commenting function so I can't express to you my immense thanks for translating this book so well, give encouragement, you know? Translating is really hard and probably super boring and as you're able to translate it, you could have simply enjoyed the book in it's original language. There's no obligation to translate so I want to thank you so much for your efforts in translating. I hope I speak for everyone who's reading/read this book when saying thank you and you're amazing!

(I may update this when more chapters come out and when I've gotten further in the story, I hope this was helpful for people who're considering reading! Sorry if it's not written too well, this is like the 5th review I've written and honestly the longest one I've written so far)

Just wanted to say that I love the plot so far and already find them adorable!

Also, one of the best translater site experiences I've ever had. It's simple and nice, overall easy to navigate. Aesthetic wise, it's just so nice (though I'm on mobile, but I feel that's a good indicater of a good site if it's nice on mobile). Just wanted to say thank you for translating, bamboochuyi! Your hard work gives me absolute joy, and I hope you have fun translating your first novel!

characters:

mc: tang cu

ml: lu lianguang

summary: ... more>>
Spoiler

MC is a socially recluse but very successful webnovel author. He goes back home to 'send his dying mother off', but also got to meet his number one fan. He thought this fan was a girl, but turns out its a dude. They hit it off right away despite mc's anxiety. Thankfully ML has high eq and takes the lead in their relationship. MC warms up to him and eventually they get together. MC learns that ML is not only a fanfiction writer but also an established author on the same webnovel platform as his. Said platform tried to screw them both over for money, and in the end, they leave to establish a joint studio.

[collapse]

thoughts:

a very no brain dog blood novel, a bit shallow. Its fairly short so maybe thats why some things werent fleshed out well.

it has some cute parts tho, cp dynamic is respectful and as pure as vanilla. Tang cu has anxiety up the wazoo but he learns to overcome this. Hes very protective of his work and the people he cares abt (ie sister), and I do appreciate how hes got a bottom line and wont let anyone cross it despite his self esteem issues.

not much to say about lu lianguang, he was a typical perfect love interest, very caring very considerate never stepping out of line kinda character.

but I wasnt a fan of how the author wrote the villains in the story. The mother was flat out terrible. No redeeming qualities whatsoever. Everything she did was just excessively evil for no reason other than to make readers hate her. Got on my nerves a lot so I ended up skipping a bunch of her parts. Anyways, she died, good riddance.

the webnovel platform being asses and the plagarism issues was also kinda meh. Methinks its a decent depiction of irl webnovel platforms (cough jj cough) but I dont think the author made good use of the 60 chapters to make it an engaging source of conflict. The main characters were too rich and powerful, everything got settled with a bit of money and connections. No highs or lows, no climax or any sense of satisfaction when everything was resolved.

(also the author has a bad habit of overexplaining things that werent relevant to the story and ngl its a snoozefest lol) <<less

Legitimately don't ignore the reviews that say you will regret starting it before it's completely translated. It makes you want to binge purely because it's somehow short, edible, yet impactfully written with real feeling characters.

Pro for the positive siblings and female characters in bl novels that aren't automatically evil. It's funny how so many bl novels villainize almost all of the females. Idk if that's realistic to the gay guy experience but sometimes it feels like it's a bit much but then maybe it's bc I don't know. Regardless besides... more>> the mom and company, wholesomeness abound everywhere. It is good fluff. <<less

My only regret is not listening to the warning for Binge readers stated by the sister upstairs.

It such a good story that I regret not waiting for it to be complete and now im left hanging like a salted fish.

Thank you translator for translating!!!! If I didn't know it I might have thought this book was originally English!

The story is very good, I highly recommend reading it. Heavy topics are addressed, but the story is also very sweet.

Everglyn's warnings cover pretty much anything to look out for in the story, so I won't restate them.

The heavy topics that are addressed are handled well, at least as far as I read. There are also content warnings for the chapters where those topics are raised, which I found helpful. It's really nice to read a translated novel that hasn't used the r-word when addressing mental health and illness.... more>> I'm not sure how much of the credit goes to the original author and how much to the translator, but it is definitely appreciated. <<less

One of the most beautiful, wholesome relationships ever, oh my sweet lord I'm in love. Our MC is soooo freaking precious, and our ML is such a dear too. I'm dying, it's actually so lovable, I swear on my book loving soul, our MC deserves soooo much, and I'm glad our ML can help him get through his trauma, albeit one step at a time.

200% reccomend, definitely check it out!

Amazing — one of the best internet novels I've read in the past few years (alongside Cai Cai). Deals with mental health issues, love, and letting go. The romance between the leads is so sweet. The synopsis definitely doesn't do the novel justice.

It was a nice light read. The antagonists were pretty flat, and main characters were (as expected) extremely rich and very good-looking. Though I found the MC very interesting at first, his development kind of plateaued by midway. But I liked his dynamic with the ML, so that was nice. On the other hand, the ML's potential got lost in the progress. He was at first described to have a very flawed, selfish, and arrogant personality, which could've really added his dimension to the story. But I guess falling in... more>> love just turned him to a cookie-cutter perfect boyfriend.

I actually quite liked background storyline of a big online novel platform exploiting its authors. Just wish there were less info-dumps that made my eyes want to skim it. It was quite ironic though, that one of the main subplots was a plagiarism issue, but the novel that the MC wrote in this story was a direct rip off Laputa: Castle in the Sky lmao.

In terms of writing, sometimes the scenes would suddenly shift to another day or character's perspective and threw me off a bit. <<less

This is such a novel !!!!

It's a story of a rare couple who are almost 90% compatible with each other's expectations and taste, how they are willing to let go of things for the person they loved and how they compromised little things to fit each other and how they molded themselves so that they could fit completely together well.

Good storyline and the main CP is just too cute. The side CP story is in extras I think but it was not translated so I didn't read.

This is so... more>> good read. <<less

This novel is a true gem. The more I read the more my heart aches for the MC. Despite everything that happened to him he is still strong enough to hold on. This is too admirable from my perspective. Thanks to the author and translator for bringing us this novel.

PS: The translator has translated up to chap 38 but the NovelUpdates page only shows up to chap 32, I wonder why. I hope someone can fix this.

I appreciate how this story focused on the after effects of and healing after a traumatic event, rather than dredging through that level of dark drama through the whole story. Often a ‘cute cold’ character type give whiplash when switching between the two states. A short sweet read.

I expected some dog blood drama and was a little worried especially with those tags but fret not, it's a sweet, mostly smooth going story. Their relationship and support was the best and communication was good. No annoying misunderstanding or unnecessary drama. I'm glad MC somewhat got the closure he needed and it's just fluff for him.

The author names got confusing so I may come back and read the translation because the translator does a good job with all the names (thank you!) and the important... more>> side characters don't play too big roles (I like ML's room mate though) but I don't expect much from them in such a short story.

Spoiler

No offense but when I first started reading this novel I thought Tang Cu would be the gong in this couple pairing. But then as the plot continues I realise that it made more sense for the ML to be the one who takes the lead. Hehe

But nonetheless our Tang Cu is so cute I wanna give him a hug and hide him away from all the negativity in his world.

Overall the plot and story is very beautiful and touching. I finished this novel within a day because it was just that good 🤭 <<less

To all fellow readers:

This is my 2nd time reviewing so please kindly overlook any mistakes or errors on my part. I am here to tell you only 3 things they are

Firstly :

Before actually reading the book having visited comments section my inner thoughts are:

'" WHY THE HELL ARE ALL READERS CONVERTED TO MOTHER ZONE AND SPREADING SO MUCH SWEETNESS " hence I got hooked up and then I ended up with :

" I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY BAOBEI TANG CU. HE IS A CUTIEPIE. AHH I WISH HE IS REAL SOO MUCH".i became a fan of this novel. Both ML and MC are cute and gentle no heavy and angsty parts. Such a heart-warming and light read novel.

I Highly recommend you to read this.

Secondly:

Thanks for translators hard work.I hope you update extras too. I am waiting to read our side cp cute fluff dynamics and our MC and ML happy life together some more.

I Highly recommend you to read this.

Thirdly:

why did it end so fastly author sama great job you filled my heart with warmth of story. THANK YOU AUTHOR GOD.

I Highly recommend you to read this.

I actually love this story so much!

The story is sweet but painful- The MC has trauma and it's sad to find out what he's been through and exactly why he has issues.

But I loved the MC the most- he is shy, kind, but unfortunately doubts himself a lot, you can't help but feel sorry for him, but I'm happy he is able to come out of his shell and be himself around Ml. As a person with social anxiety, I especially related to him in the way he can't interact... more>> with people properly, which made me like the story even more and I feel as though the mental health aspect was quite well written. He's so pitiful but he's so loveable! The emotions I went through while reading- I went from happiness, to sadness back to happiness, then to genuine anger towards the Mc's family, being able to treat such a lovely person with such animosity is so baffling and infuriating!

I also love the ML in how accepting and loving he is towards Mc! Although he loves MC, he knows boundaries and that there is a line- he makes sure he doesn't cross this line to make sure MC isn't uncomfortable in any way. ML loves MC and assures MC of his worth and how much he loves him which is so ❤️!!!! So good!!! The main pairing is so sweet and moving!

This one is a definite recommend and I plan on finishing the rest! <<less

It was wholesome and fluffy read.

Spoiler

The MC had really tragic and miserable experince. Like it was so much to that extent that it particularly stood out in the entire novel, as rest all characters around him in the novel had led decent and happy lives, and hadn't suffered or struggled not even 20 percent of what MC had gone through.

So the fact that how people around him felt distressed or sympathised with him and his narration and emotions erupting due to his past was quickly wrapped up in couple of chapters, made it seem a bit shallow? Like MC cried out and ML consoled and confessed him and he became happy and it was basically over?

And then MC gradually tried to interact with people and socialize. I guess it's understandable as it's fluff but I felt either more space should have been given to mc's past or his suffering shouldn't have been this much tragic.

[collapse]

Spoiler
    • ML is ideal charismatic character and actually had a vivid vibrant personality that suited his age. Like generally MLs are cold aloof with similar persona.
    • Like how he was picky with food,
and how he was more aggressive and picky in personal life than the polite and gentlemanly facade he appeared with in front of strangers.
    • How he seemed to look up to MC as he discovered MC was wayyy more knowledgeable than him in the same field.
    • And how adorable and realistic it seemed as he always procrastinated updating novels lol and was left dumbfounded as how MC was all regular.
[collapse]

And the very most satisfying and attractive part of the novel?

Spoiler

The room mate or friend of ML was actually a friend of him, not a henchman or clingy bootlicker or buddy less subordinate more kind of person.

In almost all novels, without exception the the so called close friends of ML are more like his sidekicks and strangely cling to him despite having such cold and aloof persona talking in monosyllables and always shooing away (as he finds them annoying) them after ordering asking him favor or help.

The world is populated by some truly terrible individuals, and the institutions of law are unequal to the task of their rehabilitation. This is why I only want to read soft fluffy stories of good children who love each other and will do all the right things, but which neither turn away from ugly realities nor justify them with jingoistic platitudes. This novel understands what it means to pay for one's own happy ending. Those who feel that the happy ending is unrealistic are perfectly justified, because not everyone is... more>> a genius savant writer who can earn great wealth and power through their work in an emerging industry, but the story also just happens to focus on the late movement towards victory rather than the decades of abuse and grinding. The people who did not achieve such a happy ending are also represented in the book, compromising principles for paychecks and drunkenly apologising at other people's weddings. There's even another one who grows up witnessing the abuses from a young age and does only a little -- enough to help, enough to salve his conscience, but never anything that could compromise his own interests. This story was never about the Everyman, and that's okay; it is enough that they are represented as NPCs, in all their dignity and shabbiness. After all, the world is so full of them already.

As for the villains being flat due to being so irredeemable -- well, if only I didn't see the same character profiles reflected in the people of my own community, I would have agreed. Some people just live like malevolent spirits even before they're dead. In contrast, MC and ML are almost too good to be true, being kind and considerate and eager to do their best by others, but that's precisely what you read for in a fluff genre. As far as I'm concerned, it's a feature, not a bug. Five stars. <<less

It was quite a short read and enjoyed reading it. Sometimes tho the scenes and dialogues changed randomly which was a bit jarring. I love the concept of healing. MC is making progress even in the ending chapters which I like. People can't suddenly get better because of love and it's well represented here. It's not easy to love or be loved by someone who is struggling with traumatic past experiences. ML does good job at this. He's caring but never forcing himself on MC. I really wish both of... more>> them a good health and happiness. <<less
