On that day, the fog blocked everything.

On that day, he became the captain of a ghost ship.

On that day, he stepped through the thick fog and confronted a completely subverted and fragmented world— the old order had vanished, strange phenomena dominated the endless seas beyond civilized society, and isolated island city-states and fleets of ships challenged the sea that had become the last ember of lights for the civilized world. All of this while the shadows of the old days were still stirring in the deep sea, waiting to devour this world that was about to die.

But for the new captain of the ghost ship Vanished, there was only one question he had to consider first — Who knows how to steer this ship?!

This is a Lovecraftian tale of a ghost captain. The world is awesome, the interactions are funny and the story is convoluted and mysterious.

The author unfortunately doesn't manage to blend these elements (the story is either mysterious or funny, not both at the same time), but still it is very enjoyable to read.

Really fun story which builds a really interesting and engaging arc, just finished the first story arc and would recommend everyone to try it out. Also lacking the some of the more repetitive tropes that most light novels possess nowadays :)

Characters are quite unserious. The mystery is fine but it feels like the author tried to make every character and scene comedic for no reason.

I'd say that it's good enough to bring me back after leaving it. My first read was till c59, and since then I've left it for 2 months to bulk up on chapters. Getting back on it was easy, the book still intrigues me even with the 2 months of absence, and even now I'm still waiting for more translated chapters to come out.

As some said the first few chapters are rather slow, but it's all good after.

Thanks to the translators who've brought one of the best I've read in... more>> this genre. <<less

I can only say - Deep Sea Embers really sets my blood boil! The thrill of every arc's chapters and how everything is connected. Very good foreshadowing. The setting, as other readers stated already, is grounded on "Lovecraft setting" and Lord of the Mysteries (also loved that one, too) to which I personally like, the mysteries are properly laid out.

For me, the story is well executed. Enough for me to marathon read all existing chapters in less than 3 days.

While this is a very good novel, especially compared to all the other slop constantly being churned out, I would not give it 5 stars. 4, 6 maybe, but not 5. I'll make this into a pro and cons list.

Pros:

+ Competent main character.

... more>> + Interesting world/worldbuilding.

+ Well made arcs and arc endings.

+ Good characters.

Cons:

- At certain (rare, but very noticeable) times, I found myself bored by non-stop over-explanation of things. Some of it made me wonder "Why are you telling this to the readers? This is in no way interesting and barely even relevant".

- Lack of normal settlements. Every place the main character has visited has had some sort of city-ending event happen to it. Now, this depends more on the future chapters, but considering the fact that all of this is happening at around the same time in all the city-states, it would be reasonable to find at least one that the MC is too late to save (because it's already gone, obviously), which I very much doubt will happen.

- This might be related to the first -, but the pace is fairly slow.

Neutral stuff (could be good or bad, depending on preference) :

No romance

OP mc

Comedic (less obnoxious than the usual "comedy" novels)

The MC can be seen as a pushover sometimes. <<less

My assessment could be a little biassed, considering I enjoy novels set in Victorian period.

As the novel is in its earliest phases, I don't really have much to say, everything I say will effectively be a tiny spoiler.

There are Visions, Anomalies, subspace, churches, hidden organisations, gods... which provide a lot of LoM feelings to me.

Pacing is excellent, and translation is properly done.

Rating: 9+/10 (take it with a grain of salt, as I've only read 100 chaps)

Translation+writing: 9/10

As a horror novel 'deep sea embers' is more developed on the gore thriller part rather than the supernatural yet it manages to slowly mix the three into something that might develop into one of the better horror stories we can find around this site.

What I highly appreciate in this novel is the world that is not overly described as we rather start exploring it with the protagonist. Little by little many mysteries starts converging on top of the Vanished and as questions starts pilling it seems like the goal... more>> of this novel is not to bring simple and straightforward answers that would fulfill the instant curiosity of the reader but rather build up the anticipation for some grand reveals later on that might not be the best case scenario for the MC.

I would recommend this story to anyone that enjoyed the slower paced but way better written Lord of Mysteries that is focused on what the character has to prepare before facing dangers rather than being fixed upon the concept of strong will and emotional attachment. <<less
