Gu Yin fainted after working overtime. When she opened her eyes, she had transmigrated into a farmer’s daughter-in-law. That daughter-in-law had a tragic life. She was sold as a child bride when she was young. After a few years, she finally had a happy life when her man was called by the court to be conscripted into the army.

Gu Yin did not suffer herself, she set up a stall and opened a store relying on her family’s craftsmanship, and still lived a prosperous life.

Seeing that life was getting better, her mother-in-law advised her to remarry while she was young, and she also found an honest and handsome poor scholar for her.

Until a man who should have died in battle suddenly came back on the Ghost day.
……
Wu Qingyi dedicated the first half of his life to his family, his mother, younger brother and wife… and dedicated the next half to the world.

He was named the military marshal of the world. The first thing he did was to go back to his hometown to build his family’s grave.

Unfortunately, the day he went back happened to be the fifteenth day of July.

“Daughter-in-law! There’s a ghost!” His mother was still the angry old lady in his memory.

“Sister-in-law, help!” The younger brother was the younger brother who grew up in his fantasy.

“Where did the shameless rat come from, dare to pretend to be a ghost in front of my Wu family?!” The sweet wife in memory rushed over with a kitchen knife…

“Don’t bully my mother!” A boy about five or six years old also rushed over…

Wu Qingyi:? ? ?

Who would explain to him, how when he was eight years away from home, his wife had a five year old child? What was the situation?

This story was unexpectedly cute and charming. The synopsis made it seem like it would be very cliché and while there were some common tropes, the author manages to add some fun twists that elevate the story.

Although I've read a lot of novels about cooking and running a restaurant, this author still managed to surprise me with the innovative tactics the MC used to draw in customers. For example, ... more>>
Spoiler

in the beginning, I thought it was hilarious that the MC asked her MIL to publicly berate her in front of their stall to gain sympathy and drive up their sales.

[collapse]

As the ML, there isn't actually much to say about him. He's a good guy and he and the MC get on well enough but the role he plays in the story is small compared to some other characters. He doesn't appear until about halfway through the story and he and the MC are very lowkey as a couple. I think it's because both of their primary love languages are acts of service and gift giving. Most of the time the MC shows love by cooking for the ML while he often walks her home after work. The two are very pure and shy so they barely have skin to skin contact and they don't actually enter the bridal chamber until the extras so I think if you're looking for an extremely passionate and romantic couple then this wouldn't be the text for you.

While the romance is extremely slow and subtle, the family dynamics between the MC, her tsundere mother-in-law, sensible baby brother-in-law, and adopted precocious son are incredibly sweet. I particularly loved that the MIL is genuinely a good human being.
Spoiler

Even during their most difficult times she treats the MC like her own daughter and never tries to take advantage of her. When she realizes the MC is better at handling some situations than her, she is more than happy to take a step back and let MC take charge of their family affairs. She is protective of the MC because she cares for her but also sees her as an equal who deserves respect which is just so refreshing to see when so many of these types of novel like to demonize the MIL character. I wish we had more decent MIL characters in literature because it's so much nicer seeing women supporting other women rather than tearing them down for the sake of men.

[collapse]
I also liked seeing the family-like relationships the MC formed with the other side characters too like her apprentice, neighbours, friends, employees, and etc and the few unexpected redemption arcs for some minor characters.

Overall, although this romcom was light on the romance, it was a fun and satisfying read that left a warm and fuzzy feeling in my heart. <<less

It’s a great story if you like « FL getting rich in ancient China » settings. The pace is slow but not uneventful. The romance is quite slow as well and to be honest not very fluffy. The focus of the story is on the FL adjusting in her new environment while finding ways to survive. I love how there are more positive characters then villains in the story. Of course there are bad people but the good people stand out more in the novel.

Finally finished reading~

A very good and simple slice of life story with an ancient chinese setting.

Spoiler

I admire the author for putting in some suspense and "potential-dramatic" plots and characters, and then tossed them to the side, forgotten and occasionally mentioned.

[collapse]

Romance is quite smooth sailing and natural. As if you expect this is how it is, no melodrama at all (which is how I like it).

And I really like how harmonious the families are. All in all, a worth-binge reading^^

Edited: I can't edit the stars 😭

It's definitely 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This one is so good!! The character developments happening throughout the story? *Chef's kiss* Even the mature and smart characters get the chance to learn from their mistakes. Characters change, yes, even the bad guys. The most fleshed out character in the story imo is Gu Ye, our little prince. The romance did not happen until maybe the second half of the story. It was so slow-paced too and not even the main driving force of the plot. It's the familial ties of the characters that makes this a... more>> very warm read. The side stories are a little disappointing though and there's one character who I feel is redundant and unnecessary (see spoiler).

Spoiler

There's a reborn person who has an instinctive fear about Gu Ye. I don't see how her role truly affected the plot and the other characters. She was an unnecessary addition to the story. Even the times when she appeared felt like an afterthought of the author.

Alright read if you want to turn your brain off and read a slice-of-life. MC is quite likeable and so is MC's son and mother-in-law. Father-in-law has 0 aura points which I'm assuming is where the ML inherited his negative rizz from bc he's just so boring. And not in the stereotypical "domineering CEO" boring way... ML is just plain+zero-personality+unseasoned chicken+basic and the romance is severally lacking in fluff... this dog food... is stale.

Aside from the boring ML+lack of fluff I will say its satisfying seeing the MC slowly grow... more>> her business and succeed! Love me a business oriented queen!

Spoiler

Will say tho that the ML suggesting divorce first thing after reuniting with her made me wanna cough out blood. The actual first time they met (altho they didnt know each other's identity) had so much potential! I was really looking forward to the romance and ML just let me down!! I wish the MC actually made him squirm and struggle at least a little before giving in... she's too nice!!+will say that this novel has like two too many women vying for ML and he never really puts them in their place he just sort of ignored it???? lol MC does all the work which just makes him even more of a dissapointment in my eyes.

[collapse]

I stopped reading at around the 350ish mark. Honestly my eyes kept glazing over characters and I couldn't remember who was who lol + all that food p*rn just felt kind of unnecessary :///. I just feel like this novel could have been waaay shorter. <<less

I came for romance and got other things instead.

This story is not big on romance. Both leads only met halfway through the story. It is instead a story of growth and building a business, with a little mix of parenting and those are the true charms of this story.

I really enjoyed reading this novel, no unnecessary family drama except for the first few chapters, no annoying love rivals and headless villains but it was exciting to the end. What I loved most in the novel was the relationship between the characters. My favs were the mother-in-law and the son.

As one reviewer said the MC Gu yin is an ordinary person who's talented in cooking. She isn’t a peerless genius who countless people admire and could make great changes. However due to Gu yin the lives of the people... more>> around her changed drastically.
Spoiler

The ml's family and Gu ye obviously, her staff at the restaurant, the Xu family, the Ge couple and the imperial family.

[collapse]

I really liked that the author didn't cut off mc's past acquaintances but instead included them in the journey. I like the ML as well. He was supportive and most importantly had some personality.

I would have loved it more if there were some more extras to see how that Feng family ended and maybe an update on the future. Nonetheless it was a really satisfying read. The Wordrain translations did a really amazing job and I was very lucky that it was completely translated.

I highly recommend this novel for anyone who loves a witty business minded FL with a doting family and smooth sailing journey. <<less

Easy read and just enough drama to make it entertaining and keep your attention.

Now a little rant

The issue I have with most « historical » Chinese novels I read from recent years as the setting and storyline are historical but the dialogues, writing and certain actions are "modern". I would understand if the transmigrated character (s) use a more "modern" type of speech or behaviour but to have the characters that were already in the ancient era say and do things you'll hear in sitcoms or hallmark movies kills the... more>> reading experience. I don't know if it's deliberate on the author's part or translation was done to make it that way.

The author has great writing skills and that's not where my issue lies. The speech doesn't match the era and the characters. It's in little details but they add up as the story evolves and it becomes more apparent towards the last 100 or so chapters. Apart from that this was a story I would have taken much pleasure in reading otherwise as I love the "getting rich in the ancient era" trope. <<less

i liked it. The romance is not much there. Both ML and FL have like zero character development. The ones with the most changes are mrs wang and gu ye. Both of their relationship with the FL is precious. The reason for this high rating is exactly this relationship. Fl's circumstances changed but she personally didn't have any change. ML didn't even appear until after the halfway through. It is very slice of life and there is absolutely zero tension and zero face slapping. Nevertheless it was a good read.

Rating 3.7/5

This is a good read but can be boring in few parts. Of course this is a slice of life but there are elements which could have been fleshed out more but yeah... nevermind. The MC life was too smooth not that I complain. It was little boring in first half of the story like nearly 57 long chapters all that happened was MC and MIL going to new place start own business, make their own group and teach (?) the sucmbag family a lesson that's all. Most of... more>> the content was about food (for someone who has never seen or eaten any Chinese dishes this part was very boring and brain consuming. I skipped most of it.)

I felt a little thrill when ML made an entry on 58th chapter. Thought it was going to enter into political drama later which it did (just a little). Probably since I read other engaging political drama felt this one little bland, so I dropped it at chapter 90.

Character were pretty good but not very eye catching or where one can get emotionally invested (Gu Ye is an exception but he was almost omnipotent). ML is basically for decoration and a celebrity compared to few other character his screen time is very less. <<less

This story is a bit of a slow burn but it's fairly decent. That is, once you ignore the ending, and the ages along with how certain characters act, it's fairly decent.

The MC is Gu Yin, a woman who transmigrated into a woman who had the same name as her and gained an instant family in the form of a mother-in-law and brother-in-law. From the beginning, she believed her husband and father-in-law to be deceased and set about trying to improve the lives of her new family. Initially, she did... more>> this out of respect for the host she took over but then she quickly became attached to her new family. Loyal and intelligent, Gu Yin quickly made a name for herself as a cook and business owner.

The ML is Wu Qingyi, the "deceased" husband. In reality, he and his father were mistakenly reported as dead along with all of the men conscripted from their village but had ended up as part of the rebel forces. A bit romantically dense, he has trouble connecting with the MC at first but his loyalty and kindness are fairly clear. He's a non-entity for the first half (or so) of the story but his past with the host was that they had spent some years together as Gu Yin had been purchased as a child bride for him. When he shows up, he immediately offers to divorce the MC until he realizes their other connection.

Spoiler

That connection being they had encountered each other while the MC was a captive cook of the former Emperor. She had deliberately disguised herself by using ashes to darken her face and wore clothing too big so that none of the former Emperor's men (or the Emperor) would make a move on her.

The ML had arrived as a way to infiltrate the Emperor's men to try and assassinate him. He pretended to be deaf and mute while working his way towards his goal. Unfortunately, he almost got caught the first time but was saved by hiding in the MC's bed. She immediately lied to also further his alibi. The pair began to develop mutual feelings after that.

They would spend an undetermined amount of time stuck with the former Emperor and his soldiers (I believe the novel said months but time is really wibbly wobbly in this story) before getting free and developed mutual feelings for one another. Unfortunately, it still took a lot of time for them to progress.

[collapse]

The story is fairly slow burn for the most part. However, some things move ridiculously fast. Problems get solved relatively quickly and it feels like the MC has the luck of all the protagonists in every C Novel. It is either her being really clever or she knew someone who could solve the problem.

Spoiler

Example is when she wanted to make iced drinks during summer. She hadn't stored up any ice during winter and it was too expensive to ship it in. But, it just so happens that she knew someone who had a cellar full of ice.

Or when she wanted to send a ship to get peppers so she asked the ML to request the Emperor's reward be a ship. Instead, he gives her a shipping guild. She also gains a pepper farm later in the story because the ML wins a polo match.

[collapse]

The family dynamic in the story is rather entertaining as she does end up with an adopted son which leads to misunderstandings with her "deceased" husband for all of about five seconds. He adjusted to it extremely well and had no problem with being "Uncle" to his wife's son. Actually, everyone on the MC's side adjusts to everything incredibly quickly. Her Mother-in-law didn't really question how the MC went from timid to quick-witted, just putting it down to the sickness she had. The husband doesn't even question it, just views it as a result of the years they have been apart.

Then there is the intelligence of the adopted son and the brother-in-law. The BiL could memorize and recite what people told him when he was four. The adopted son, while incapable of studying, quickly learned martial arts and was business minded at the same age. It's clearly written to help the story advance but the two are pretty freakish in intelligence. As long as you ignore how young they are, it works out okay.

I was also a bit disappointed in the reunion scene. As it featured in the description/synopsis above, I expected it to be this slightly big affair but it happens so quickly that I felt a bit of a disconnect. Especially since I had been waiting on this for nearly the first half of the book. It's really a "oh... that's it?" moment before they move on to the capital. The MC also wraps up her business super fast (leaving the store/restaurant to her apprentices) and it only gets brought up again when the Chef from there visits the capital nearly a year later, only to be forgotten once more until the very end of the story.

And the end. Oh boy. That was probably the most lackluster of endings I have ever read. The ending is incredibly sudden and it just felt like there was supposed to be more happening but we just get a final little clip of their life as the MC attempts to adjust to no longer being a busy person.

Spoiler

It literally ends on her daughter going to school in the Palace, her adopted son off to deal with some issue as the Crown Prince, her main business not requiring her to work there and apparently nothing else at home. This "emptiness" results in the ML taking her for a trip outside the capital to the town where she made her first restaurant. She gets busy there and then her daughter and adopted son arrive with one of their servants. And that's it.

[collapse]

In addition to how sudden it was, we do not get satisfactory ends to some of the other plot lines. Honestly, it feels like the author forgot about most of them and just wanted to finish the story.

Spoiler

For example Feng Yuan, Mother Qin, and that whole family. We don't see how the family was affected by the manipulation of the MC's adopted son. We just have the MC explaining to her son that he has to be careful with how he manipulates people because being able to do that kind of thing when he's not even seven is a bad thing and could possibly lead him to becoming twisted. There was so much potential here but it gets forgotten. Especially with Feng Yuan's concubine claiming that his legal wife caused her to miscarry but that gets glossed over.

Branching off from Feng Yuan's family, there is also his former wife who was kidnapped as a child. The MC manages to help her find her family and they all end up working for her in the capital. Yet... they never do anything about the cousin/nephew who went to jail for a short time for trying to intimidate the MC and her mother-in-law. This guy was from a family that put the title of family heir on him from the beginning, yet they never found it strange when his aunt and uncle sold the stall in one town and went to the capital.

The surviving competing restaurant in the first town doesn't ever really try to compete with them again before they go to the capital.

Same with the one in the capital, it's clearly losing money but it gets glossed over.

The marriage of one side character and the budding romance between two others is just left to fade out over the last few chapters with no resolution.

The guy she ends up gaining when she gets the pepper field. He wants to plant new crops and the like but he is never written about again after the MC meets him.

I'm sure there are others but I completely forgot.

[collapse]

Then there is the random regressor. She starts out with a manipulative plan but it ends up being moot by the end. She did not seem to serve any real purpose in the story as her role could have been easily taken over by any number of characters without the "I remember my first life so I'll be manipulative and win in this one" mentality that she portrayed. She seemed like something that was added just to pad out the length of the story.

Spoiler

She had medical skills and was taking care of the ML's father who had a stroke. In the previous life, she ended up in love with the ML. When she reached the end of her life in that timeline, he told her that he did not love her. So when she regressed, she decided she was going to marry his father and force him to call her mother (I... don't even understand that thought process, just saying).

Instead, everything falls apart because the ML's mentor reveals that her fate is being forced down by a noble person whom they all assume to be the MC (turns out that it's the adopted son leeching off her luck). The family cluelessly does everything in their power to help her recover but she ends up trying to destroy the relationship between the adopted son and his friend. Eventually, she realizes that she needs to do good deeds in order to stay alive (first time I've seen a regression with karma) but she still fails at that at the end.

She only does one major manipulation against the family before trying to go with the envoys to another kingdom. Only to get caught by the adopted son. He gets her to reveal everything about the other life so he informs the Emperor who decides that she is to be executed on the spot. She becomes a withered dead thing before the guards get to her.

[collapse]

Bad points aside, I enjoyed most of the story but I did find myself skipping the descriptions of cooking explanations. Simply because some of it was at odd times in the story when it should have been focusing on the event where the food was being made. Also, there were occasions where it felt like the reader was being told how something was made instead of showing us the MC making it.

I would still recommend this but just be prepared for the ending. It's like the sudden stop after falling off a cliff. <<less

What I like most about this novel is that the transmigrated MC has realistic modern knowledge. She was a cook and a restaurant owner in her past life, so she developed towards that direction. She does not somehow know how to mix concrete. She does not somehow know how to build certain modern technology to contribute to the emperor. She does not somehow know how to create her own skincare and make a business out of it. You get the gist. I like slice-of-life stories but it really gets old... more>> when the protagonist just seems to know everything.

Even though MC struggled in the beginning, she is very lucky with the family that she found herself in. In the beginning, my favorite relationship is with MC and her MIL. Later on, I liked the relationship MC has with her son more. The relationship she has with her family is very wholesome.

The romance is actually my least favorite thing in this novel. It's not bad, but I'm just more interested in how MC and her son developed. I find myself getting impatient when I read the romance parts haha <<less

not bad. Its quite slow & predictable.

The Story was about transmigrated fl, with -> poor->turn chef->do business->get successful->get a husband->give childbirth->happy ending.

while the ML was her Adopted Son, ALSO 'over used plots', with his suppose -> future villain character->was pickup by FL since small kid->carefully taken care & educated by FL ->turn out he was a high birth/nobel-> back to his family -> become a good crownprince -> take care his adopt family- happy ever after..........

I think it’s a sweet story so far. Overall things are mellow and the plot moves slowly. I’ve been reading on mtl and the translation is a bit rough to read tho. I stopped at c81 once I realized I was skimming the past few chapters. I’m going to take a break from it.

4.1 Stars

Date Read: 4/7/2024

Personal Enjoyment: 4/5

... more>> I enjoyed it. A little bit more before the capital because the scope was smaller but the capital arcs went better than all other poor-to-rich transmigration stories I’ve read. This is because of this story’s strength, the varied, lovable and genuine people. They are mostly good people and have a do-good type of outlook. So the vibe of this story is heartwarming and entertaining. So the capital kept the same focus and the MC didn't go crazy rich and fight everyone haha.

Short Summary: A usual poor-to-rich transmigration story. But the vibe is uplifting and the fights aren't really mean and petty faceslapping. Lots of cooking and descriptions of delicious food. It tapered off more towards the end.

Plot: 4.3/5

Surprisingly good for this type of story. There was the normal poor-to-rich progression of selling food as the method. This part is quite good. Lots of detail with the numbers and money. I liked it a lot.

Then, there are all these small little twists to the typical plot like how the MC drove up sales which wasn't the typical hunger marketing haha. And all kinds of side plots near the first half that had important foreshadowing for the capital. Quite entertaining.

I also loved the heartwarming twists those side plots provided the opportunity for. It gave lots of chances for nice and warm scenes and familial feelings. Some of the antagonists got redemption arcs too.

And there were even some action scenes in the middle for a bit of spice haha. But it wasn't too heart-pounding. They provided a nice change of pace and for romance to take seed. And for some minor antagonists to show their not antagonistic side haha.

However, a couple of the plotlines I felt could have been utilised more like the reborn person and the resolution of some of the antagonists at the capital. On one hand, there was an ending but I feel like it could have ended stronger like the noble rivals and the concubine.

And another thing that trailed off a bit was the original character motivation of the MC. She was the heir of a porridge shop from her first lifetime so she planned to do so this time too. And she mentioned her dream of wanting to make branches of her restaurant which she had a strong focus on catering to middle-income people. But her branch in the capital didn't have the same focus as the “base” restaurant in the village. Her 3rd and 5th additions to her capital branch weren't that related to food even. I can't see what her connecting overarching theme was. And after that, her specialty which was porridge wasn't touched upon anymore in the capital.

Writing/Translation: 3.6/5

The translation I read is from Wordrain. It was a bit sub-par but it was edited MTL. Just a few points better than the MTL and the MTL is very readable already. The errors were wrong pronouns and names but it was easy enough to ignore and to understand the gist when the errors happened.

Just FYI, got wrong chapter order for C172 and C173 of the TL. Should be the other way around. Same with C231 and C232.

Pacing: 4/5

It was okay for most of it. The poor-to-rich progression was quite good for this type of story. I've read a couple of stories that were better but also a lot which were far worse. The decision to go to the capital was a bit jarring but not unexpected either. It did make sense. And the plots that happened there continued to be entertaining as well which surprised me.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 4/5

A surprisingly varied amount with a rural setting, mountainside, capital city with operas, houses and the palace. And lots of plots utilised those places as well. Otherwise, it has the usual world-building for this type of setting. It has a rebellion arc too but most of the time it happens off-screen.

Characters: 4.9/5

The best part! The characters are all very lovable. All vibrant with their own endearing idiosyncrasies. Especially in the village arcs! I love all the characters in the MC’s family. They all care for each other and are quite humorous!

Romance: 3.9/5

The romance was okay. It's pretty low-key and only focused on near the end. I'm not easy to convince for romance and this was tolerable for me because the ML wasn't overbearing or the typical strong and amazing at all things type. Though this did have a bit of the usual, have s*x until the girl is exhausted trope at the end when they finally get together but meh. I skimmed most of those parts. If you love romance, this doesn't really focus on that a lot.

It was such a fun read.

The author's writing was engaging and the MC and her family were endearing.

I also appreciate the deviation in the usual evil mother in law character. Instead, she consistently supported the MC and it felt natural since the MC was really hardworking, loving, and dedicated as well.

Lastly, there was no OP character in this novel and that's what made it more interesting. Their struggles and accomplishments felt more real.

I enjoyed this story and binged it in 2-3 days. As I mentioned in my other reviews, I discovered that I love rags to riches stories based on hard work and strategies. I think it started with The Landowner's Wife... and then there were a few that involved food/restaurants.

Gu Yin and Mrs. Wang, the mother-in-law have one of the best relationships which is refreshing.

One of my favorite characters is Gu Ye and the author's humor:

Spoiler

He is the "noble" that suppresses the doctor, Ms. Shen's fate. However, the family didn't know at the time and in order to help the Ms. Shen avoid illness, they chose him as the representative to visit her daily (to ensure she is taking her medicine?). Of course, they couldn't understand why that although they were staying away from her, she didn't get better. As she is a reborn character, she knows Gu Ye's real identity and is absolutely fearful of this little cute radish.

Song Shiliu is a minor character but I find her hilarious.

The imperial family has a good relationship and there isn't any sort of back-stabbing/jealous and harem battles as there is only one concubine.

It's good that issues are resolved fairly quickly and villains are dealt with in a timely manner. Hate things dragging out for 100 chapters. <<less
