It was a useless ability, right till the very end. That’s what Shion thought as he was dying. Among all the tr*sh, it was the tr*shiest that could only record.

Even when the Libra family was taking his life, his ability, ‘Notepad’, could only record.

But then, with his return, the amplification of the Notepad occurred. Not only recording and storing, but also recalling memories.

All the conditions were prepared.

“My future dream is to be a guardian knight of Libra.”

Now, Shion is about to record their downfall from the closest place to his enemies.

Very well written with very likable characters. Slow paced but you hardly feel it when you read. Each chapter leaves you demanding for more. One of the heroins has a hateble personality/attitude but you hardly harbor hate for her as a reader. Each character has his/her own conviction and story and each one is given time to develop as an individual.

Yes the action isn’t the strongest point of the novel, with it often lacking some depth or being short lasting. But everything else is amazing. In some of the Author's other works at time it felt like there was too much happening too quickly, here the slow pace helps the novel, allowing the author to develop multiple plot points without the story being too convoluted. Also the development of the relationships between character and slow romance has been great, with it not feeling rushed. So far it’s been a great... more>> novel that has realistic development of relationships between characters and at times it can make you feel emotional. I can only hope it doesn’t have a bad ending like the Author’s previous works. <<less

Should you read this. Yes if you have nothing else to read.

What this novel does good. Drama. Especially between the females characters and protagonist.

What it does terrible at. Villian. Their isn't a good enemy in the story.

Plot is everywhere and confusing. If someone told me to describe the arc of this story I really can't. I typically measure it by how close the female leads gets to the protagonist.

Reads this if you like romatic drama not for the battle scene. This would make a good slice of life actually

The Author has credibility. 'The novels extra', 'the villain wants to live' and 'monster wants to level up' are his previous works.

This one is the culmination of his previous works, the only thing that might be head dizzying is the speed at which new concepts are introduced. It goes from medieval to futuristic settings quickly, new sides of characters are introduced in very blunt "boulder thrown on your head" methods.

you would never guess in a million years that a certain character is essentially tony stark, it's just dropped on you.

But aside from that, this novel shares the peak of the novel space with the hundreds of other masterpieces that have come out over the last few decades.

The main character is self serving but is kind when you think he should be, and to me that's my favorite type of character. (First place goes to the guy who is kind indiscriminately).

If you have taste you'll enjoy this. <<less

Right; It is evident how much this author loves to draw inspiration from other works (Breaking bad and cancer, for example). It's amazing that he does this, especially if the target media is really good, but Jee Gab Song should also try to achieve the same quality as these. Study for this. And, although his novels are very interesting in a wide range of ways, they still lack substance and narrative imbalance. Let's look at an example!

Spoiler

At one point, the protagonist and one of the heroines are thrown into a time loop world. They develop their own relationship, there's emotion, catharsis, etc., it's excellent. However, after a few chapters, the protagonist falling in love and not wanting to forget the protagonist, she simply gives up remembering and joins him in oblivion. What a waste! Why make her forget? What is the use of all this if there will be no applicability to the unfolding of the drama? Make her remember! Make her a fanatic about the protagonist and let everyone question themselves! These imbalances are necessary because they serve as a convergence for new conflicts, character arcs and could even have been used as leverage for the entry of a second act! Do like in hunter x hunter (one of its extremely obvious inspirations, vide Gon's personality conversion) and suddenly change the character's personality! You always do this with situations and scenes, why not with personalities, which is what would make everything extremely more interesting and multiply the number of conflicting moments naturally?

[collapse]

Many of the characters are stereotypes and not very individual. Nobles and students follow stereotypes of the harsh and prejudiced Elite. The intrigues seem like a facade, especially when they involve the Libra family. The characters demonstrate who they are only when they interact with the protagonist. If the Libra family is built to be distant and mysterious from the beginning, this is a mistake! Make them really scary through intrigue and conflicts that are above the protagonist. Develop real factions, not just facades that don't say much.

Real world building is extremely important for this type of narrative, and should affect the characters themselves. It is not a solo and introspective character arc, but rather a story actively oriented towards the external world.

Spoiler

Example: in Hunter x Hunter, regarding character arcs, there is the arc of Kurapika, Killua, Gon, the Chimera Ants, Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe (the last two are not as developed as the Arc). In this work, only the protagonist, the future evil heroine and the Libra family (and the last two are only developed with the presence of the protagonist).

If you're already familiar with the author's other novels and enjoyed them, you're likely to experience similar enjoyment in this one as well. While it starts a bit slowly, it gradually improves, and I hold high hopes for its potential. Additionally, the translation quality is improving, and it seems that the translator is also revising older chapters.

The translation is okay.

I’m not sure what I expected when I picked this novel to read, but it is okay. Maybe I’m looking for something more thrilling not as relaxed as this novel.

characters: (Feel like the author could use the characters more and show their personalities more other than just talking about their backstory and other infos)

... more>> The characters don’t make me feel connected. They’re very 2D. I feel like they’re there just to fill the plot, no chemistry.

Plot:

Somehow despite being a useless terminally ill patient in his last life, he has various connections and everyone is connected to each other? It’s confusing and makes less sense than a cliché K-Drama.

Overall It’s okay to read for passing time, but it gets boring soon enough. <<less

This is by the same author as "The Novel's Extra", which is very apparent within about 3 chapters and only becomes increasingly more so as the story goes on.

Almost every character/trope is directly lifted from that book to this one. This means if you liked that book, you'll probably like this one. If you didn't like it, you definitely won't like this.

For what it's worth, I personally like both of them (and think this one is probably slightly better so far).

However, they share some of the same annoying weaknesses. Starting... more>> with the over-emphasis on

"everyone hates the main character for no reason" for the first 100 chapters or so. The completely random overt hostility gets a little old at a certain point, especially when it's really obvious how these same relationships will turn around eventually.

[collapse]

The author also gets sidetracked with absolutely random and asinine plots
Spoiler

video game world, what the hell? Why? Time loop? Wtf?

[collapse]

The power scaling doesn't really make any sense, and the main character can basically just pull rabbits out of his hat and do anything with his ridiculous overpoweredness. It doesn't really bother me in particular but I can see why it would others.

However, with these weaknesses comes strengths as well. The overall story is engaging and you have relationships that change over time as the main character wins people over, which is fun. It's also generally well written most of the time. The translation is solid.

Despite the weaknesses, I'd say relative to the average on this site this is deserving of 5 stars. <<less

If you are used to the pacing of typical light novels/web novels, this one will feel slow paced or not enough progress toward story. The author takes too much time with establishing the characters, the world, the conflicts, even daily works (cutting firewood). But the catharsis from conflict resolution feels too tiny or delayed.

People usually treat these novels like eating junk food: quick, easy and gratifying, but this one is being prepared like full course meal. Already chapter 37 and it felt like nothing really progressed due to too much... more>> focus on setups and details. It also seems to avoid empowering MC early. This might be appealing to some readers who are tired of OP MC but due to being established as very weak (sickly) MC, sometime when he accomplished something, it felt like power levels are not clearly defined.

But if you like slow paced story, hate OP MC and have good patience, you might enjoy reading this. <<less

This novel is garbage. Its sore attempt at cultivation novel but failure in any imaginative format. Making up average "young master"ish characters. He makes women in this novel so hateful that it like an attempt at creating vengeful incels.

MC is just garbage. Which is ironic because thats what everyone thinks of him, and author somehow reciprocated that feeling so well to the readers as well. Props for that I guess.

The primary reason I dont like this novel is because I know these women will end up as his love interests.... more>> I just dont like that. Its like "oh she killed your mother, father, sccared you, bullied you your entire life but hey at least you will get to fk her I guess"

Too much drama per letter in this novel. If you think at some moment that finally MC achieved something good and is not so doomed as in his previous life, know that author has fooled you and there will be another disaster or drama plot twist just in the next chapter (or even in the next paragraph lol).

It has an excellent premise and the translation is very fast. Like the author's other works, there is a tendency towards the tragic but without inhumanity. I'm in the early chapters and I'm waiting to see if this sapling is a deceptive bush or a lush birch tree.

"I do not like fantasy, because all problems can be solved at any time by magic!" - average person you recommend a fantasy novel for the first time

The MC of the story get nearly all the attention, as he tries so solve one problem after the other in his quest for vengeance. However the way he does this is very unsatisfying to me, because he constantly makes up new powers.

No foreshadowing or logical explanation simply I should be able to do that, let's try and I can.

This novel is good at the start, its interesting at the start...

But, the slow paced story can be annoying, I know there are many things happens at once that is why the screen time are going here and there, and some characters only having a bit of screen time, especially Libra, surprisingly the main target of MC have really little screen time beside the early chapters (even until ch 173 that I read while writing this review), no info whatsoever, no screen time for the characters from Libra that already... more>> introduced, but too much time in academy and also its events, that at some point feels repetitive instead of progression of story, and for an "ACTION" novel it really lack depths for the fighting act (imo), only short battles sometimes and most in the middle are planning and dialogs during the supposedly "ACTION" screen time. <<less
