Spoiler

This is review is purely based on the editor/translator's style and I'm giving it 3 stars even though it looks pretty interesting (from chapter 3)

Nice translation, no big flaws

Ian/Edward/Felix/Eredith are names appearing, so it seems like western naming will be used

Since everything is styled as western medieval fantasy it feels extremely weird and breaks my immersion in the story when "Oppa" and "Ajumma/Noona" is used by medieval peasants

Big brother / Sister / Auntie etc. would give a much better reading experience

Edit at chapter 24:

It looks very good, easily a 4.5/5 so far

but again there is some small problems with Korean sneaking in where it shouldn't be

At the age of 17, he asks an innkeeper for "gukbap" which I guess is Korean stew? the problem here is that "Noona" is apparently normally used, but other Korean words aren't which further clashes with world building... (again this is an editor/translator problem that appears due to the previous korean)

He's lived 17 years in another world without speaking Korean and with nothing to write down or reminisce about his old life, so the fact that he asks for Korean stew in a random inn is truly strange (original author problem)

[collapse]

review at chapter 81

this is a 3-3.5 star novel

Spoiler

I'll start with the biggest problem first

Random facts and references in the writing

As an example, when describing a personality type... instead of writing "Introvert" the author decided to write the scientific name of a personality analysis

Thinking up clickbait youtube titles for a situation... after living 18 years in a medieval world

Comparing something happening to a play made by Faker in LoL, and other random games

It seriously breaks immersion whenever that happens

---

The magic system is very interesting but not executed well

I was here for a fantasy wizard, then suddenly we are introduced to a faith full of idiots and a goddess who seems to simp for the MC letting him perform miracles

MC gets a magic sword that seems to completely ignore the previously established magic system of communicating with the mysteries/spirits

Of course MC has a system that'll let him instantly increase his mastery in a field of magic / grow closer to the mysteries, yet he seems to decide he's strong enough after using it twice, and doesn't use it to get stronger even though he's been in several deadly situations

With the way magic/mystery works simply having MC be liked by certain mysteries would be better as the system adds nothing to the story other than breaking immersion

---

The MC lives in his own imaginary world, and still feels like a fresh reincarnator who hasn't accepted that the world is different from his home and still keeps his previous habits of communication with others

after 18? years living in another world... 10 of those as a medieval peasant who doesn't get enough to eat... yet he still acts like he's in modern korea

He seems to have a split personality as he decides to follow the worlds tradition in one chapter even if he doesn't like it much, it's just very convenient for him to do so

A few chapters later he gets angry and refuses that same tradition for no reason without any buildup

The chapter after that he goes back to following the tradition and doesn't care at all

---

On top of that he's a dense idiot concerning romance, on his way to getting a harem of the Japanese kind where nothing ever actually happens... I can't be sure at C81 of course, but I really doubt he'll get anywhere romantically with the vibe of the story

pretty bland cliche stuff

Quite a fun read. Don't know why is has such a low rating.

The way magic works here is very unique. Instead of just casting spells, everything in the world and all forces, etc are considered "Mysteries". Sort of like living things. For darkness magic, you might go into a cave and try to hear/sense it. And then try to communicate with it and ask it to do something you want. Sometimes it might not agree, and you can offer a gift through a magic circle to convince it, etc. Same... more>> goes for fire, air, water, etc. Magical creatures like drakes and dragons are themselves consjdered "Mysteries" and can be communicated with through a special "Summoning" branch. Then there is space/time among others.

Quite fun. <<less

One of the best pure adventure stories I have read. A fascinating magic system and the story mainly focuses on discovering the "mysteries" of magic with various conflicts and adventures along the way. The setting of medieval fantasy actually matters here which is nice to see.

While the main character is nothing special he serves the narrative enough and grows on you. Typical dense protag but it's fine since it's not harem or romance focused. The other characters are fine too nothing special but enough to be engaging

There is a status... more>> window too but rarely focuses on it and does not affect the story or become overpowered which is refreshing.

Overall a good read. Read it if you like the world and magic system <<less

Oh man, I don't know how to put it. I wanted to like it so much, but I can't quite stick with with.

The start was great. A frequently used but strong premise, compelling characters, a decent introduction to the magic of the world. But, slowly everything becomes more and more underwhelming.

MC is a science grad. I'd figure he'd create some interesting spells, view existing spells from different views. I won't say it isn't totally there, but it's more on the fly. He gets in a pickle and the improvised (lamely... more>> imo) to get out it. He doesn't do any of applying scientific principles, doesn't conduct in-depth research besides being initiated into different magic. He wanders around seeking 'mysteries'. No kidding, just teach a kid the magic language, with no skills and throw him into the world. That seems to be the gist of how wizards conduct. If so, I'm not surprised how few there are given they must've already gone 6 foot under.

I'm barely scratching the surface with my rants. The MC is a pushover (kinda). You won't see it be totally blatant, but he is unquestionably being led around the nose by others. He had a single destination in mind when he starts his journey and he's basically doing side quests all around. Normally I wouldn't dislike that given how adventuring is supposed to be the main focus of such stories. But, given how the MC conducts himself, it is somewhat pathetic.

I don't wanna spoil anything which is why I'm skirting around the edges here, but to be more forthright, so far two main female characters were introduced so far. A noble girl and a female swordswoman. And, both are so annoying in their own ways. And, the MC totally panders to them.

Not gonna go more into it. But, the strong start of the story felt like it deceived me given how disappointed I feel right now.

So, yeah. Try it, maybe you'll like it. But, I can't stand such insufferable characters, a somewhat spineless MC, very barebones delving into the magic of the world, lack of direction of story, abrupt introduction of strong bonds with random characters that weren't there before and so on. <<less

It's been quite literally average, though I'm not sure if it's due to the translation or the author's writing.

The idea on how the elements work is definitely unique and deserves credit-- but the writing style negates both emotion and immersion by making you read it mechanically.

A lot of opportunities missed by not building up the world. Many more missed by not building up the MC.

... more>> They could have seriously made this a 4 star novel if they took some time to think about the emotion of the character.

It's still early, but I'm not expecting much. <<less

3 stars is the best I can do. If you read any of the other 3 star reviews, they all say similar things.

Lack of enjoyable characters

Lack of plot direction

... more>> And an interesting magic system that is horribly undeveloped.

Here's an immediate example that sets the tone for the whole book in my opinion.

The MC is poor and barely has food, he and his little sister spend their days Foraging for any food cause the family is to poor to support everyone.

A wizard shows up while the two are Foraging and claims the MC as a desciple due to a prophecy.

Within the span of like 5 pages, the wizard buys the MC out of serfdom and they leave.

The author spent more time explaining the relationship between sister and brother, then they did about the MC being bought out of serfdom. And yet the little sister isnt mentioned once after the wizard shows up. No goodbyes, no worry for his 8 yr old sister once he leaves, nothing, just drops the character all together.

That was a warning for the rest of the book, tons of useless surface level exposition and no characters developed enough to care about.

The point of reading a novel is for entertainment.

Once it stops being enjoyable, it's best for you to stop reading.

And about 200 chapters in, I've reached that point.

... more>> The gist of this novel is that in this fantasy world, "wizards" are pretty much the top of the food chain since the physical counterpart, that so many other novels have, do not exist in this world.

So, essentially, the world is mainly divided into people who can "use" magic and regular people who are easily bamboozled, terrified, or amazed of those who can use magic.

"Use" is in quotations because the way "magic" works in this setting is that "wizards" learn a whole new language, of magic words, in order to communicate with the sentient elements of the universe, aka "mysteries, " in order to build up rapport with said mysteries so that the wizards can call upon them for favors.

We're talking about people who have to spend years, or even decades, building up relations with mysteries they have an affinity towards, not even counting the numerous years spent on learning the magic language consisting of thousands of characters.

And now enter the protagonist, an isekai MC who obtains a system that allows him to just learn things as skills, which also includes levels towards the mysteries themselves. As you can probably guess, this makes him a "genius" that can easily use any and all mysteries because his system allows him to just hear the mysteries whenever and wherever.

That, in and of itself, is not that big of an issue, but over the course of the 200~ chapters that I read, it felt like he was taking magic for granted because of how easy it was for him to hear the voices that others would have to spend months or years of immersing themselves into just to hear a whisper.

Throughout his journey, he, in my opinion, became increasingly dismissive of the "magic" of magic and the breaking point for me was when he became borderline abusive by gaslighting the plant mysteries into getting themselves killed to feed people and treating a one-of-a-kind ancient relic, with spirits inside of it, like a toy.

Overall, it feels like the mysteries are somewhat chained to Ian because his system allows him to always be able to hear their voices even if they don't like him.

I don't know, man. I just can't deal with it anymore and I didn't even get to the part where the premise of his wizard journey was to travel for three years before meeting up with his master again, but the very first girl he befriends on his solo journey essentially ties him down to a fiefdom as a home base.

There are some funny moments and some, dare I say, based concepts, but I just cannot with his attitude towards a "talent, " that pretty much any other wizard would have killed themselves for, and his attitude towards the mysteries themselves, acting in a way that it's fine to just use them as tools because he just can or to even con them into doing what he wants because he treats them like the dumb medieval people he deals with on a daily basis. <<less

I wish it was better. The magic system is very good, and the worldbuilding is significantly more down to earth than default medieval fantasy, but there's a couple issues that really grate on me over and over the longer I read. As for strengths, the magic system's basis of "wizards are forgein language majors who can speak to the world itself" is very good. It would be a much better story if the main character actually bothered to like, use magic more, but whatever.

As for weaknesses? There are three massive,... more>> and I mean massive problems. The first? Sexism. The second? Almost every character is a cardboard cutout. The third? MC has a clear goal but just kinda gets sidetracked all the time for nonsensical reasons that are boring (because the characters are boring). Let me explain:

First, the author is just sexist. We've got stereotypical women throwing themselves at MC because he's powerful, which is whatever, but the flavor is decisively sexist. Female characters behavior change drastically scene by scene to further the plot, attractive women "like being stared at by h**ny men" (for the love of god tell me you've never spoken to a woman in your life HELLO??), men are repeatedly explained to "obviously want to r*pe every attractive women they see" which the author has the gall to claim is "simply human nature because older women are less fertile, " and we've got the classic "it's the woman's fault she almost got r*ped because she inconvenicenced all these male characters helping her not get r*ped." It's just plain weird and bad, and gets worse over time as more female characters (of "socially acceptable" "attractive ages") are added. This is weird because there are completely normally written mentor-archetype female characters, multiple of them, but no any girl between the ages of 15 and 30 is asking for it.

Secondarily, most characters are cardboard cutouts of a given archetype like "righteous night" or "as*hole night" or "rapey mercenary" etc etc. This is notably worse with female characters (see above) but isn't inherently a problem if the core of the story is adventure and discovering magic right? Wrong. It's fine for quite a while but gets really aggrevating when characters are being cycled constantly and it's implied we're supposed to care about them (or MC cares about them maybe?) except the only difference between Person We Care About and Person We Don't Care About is the amount of time they've spent with MC. Their personality doesn't matter. Idk

Finally, MC has a clear goal of adventuring the world to find more mysteries to talk to to learn more magic. What does he do instead? Get randomly jerked around by strangers over and over to do things he doesn't care about at all that barely benefit him. Examples include: going to meet a plant mage and getting dragged off on a monster hunting expedition instead of asking about plant magic. Initially traveling north to "meet the time-space wizards" before deciding to literally turn back around, go south to go to war instead (despite being very adamant about not wanting to do that or kill people) for a girl he hates for a theoretical reward that may or may not let him learn more magic. What does he do after that? Get dragged to go play doctor for a noble. Do you see the problem? That's right, there's not enough magic in this world supposedly full of magic! He basically learns spells and techniques whenever he wants to, but doesn't bother to study or put in effort unless he's literally about to die. Idk bro, maybe he doesn't have a personality either.

Despite these annoyances it's a pretty good read because the worldbuilding carries it so hard. It depends on what you're interested in. If you want characters or drama or real friendships, go somewhere else. If you just want a cool magic system? You've been warned. <<less

The novel itself is quite good, the pacing is at decent speed, not too fast, not too slow, just normal pace and I quite like it. I get to enjoy some of it. The MC is just kinda average one. He's not that OP either just normal wizard one but something different from him among other wizard. He just took it as an advantage.

Everything is good although there's some loop hole but I know this is just a common mistake from the author he surely get improve soon.

The downside is... more>> that there's always annoying female characters around him (except for one girl who is a black knight). They always bother him, annoy him, asking for marriage to serve her, dead weight, useless, causes trouble all the time then the MC have to deal with it. I can't deal with that sh*t. I'm sorry for the word but im quite allergic of harem genre.

Next time they should put harem, female characters, misunderstanding tag. So that to those who hate harems will also be aware of this. And he is not a low key protagonist. He slowly get famous as the chapter goes on.

I would really like to read this type of novel if it weren't for annoying female characters who keeps flocking on the MC. I would even donate some money to the translator if I have to but it keeps me getting angst because everytime I read I always get angry to those fMC. I always prioritize my mental health due to that I drop this novel. I'm really sorry. <<less

Hidden beneath a simple summary and generic title lies a rich and vibrant storyline. The pacing, characters and worldbuilding are masterfully created and is leagues ahead of today's mass-produced isekai sewage.

A simple premise but masterful execution. The magic system is very well defined and the suspension of disbelief is very well crafted. Will recommend 9.75/10

If the author could stop mentioning Korea every 55 lines or so, this would be much more immersive. Character has existed in this 'world' after reincarnating for almost 2 decades, yet apparently spends all his time thinking about Korea? Truly bizzare and immersion breaking to be honest.

Also, a great idea for the mysteries, interesting concept! But author constantly kills the reader's interest by making the MC dismissive and uninterested in any of the magic!? I truly cannot fathom what author was trying to do. Hopefully in their next work they... more>> get some audience interaction/ concept readers to help them explore their characters a little better.

Truly disappointing. It seems before the author wrote chapter 41 he had a blast smashing his head against a wall, else I can't explain such a s*upid development.

The story starts great with the protagonist exploring the mysteries of magic, but then the protagonist pretty much throws away his pursuit for some trivial matters. At chapter 41 he even s*upidly risks his life for some selfish noble who sees him as a useful tool and wants to install his niece as a puppet ruler.

It is like going to work for one... more>> week in an unfriendly workplace, where the others are either s*upid or very selfish and hostile. After your first week your boss informs you he needs to fire most of his employees. Suddenly you, the badly treated newcomer, stand up and shout "Boss, I'm honored to work for you, I will work for you even if you pay me no salary!"

Even my 12 year old self would have been smarter than that. Either I'm a genius and I don't know about it, or the protagonist is very s*upid. Although the author is definitely smarter than a 12 year old (I hope), this is a classic example of "You can't write a character smarter than yourself" and "A smart person can act s*upid, but a s*upid person can't act smart (convincingly) ". <<less

one of the best novels I have ever read. This novel embodies the term comedy really well, the amount of banter between the characters and the occasional laugh is one of the good points for the novel, it doesn't become too overwhelming and out of place which is what you would expect from a fantasy novel. The MC isn't too overpowered as his power is a growth type ability (aka system) which would increase as the story progresses. The romance isn't too explicit, it's been over 100 chapters and all... more>> he ever did was a

Not bad. It's nicely written. I'm dropping it because of the romantic subplot and the fact the MC is supposed to be adventuring but like is getting caught up in ridiculous politics games with nobles.

Literally every single female he has met has expressed interest in him and there have only been a group of cleric-like older men as his travel companions (there are mercenaries but they are background/cannon fodder characters).

He's SUPPOSED to be going north to see space time wizards, meet a (probably) ice drake, and find an ice Phoenix... more>> but noooo girls and their side quests. He finishes one and another one just f*cking pops outta nowhere...

As most the reviewers had said before, the strong point is the magic system. Unique enough to be core of the story, but the MC himself takes much away from the story. His inner dialogue is constant complaints on the strangeness of the new world, though to his credit the author tries to establish why as well. It’s always why would they do this or that and he makes his own rationale for it after complaining. It consistently comes up which makes it annoying while simultaneously making it feel like... more>> he hasn’t adjusted in this world yet despite living in it for so long. It makes sense because he was sheltered but it isn’t presented well. While I understand the occasional nostalgia for modern food but his insistent gripe on basic food palate of the fantasy world is tedious, his master would’ve prepared him with spices considering he was fine wit her cooking for so long, if not he should’ve asked for it as an adult in a teenager’s body. It’s one of the troupes for reincarnations that often comes up, reborn as a new person with adult memories, but for some reason reverted into an actual child’s mindset with no explanation.

Overall it is a good novel, but the lack of any important events and the only mystery of magic to keep you interested, it is a slice of life, adventure of a new magic user in a unfamiliar world situation. It might be your cup of tea but I find it hard to like/dislike it as 60 chapters in it feels stagnant. <<less

The magic system is very thought out, based on communication with concepts called mysteries that include things like the elements (earth, wind, water, fire), darkness and light, and also includes concepts such as transmutation, death, destruction, time, and space. There are alternate approaches to magic in some cultures as well.

The characters are likeable enough, with extra effort put into the likability of the heroines.

It does repeat itself a lot, especially when describing the medieval-ness of everything.

One substantial criticism of the MC is that for all his viewpoints on Confucianism and... more>> filial piety, he sure doesn't think twice about his family after leaving home to become a wizard.

It's interesting, though I find the most interesting parts being the advancement of the MC's magic and his communication with mysteries in general, and that does not come nearly enough. <<less

i mean if you are fan of fantasy and adventure, then this would be a good read I would imagine... but thats basically all the good thing about this novel in my opinion... the protagonist is basically the naive protagonist you will see in most isekai.... and the protagonist is the driving force of the story and the author wants you to understand him better... but he is so not interesting lmao... In so many Asian webnovels it seems like they portray class based societies (outside of historical ones) in a very melodramatic way. Nobles are either evil or good. They treat commoners as insects to be trampled or as subjects they should bend over backwards to protect as part of their duty as nobles. While I'm sure there are those extremes it would make more sense if the vast majority landed somewhere in the middle of said extremes. More importantly commoners (and serfs) would generally fear those in classes above them. Not simply wariness, respect, or minding their manors. Because they believe in stereotypes like nobles are evil despots. Or in the case of this story that wizards are crazy eccentrics. In both cases stemming from their understandable ignorance (no education). This story illustrates this well. Regardless of the reality of the upper classes, the lower class fear them in large part due to stereotypes.

The slight twist to the magic system is nice.

I saw one comment that there wasn't enough world building... ehhh. I mean. Yeah, there are no large infodumps, but it is slowly fleshing things out. I always think it's silly when any rando on the street can act as an exposition pez dispenser to tell the MC about the world. In a feudal society without education or even long range communication who is going to be knowledgeable enough? Even Noble's knowledge will be focused on their domain and local politics. Only those in center powerbase of a kingdom or those at the borders might have a larger view of the world. Wizards? They're chasing the truth of magic. They only do/learn the bare minimum in order to chase that (well the scholars like MC's master).

The difference is the world building isn't being spoonfed. Mostly showing for once. They've already setup that the MC is later going to join one of the wizard council meetings so we'll see more of the wizard society.

Saw a complaint that the MC used a Korean word for a dish. I don't think it's weird. If you miss your hometown/cuisine you might unconsciously use the name. The innkeeper was confused of course. Which is honestly a nice touch. Too often webnovels hand wave language issues with skills/powers/systems. Or they simply ignore it and for some reason people in the other world just understand because reasons.

MC too timid or doesn't spend time training magic ahead of time? The story time skipped over his 6-7 years of training. It's not obvious at first but it seems his master did give him some advice beyond just teaching him the magic language. Nature/Mysteries/Spirits seem to have their own will, moods, and temper. There aren't predetermined spell incantations. A wizard in this setting not only has to build a rapport with each type of mystery, they seem to have to handle matters on a case by case basis. During an escape scene the MC easily raises the ground with earth magic to trip someone, but later the Earth mystery is in a bad mood and doesn't listen when he asks for a favor. This implies that even the elemental mysteries are individuals like the spirits in other works. The point is that there doesn't seem to be a fast way to train this sort of thing. In fact for most Wizards it takes years of training and it's already established that most wizards focus on a specialty. The MC is the weird one for being able to pick things up so quickly (in part due to his system). So it doesn't seem that weird for his master to send him out on a rite of passage to learn on his own. I mean this is the woman that threw him into a campfire so he could learn fire magic.

Sexism, Honestly there is a band of mercs that act like bandits... which I think the story even mentions aren't very different in practice. They both kill for a living. Only difference being one does 'honest' work and the other steals. So yeah they think with their third leg and they target a woman traveling alone. Which is strange in this setting. Only made worse because the other woman in the party is plying her trade. Its shity, and I don't think the story does anything to glorify this behavior (from what I've seen). I mean most of them get eaten by a monster before they could do anything? Instant karma? The thing about women over 30 I think was in reference to the MC's master? She freaks out about the MC's sister calling her an aunt? And I think it would be a real concern in a medieval setting without doctors or healthcare? And the girl who liked h**ny stares was a prostitute wanting to marry up in life so she didn't have to sell herself? You could call it gold digging but in this setting its more about the way she chose to survive? I think this story focuses more on class and power. It's relatively low fantasy. Not everyone is a wizard or a knight. Ironically I believe the woman the mercs were targeting was a noble traveling incognito for reasons. But that means little without personal ability or escorts.

It started out really promising with an interesting magic system, combined with a science/engineer student, so I hoped he will combine the the two and make some amazing things with it.... well that was my first disappointment. He doesn't experiment or try to improve actively at all sadly. There are 1-2 occasions where he is forced to invent something new otherwise he would die, but even those are rather mediocore inventions.

Also the fact that he went on a big adventure without knowing any kind of decent self defense (be it... more>> magic or at least a dagger) is beyond me. And as said before it's never adressed as a problem so he never even tries to improve this.

Speaking of characters, the MC is too passive for my taste, he supposed to go north to learn new magic yet he is constantly swept away to participate in the disputes of local nobles, which are mostly boring because of the uninteresting characters involved. There are two potenial harem members as of now, one is 3/4 of the time immature, childish and annoying but for some reason 2 sentences later suddenly sophisticated and smart as if she had 2 personalities in 1 body. The other one is kind of interesting but has too little screen time and instead of her we have a ton of info and interactions with generic side characters who we will never ever see again after 2-3 chapters (I actually started skipping the conversations with them, because there add absolutely nothing to the story).

Fights are also boring because of the passive MC, he basically just uses one magic, which shrouds an area in darkness and thats it and knowing how much potential he has its such a waste. On the other hand I kind of start to doubt that this magic system could even be good, because to use magic they have to persuade the wind, earth... etc (which are sentient beings, like spirits) to do what they want and when two wizards are trying to convinvce the same spirit to do what they want it's just degradec the fights to childish bickerings with words and it very lame.

To summarize it up, it started as a promising adventure with interesting magic system but it slowed down heavily to a kind of slice of life style, which genre I really dislike, so if you like drama, action and dislike slice of life then you should probably avoid it. <<less

I like it, the harem thing is kind of less impactful or annoying for the tone of the story... its there. Not like overly salted food though... its kinda just a seasoning.

Its not my taste, but its not so overwhelming that I find it repugnant.

That said, the rest of it... good world building, fun progression of events. Neat stuff happens, and its generally a good ride.

Not exactly a thoughtful thinker of a novel, but there's some religious elements that I think are brave considering Korea's very atheist population... it does... more>> that well in my mind, without making it feel like a real bullet point moral finger wagging kind of thing either way.

The only message it really gives is the utility of religion in a hopeless lawless time. It doesn't condone much more then that, and that's fairly alright by me. <<less
