Ruan Xi was reading a novel with a laid-back female protagonist at her own leisure. When she woke up again, she had transmigrated into the book and became the female supporting character with a good life, Ruan Xi, of whom the female protagonist envied.

In the story, the character Ruan Xi was the replacement for the engagement that had fallen through because her transmigrated, legitimate older sister had abandoned her fiancé from a rich family. Later, Ruan Xi was pampered to the heavens by her husband and became the winner in life as an imperially mandated first-rank wife to an official.

Ruan Xi, who had transmigrated over, watched as her transmigrated legitimate older sister prepared for that marriage happily. Similarly, her legitimate mother had also decided on another marriage agreement for her.

Ruan Xi: “……”

Years later, after the sister is suffering from her husband’s family, she came to Ruan Xi to see her struggling with misery. When she stood at the door of Ruan Xi’s house, she watched the cold and violent man in her previous life hold her in the palm of his hand with all kinds of wealth and love.

The story starts with a slow climb for the first dozen chapters, the midsection was idyllic, sweet, and comedic with a hectic and rushed followed ending.
Giving it a 4 star considering the setup was basic, transmigration + rebirth unexplained and random. The main characters are your typical Mr. And Mrs. Universe and kept themselves celibate, intentionally or not, until getting together.

Regardless, it still makes a very good read, relaxed and laid-back. The main contributing factor has to be the calm as a lake's mentality of MC, which I hugely appreciate. From personal preferences speaking, I do dislike main characters that fall into traps in oblivious manners and become agitated from the smallest set-off.
She worked hard to integrate and adjust herself into an unfamiliar world and put in her best effort to make her future comfortable.

Hugely appreciate the ML as well for his gentlemanly conduct towards MC.
He was never unbridled or tried to step on her bottom line by taking liberties and the like. The romance was natural, gradual, and touching. Another big plus to their relationship is how MC never went overly bashful by acting tsundere (the annoying way). Though embarrassed, she embraced the intimacy they shared.
More to their relationship:
Spoiler

They got married sooner than expected due to circumstances in the family and had s*xual interc**rse, multiple times, that led to having a child, but I suppose that's the realistic part of the story.
ML did plan on taking her hand in marriage soon after she had her coming of age ceremony and moving away from the capital and settling down in a quiet place. But due to ML's grandmother being close to death's door, the ML's family settled all the descendants of age's marriages in a hurry on the fact that bringing positive vibes to dispel the bad and their children would've had to wait on for 3 years as a mourning period. What's not mentioned is that marriage arrangements can possibly change during that period, which I've seen happen in other instances in other novels.

The wedding had to be consumed due to ceremonial traditions and one would consider the madam unfavoured if the master did NOT bed her (plus they needed to show to ML's parents the proof of their consummation in form of a white handkerchief stained with bits of her virg*n blood). The issue of her rushing in having a child at the young age of 15-16 was also due to tradition, mainly because the illegitimate branch was also about to have a child and ancient folks placed great importance on the legitimate branch having a son first.

[collapse]

Additionally to the positives, the story placed importance on the OG plotline, the side characters, and the villain of the story. Though you might feel like you completely understand her (villain) at the end but also not really. She's canonically described to be as resilient as a c*ckroach so brace yourselves for that.
OG Plotline rant and side character notes:
Spoiler

The OG plotline doesn't seem fitting for a novel at all, not from an FL's perspective nor from an ML's perspective. FL is bound to be a concubine of his whilst he's got a prospering harem despite heavily favoring FL. After ML became the emperor, FL remained as a concubine/noble consort. I do not consider the story to be targeted originally towards a male audience either, since this ML perishes very early on (35-40?) whilst FL's child becomes the next emperor and she the empress dowager. FL doesn't possess any hacks/golden fingers, merely a meek and mellow disposition and an unending love for the gourmet.
Unlike her, the side character in the OG novel who becomes later on a villain in the following was packed with knowledge and mysterious abilities. Any mysterious illness is no match for her and she brought along various progressive inventions and ideas. Using the knowledge, she progressively stepped ahead with great fanfare and flaunt but didn't even intersect with the main OG couple.
The laid-back side character (og Ruan Xi) and her overly glamorous and prosperous life had no impact on the OG story either, and seeing a couple thriving better than the main couple is definitely unheard of.
I'm truly baffled by the point of the OG story and this character's existence. She takes things for granted and treats everybody as s*upid despite not even knowing it's a novel universe. She's heavily afflicted with the main character syndrome also despite knowing she met a gruesome miserable end while others thrived.
Many would probably not be satisfied with her ending in the rebirth version, but I like that it's not overly bloody and vengeful. Harmful cannon fodders will be removed and those who can be kept in check, like the villain who's a rabid dog in a cage, can be ignored.

I’m surprised this book has such a high rating. I’m dropping after 16 chapters because it really drags. So many unnecessary paragraphs of information that I just don’t care about. The main character has also only met the male lead once in these 16 chapters. It wouldn’t be a big deal, but there is nothing interesting happening. The main character hasn’t even left the house or talked to anyone outside her few family members. She is apparently a god tier actress, as the author makes sure to tell you how... more>> everytime she writes, talks, or does literally anything she is flawlessly playing the character of the young miss she transmigrated into. There’s only been one scheme against her so far, but what do you know, she transmigrated with an ability that let her avoid it. Maybe the book picks up later on, but my god you would think at least one exciting event would have happened in 16 chapters!! <<less

This is a very very slice of life novel. The MC sails through her life without much fluctuation. The drama is all courtesy of the absurd san niang. Worth a read for when you need a change of pace.

Spoiler

I thought there were too many transmigrations, rebirths and re-rebirths. Also there weren't any situations where the MC had to actually *do* something lol.. It was all taken care of by her doting ML. The author really meant the "laid-back" in the title

I have to mention the translation was amazing! Really appreciated how they added in tid-bits of info, explanations and pictures in every chapter. <<less

The drama starts with FL's 3rd sister and the drama ends with the FL's 3rd sister. Honestly, this novel would probably end in less than 50 chapters if only this sister have the tiniest bit of rationality and intelligence. Despite the numerous "cheats" she have, she just kept on sabotaging herself. FL and ML is decent, though not really different from other novels. FL really fits the description in the title. It's a nice read, not bad.

i kinda love and hate this novel.. But I still enjoyed it. Villain girl is like a c*ckroach who keeps on pitting herself but manages to survive due to her gold fingers. I empathize with MC whenever she hear the news about the pits that the villain keeps on digging..

The story of Ruan Xi and Wen Tingzhou is a beautifully crafted historical romance, with a hint of fantastical elements. Such as the idea of transmigrators, like Ruan San Ning and Mu Qing Ci. The former being the protagonist's sister and the latter being the original female lead in "a romance novel." That is the setting: Ruan Xi found herself transmigrated into a romance novel. However, none of the aforementioned characters plan on allowing the original plot to go as planned—whether by chance or intention.

That being said, the most "off-the-rails"... more>> character is unfortunately Ruan San Ning, who turns into almost a sub-villain character. It's her third life and you can practically see her mental collapse throughout the entirety of the novel. This is why we should only have one life, more than that would cause a person to go insane.

Mu Qing Ci does have an original or previous life "as detailed by the events in the original novel." However, to her, this is her first transmigration (aka second life) and she has no memory of the novel's events.

And for Ruan Xi, this could also be considered her "second life" since she transmigrated to the novel world, but not really. I won't divulge more on that but here. Check the spoiler below.

Ruan San Ning is the perfect foil to Ruan xi's calm, collected personality. The author makes us painfully aware of that fact. To be honest I would have liked to see Ruan (San) Ning have more depth to her character, but alas, it was not to be. On the other hand, Mu Qing Ci is quite passive and only reacts to the situation she is in. This in itself, left her life in shambles and the predestined "novel life" she was supposed to have, never happened.

Wen Tingzhou is your typical cold, strong, and handsome male lead. But he's very subtle and never flashy. I really like that about his character. He is the silent but sturdy type and this works well with Ruan Xi. That is why the romance is the best part of this novel. You can really see the passion blossom between the two leads as they grow older.

Now some spoilers

Spoiler

The author did devote the final chapter of the novel to rewrite Mu Qing Ci in a "third" rebirth (a third timeline of the story) and she purposely never met with the tornado that is Ruan Ning. So, in her third life everything went back on track to how it's supposed to be. And it still kept the timeline for Ruan Xi too, so no changes between her and Wen Tingzhou. It makes me wonder why the author even bothered to write the interaction between Ruan Ning and Mu Qing Ci. Honestly it was not even comedic, just tragic. The poor girl was so screwed over by Ruan Ning that it was just pitiful.

On the other side, it turns out that Ruan Xi was always the original Ruan Xi. I'm not sure, mainly because it was kind of unclear to me, but I think she had been reborn in another life, leaving her body behind in the first timeline (the novel timeline) then returned to her original body as Ruan Xi in the second timeline (present story). So Ruan Xi lived in the novel timeline for a while but then got sick (?) and left to the modern world, only to return to a completely different timeline back in her original body. She felt extremely saddened that in the original novel timeline Wen Tingzhou was alone til death since their promise between each other was never fulfilled. Their promise to get married when they grew up, he always held that in his heart and stayed alone in the end. While Ruan Xi had left her body to the modern world, someone else entered her body and got married to Qi Yue An. That person also actually came back to this second timeline as someone named Yang and was actually able to marry Qi Yue An again (so they both got a happy ending). Funny enough it was a good choice that Qi Yue An broke the engagement between himself and Ruan Ning.

As for Ruan (San) Ning, I swear she basically lives four times. First in her original world. Second as the transmigrator in the novel timeline, ending in a tragic death. Then, third, she rebirths in the second timeline and lives out her days abandoned in the palace after the emperor dies. She was married to him yet again. However, there's still the fourth time when Mu Qing Ci rebirths into the second timeline—which basically creates a third timeline by her deviation to not get involved with Ruan Ning. All in all, Ruan Ning never lives happily and it was pretty much self-inflicted.

[collapse]

Now that that is out of the way. I would like to say in conclusion I would give the world building a 5/10 because it was pretty mediocre, nothing special. The character development is a 6/10; this is because the leads had some character growth together, and so did a few side characters, but once again, nothing significant. The overall plot is a 9/10 because, frankly, it's an enjoyable and binge-able book to read. I had a lot of fun reading the story and romance. Everybody loves reading a good romance between a trustworthy, loyal man and a beautiful, intelligent woman. So overall I'd like to say that the book is a 3.5, but I'll bump it up to a 4 on here. <<less

It's what it says on the tin! I like these kinds of laid-back novels where shenanigans happen, but you don't have to stress out about anything bad actually happening. The villains bring ruin on themselves due to their own s*upidity, etc. There are some small schemes at first, but the MC's golden finger gets practically no use.

Yeah, the MC is pointlessly praised and the ML is doting for no reason, but books like that are pretty good.

This is such a great no- nonsense book. Nothing feels too boring or as if something has been dragged out unnecessarily.

This is a slice of life but it also has a lot of drama. Only the relationship between ML and FL does not get affected otherwise there is a lot of good plot.

I loved how we got to know about the original MC and original FL, so glad they had a happy life.

It's good. The main couple and the whole story's purpose I feel like was just to stuff our hearts with cotton candy, and it excelled in doing so. I don't have much to write on or say though. The novel did manage to keep my interests, and it ended at the right time as well.

i just have a personal vendetta against these underage marriages. I understand it was ancient times and it was acceptable back then, but nothing about transmigrators and transmigration is realistic, so they could have allowed the FL to find love and marry at an older age. It's just weird to me that a person above the age of 18 can fall in love with a 14 year old.

I got to chapter 49 before dropping.

I think the story is well written and the main character was likable (as well as the ML, I liked that he wasn't the standard cold or domineering type).

On the other hand, it feels like the story is more sentere around the villain Sister and all her s*upid action. It is basically all about her setting herself up for failure.

It felt a bit weird that both MC and the antagonist were Transmigrator's (instead of just reincarnators). While some things make sense, I still feel... more>> that the antagonist seems a bit too s*upid and reccless to be both a reincarnators and a previous modern person while the MC seems a bit too much like a traditional person to be a modern person (she seems more like a reincarnators tbh). She is more careful and composed because she is smart and has the memories of the original body, but with the Male Lead she really seems like a bashful traditional young miss. Blushing at the smallest action. Usually I forget that she is actually a transmigrated modern person and I felt it would be more natural if she was just reborn (but I also get that thos wouldn't work with the plot if she was actually the original with memories of her last life with the other guy).

In general it was an good story that alternates between the villain making a fool out of herself and the MC and ML having sweet moment, but it also feels a bit bland with not much happening outside of that. <<less

The amazingly idiotic Third Sister who transmigrated and was reborn several times and never learned from any of her past lives.

She was the most entertaining, funnily enough. The FL was a bit boring and dry (as was the ML) and it was more fun to watch all the wacky situations the 3rd Sister got herself into.

The Romance

Spoiler

Was okay. The couple was basically smooth sailing the whole way and all the tension was gone after their relationship was solidified since nothing was able to get in their way and everything happened as they wished.

Not a complaint really just FYI

[collapse]

I think this is similar to Greetings, Ninth Uncle in that the couple is similar in their dynamics BUT no one is beating the couple in GNU in terms of chemistry, cleverness, or how entertaining and fun it is to read about them.

I think my only complaint is that I wish the FL was a bit more proactive like the FL from GNU (I love that story so much so excuse me lol). I always got the sense that she was detached from the story and the characters in it for some reason I can't articulate. <<less

It's confusing but I like the multiple transmigration and reborn concept

The author loves the FL too much it's funny lol. Loving the translation! Thank you, translators!

Spoiler

Modern and ancient ruan xi shared similar name and eight characters.

Spoiler
  1. I guess modern ruanxi got "transmigrated" to 12yo ancient ruanxi for a while. They said ancient rx "lost her memories after visiting the temple".
  2. There are 3 lifetimes in this story. 1st the novel, 2nd ruan ning reborn - ruan xi transmigration, and 3rd novel FL (mqc) reborn into 2nd lifetime. I'm not sure whether ruan ning also has 2nd lifetime memories during the 3rd. The author made her too s*upid, I feel bad. This story took place in 2nd lifetime.
  3. Ruan ning reborn causing ancient rx to die and modern rx's soul moved in. (Modern rx died in her sleep?)
  4. Ancient rx's soul moved in to yang xiaojie body (qya lover this time), so ancient rx is always ends up happily with qya.
  5. Modern rx fate is with wtz (ml), but since she wasn't in the original novel, wtz ended up alone.
[collapse]

Had transmigration then reborn ruanning didn't do anything in the 2nd lifetime, wtz would still ended up alone. So thank you, ruan ning

This story is... mid. It’s okay. Nothing excellent. Nothing to write home about. Classic transmigration with a ML that finds the MC “interesting”. We’ve got comically s*upid villains but the main couple never faced any genuine strife. It’s like they’re just an audience to watch everyone else’s foolishness. So yeah, mid. I’d give it a 3.5/4 but since novelupdates only works in whole numbers, I decided to go with 3.

Spoiler

one reviewer complained that the step mother/legal wife’s beef with the MC doesn’t make sense but it does? And I don’t know how someone can not see that?? We must not be reading the same story bc ?? Anyway, it does make sense. The whole point is that she wants to hoard all the resources for herself and her children. MC gets in the way of that. Especially bc she is fairly competent and is smart enough to hide her talents. She’s a threat to what should be the status quo.

another reviewer was complaining that the transmigration is never addressed. And like, , , it’s not supposed to. When reading fiction there is a term called “suspension of belief” wherein the readers are able to set aside their reality (and the rules of their reality) to immerse themselves in this fictional world. In this case, we are to believe that these characters transmigrated. Don’t ask how or why. Just believe. The characters won’t ask why or how either. The point is that it happened.

and lastly, someone else complained that Ruan Niang is comically and ridiculously, s*upidly evil. She’s transmigrated and then reborn but still hasn’t learned. They point this out as a fault against the author but like, , , that’s the point. The point is that she’s s*upidly, incomprehensibly villainous. As readers we have to ask ourselves what the author is trying to get across—what message or theme they’re trying to get across. And the message of this story, I feel, is to reject modernity and embrace tradition. The other two transmigrated characters assimilate. They conform. They are lauded as the “good” ones who get good endings.

Ruan Niang is supposed to be s*upid and ridiculous. The point is for us to sit and laugh at her. She is supposed to be an example of what not to do/be.

[collapse]

Basically, there is some analysis that we, as readers, have to do. This story isn’t super deep and philosophical but if you’re refusing to read with even the barest of analytical lenses then you’re going to run into trouble. I certainly don’t think it takes an insane amount of brain power to read this story—in fact it’s quite a bit on the boring side—but you have to ask yourself some questions. What era is this in? What is the author trying to get across? How much am I willing to suspend my belief in order to enjoy this story. <<less

This is a good novel and seems to have all the elements of a great story, but it's also almost painful to read. I don't know if, as the story progresses, the author will change the tone and focus on other stuff- but so far, all it says is:

--> Family is bad, third sister is s*upid and does not learn from her mistakes, legitimate mother is bad and dumb, only MC is great and knows how to play her cards.

Geez author, I GET IT. No need to repeat the same... more>> pattern every damn chapter.

A little more story and less "Third sister tries to change the past using knowledge of events of the past, that's so dumb, it won't work, she is so bad (and dumb) ".

I'm not necessarily against female villains being portrayed as such and being unfavored in the narrative, but this one... is so crude, so much blatant disdain, the MC halo is that stepping stone sister of hers (that was also the supporting female lead used as stepping stone for the original MC on the novel). <<less

I found this novel quite heart-warming and touching. The comedy part comes from the nuisance of the antagonist (Ruan Ning), which was refreshing for me. FL was level-headed throughout the story. Adding to the fact that there's a mix of transmigrators, reincarnator, reborn... I quite enjoyed it! I definitely recommend this light-hearted novel!

Enjoyable story with an interesting plot. MC, Ruan Xi, transmigrates into a passerby in a novel about two transmigrators. In the original novel, the novel's female protagonist, Mu Qing Ci, is a laidback transmigrator. She notices that MC's older sister, Ruan Ning, is also a transmigrator. Due to RN's actions, MQC decides to live a low key and quiet life.

This story starts with RN being reborn and trying to prevent the events from her previous life from occurring.

Spoiler

These are real spoilers that are revealed at the end of the novel...

- MC did not transmigrate. She actually reincarnated with memories of her previous life. However, due to unknown reasons, she experienced memory loss... sometimes of her current life and sometimes of her past life. That's why she mistakenly believed that she transmigrated.

- At the age of 12, MC rescued ML, Wen Ting Zhou. At the time ML had promised to devote his life to her and to propose marriage once she came of age.

- RN's ex-fiancé, Qi Yue An, does find happiness. He gets engaged to a lady who is similar to MC. However, it states that this lady was reborn also but into a different body. Her soul was in MC's body in the first life and was the one married to QYA. This makes me confused since the obvious question is... so where was MC's soul in the first life? 🤷‍♀️

6.8/10 kind of underwhelming? I mean it's nice to see FL and ML has a smooth relationship unlike the usual dog sh*t show in other novel but at the same time, I feel like each character doesn't get their in-depth development? the back stories of characters is so vague. Even the ending, where previously life FL is actually not this life FL is so confusing.. idk if the author trying to leave people imagining or guessing. A really good read. All the canon fodders are literally on their last braincell which I personally like cuz I know the things they do will prolly be low impact on our main couple. I usually dislike ancient chinese palace novels because of all the annoying drama and the whole seeking power thing so this was quite a refreshing read.
