I read 150+ chapters and quit because - I lost interest in reading this book. Here are a few reasons for that:

1. The Author. He is clearly being heavily belittled by someone or even a group of people. As there is a lot of negativity in his book, and I wouldn't mind if it weren't for point #2 and #3.

2. Logical holes. There are a lot of logical problems in the book, especially with the logic of the characters and the plot. And all because of a humiliated author who... more>> pours his bitterness into the book. From here comes the Protagonist, who lives a second life, (although he doesn't remember much information about the future, but he already has the experience of the years he has lived). Who at first behaves quite decently, but then begins to become very, very s*upid.

3. Sacrifice for the sake of the plot. The author, sometimes, completely changes the character and behavior of the main character to get him into trouble and put him in a difficult situation, all for the sake of the plot. But because of such abrupt changes in the plot, the protagonist seems like a dullard or even some kind of psycho.

If the author, after another emotional outburst, had not immediately inserted a new chapter, and would have left the text for 24 hours, and then with a clear head would have edited it, you could have avoided all these problems.

I am extremely disappointed with this book because - because it started off very well.
I do not recommend it for reading. <<less

This novel reminded me of "I'm in Hollywood" (listed earlier in NovelUpdates). A Chinese got the chance to reborn as poor American, then created legendary business empire and his own harem of hundreds Tinseltown beauties.

The mainframe was similar, but they're definitely not copycats. Chicago 1990 had better storytelling and improved main character.

The main character, APLUS, was an American of mixed Chinese-African descent (one-of-a-kind black MC with Chinese heart, a rarity among NU novels). He did not clearly remember his past (hence the "amnesia" tag), but he got flashbacks in random... more>> occassions.

Those flashbacks gave him inspirations to create popular musics, movies, sign future talented artists, and even buy stocks and investment. However, because they were just flashbacks, the reliability was questionable. APLUS realized it later after more than a thousand chapters, but readers would realize it earlier. For example, he knew search engine would be popular, but which search engine is best? And also, what would happen if he lost those flashbacks?

APLUS also used his wealth to step into business and politics. Here, we began to see how unreliable his "insights". He got involved in high profile business wars and political intrigues with uncertain results. He even got shot in one thrilling arc.

Till 1500 chapter-ish (original novel is still ongoing), APLUS got more prosperous with exceptional luck. But there's still a lot of heart-stopping foreshadowing for incoming arcs.

Some teasers: He invested in Madoff fund for years and even introduced his friends to Madoff (yes, THAT infamous Madoff). On the other hand, he's a law student who was taught by "Michelle's husband" in University of Chicago and also royal donor to both D and R party (yes, THAT famous Michelle).

In terms of harem, he was definitely a scum. He avoided involvement with underage girls and treated his harem a little bit better than "I'm in Hollywood" MC. But he liked MFFFFF++ or*y and NTR his own allies.

Soo, yeah. This is a very interesting novel. There's top 90's music playlist, gang conflicts, showbiz, business wars, election intrigues, scandals, spy works, etc. I would give it five stars. But there's some values in it that might not be suitable for everyone.

First, the depictions of USA might not be correct (I think it's historically accurate and there's no critical mistake, but I'm unsure about its cultural/political aspects because I'm non-US).

Second, the MC was antihero. He's naturally two-faced. He could be kind, but could also kill people. He donated to anti-gun movements, but also lobbied to get war provision orders. And so on.

Third, the novel did not shy away from vulgar sexualized acts and fetishes. It was not "smut" per se because the author did not write it in explicit detail, but we knew what we read. So, if you would be bothered with it, please look for other novels.

--------------

Additional edit after final chapter:

Spoiler

This novel had extremely bad hollywood-style ending, like the deaths of Marilyn Monroe, Tupac, Malcolm X, and JFK (IYKWIM). The quality dropped drastically after around 1500 chapters, and then rushed headlong into an ending that didn't make sense and left a lot of things unanswered. I regretted it immediately after reading the last chapter today. Be warned.

[collapse]

I'm keeping my Chicago 1990 playlist because all of them are really good. But I cut my rating for the novel to 3 star (initially 5) because of fu***ed up latter chapters that continuously haunted my mind. <<less

Holy shit! This story is annoying af!

The pacing is too slow. I'm 700 chapters in and he made 1 movie and 1 album only. Imagine reading over 80 chapters of audition for a movie.

Then there's the MC. He's is supposed to be a adult Chinese in African American teenager, so at times he comes off as mature rational person, but sometimes he acts as a 80s nd 90s rapper. He had many opportunities to cut off gang connections but got pulled in deeper and deeper. He can't keep it in... more>> his pants and always gets into trouble due to his lust.

Furthermore author is totally a simp for Mariah Carey.

Author wanted to write realistic fiction but MC's character contradicts too much. I am dropping it. <<less
