Lin Wuyu is the academic god of his high school: calm, confident, and forever effortlessly able to get first place. Ding Ji flaunts his excellent memory and specializes in the art of hoodwinking others through fortune telling.

These two people who initially don’t have anything in common meet due to the spinning gears of fate.

Lin Wuyu discovers that the seemingly sloppy, careless Ding Ji is in fact outstandingly smart. After a series of hilarious misunderstandings, the reason why Ding Ji is unwilling to be called a prodigy gradually reveals itself. Two equally clever and exceptional teens, with similar yet not completely identical family troubles, slowly grow closer as they deepen their understanding of each other, little by little.

The author’s writing is humorous, with a natural, flowing style. The personalities of these two sharply contrasting teens appear vividly and realistically on paper. Lin Wuyu’s occasional childishness under his cool-headed academic god appearance and Ding Ji’s kindheartedness and liveliness that can’t be concealed by his street king energy are revealed by the author’s various and amusing plots.

Rated 4.0? Seriously? I don't understand how some tr*sh novels get a rating above 4.3+ and a novel like this is rated 4 stars, it's very underrated. After reading the released chapters, I went on to continue reading it through MTL because I have too much time on my hands.

In the first seven chapters, both the leads had a chance encounter and we get to know their backgrounds, relationships, and personalities as they get to know each other. The pace is slow (as everything is explored nicely) and the writing... more>> is very detailed - their smallest interactions, normal conversations, feelings, all of them are written in there. We're literally following their journey as they meet, form a friendship, and more. At first, when I was reading the first seven released chapters, I found it a bit boring (?), not that the writing was bad. But I'm glad I persisted because now, I'm in love with the leads. I feel like I know them personally, I care so much about them. All of the characters are three dimensional, have goals, purposes, and thoughts; it's such a realistic read. The translator did an excellent job, thanks for your hard work. Read this, there won't be any regrets! I recommend this! <<less

Hi! I'm the new translator so I thought I'd leave a review. Wu Zhe is the author (I used to translate another one of their works) and I feel like that says enough about the quality of the works, and especially the banter and dialogue (which is the toughest to translate and even tougher to understand through MTL which is why I want to translate it) since there are a fair share of references.

As I'm reading while I translate, I can't say much about the plot but so far it's... more>> been a pleasure!! Really intriguing novel and incredible writing by Wu Zhe as always.

Hope everyone enjoys! <<less

I'M BEGGING THE TRANSLATORS TO PICK THIS UP AGAIN. I love love love Wu Zhe and, despite being broke, would buy an official English translation if it was on the market. It's a pity more of their work isn't translated, and so many that started are left off.

I can't MTL their writing, because it's a disservice to their skill and storytelling. If I could learn Mandarin just for to be able to read this novel, I would. Just 20 chapters has my heart cinched to these characters. PLEASE, help a... more>> girl out and let me know whether I can hope for a future update <3 <<less

It's simple, I see that the author is Wu Zhe and I click and read.

Im not really good when it comes to writing a review but, all I can say is that the story is good and the pace is slow and the first few chapters is somewhat boring but hold on till the end because its actually good. ❤

5 stars

At first I thought the start was slow then somewhere in the first 15 chapters I thought it was too fast, like the amount of things that happened could have been a 50 chapter novel by itself.
Spoiler

Well, the start was dramatic enough with one MC coming out to his entire school, hinting at very troubled home life (I HATE HIS PARENTS FYI), other MC having equally interesting home life and able to do fortune telling to a certain extent and somehow meeting.

[collapse]
Then I stopped. But now that I came back and pushed through a bit more, the story really developed and I got so engrossed I finished the book.

At first I admit I thought it was a meet cute with typical romance but it's not. Their friendship is the base of the story and the banter is just 5 stars by itself. There is no

love at first sight. It starts out purely with friendship and I liked how natural the flow of the story is. The climax of it did get quite dramatic and their relationship was not firm after that but they gradually move closer after that. Ding Ji is a very refreshing character as someone new to romance/relationship in general. I won't even say who is ML because they are both MC.

[collapse]

It's a very sweet story though of course there is drama towards the back of the book.
Spoiler

Ya I hate both their parents but esp Wu Yu's parents. Glad he broke it off cleanly.

[collapse]

Side characters are great too, from their dorm mates to Ding Ji's childhood friend. Ding Ji's granny gets a gold star too.
Spoiler

Wu Yu's brother was interesting as well.

[collapse]

Overall, the start is a bit of an overload yet slow (very contradicting) but once you get into the story, it's so very good. A very good coming of age story.

Special mention of
Spoiler

how romantic Wu Yu's gift is? That "raising chicken book" >///<

So I did it, I couldn't wait anymore and I read the rest of the novel thru MTL and it went better than I expected lol anyway I LOVED THIS NOVEL, it has everything I need from a BL.

The title fits the characters so damn well and I love the fact that like SAYE this book has two MC and not the classic MCML dynamic. Their friendship is the best part of the novel and I actually found myself missing their 'old' friendship dynamic once ... more>>
Spoiler

they got together and thei relationship progressed to couple

(it was still amazing tho).

I really hope the translator decides to continue this novel 🥺 I noticed almost all Wuzhe's works are currently dropped right now and idk why, they're some of the best modern BL <<less

THIS WAS SOOOO GOOD, 2nd fav Wu Zhe so far!! I really really really love and feel for both Lin Wuyu and Ding Ji. Especially Lin Wuyu, he downplays his family situation a lot and I get it's only because he's grown used to it but it just really f*cking sucks. I'm so happy 🐟🐥 were able to find each other and become an anchor for each other, they fit so well together, are so sweet and teasing with each other, and you can just really tell they... more>> care for the other soso much. Some wise words: "Everyone has attachments, and with attachments come things you can't avoid, " Xu Tianbo said, "But if you really had no attachments, life would be too lonely. So, it's difficult only because you're a person with flesh, blood, and feelings. Just don't be too hard on yourself."

Also these quotes from Ding Ji's grandma really got to me : ((

"Don't say sorry for no reason, ' Grandma patted his hand. "There's no need for so many sorrys in this world-this sorry, that sorry. You just want to live your own life. What's there to be sorry about? No one has the right to demand an apology from you.", "We didn't raise you with any specific expectations of what kind of person you should become. No matter what kind of person you are, you're still my grandson." <<less

I enjoyed reading. I enjoy the last 40 chapters more just cause I like them being in a relationship honestly. I have no problem with the story besides their parents (both sets are tr*sh)

First let us talk positive.

I adore Ding Ji personality, I thrive to be like him one of these days, he's in touch with his emotions, know who he is and what he wants, carefree, childish and can be serious when needed. I Purely adore him and his Grandparents, especially his grandma she is an empress of... more>> her own and I love the fact she stands by her grandson and only wish for his happiness no matter what. What a gem of a human she is. I love her

Lin Wuyu, I also love him. He knows what he wants and nothing will stand in his way, the story literally started out with him outting himself to his whole school. As much as he is your typical top student, he defines that stereotypes at times. I love the fact he didn't let his parents get in his way of his dream or life even if it meant cutting ties with them.

Liu Jinpeng Ding Ji's best friend, I hope a friend like him finds me in this vast world, his loyalty knows no bound, he's hilarious, open minded, sticks by his friend and a great person (he shows you that you don't need to be book smart to be a decent human being)

Lin Zhan, Lin Wuyu's brother that dissappear for like 10 years, I get why he escaped (once again terrible parents), he was suffering to the point he became paranoid and can barely trust people and likes to self isolate

The relationship between Ding Ji and Lin Wuyu is so freaking cute, they understand each other really well. We could tell since they started to hang out with each other, but that understanding grew beautifully. The way they handled being found out and the way thy navigate their relationship in a healthy way is just wow. I love

Now what I don't like

Spoiler

First let's starts of with the lesser of evil Ding Ji's parent, they left their six year old child with his grandparents to be in the other side if the world and then return 10 years later (remember they didn't raise him) just to dictate how he should live his life, how he's not meeting their expectations, how he should be better. His best were never enough for them. What differs them from Lin Wuyu's parents is that they tried to communicate with Ding Ji although it was always in their term and whenever Ding Ji pushes back on them (they have no right to shape the dough that they didn't put any works into) they say he's disobedient. Literally could not stand them honestly

Now the evils Lin Wuyu and Lin Zhan's parents. They are the worst, they are proof of that some people shouldn't have children, you don't have to physically ab*se them for it to be ab*se. They kept on down grading Wuyu's accomplishment and hardwood by saying that he could never amount to his brother (according to him he was a spare part made for him brother, if something were to happen to him b4 he ran away from home). Everything he did was devised by them saying his brother this his brother that. Lin Wuyu has been self efficient since middle school, when his brother was home he was basically air but the moment he disappeared he became their verbal punching bag. Ugh they gave me a headache. What took the cake was when they found out about his sexuality l, not only did they call him a disgusting pe*vert, they started to berate him (especially his mother) to the point he had to move out and fully moved into his dorm. (The fact Wuyu was worrying if he didn't get his stuff that they would burn them out of spite is saying all you need to know). And also f*ck them for outing Ding Ji to his parents out of spite for Wuyu standing up to them and calling their bs way of parenting.

The thing I hate the most is outing someone out, that is my number pet peeve and issue with novels and IRL. One should not be outted unless they CHOSE to do it themselves, not force but CHOSE.

[collapse]

Honestly the parents are why I personally wouldn't reread from beginning to end. Can't stand them. But other than that great story <<less

Unbridled is my second novel by wu zhe after saye and I can confidently say that their writing is a work of art. Even though I might have missed some things since I used mtl but it was still a phenomenal ride that kept me up all day and night. Looking forward to rereading this after it is fully translated.

My main feeling after finishing this story is... tired. This was a tiring story to read. If you're looking for fluff and wholesomeness, I would look away. For 90% of the story, I was stressed and anxious, and only near the end when everything was over did I get a chance to indulge in a bit of dog food.

There is too much going on in this story. Our MC and ML are two kids with extremely talented minds but extremely difficult psychological conditions. The author addresses the consequences of several... more>> different extremes of parental ab*se, from extreme obsession to extreme neglect to excessive pressure. The parents are by far the biggest villains here, with the ML's being especially terrible. There are so many different random plot points interwoven into a few main plot points that it's crazy. Add that to the major romance arc where our MC was "straight" but had never fallen in love before or even shown any interest in anyone and then had to go through a whole realization of his feelings.

Very stressful. I felt tense throughout the story, with too many conflicts and potential conflicts and tragic pasts and psychologically unwell parents or peers or family members. The rest of our MC's family is truly a breath of fresh air though, and without them or the childhood friend I really don't know how things would have turned out. Recommended to read if you're in the mood for some serious drama. <<less

I love this novel so much! The previous translation seemed to stop at Chpater 32 so I am stuck, I tried MTL but it doesn't make much sense. Every day I am waiting for an update 😭😭😭. I am reading other Wu Zhe novel meanwhile but its not decreasing my longing. I wish I magically had the whole translated novel in my hand. I love both Lin Wuyu and Ding ji so much!

This novel has everything that tick my boxes, well written intriguing main characters, interesting plot that doesn't solely... more>> rely on the romance, realistic family drama, the right amount of angst, wholesome fluff, strong and righteous MCs. The plot is just Chefs kiss so far! I can't wait to know what's the deal with Lin Wuyu's brother. I love sibling bonding, so I hope it has a happy ending for Lin Wuyu. Or at least a not too devastating ending. I am looking forward to theMCs friends to lover transformation as well. I hope Ding Ji falls and confesses first and later Lin Wuyu falls harder. Gosh! I hope someone picks this novel up soon, I am dying over here! <<less

A delightful, heartwarming, mostly feel good and slice-of-life novel with a light dose of angst (much less than Saye). It's a friends-to-lovers romance with a natural build-up and transition (with some understandable gay panic, in relation to coming-out etc.) halfway through the story where the friendship part doesn't feel subpar to them being a couple - it's a wonderful friendship and they're also a great couple.

Like in her other novels, Wu Zhe illuminates some parent-child issues in contemporary China - in this case, extreme favouritism and control urges, children being... more>> raised by the grandparents suddenly being subject to extremely strict and authoritarian parenting to "make up for" years of laxness, and the woes of being a child genius. But Lin Wuyu and Ding Ji aren't archetypes/stereotypes, victims of their circumstances but instead captivating, intriguing characters who've risen above and made the most of what they've been handed. It's great to get to know them and see more and more shades of their personalities appear XD

The MissEvan/猫耳FM audio drama is wonderful and highly recommendable! The BGM is exquisite and the voice actors really make the great banter and also scenes of intimacy come alive. <<less

Super interesting school life romance novel. Have a love hate relationship with the plot cause as much as I love the angsty part with both their parents, I also hate their parents alot.

This novel is angsty! There are some fluffy and wholesome moments but afterall you cant ditch and ignore their parents. They are always there so there are plenty of angsty and stressful plots in the novel. But still highly recommended because their relationship is super cute. Also.. I didnt read the tags properly but I totally thought Lin... more>> Wuyu was the shou hahahahhahaha. Well blame me for being blind. But its still cute so no harm 🤭 <<less

Another well written novel from this author. The details on this slice of life novel is very believable and the struggles they face. LW's parents are just detestable, I'm glad he met DJ where he's able to experience a life full of joy and love. I'm glad he met his brother so he wasn't all alone. Well written like the author's other novels.

This novel is such a vibe which is indescribable. I've waited till this one was completely translated so I can fully immerse myself in this. Loner Study god Fish-ge and little immortal prodigy rooster are such cute characters which leaves me nothing to hate them. Every character, grandma, grandpa, pengpeng, aunt, little cousin, fish-ge's secret crush, all are such a nice character sometimes I wish they were real. Not to mention our study God and half immortal, they're such a flirt, you'll ask yourself why you're still single, you wanna... more>> have what they have. Def recommend it to everyone who likes fluff.

My fav chap was when little rooster realized he likes fish-ge and he had a breakdown. I really wanted to hug him but fish-ge didn't give me the chance cuz yk hahahaha

And chap 88, I was laughing and crying at the same time lol. That felt so dramatic yet so real. Grandma, you're the MVP of this chap.

I like how the two MCs handles their problems, I mean they solved it together.

I really liked the handmade gifts they gave each other in each other's birthday. I so much hated my single life.

There's so much to say but one thing is clear

[Study god's parents are tr*shier than little prodigy's parents.] <<less

I really wanted to like this but unfortunately I just didn't find myself caring about the characters that much. I could definitely feel the love between them and I like their relationship but them individually... idk I just wasn't very intrigued. And there wasn't really much going on IMO like not much drama and it was pretty slow. I also found the TL to be just OK.
