Because of you, I became a better me.

The first time Sheng Renxing met Xing Ye, the other had dragged him into a skirmish.

That fight had been exhilarating.

The second time they met, Xing Ye had just finished a round in the ring. He had stood in the centre, entire body covered in wounds, his downcast gaze bypassing everyone else to land on Sheng Renxing.

Sheng Renxing had taken him home.

The third time, Sheng Renxing had arrived at his new school with a head full of red hair. He was met with the sight of Xing Ye in the classroom, all properly-decked out in his school uniform.

Their grades: Sheng Renxing scored 148 points while Xing Ye scored 18 points.

Later:

Blood continued to drip down Xing Ye’s brow ridge. He pressed Sheng Renxing against the door with one hand, his teeth sunk into the boxing glove of his other hand. There was a vicious light in his eyes— “Stay out of my business. Keep your sympathy. The people here aren’t your friends—they’re all madmen or human scum.”

Sheng Renxing: “…Can the human scum in front of me let go?”

He was the weeds set ablaze amidst the night sky. Even after exhausting everything he had, all that could be seen by passing strangers were flashes of embers and ashes.

But one day, a phoenix descended from the skies and made the weeds his home.

It really has a Saye vibe so far. Both MC and ML are very interesting and have strong personalities. I absolutely love these kind of stories but sadly the translator had to stop... I hope it gets picked up one day...

Edit: it did get picked up, the translator is great and the story got even better! Both main characters are well written. Recommend, recommend, recommend! (Important things should be said three times.)

Just picked up this novel! I'm not a big fan of MTL so I'm just waiting for the translated chapters to release (the translator's doing an excellent job btw!). So far (c6) the MC and ML have only met twice. I see a lot of potential in this story, and I'm pretty confident it'll live up to my expectations. For now, I'll rate it 5/5.

Seriously such a hidden gem of a novel! The setting is in a high school with the most lackadaisical approach to learning I've ever seen, with a cast of boys that run around wreaking havoc and playing games and are pretty much never studying. It's a coming of age novel, with lots of raging hormones, friendship, and first love. Delinquent x good student is a trope that's played out a lot, but this novel has a very fresh take on the concept!

The main characters are refreshingly three dimensional and avoid... more>> falling into any cliche character designs- there's no perfect ML, no OP MC, and no tsundere delinquent or kuudere study god or any other -dere types. Characters actually communicate well and support each other, and there's no major misunderstandings or crazy jealousy. There's still drama and fighting, and the romance is a nice semi-slow burn with plenty of tension and will they-won't they energy, but the underlying atmosphere of this novel is quite warm.

MC is one of my favorites for a novel with this setting, as he knows what he wants and pursues his passions with all his heart. He has a high EQ, especially for a high schooler, and his straightforward personality was just too likable. He's quite impulsive and wild, quick to jump into a physical fight, but also pretty quick to regulate his emotions and move on. Case in point: getting into a fight on his first day of school with ML's friends before proceeding to become besties with all of them basically the next day.

ML is a seemingly cold and silent delinquent on the outside but he pretty quickly opens up to reveal a quite humorous and teasing side. He clearly has a lot of walls up to protect himself, but I liked that he actually had a personality behind those walls unlike some other cold MLs out there. He smiles, he laughs, he gets jealous and upset- he's really just a normal teenager like the rest of them, rather than some male god who smiles once in a blue moon and hides all his emotions.

The two of them had great chemistry with each other both as friends and as lovers, and their relationship development is steady and very natural. I especially loved the coincidental way they first met and immediately connected with each other- they really read like soulmates with how their personalities complement each other so well. Despite ML being the seemingly wild child with his street fighting and underground boxing matches, the seemingly studious MC is the actual wild one, wanting to jump into fights as soon as he feels a hint of anger.

The plot slowed down a lot in the last 20 chapters or so, and it was a bit difficult for me to finish just because the novel didn't seem to be going anywhere at that point. I'm not great with slice of life if there's not enough comedy or background drama to keep me invested. It could also be the MTL making it harder for me to read... this is really such a beautiful novel, I almost couldn't bear to MTL. If the translation does complete, I will definitely return and re-read. <<less

This is a good, well rounded book worth your time. Good characters, great romance, decent slice of life plot with good writing. The rating should be higher in my opinion bc a 4.3 for this when there are worse with 4.5 is weird to me. There are some minor problems but I still rated it 5 just to boost the ratings a little cause it deserves better. Hope the rating gets better as it gets more popular. As some have already stated this book is written reminiscent of books like... more>> Saye and Fake Slackers with that youthful, raw feeling to it. Like a bunch of teenagers doing teenage things with a teenage mindset. Very nostalgic.

The book is abt our MC, SR, who for once actually identifies as gay before the series starts (he was even partially out). He comes from a wealthy family, and at the very start he seemingly runs away from home and transfers schools to a small, lawless area. Our MC is bold, arrogant, and quite true to himself, with the awkwardness and recklessness, yet at the same time honesty of a teenage boy. I really liked his character and I think most people will as well. His emotional ups and downs are very relatable for his age. Hes kinda OP bc hes a scholar, can play the piano, rich, handsome, can play cards, racing etc. But all this is explained by his control freak perfectionist dad who thinks if you're not first place then you're tr*sh so MC basically had perfection beat and insulted into him sadly. This adds dimension and background to his character. What I liked most abt him tho is that he surprisingly

Falls in love first and is also the pursuer (not common for MCs). Like once he falls in love he totally goes after his man. A confident gay. I love him for that.

On the other hand is our ML who is at first written like the usual stoic ML but instantly you see that theres more than meets the eye. I feel like a lot of writers try to write the "cold but hiding alot underneath" character but dont offer enough depth for it to work (I guess partially bc these characters also have the caricature of being rich, handsome, and super smart so it seems basic). For this ML he is indeed handome but hes dirt poor and his grades are tr*sh. And when I mean poor I really mean it hes in debt, lives in the slums, and has to do underground boxing to make a living. He doesnt suddenly turn his grades around and turn out to be a genius either, his grades remain tr*sh from begining to end. However he does have things hes good at like boxing and later

which I like how he took an unconventional career path and didnt just cram last minute and get into a prestigious college. Hes untalkative and seems disinterested at first but in reality he just has his priorities very straight and is unconcerned about anything else. He really just wants to live his life in peace but trouble seems to find him. Hes a good boy dealt a bad lot in life. And after he meets MC we see him soften up and just in general turn out to be this gentle and decent person. Even when hes not sure of his feeling for MC and even when theyre just friends you can see hes a decent person. MC was like the light that gave him hope and pulled him of metaphorically drowning in the depressive atmosphere of the slums.

That being said the romance between these two is very steamy and is what sold me on this book! There are no descriptive scenes but you know exactly what they're doing and even before they get together the tension is super thick you can cut it with a knife. They have chemistry for days! The back and forth banter, smiling, flirting (even if unintentional), and just over all making each other laugh and smile will make you squeal. Every moment with these two will either make your heart race or make you hold you're breath the chemistry and tension is so strong. It's been a minute since I read such good chemistry this author did a great job of making you feel their compatibility strongly. They were great friends before they were lovers and then when they become lovers they supported each other and stuck by each other. The dynamic is

Very flirty MC who can dish out but cant take it when ML flirts back and an unintentionally flirty ML who is appears unaffected but is obv feeling all kinds of things.

Its kind of a slow burn but it doesn't feel like it to me bc it's like you know that I know that he knows we like each other we just need a suitable time to actually get together. They get together abt halfway through. They're a really hot couple tbh.

Now onto the plot. The plot basically resolves the characters it is slice of life school life so lower your expectations right off the bat. It's all about them going to school, getting into fights, hanging out friends, dealing with their family members, dealing with problems that crop up. Issues include

MC scum dad, ML shrew mom, ML loan sharks, ML boxing matches, ML and MC fights with other people, MC schooling (MC is a scholar)

On that note I do feel like we needed more extras like everything was indeed wrapped up decently but like I needed more yknow? Maybe a years into the future extra. It lost momentum at the end but it wasnt a terrible ending just could have better buildup and explained more. Still feel like it was a good book though and that's why it's a 5.

I recommend this book to those who like slice of life school life style books with a character focus and great romance. It's perfect to pass the time. I'm going to look out for more from this author because their writing style is my taste. <<less
