A gacha game where ‘character draws’ can only be done through cash payments.

Ordinary office worker Lee Min-joon becomes the first reviewer of a mobile game developed by a friend.

Starting the game without expectations, he finds himself dozing off to a tedious opening.

When he opens his eyes again, he is in the world of the game.

― Necromancer, you are to lead and control the heroes.

Caught up in the tutorial, he ends up summoning his first hero.

He’s delighted by the seemingly powerful and handsome hero, but it turns out the hero is a low-level character with no memories or proper weapons…?

“The one who awakened the long-slumbering dead must be you, right?”

Perhaps due to his height and sturdy build, the man exuded an overwhelming aura. Even the shabby armor and worn shovel in his hand couldn’t diminish his presence.

“I have something to ask. Who exactly am I?”

“Why are you asking me that…?”

A weak hero with lost memories and a crumbling world.

He must use any means to survive and witness the end of the world.

Will he be able to safely return to his original world?

Writing a review for this since no-one else has!

I'll be updating this review as the story progresses.

So far, the story has been consistently excellent!

... more>> To clarify on the line from the description, "The one who awakened the long-slumbering dead must be you, right?"

This is not a gameified trope of summoning the "chosen hero" or anything. The novel has spirit summoners, which is the occupation that the MC has, use necromancy to forcibly revive dead warriors of the past and bind their existence to them. It has dark undertones.

Anywho, onto the characters.

The MC, Shane, is a pragmatic opportunist. Whereas, the ML, who is purportedly named Meltier Verschte, is a gentle and mature love interest.

The shock when I found out!

As much as I love reading about colder characters, Meltier is unique and refreshing. He's not just one-dimensional though; he definitely hides some of his thoughts behind a smile. I'm not quite saying he's two-faced, just that there are some more cognizant layers. The pivotal point of his character is that he has lost his memories, so it's interesting to see that this is only the tip of the iceberg with him.

As a narrative psychic, I can definitely say that he was very strong and famous in the past. And there's that weird anti-meme (SCP moment) around everyone being interested in his name but not recognising it.

(chapter 10) There's a new guy to the MC's party?
Spoiler

I don't know much about him other than he might be a 5 star, and he's a bratty king.

EDIT 21/07/2024: His name is Parzan, and he has an unknown affiliation with Melter in the past.

[collapse]

The coolest part about this novel is the worldbuilding. Everything fits seamlessly. I like how it's a world that heavily resembles gacha game conventions, but does not have any roundabout magic or systems supporting the structure to justify it. Money. Capitalism happens.

Meta-cons:

About the translation. Just a heads up, it's being translated by AI. However, it's far better than the average MTL, but it does have a few minor flaws.

I think somewhere in chapter... maybe 2 or 3? Pronouns changed to she/her once or twice. But never again.

A neutral observation is that after chapter 3, the text switches to using they/them pronouns for the MC. I'm not too bothered by it, but it would be more optimal for he/him pronouns, as it had been established before.

Another thing is that sometimes the term for "spirit summoner" may change to necromancer, phantasmagoria, or spiritmancer. If Chrys is reading this, please at least bother to keep it consistent in the future, thank you.

EDIT 21/07/2024: I think Chrys chose necromancer as the official term! And the pronoun issue is mostly fixed. Good enough, I guess

Meta-pros:

A new chapter is uploaded at 1:00PM every day. Though, you will have to go to the translation website to find it, since for some reason the newer chapters aren't showing in Latest Releases.

EDIT: Attempted to add the newer chapters beyond c6 to the Latest Release.

EDIT 2: I think Chrys has decided to upload the chapters manually, because the uploading time has been slightly inconsistent, and the uploading schedule has slowed down. It's still pretty fast though!

EDIT 3: Apparently, there's a manhwa based off this! If you're from bato. to, leave a review and say hi! <<less

I started reading this novel 4 days ago because I

found the manhwa first. I thought what a fresh and interesting way to start another isekai story. Beware! This isn't a typical power-leveling or slice of life isekai story!

The first half of the novel had good world building, engaging challenges and intriguing characters. But don't assume that this story fleshes out their characters well.

The positive and the negative parts about the protagonist Shane:

    • Good: comes from the modern world and therefore has knowledge of game mechanics, tactics and strategy. probably a casual gamer in Korea, but develops his skills in tactics and strategy in the game
    • bright / optimistic personality in the beginning, typical ordinary guy protagonist who jokes around with friends and tries to stay out of trouble when it doesn't concern ML, personality leaning towards the natural airheaded cute boy type, book-smart, has common sense
    • Bad: has common sense, but doesn't use it. at least not, when it counts
    • Spoiler

      1. The protagonist faces enemies who are far above his level. Due to lacking information and experience he is saved by the ML's plot armor like features. He gets pulled along by his lamb guide and his hero. He definitely plays the role of
planning strategies and leaving it to ML to come up with and implement tactics.

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

      2. The main challenge of the protagonist ist the lack of information imposed on him by the plot. How he receives and processes new crucial information for his life-mission is truly unique:
An agonizing repeated process of: 'My plan is working but something important feels off. But I can't find out what it is, because there is so much happening right in this moment in front of me. I have to deal with the current life-threatening situation first so I have time and the capacity to care about the key-ominous feeling concerning our current situation later.' Btw that never happens, because some side character or the enemy will slap the protagonist in the face with hints about the truth first. A wall of text in the story is dedicated to the protagonist's path to knowlegde. First someone has to make an ominous statement. Then Shane feels something is off, but has no time to care about it at the moment. Then the situation gets worse the enemy has to ask about Shane's opinion on the hint while mocking him. Shane has no answer except: I believe in ML. Is shocked by enemy giving him the revelation and almost dying. Is then saved by ML and the lamb.

Yes, he was designed to be like that by the plot. Because of his lack information he can't even begin to think about his own purpose. He truly is a marionette. He solely exist for ML but this left me feeling ominous.

      Spoiler

The MC started loosing his cool and discretion towards the latter half of the end, implicating them all was a drag to read. Him saving the ML arc was underwhelming. The story's unique and interesting world building had left the chat by now. It solely relied on MC's talk-justu to somehow make this tasteless Matrix+ Mirai Nikki-esque major revelation at the end hold any weight or meaning in the reader's mind. I was skimming the tactics and solutions at the end, because at that point, the plot had decided to take the easiest way to end any rushed and abandoned isekai/ gaming plot. No surprises. Only ~230 chapters of build-up to be immeasurably disappointed. My day is ruined.

      [collapse]
The ML is decently developed.

He is fine as a deuteragonist. Nothing much to say about him, since the story already did enough. My personal impression of him is that I felt nothing special about him until the end of the story. Only at the last two chapters I was annoyed at him because of how
Spoiler

his lack of communication and actions was even more of his already typical sacrifice behaviour.

These characters are behind giving us this story of an endless redemption story. The words most spoken are: You are a failure! You are to blame! You tool should do what you are supposed to do. Why should I tell you the truth. You don't need to know that. You don't have or need that information. That is why you can't understand anyway.... Holy beast are not gods. They aren't people either. But they behave like your aunt or uncle at family reunions. The blame-pity party is strong here. And every character gets a piece of the ultimate insult-cake. Until we are in the final chapter/ epilogue where the family pet circus dissolves and gets back into pet-day care. This is what happens when gods/ pet-owners don't train them properly or decide to abandon them at some wasteland to die. I can understand why they behave like that, but their bitter whining s**ked out any sympathy for their good-natured world-saving intentions.

      [collapse]
The plot:

Interessting setting. I liked the world building. The MC's struggle in the beginning in accepting the world's morals and standards. It was light until the fights started. The fight against the enemies in the first few arcs were intriging and felt mysterious. But as more of the truth was revealed the freshness and a major pull-factor was lost. The way struggle is portrayed was believeable. But not the way they got out of struggles. ML saves the day again and again. If the MC doesn't know how to proceed, just believe in the ML.

Spoiler

The way the story progressed after fighting the 2nd major enemy left me in awe. At that point I finally understood, that the MC really isn't a saving- everyone- is-my-only-way person and a not the only capable commander/ strategist in the world. Someone tell me how another guild party in the background managed to destroy the fifth enemy by only using the strategies and information provided by the MC. When he and his guild almost didn't manage to with prior half-backed knowlegde because of the massive mutations and changes to the enemy because of some merges/ power-ups. And why make it twelve enemies but only barely showing six of them.

[collapse]

My conclusion:

A long story with an acceptable translation. It was easy to read in the beginning... I liked the way the plot twists were presented. The fights in the beginning are engaging. The latter enemies have interessting lore too. If it wasn't for a lot of overworked MC trying to survive his lack of information-thought walls and subpar deduction skills it would be a little more enjoyable to watch him gaining power. As for the romance part... only starving BL fans would call their flirting in the main story enough for a romance story. MC and ML are so busy saving themselves, that to me their interactions didn't spark any fluffy feelings or hopeful indulgence at all. It would have worked out as bromance too.

The story progressed really fast, because the enemies wanted it to end. The ML wanted it to end. The author wanted it to end. And me personally wanted it to end even more. I recommed it for people who aren't too familiar with sci-fi, plot-driven isekai stories and have a lot of patience.

This story is amazing! Like the previous comment says, it has great world building and Meltier and Shane are very 3 dimensional! I loved the mystery of Meltier's past, and Shane's attitude towards the heroes!😁 I finished it in one go despite my short attention span😆

Btw, if u go to the website for this story, u can see 'A Story For Taking A Break' s, which show the perspective of other characters! Pls check them out, all of them are really intriguing!

Sry if the review isn't good haha, it's my... more>> first review I'm writing cos it's so good that I had to do this 2 hours before my exams😅😆, plus the comment below covered everything you need to know about the story! My main point is just don't accidentally miss the 'A Story For Taking A Break' s and the side stories, since they're not linked to novelupdates, and remember to check out the manga for this story! It's not complete as of now, but the art is splendid!

P.S.
Spoiler

they have s*x in the side stories👀

Alright I've finished binging this novel in a few hours over the span of 2 days. Heads up, as previous reviews mentioned this is AI translated. I'm not rating based on fan translation, which a good number of people do on this website. I'm going to rate the novel based on how it executed romance, story, ending, and worldbuilding/terms (specific words that build the world). This is a 5 star rating. Below are some nit picky parts:

Romance: 9.5/10 - It's not a whole shoujo like story where the two characters... more>> are all over each other. I really like how Meltier and Shane grow close naturally while chaos stirs up in the background. My poor boy Shane never has a moment to rest. Although I wish there were more lovey dovey moments, the existing ones in the main story satisfied me. Thinking logically, typical BL smut mechanics would be out of place here LOL.

Meltier seriously makes you melt by how sweet he is, constantly checking in with Shane. Greenest flag ever, but that doesn't mean he's anxiety free. Shane also takes care of the golden retriever boy. They're a good pair.

Story: 8.75/10 - In the beginning, it was hard for me to get into the story because some parts would drag on. I kept reading and the experience was a lot better. Readers should try not to skim because important parts could be missed. The big reveal was not as amazing as I've expected. Maybe because I've read a lot of novels with similar themes, but it was a nice read! Enough to make me cry near the ending.

Ending: Around an 8.75 to a 9 /10. It's hard to say. At one point I thought it was fitting and another, I wanted more of an oomph! I'll give it a 9 because the epilogue/side stories were cute and filled in the void in my heart.

World building/Terms: 10/10 - Knowing gacha / game mechanics would help, but it's not needed. Shane re-explains situations or scenarios in our modern day language. I love when he nerds out. World building is excellent. Everything fits together (again, it's best not to skim too hard) once you get over the first few chapters hurdle. Not a potato chip novel, requires some thinking.

Your opinions could differ from mine when you finish reading. I enjoyed this story despite AI translations— pronouns go she/her, and then they/them... POV also changes. It can't be helped. I'm thankful I've got a chance to read it after finding the manhwa online! 😳 Meltier is one of the very few blonde hair guys who've captured my heart. (It's always the typical black haired MLs 😂) I think readers would really love him. <<less

Having only read 5 chapters, it seems premature to comment.

But I am tired of the protagonist receiving information but failing to absorb it, and blaming others when something goes wrong.

Although we already know that this place is just designed as a game world for some reason and is actually another real world, we still insist on using game mechanisms to understand and force others.

This has nothing to do with the writing style. I can't stand the protagonist's s*upidity and goldfish-like memory.

This novel is a fun read, I was binge-reading and the world-building is executed well, and the characters have their own respective complexities to them. I will say the chapters look short... BUT each one tends to be at least 17, 000 - 20, 000 words (approximately 2, 000 words with 'A story taking a break'), so this will be a longer read then you'd think (which I like).

I will admit this stories world-building and the direction is went was not where I expected it to go but I think... more>> that makes it all the more unique for a 'i got transported to fantasy land' premise. There was not a moment when reading where I felt bored or disinterested. It keeps your interest because finding the answer to questions about the ML's, MC's, and relating characters circumstances is a part of the plot.

In terms of plot, at times it really feels like its shades of grey, most characters actions are done with the best intentions.

Romantically:

Spoiler

MC and ML have their affectionate moments but the pay off or revelation of feelings does not come till the later half of the novel. Otherwise, they get along quite nicely ML becomes aware of his feelings first, and is physically affectionate in his own ways, nothing too malicious but enough to make the MC think about it.

There is no second ML or anything like that, and everyone clocks MC and ML romantically lol. MC is oblivious to it, and when MC realizes their feelings they do sit on it which I found annoying (cos its obvious ML loves em) but his concerns or indecisiveness comes from confusion, and fear of a potential rejection. ML similarly, does not pursue a confession or demand a relationship for compassionate reasons for the MC (plot shtick).

Otherwise, They are generally quite respectful and caring to one another.

[collapse]

Fantasy-wise:

Spoiler

MC is essentially in a Gacha world where necromancers have full autonomy over heroes in terms of commands and combat.

MC does not, and will not have any combat ability that'll have actual stakes in the main story. MC plans and curates strategies with his heroes and they do the main fighting, this is not exclusive to MC as all necromancers are like this (plot reasons). The implications of video-game to real-world scenarios is explored in this novel from an ethical POV.

[collapse]

Overall, I found myself itching to continue reading this story when reading it and I found it quite enjoyable. It's not perfect by any means (with that said I'm giving a 5 stars cos nothing in the story personally pissed me off), but I personally enjoyed the novel and its conclusion. <<less
