In the summer of 1992, Shan Ming was injured during a mission and got separated from his teammates. He was lost in the vast and horrifying primitive forest on the China-Myanmar border.

Relying on his rich experience in wildlife survival, he still holds absolute confidence in his ability to escape from difficulties.

However, it took him double the time expected to escape from this devil’s land.

The reason was that he accidentally picked up a creature that should’ve never appeared in this place – a child – a little Chinese boy.

On a whim, Shan Ming picked up the child from the gates of death. As a result, he changed the fate of two people, or perhaps even more.

The untraceable plane crash, the numerous crises faced by the mercenary group, the suspicions and sacrifices among the members of the group, and the ice-thin relationship with the government organization.

The fear-stricken “National Weapon” project, the legendary and tragic fate of the “Dragon Blood Kins”.

Huge conspiracies were hidden behind the seemingly ordinary missions and everything seemed to be connected with the child’s mysterious identity.

His appearance dragged Shan Ming and his mercenary group step by step into irreparable doom…

Ahem, the text above is sort of tricky. Let’s try a more relaxed version:

Due to a plane crash, a five-year-old (human?) shota got lost in the primitive forest on the China-Myanmar border. He was forcibly raised by a Chinese member of an international mercenary group.

Since falling into the hands of this inhuman mercenary, the shota has completely bid farewell to his delicate childhood and begun his painful ripening.

When other five-year-old shotas were acting mushy gushy in their mothers’ arms, he had been forced to learn how to shoot a headshot.

When other seven-year-olds were held in the palm of their parents’ hands, he had to solo the pe*verted killer who lusted after him.

When other ten-year-olds were still innocently crushing on their female deskmate, he had already followed his foster father, who had no lower limit to his morality, into and out of the colorful brothels in Las Vegas.

After being under the influence of his foster father for a long time, the naive little shota finally became abnormal…

So this is the story of a delicate young master who has been bullied and cruelly trained since childhood.

One who eventually grew up to be a black-bellied cold-blooded mercenary and successfully overpowered his despicable foster father that always treated him like reserve food and ordered him around like a dog.

4-4.2 stars - fairly good and easy to binge-read, but one of Shui Qiancheng's minor works.

First time I've read a non-crematorium by this author, which is kind of refreshing. The setting and MC is the best thing about the novel. It's written before My Little Poplar and Blazing Armour, both of which are overall better novels, but it's interesting to see one of SQC's first attempts at writing an action-packed novel with heavy focus on military stuff.

I enjoyed the bond between the MC and ML and how they both grow.... more>> The setting, centered around a mercenary group who kills for money and live outside normal society, was quite well-done, although it steered a bit too much into the more patriotic territory in the second half, which I felt didn't suit it so much.

The MC: Is a breath of fresh air - not the dainty or romantic type, he's kind of a slob, cold-hearted and represses his emotions to the extent that he struggles for most of the story to come to terms with how he actually feels about the ML, only acknowledging his feelings and sense of obligation towards his mercenary comrades, not towards the boy he raised from a young age. If the novel had been told from the ML's perspective, the MC would have been portrayed as a scum. As it is, he's painted in a more sympathetic light and the reader gets to understand his actions, although he's definitely not that nice to the poor ML. But he is also somewhat forced to come to terms with the fact that he does a lot of wrong things. He's a tough killer who's not afraid of anything (except probably his own feelings). He's also kind of an a*hole for much of the story, but with his own life philosophy and code of honor that made me respect him throughout the story.

The ML: A bit underwhelming, although this is the first time I've sympathized more with the ML than the MC in a SQC novel. Probably because the ML is not a scum (unlike most of the author's gongs) and is more mature and well-adjusted than the MC - if we disregard his obsession with his 'Daddy'. He does have the possessiveness and yandere-like nature of most of the author's MLs though, but I felt it wasn't so bad here, since the MC does let him down repeatedly, which all things considered is pretty traumatic for him.

Side-characters: They're okay, I think the 'found family' theme in the mercenary group was interesting and could have been explored more, but overall it's obvious that this is an early work by the author, the camaraderie in My Little Poplar and Blazing Armour is more developed. I liked Al and Tang Tingzhi a lot, and I like that the author inserted some female characters who were badass in their own right. The villain felt kind of underwhelming, I wish his motives and connection to the main characters had been explored more. It feels like SQC often struggles to write compelling villains, but here he was just kind of meh - although

Spoiler

an interesting take on SQC's love of making the ML's dad the villain in most of her works - I swear 99% of her fictional fathers are bad people, while the moms are usually nice and understanding.

[collapse]

Smut: There's a healthy dose, and I liked the progress of the CP, under the circumstances. This is pseudo-in*est, make no mistake, even the characters themselves are aware of this. They even have some moral qualms about it. The MC does consider the ML his son, and the ML does think of the MC as his father, even though he is aware that he has real parents and initially don't want to call the MC 'Dad'. Take the r*pe tag seriously, the author frequently writes explicit noncon, and this novel is no exception. I do think that the relationship was much more healthy and balanced than in most of the author's work, despite the in*est.

People with a fondness for 'daddy kinks' will like the relationship, and the smut gets very explicit. There's also a very cute side-CP who gets a whole smut chapter for themselves in the extras - the author worked hard to feed her readers 'meat'. It also features some beastiality.

Plot: It was okay, good enough to make the novel enjoyable to read, not interesting enough to keep me at the edge of my seat. Lots of action scenes that were well-written.

Romance: Not as developed as in most of the author's other novels, but it progressed in a way that made sense. I was intrigued how the MC would end up accepting the ML, since for the longest time he had no romantic feelings for him and only thought of him as his 'son'. I think the development was relatively satisfying, although not as heartfelt as in some of the author's other novels. Even at the end I wasn't completely sure if the MC just loved the ML as his son, but enjoyed the s*x, or what. I think for the MC, the relationship kind of was a mixture of different types of love, and I was okay with that, but it's not a very romantic novel.

Angst: It wouldn't be SQC without some angst, but it was very light in this novel. A few parts stood out and were pretty heart-wrenching because they were so understated.

Good read if you want action, smut, daddy kink, slightly yandere ML, no-nonsense tough guy MC. <<less

I really really really like this novel and I think it is absolutly deserve more and more Recognition

The MC was sucha unfamiliar shou who have no complete understanding for the right and wrong nor family principle nor emotion intelligence (he couldn’t even refute his adapted son when he told him that he liked him bc he think everybody have the right to do whatever they want) and that exactly what it make it more intersting

Andddd then.... imagine him pick up a child and raise him as a son in... more>> mercenary group..... Just think about it make one laugh lol the couple perfectly match immature older shou (but have high IQ though) × mature Younger gong (with high EQ)

There was quite heart warming and funny moment int the begining.... to watch a kid raise between sucha horrible ppl but without really judging them since he is still child rather try to survive between those bunch of scum and adopt with them and also.... Develop feeling for his adoptive father

As for the couple I think I like thier happy ending even though it sound like " I need you bc I love you and you need me bc you need a home or somthing hold you on in this life "

And since our ML didn't mind Receive the equal love.... so it is fine actually

I found it very touching even though it is not your normal romantic relationship

Spoiler

the MC did hurt our ML several time but I truly think he didn't have any choice like you can’t Expect from him accept you immediately and leave the only thing he believe in (the mercenary group) for you even though he can't protect you anymore right Chengze? But shan ming fault that he didn't really talk with chenze before and just leave him simply

For second Cheating actually it is more sad.... Like Chengze father literally killed one of their comrade after another leaving shan ming with no choice but to try save the rest of them by handing Chengze to him since he know that his father won't kill him... And in the end he got the blame from his comrade (I remember them accepting super dangerous mission just for money sake, then they had the face to accuse shan ming to bring that sh*t to them even though he abandond his son for them) and from Chengze who didn't really care about his comrade dying one after another but the only thing he know that shan ming abandond him again

This story really good!!!

I don't know which part its "rape" Tho,.. I mean, when I see ML and MC.. There is no force things between them. I'm agree if there is an argument with both of them, but the s*xual tension like when both of them get angry then s*x was they only way to solved it. MC enjoyed it too tho.

In the beginning im worried this story gonna be like "sissy", or other ML with same bastard behaviour. But I'm completely wrong, and thats suprise me a lot.

ML was... more>> trully loyal towards MC, he loved and cheers him a lot, never want to hurt him, maybe he was the most green flag Top the author made in her story. When I see her other works, I trully find this one is masterpiece without bastard or crazy ML. At least this ML crazy behaviour come out couse the MC really heartless... Ah poor ML.

For the MC.. He kinda strange (?) I mean, he never been good person in the beginning tho. But honestly I can feel he's obessive a lot with the ML and how he's been so jealous towards ML real blood father. I only can say, MC really loved ML so much with egoist and selfish desired.

Well, anyways this story was kinda good, recomended for someone who like beastalty (?) relationship, lmao. Daddy kink, and don't take r*pe in this novel seriusly, when I read it till the end, I still cant find where the r*pe is. I only see the owner (MC) get bitten by his loyal puppy (ML) couse playing with fire so much, lmao. <<less

This novel is a hidden gem! If really deserves more readers. I skimmed over the synopsis and thought the story was going to be a cub-raising (gone wrong) novel where the MC was so kind and caring to the kid ML that ML fell in love with him. In fact, it couldn't be more wrong LOL. MC is despicable and a mercenary through and through, strong but with a lives-in-the-moment personality. He "bullied" ML as a kid so much I was thinking of adding the child abuse tag haha. The... more>> comedy is on point.

For anyone worrying about age gap/romance between the 2:

Spoiler

It is a 13 year age gap. MC picks up ML when he is 18 and he is 5. So you can imagine a teenager picking up a 5 year old and being a great father hehe. Kissing/smut/romance doesn't start until MC is 32 and ML is 19.

[collapse]

Regarding the r*pe tag and the other comment:

Spoiler

I agree with hiryukaede's comment. There really isn't "rape" exactly between the 2 of them. At most ML is a bit forceful (at certain emotional moments) but MC just rolls his eyes and lets him do it without too much psychological pressure. You'll see once you read the novel that MC's personality isn't the type to "believe" he gets r*ped. If it was an enemy forcing him he would think of it as torture, and if it was someone else that forced him he'd probably think "it is what it is" and enjoy it because he also feels good.

edit: ok NVM I forgot there was 1/1.5 scene were it could be classified as r*pe were ML wasn't exactly sober (this doesn't excuse his actions, but he was extremely apologetic and regretful and guilty afterwards etc whatever. MC got hurt but he didn't give a crap as usual lol)

[collapse]

Side characters are very well-developed too. Always interesting and funny interactions that adds to the story. MC loves his mercenary group and so will you.

Kudos to the translator K too: thanks for your hard work :D The writing and translation is the one of the most well-written action I've ever seen. I usually skip over paragraphs of fighting scenes because it's repetitive, but this novel's translations illustrated every single action in my head beautifully.

The smut scenes are also very hot and detailed :) <<less

Im a simple reader with a simple mindset so having a badass character in an action pack novel is enough to satisfy me. Specially if translator-sama provides such great translation🥰🥰 thank you boss. Besides its yaoi with so much spice sprinkle around the whole story!! How much I could ask for?

So far every character seem more solid for me. The MC has his own mindset that never wavers and despite our ML having this cheat of bein superhuman it doesnt really made him over power every enemies all the time.... more>> It might be early to deduced since am still halfway through but its pretty much a good flow that makes everything more exciting.

So I highly recommend this novel not just because of my own preference but having SQC as its author is enough reason to give this a try.

However, I hope everyone should be mindfull with the TAGS since their present for a reason😆😉 <<less

BEST. BEST. BEST.

Good things need to be said thrice lol. This really was a hidden gem. I wouldn't have started it thinking it was suger-filled cub raising novel if I hadn't already read author's MLP.

I love everything about this novel. The action part is amazing (also the smexy ones hehe). My favorite part of the novel has to be in the first half where SM brings up and protects SCZ in his own clumsy way annd my least favorite part is most definitely where SM and SCZ both starts acting... more>> like a dumba** towards the end. But I ain't gonna lie there's just sth about obsessive MLs like SCZ that gives me tons of nosebleeds! I was also quite disappointed about their final confrontation with SY as I was expecting some more action given the previous examples but anyway the smexy scenes makes up for everything haha.

Anyway hope this novel gets more recognition! 🍻 <<less

Action packed mercenary thriller. While the story slowed down towards the end, 5/5 stars for entertainment and a super unique and interesting MC.

It’s rare for a story to have an as*hole immature MC who has many bad points but also sticks to his guns (both figuratively and literally!) - I really adore him.

  • The beginning: 18 year old jaded, cold hearted MC picks up stray 5 year old ML and proceeds to cruelly train him to become the perfect mercenary and fighter, and filial son... extreme child abuse. ML grows up with vendetta and obsession with MC
  • MC is lazy, cold hearted, immature and an as*hole but sticks by his ethos and prioritises his mercenary family over ML. Really can’t emphasise how rare it is to have a MC, WITHOUT a heart of gold who prioritises family over love
    Spoiler

multiple times as MC chooses his mercenary family over ML.

    [collapse]
*ending spoilers* ultimately MC ends up finding he’s been changed by ML, slowly, and realised he yearning for a safe space and fearing death. They purchase a home together
  • Mercenary friends are fleshed out, including female soldiers and side couples
  • Mercenary missions are interesting and INTENSE

I've never seen a book with so much potential go to waste

The only reason why I'm even giving this high rating is because of the plot. Plotwise I'll give it a 10/10

BUT,

[collapse]

Heartless mercenary MC x cute kid turned obsessive psycho strong ML. Both are morally impaired.

There is no cute fluff here. There's blood, angst, survival, sword and gun fights, explosions, constant fighting, international killing, ... more>>
Spoiler

explicit smut, monster kink, pseudo in*est (adoptive father/son), and biological experimenting.

[collapse]

The mercenary MC is 18 when he takes a 5 year old kid (ML) out of a dangerous jungle and raises him ruthlessly in a mercenary company. After several time jumps, betrayals, serious injuries and many, many gunfights and explosions in wartorn, lawless areas of the world, the 19 year old ML finally overpowers the MC...

Not my cup of tea, but 4 stars for the complete, and good, translation.
Spoiler

Also, I appreciated that there were several female soldiers and they weren't cannon fodder, but strong characters in and of themselves.

Not blood related so not physical in*est but I kind of wish their relationship dynamic was less father-son familial to make this an A+ novel for me. Interaction wise it works because of their characters (freedom, pleasure-seeking MC and caring kink ML). Mostly consensual, non consensual scenes were ok, acceptable levels.

Story was really exciting in terms of the mercenary setting with the random (lol suddenly finding a dragon somewhere in China and bio-engineering) dragon-humans thrown into the mix setting the main underlying plot. Close shaves with death that felt realistic... more>> enough. Kept me engaged throughout the novel with the different build up missions and romantic interactions between the leads.

Spoiler

Almost thought MC would transform also but didn't happen

[collapse]

Really liked the side couple too, even more than the main couple actually.

Not my favourite type of lead characters: MC is too man-child, only taking proper responsibility of things much later when he's pushed to the final edge and finally getting some maturity. It fit well with the character setting and psyche of a mercenary though. Wish it delved more into his past background and set him up better. ML feels... like a confused character sometimes. Like the emotions he has for MC stems from resentment & admiration > skip a couple of logical steps to land at > need for possession and 'love'/accompaniment?? Possible but not a natural flow for me. Why did he not get any stirrings at all for Ayer—a known good-looking dude with skills as well if it's just based on looks? If it's based on presence, other people also helped train him. MC treated him like a personal s*ave tbh but did care for him in life/death mission situations. Not a strong connection for me.

Spoiler

It made me laugh out loud when ML kept trying to lick MC to see what the fuss was about though.

[collapse]

Smut not bad.

Might re-read.

Also, they need to stop slapping each other. <<less

I love thisss! Iz hot, there’s action, theres romance. And fantasy a bit hahaha, haven’t finished it cause I need some happy read, and this is quite serious. Their issues are still there and I wanna rest for a bit!

DEFINITELY recommended, but there is ofcourze a daddy issue HAHAHAH and the romance is a bit in the middle? Or 3/4 of the story cauze it started from when ML was a kid.

their reasoning are pretty acceptable, I don’t really see much problem about the daddy issue.

Spoiler

im at the part where the main villain is MLs father, and MC and ML will be separated again cuz MC will go back to columbia.
