It's basically a slice-of-life, romance novel in a XianXia setting. The plot isn't very deep, and the characters are pretty shallow. The narrative style feels pretty weak as well. Overall, it's just an average story, but at least it isn't bad.

3/5 Stars.

It's always hard to write reviews on my favorite reads. But I'll try to gather my thoughts as much as possible.

It took me four days to finish this novel. It was long as hell. And I couldn't put it down. It was so addicting that I had to force myself to eat and sleep on time and even then I only got 3-4 hours of sleep each day. Thank God, it's finished now.

I enjoyed myself immensely during my read. And after finishing this novel, there was a moment of grief... more>> because I wouldn't able to experience this novel for the first time anymore.

The title can be kind of misleading. But trust me, this novel is sooo worth it.

This is a typical chinese xianxia cultivation novel with a MMC who levels up step by step and then stands on the top of the world. But there are some differences which are the most attractive points of this novel in my opinion,

● The biggest selling point for this novel may be the fact that it has a main female love interest for the ML. Most of the time, in these kind of cultivation novels, either the male lead has no love interest or he has a harem of three thousand beauties, he is either celibate or lustful.

But our ML, Jiang Lan, is completely different in this aspect. He has an arranged fiance and falls in love with her later. There is never the issue of infidelity either. Though the romance is slow burn as fvck, the chemistry and bond between the leads is palpable.

● The Male leads in cultivation novels are often arrogant and OP. Jiang Lan is neither. He is cautious practically throughout the whole novel. Though there are some small face-slapping incidents for our readers' enjoyment here and there, Jiang Lan remained humble and careful throughout. He is the epitome of zen mindset. I liked this a lot.

● Except the shinning main character, the other characters become straight cannon fodders whose existence is like ants in front of the "almighty" MC.

However, we see so many 3D side characters here with their own quirks.

▪︎ Eighth Prince, Ao Man, was my favorite. He was the sunshine golden retriever. He really isn't suitable for giving relationship advice🤣🤣🤣

▪︎ Speaking of which, the alcoholic Ao Ye and the pixiu are the best frenemies.

▪︎ Lu Jian is truly a mad dog. There're also Bei Feng, Lin An, Hong Luan, Lin Siya.

▪︎ The vegetative egg and udumbara flower gave a big surprise at the finale. I mean, I was kind of expecting it, but it still caught me off-guard.

▪︎ Imperial Lord Youdu was the comedian of the bunch. My belly is still aching from his antics😆😆😆

▪︎ Qing Mu nearly made me cry. His strong faith and will were commendable.

▪︎ I kind of feel bad for Chen Xi. Her possible romance with Zhu Qing is terribly unfortunate if you think about it. Her case reminded me of another novel, The Promotional Record of the Crown Princess, iykyk.

▪︎ At least, there was some conclusion to the arc between Mo Zhendong and Miao Yue. They gave me the vibe of simple but omnipotent senior brother x scheming but persistent junior sister.

Miao Yue, herself, was kind of a queen. She slayed whenever her scenes came up.

● The climax really made me cry. The despair and emotions written in that part blew my mind. Thank God that it wasn't a tragedy. I would've chucked my phone across the room otherwise. The Epilogue left me wanting for more though.

The main characters, Jiang Lan and Ao Longyu, were constructed beautifully. Their transition from strangers to becoming the closest person to one another was an enjoyable journey. Jiang Lan is the top student expressionless nerd and Ao Longyu is the lively and innocent sunshine who always supports him. Both of them were indispensable for each other and it was evident.

Definitely going to reread this novel. It also going to be one of my favorite historical martial arts cultivation novel of all time. <<less

Overall enjoyable. Definitely not a masterpiece, but it was surprisingly good at times. The main character is incredibly overpowered for the most part and the pace of his strengthening doesn’t really make a believable world, but I enjoyed the characters and pacing. The last arc felt a little needlessly dark and kinda forced, but overall imo it’s good enough that I feel I can recommend it to fans of the genre.

Really nice. Came for the "having a girlfriend" part and wasn't disappointed. In the first half action is focus of the story and in the second half romance.

Although she can't keep up with his cultivation speed, she isn't annoying and actually of great help to him, her existence helps him im comprehending his Dao and prevents him from being a lonely hermit. I doubt he could have gone as far as he has without her.

If I were the MC I would recommend everyone to find a Dao companion (lover/marriage partner).... more>> Without her he would be a lonely man at the peak of the world at the end of the novel, but now he is happy man with a lovely wife.

Indeed, dragon (monster) girls are the best!

The story doesn't follow the clichees, no arrogant young masters, though a bit of face slapping every 100 chapters. More face slapping if you include the times the MC punches a bloody hole in the faces of his opponents. The MC has characters depth and a unique character. His girlfriend seems shallow at first, but she too has great character depth. All major characters have a certain character depth and many experience great development.

I really recommend this novel. It has both pretty unique and enjoyable combat and romance scenes.

I just didn't like the ending too much. In my opinion the author has failed in writing a grand finale and I just skimmed through the finale, because the author failed at making it interesting and the conclusion of the story was also somewhat disappointing. All 540 other chapters 5 stars, just this pulls it down to 4 stars. <<less

One of the rare hidden gem novel without the typical xianxia cliché BS.

The story deserves a 4 star and could have been better if it focused a bit more on world development and character interactions.

What really impressed me in this story :

1) No repetitive BS. The story was wholesome. The author wrote it with a clear goal in mind unlike other xianxia where the story keeps going forward from the smallest tr*shiest village to the Heavenly Divine city of Divine Realm. The story moves forward with only intention for word... more>> count instead of plot.

2) Clear Origin and Objective of the system.

P.S. MC turns out to be better than system. He uses system as support. He himself is extremely talented.

3) MC has a personality and doesnot suffer from DID (multiple personality Disorder). P.s: Other novels - MC is smart and scheming, few chapters later, he proves a toddler has more intelligence than him, but still author claims how intelligent and smart MC is.

3) MC is not p*ssy attracting Magnet. Yes you heard it no harem. Personally I dont hate harem but I hate harem cause it ruins the entire novel. A good written harem novel like Cultivation Online is always welcome.

4) Romance : The romance is one of the best I have ever read. The slow budding romance between MC and FL is what truly shines in this novel. Even though it was an arrange marriage, there was no marriage cancelling BS and you will forget that it was arrange marriage due to the groeing love between the two.

5) Female Lead : Is one of the best. Her personality is extremely likable.

6) Mo Zhengdong : The dude's master always supported him. Never questioned him what he hides and all. He Even sacrifices his own 1000 year old auspicious cloud for MC just bcz MC was not strong enough and it was his first time going out of the sect. A true master. 7) MC is not a scum. If he has the ability he takes responsibilty unlike some bastards who r*pes someone then marries them in the name of taking responsibilty but turns out she is one of the countless r*pe victim in the harem and is forgotten by the MC. Even if it might jeopardise his life he tries his best to repay his benefactors. He is down to Earth. Not arrogant and always pays attention to details.

After countless years finally a good novel was translated by webnovel.

P.S. Its the only novel where I spent money for advance chapters in webnovel. (I dont even use gold coin for chapters of other novels) <<less

So to start I want to put that I'm going to go into a very comprehensible summary so if your looking for a set version of a genre I'll hopefully explain it

If you want action than this novel is not for you...

Most cultivation novels while I don't know the right word for it are just meant for people to feel satisfied, the protagonist generally is average or below average (Something meant that way anyone at any position can put themselves in the shoes of the protagonist) and then... more>> the protagonist faces danger, does face slapping, gets the girls, and transcends realms because they are a "prodigy"

This book is very different, the reason I enjoy it more is because it's more realistic... The main character isn't constantly facing danger, he is a coward. This book is very slow so its not for everyone, but unlike most cultivation novels this book actually has some real world building to it and the thing that made me love this series is the way the relationship developed...

The romance
Spoiler

So the romance in this series is very slow burning, its two cultivators who don't understand love and very slowly come together and discover their love for each other. The thing I love about this romance is simply how the author developed their relationship, there was no major "They are together now" type moment when they fell in love, it was just a very gradual realization of their feelings. Especially towards the end of this series their relationship was the only reason why was able to motivate myself to keep reading

[collapse]

Response to Alex Woods review (Which touches on things like world building but is mostly just me ranting about why the review is wrong to make myself feel better)
Spoiler

So to start with this section I'm going to put his review simply that way people know what I'm talking about without looking through all the comments, the review was 1 star, 450 chapters read.

"Most average book ever. Nothing really happens and nothing is explained. There is no world building, no meaningful cahracter interactions and literally there is no plot. Also random disciples tr*sh talking behind Mc's back. Like, yeah he cannot do that, he is tr*sh.

MC comes out of training some random guys attack him for s*upidest of reasons. They are mostly claim traitors. I am surprised why not all of his clan is filled with traitors. The so called conspiracy is never explored nor are the world structure and the factions.

There was some dragon clan mentioned just to introduce the wife character. The relationship is so slow progression if you even call it that, you hardly notice is.

In summary, this is a book about nothing. No plot, no world building, no friends. Only some small interaction between MC and his engaged over 100s of chapters.

Even clinche cultivation tr*sh like martial god Asura is better cause at least there is a plot."

So first of all everything is explained, its just all explained at the end. The main characters cheat system came from the ancient emperor along with the reason why he was able to get strong so quickly. While there are plot holes with that like how the items appear, where are the stored, ect. this explanation is a lot better than what most cultivation novels do... Then, there is plot but again this is a very slow burning thread... it slowly introduces every single faction while steadily setting up the mc's relationship with his wife and building up the plot towards the end. Then he mentions traitors, but this is first of all wrong, They are spy's. This is a major difference since they are entering with the intention from the start rather than deciding upon it later, and again everything is explained towards the end. They are so many spy's because kunlun contains massive opportunities which every other clan needs, I'm going to avoid going into detail since its not relevant to my point. Then the dragon clan does have a point, luckily this is the last one so I can stop retorting everything is explained at the end. Overall your entire review just tells me your in the complete wrong genre, your looking for a typical cultivation novel and the summary of this one for some reason didn't tell you that this not that kind of novel. While I know I probably do this myself sometimes it really annoys me when people write a review like yours tr*shing on a novel making it more likely for other people to skip over it when your main grip with the novel is that its not your style.

[collapse]

My issues with the novel
Spoiler

So to start I just want to say the girl form chapter 310ish onward who's gag is to be killed right as she appears I felt was just horrible to the story. The 8th prince didn't feel like someone who would beat up a person for talking to him, and yet it kept happening with the shitty justification of "she feels like she is asking for it" which I just felt like was an unnecessary part of the book that I assume was suppose to be funny which I just disliked.

Other than that the ending was just honestly a major letdown. Everything after he became a dao immortal I just did not like, I think the author wanted to wrap up the series and started rushing it but going from a very slow burn to a sudden sprit just destroyed the flow of the series. The entire arc of him being a mortal to comprehend the mortal dao I just found to be very annoying to read though, it just felt very wrong to have the cheerful character get depressed then happy then depressed again. It also feels like it violates the main characters promise of protecting her smile. In exchange for his cultivation he let her suffer, This just felt very wrong and destroyed a major part of what made me enjoy their relationship. The entire final battle for him becoming the sage I just started skimming because it felt like everything I liked about this book went to shit. First of all the author just casually threw in the 4th mountain's poison dao immortal with no introduction (although at this point I was skimming so there might be something there) I really hated how the egg just casually became a dao immortal in a time of need, just overall there were a lot of things that I just felt ruined the entire story. I'm only removing one star for the ending since I liked how the rest of the book was executed but I really do hate it when authors rush the ending and just end up ruining an otherwise great series.

Not bad, would point a few bad points: too much unnecessary interaction with the romantic interest and too much "softly/quietly spoke." But overall a good novel, a sign-in novel that does not take unnecessary paths or overextends the history, avoiding falling into the usual, boring and s*upid plot webnovels tend to.

Also, although short, it's a slow novel.

Who would expect an egg to be the main character? Hahahahaha

I found this novel to be a relaxing, light-hearted change of pace from the usual, high-stakes, tumultuous cultivation novels with endless tournaments/mystic-realms/planet-universe-dimension hopping. Right off the bat I will cede that this novel, like most web novels, has plot holes and aspects where the writing is not quite up to snuff. What I will not do is act like novels written by mostly amateur writers and translated by mostly underpaid translators if not simply edited MTL, will ever meet the standards of a novel written by GRRM/Sanderson/Rothfuss/Robert Jordan. One of... more>> the things that irritates me endlessly while reading NU reviews is that many people expect 1.) consistency and quality from amateur writers 2.) competently translated works from either "independent" sources or Qidian/Webnovel/etc. Who are notorious for their half-assed translation efforts.

This novel is really a sweet and subtle romantic-comedy disguised as a cultivation novel. The ending of the novel cements that feeling for me.

Spoiler

Everyone is revived after the world ending cataclysm. It was never really all that central to the story and the entire cultivation plotline only served as filler for the romance between Jiang Lan and Xiao Yu and the comedy with the wholecast of characters

[collapse]

This is a novel with broad appeal in a good sense but a generic sign-in system and unimaginative combat hold it back from being a 5-star must read. <<less

A boring cultivation novel. There is no depth in the system of cultivation; little action in action scenes; no pressure from enemies or from conflict; and no meaningful character relationships.

The main character is a blank slate pretty much. His personality is alright to read of, but his interactions are boring. The character cast doesn't complement the apathy of the main character, where unique dynamics could become possible. Instead, with the horrible writing style, it's really tedious to read of any of his interactions purely on the basis that none of... more>> it really matters in the end, since the story is so shallow.

The writing style is choppy. Rarely is it ever more than a single sentence as a paragraph, and so it gets tiring to read, especially when there is a sense of 'faux romanticism' in narration.

There aren't any stakes nor is there character development. Fights are rare, which enables a slight uniqueness in the slice of life aspect, but it detracts from tension and satisfaction from conflict resolutions. And the SoL aspect itself, as it is predominant throughout the chapters so far, has greatly disappointed me. There is little to none exploration of his daily life, other than a monotone exposition of an autistic cultivator's daily chores. No friends really, coupled with an arranged marriage with two blank slate characters, where the author probably intended to depict complex characters through their interactions - yet in lacking exploration of their motives and reasoning - they had created mere clay dolls playing house, where there are no stakes, no joy, no pain, nothing at all.

There is no sense of a greater picture, other than ham-fisted attempts at some larger conflicts of organizations. There is no sense of a past. The story revolves around the present; the past doesn't matter. We do not know anything of the transmigration main character, be it the origin of his current self or that from Earth. Future-wise, there is none. The main character wants immortality, then he wants more immortality. Boring.

I don't see a reason to read any further. The story has already failed. If not from the pain-in-the-ass writing style; alas, the characters, their void of personality throughout the cast, bored me to the greatest extent. <<less

I liked this a lot. Much of it is very slow, and has quite a bit of slice-of-live periods. Those who don't enjoy such things will probably run out of patience really quickly.

Many characters are childish in their emotions, but in a cute way -- they are not making foolish decisions out of emotions; more like they are not familiar with intimacy and are slowly learning. A few are childlike on purpose; as a way to enjoy life, but are quite mature when forced to it. In fact, there are... more>> a number of relatively mature characters, even the villains are fairly rational, and nary an arrogant young master in site.

The MC is truly low-key, and he maintains that for 99% of the novel. He is a cultivation monk, and rather boring, but still likable. There is a romance in this novel, and it's glacial in its pace, but quite deliberate, and, on the whole, quite effective. MC's love interest becomes rather childish in her behavior -- but again, because she can, not because she is irrational. More playful than arrogant.

Finally, I was sorry about Yan Xiyun -- I think the author was rather abusive to that character. But on the whole, I enjoyed the novel more than most -- a decent if rushed climax; a good denounement at the end, and a set of likable characters. <<less

If I could describe this novel in one word it would be: temperament.

That word alone is half the dialogue in this novel. For whatever reason, it applies to EVERYTHING. Jesus.

If it wasn't obvious, this isn't exactly a very well written story. It's also not very rewarding. The MC is handed everything for no reason out of nowhere. This guy literally walks into a cave and is rewarded with a pill that allows him to transcend to the next stage with no hiccups or repercussions. The dude got a rare candy... more>> just for walking.

Hah, it's bare bones generic. There is nothing horrendously bad about it and very little that stands out in a good way. I guess he and his waifu (his only one) is a nice change of pace. All its worth is a time killer and a filler in between quality novels. If you're bored and want a cheap time killer, it's worth it. If you want a quality novel with cultivation, world building and plot, this isn't worth your time. <<less

I truly find it amaizing that the same novel people claim to fix the problem of extreme MC's of the other novels (hyperactive, agressive and vain in this case) can go into extremes as well, just on the other end of the spectrum. I like the idea of a calm, rational MC, who's perfectly fine being by himself and cultivating. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a novel where this is the case, becouse almost all such novels have simple cowards for MCs.

It is amuseing to see people calling the... more>> MC "stoic", like they know the meaning behind the word. Stoicizm is a filosophy, and is basically about not worrying about stuff we cant control. This is why stoic people are usually calm. Our MC, on the other hand, is a coward. A coward is "a person who is contemptibly lacking in the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things." I think it is rather fitting. I can only say this becouse the author felt the need to justify the MC's lack of adventuring, and the best he could come up with is that it is dangerous. Just take a look at this: Ch. 78. (Spoiler is nothing much, there is basically no story up till now, it is only "and then 10 years passed, MC got stronger" stuff. There are some little events, but those are not mentioned in the text below.)

Spoiler

"According to his master.

The Witchcloud Gathering seemed safe. But with so many people gathered together, would it truly be safe?

Jiang Lan didn’t believe him.

As long as it was a form of training, as long as there was competition, there would usually be some accidents.

He would definitely encounter it if he really went.

It wouldn’t be a problem if he didn’t go out."

His main reason to stay is that "something will definetly happen to him, even under the protection of immortals". You might also notice the style of writing. How could someone write like this? Almost. A. New. Frickin. Sentence. For. Every. Single. Word.

Now, for a slow-paced novel, the style of writing is incredibly important. I just could not take this, even if we ignore the sentences. And I read Winter's Tale from Mark Helprin almost every winter, and that is the epitome of a slow book. In this novel, there is nothing in the writing that gives any meaning to the "slow-paced" part. It could be written in way fewer chapters, as nothing really important happens most of the time.

Now, I would have no problem with the MC being a coward if it was acknowledged by the author, but he seems to think that his charachter is just stoic and cool. It is also funny that he want the MC to be the underdog but also be superior to others, so he regurarly speaks about the "fake" cultivation of the MC like it was the real situation. Thing like "he could be said to have cought up with his seniors, as they all are in the golden core realm, but the difference in talent will show itself as the disparity grows at the higher level" (the MC has common talent). This whole monologe is said when the MC is already a realm higher than his "seniors", pretty close to the next. Mind you, his "seniors" will take at least a hundred years to break through the golden core realm. And this kinda s*upid sh*t is everywhere.

[collapse]

In conclusion: this would be somewhat readable if you had nothing better to do, but the style of writing (perhaps the translation) makes it almost unreadable. <<less

Most excellent. It is at first encounter a sign-in novel where the protagonist takes the smart option of leveling up.

But, the level ups are not frighteningly fast. And he gets a fiancee, which starts getting him out of his shell.

Both of them are nicely characterised. So, that makes it sweet and lovely.

The translation of occassionally has pronoun-gender errors. But not entirely problematic.

A fairly solid novel that is quite similar to My Senior Brother is Too Steady with a very low key protagonist who does everything he can to minimise any danger. The ending is a bit abrupt as it does essentially involve a time skip and then an epilogue.

The translation of the title is a bit unusual as Turquoise Pond is referred to as Jade Lake in the novel and while technically correct it's like translating a Fat Cat as an Overweight Feline so at first I wasn't sure if it... more>> referred to two different places. <<less

MC is lowkey for a good majority of the plot. He gets involved at certain points so the story has something more to it. The last couple chapters, ~50 perhaps, fall a bit short but gets the job done for finishing the story in a reasonable manner. Honestly, a 3.5/5 more so than a 4. The humor was fine for a while but it's always the same couple of jokes on repeat.

This seemed to me as slightly bad/ repetitive writing of a pretty good story. Only with each repetitive action/phrase the writing gets less bad it seems and intentionally bland, almost as if it manages to blend with the mc’s personality and his world view. After finishing it i’m left slightly dazed and wondering if I’m starting to cultivate too hahhaha and understand the book’s dao and this type of writing was made intentionally so. It doesn’t give a felling of story ended and surprisingly I think I could read it... more>> a second time and comprehend more. Not a fan of the lack of story building and graphic details, it takes too long to build the plot- this takes some of my appreciation off so only 4 stars. But if we look at this book from our mc’s point of view, ‘his’ story was appropriately portrayed and the writer created a masterpiece. Really, I binge read it so maybe it made more sense for me. If I had stopped, it probably wouldn’t have made any cohesive sense, but only seemed boring. Like this it’s like is a cultivation biography.

Good job, I wish I had the patience to read it again more in depth as I feel I overlooked things by getting complacent with the book’s rhythm. Oh well, I’m not planning to cultivate the book like our diligent MC so... <<less
