He hides his trump cards well, trains himself in escape techniques, refines poisonous pills, and masters his mystical abilities. Before making any moves, he takes on an extremely steady demeanor. Yet, every move of his ends up earth-shattering. Once he is done, he will disappear without a trace.

Li Changshou originally plans to remain hidden and safe in the mountain. There, he is supposed to cultivate until he ascends to immortality. However, everything changed one year when his master seems to think that their lives are too peaceful… He takes in a junior sister…

A good and fun story with MC being super cautious and steady. And OP.

With there being the junior sister, the comedy part is well written.

The the story is great but it kind of gets stale during the end. But not that bad that you will feel frustrated. It's like the author lost battery charge with time.

For romance, if you think it's there then it's there. As his junior sister is always trying but never making any clear intentions. So it's more like flirting than romance... Till the end part of... more>> the story where the feelings build up and a harem is formed in a hurry without giving the others heroines mich time to build up their feelings. <<less

My impression after 60 chapters:

One of the best cultivation novels I've read. MC is intelligent and a clear thinker. He is super cautious, but the world really is super dangerous.

At first, you might think that the MC is basically the same as Bai Xiaochun from AWE in terms of being scared of death, but you'll quickly find out that that's not the case. Bai Xiaochun is *afraid* of death and takes impractical precautions to the point of self-harm (like wearing so many layers of clothes that he can't move which... more>> puts him in danger because of a lack of mobility), then when pushed to the brink, he becomes a give-flesh-break-bone berserker to fight for survival and completely abandons his cautiousness. Our MC, on the other hand, is not *afraid* of death at all: he's just doing his best to avoid it. He doesn't mind his caution becoming an inconvenience or an embarrassment to himself, but he'll never allow it to *harm* him or work against him. His plans and contingencies are well structured, rational, and clever.

If a normal human were acting super cautious on an island filled with dinosaurs, nobody would think it was weird because dinosaurs can kill a person as easily as breathing. In the cultivation world, his caution is seen as excessive and abnormal because it's a "society", not an island of dinosaurs, but those high-level cultivators are not only stronger than dinosaurs, they're also smarter which makes them even more dangerous. So you can't really say he's *wrong* to be so cautious, and in many ways, he sees the world more clearly than the people around him.

However, while most people might have a set of values that looks something like [Safety: 5, Convenience: 2, Enjoyment: 3], our MC's values are set at [Safety: 10, Convenience: 0, Enjoyment: 0]. That's where the distortion occurs in his personality. So considering his values, his actions are 100% correct and rational. It's just that most people couldn't live that way.

Now does that mean that our MC is heartless and selfish, only living for himself? NO! There was a good line somewhere in the story where the MC said (paraphrasing) that he would always try to avoid establishing new karma (causes and effects), but that he wouldn't run away from karma that was already established or was unavoidable. For example, he goes on a dangerous mission (after extensive preparations of course) to help his master. Similarly, since he has a junior sister, he knows he's unavoidably bound to her by karma, so if she gets in trouble that means it's his responsibility to deal with it even if it would put him in danger. He tries to educate her so that she won't end up putting his life in danger, but he would never run away from a life-threatening situation that arose because of her. It's because of things like this that he's still a relatable character even though he has some slightly distorted values.

The MC hides his strength and competency, like many other protagonists, but this is the first time I've seen an MC do it so well. He has multiple layers of facades that are known to different people/groups and he makes plans well ahead of time for the progressive unveiling of portions of his capability. He collects trump cards even when he doesn't need them so that he'll still have something left up his sleeve even if part of his trump cards are ever forced out.

The main problem (for him) is: apparently he's a disaster magnet, just like any good MC. Around chapter fifty-something, he even starts to realize this and gets worried about it. So while his overcautiousness is clearly excessive for a *normal* person, it might not actually be excessive at all for a "Main character"...

Anyway, the story is really fun to read. Whenever he carries out some of his multi-layered plans or starts going through his multiple backup plans when he's taking action, it's always really fun to read. You might think reading about an overcautious protagonist would be boring, but the MC is a badass in his own right. He'll never take large risks on purpose, but he's extremely capable when it comes down to it.

The side characters all have distinct personalities and quirks and they all stay true to their characterizations. It's highly likely that they will remain relevant to the story for a long time. Almost all annoying xianxia tropes have been avoided so far too.

Overall, this story is a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend it. <<less

This is the current number 1 novel on Qidian since Lord of the Mysteries ended earlier this year. The story is set during the ancient cultivation era (which is quite rare to see) where the celestial court has just been established and the world was still abundant of spiritual energy and resources. It is the best of times for cultivation and also the worst of times for cultivation.

The novel depicts the life of an overly cautious and calculative transmigrator as he struggles to survive during this chaotic era where ordinary... more>> immortals were considered as weaklings and golden immortals of the great firmament were as numerous as dogs. The story is heavily centered around Chinese mythology where the majority of the characters are based on known legends and myths (e.g. Pangu, Mother Nuwa, Three Pure Ones, Celestial Emperor etc.). If you have read novels like Desolate Era, Sage that Transcends Samsara, History's Strongest Senior Brother, I Shall Seal the Heavens etc. You will finally be able to learn the true origins behind the various characters, cultivation arts, locations, and spiritual treasures that gets referenced in almost every xianxia novel.

Overall, this novel provides a fun and entertaining read, and it is truly well written (both the story and the written language itself). Out of all of the Chinese novels I've read, this novel is the most beautiful in terms of a literary piece and can be considered a work of art. The author is extremely talented and actually spends the time to write his own poems (not just one but many throughout the story). From traditional hakus, nursery rhymes, to even epics on the level of Shakespeare, there's nothing that I haven't seen this author couldn't achieve. Furthermore they blended extremely well with the story, and the level of prose is on an entire different level to any other story out there. I've often seen people comment on how good Mao Ni's writing is (author of Ze Tian Ji), but this author is on a complete different level.

I would not recommend reading the translated version of this novel because it would be a complete butcher of the original writing and your reading experience wouldn't be good.

EDIT: It's been around two months since I first wrote this review. The novel has now ended. There weren't any fillers or recycled content. The author had clearly planned out the entire story well ahead. The final arc was very exciting and the story finished with a proper ending. <<less

The story is decent but the translation is abysmally bad. They can't even keep consistent gender pronouns, flipping between he/she and aunt/uncle within the same sentence while referring to the same person.

A good novel, sullied by an extremely lazy translation team that clearly used MTL, and didn't even have the courtesy to clean it up well despite being paid.

The translation consistently flips genders, gets names wrong and uses awkward wording - types of errors that are absurdly easy to avoid if an even half-competent editing job was done. By the late 300s, the MTL cleaners clearly stopped caring, and the pronouns I/we, you and he/she/they started consistently flipping around. Sentences such as 'I'm grateful you saved me' can easily be mistranslated... more>> as 'I'm grateful I saved them'. These types of errors are impossible for a translator, no matter how incompetent to make - they're clearly from MTL. In a novel which already has a complicated plotline, decoding these errors makes the entire thing exponentially more annoying to read.

Namewise, the poor junior sister in particular has been called quite the smorgasbord of names and pronouns, including Lan Ling'e, Lingle, Fairy (MTL name), Blue Fairy, he, she and they. Please note this character is fully female, not transgender. For most of the name errors, even a find/replace sweep would get rid of them all. Goes to show just how little concern the translation team gave. They truly didn't deserve the money they earned off this, ruining the great original writing of the author. <<less

The novel is about an overly paranoid transmigator from earth that might have read too many xianxia novels. He tries to survive in the cultivator world where saints rule over the world and even strong cultivators are simply chess pieces on a board. He doesn't know what overkill or overdoing things is and it makes for rather funny moments. However, he is right in doing all of these because we get to see that his enemies are simply too powerful.

The novel is rather slow but it has a lot of... more>> depth. The world building is great, similarly the side characters are well crafted.

A note about the "harem" tag, it's not really a "harem". So don't let that mislead you, but it does have romance. And it's fluffy.

I would recommend this with a 5/5 to anyone looking for a consistent, well written and in depth novel. <<less

This is a five star work. The characters aren't two dimensional cutouts as with usual wuxia. The MC is not a cold killing machine without any attributes. As in the name, he is steady. Too steady. The guy makes a backup plan for his backup plan's backup plan. The setting is ancient times, showing the mythology behind many cultivation novels. This is literally the MC transmigrating into Chinese lore.

Our MC, Li Changshou, is a person from modern Earth who transmigrated. He recognizes that these are tumultuous times, so he tries... more>> to be cautious and plan ahead. Very logical, right? Wrong. He is so cautious that even very high level figures are awed. There are many ways to mess up an overcautious protagonist. Most novels have the character be afraid of death, not knowing that they are actually ridiculously strong for their circumstances. Very few authors are able to correctly pull it off in my opinion. Seiya from Cautious Hero and BXC from AWE are examples of characters who are 'steady, ' but managed to pull it off correctly. Changshou is another example of cautious MC pulled off correctly. You are at first led to believe that he is just cautious for comedic effect, until you realize that his 'steadiness' has saved him more than once. He knows himself, and he knows his enemy, which is why he is cautious, unlike the average MC who is cautious due to misconception. He is a lovable character whose 'steadiness' is one of his charms. And unlike what you would expect, he is not afraid of death. He simply does not wish to die when it could have been prevented. Li Changshou is very wary of karma. He tries his best to sever his karma, to the level of OCD. But this just makes him all the more lovable. If he already has karma with someone, he will do everything for them. Examples of this are his master and junior sister. Really, even if you forget about the amazing plot, comedy, and side characters, this series is worth reading just for the MC.

Now side characters. A common problem with cultivation novels is characterization. The main characters have no character, with side characters being mere caricatures. This is a huge problem with many novels. This includes how arrogant young masters get mad for no reason, how women are all somehow falling for an emotionless MC, and how most stories copy the character traits of these side characters from other novels. Here? That notion is rejected. As with common sense, a person doesn't just fall in love with another person for no reason. It is a slow process. The author of this series knows that. The characters have, you know, characteristics. They aren't just paper effigies (read the novel).
Spoiler

They have reasons for falling in love with the MC, and it takes them time to realize that they are in love. You know, like actual people.

[collapse]
Even if you do not like all the characters you will at least find their interactions with the MC comical. This brings us to dialogue. The author is very good at this. The character interaction is beautifully done, taking into account both the characters and the manners that they have to show.

The plot of this novel is the Great-God Conferment Tribulation. The whole series is an allusion to Chinese Mythology. I guess you could call it a fanfic. One of the most well written fanfics ever. The character's actions do have an effect on the future, but the author makes sure to hammer in the point that an ant cannot change the trajectory of a blue whale by much. The MC cultivates to become a slightly larger ant, but that is all. To try and compare to the Dao Ancestor or the Saints would be plain s*upid.

Tl;dr: read the novel. That is all. Just read it. <<less

This novel is probably enjoyable for people who never read about a low-key, afraid-of-death MC. I myself am not one, so I find this pretty boring. The plot basically is the same as any other storyline in which MC would rather run away than fight.

It isn't wrong to be a realist, but MC attitude makes the story dull. Due to MC's passive approach, the whole story becomes more like "random unlucky encounter waiting to happen" rather than a proactive plot. This applies to all aspects, especially relationship and romance...

Spoiler

Although I read only c38, I can imagine many girls will flock to him due to (un) lucky encounter, and he'd reject them all to avoid troubles. I've read this similar plot in several other novels and I'm pretty sure where it'd be heading next. The MC would either end up with no romance for rest of story, or there'd be at least one drugged reverse-r*pe...

I give this 2, since I think it is a lay back novel, not the type that I enjoyed. <<less

It was refreshing and funny in the beginning, but as the story went on it becomes.. Boring. There's no real challenge for the MC, nothing significant ever happens. What's the use of talent if you're not going to use it? I understand the premise of the story and it's definitely something other readers would like, but it's not something that I would read past 100 chapters.

It is finally over.

It is an unusual and great story with romance, fights, cultivation, politics, philosophy, dragons, underworld, and so on, based on Chinese myths.

The protagonist is smart, world building is very detailed, philosophy is interesting.

... more>> I liked it a lot.

The only minus is translation quality, when paired with the author's eloquent logic, it is sometimes hard to understand the cause and effect.

The most interesting part for me was the point of view of Heavenly courts - beings who rule gods.

Awesome, awesome. If you can handle the translation it is a worthy read. <<less

Main Point : This novel has a fatal flaw, that, you have to read Investiture of the Gods and Journey to the West to understand its brilliance.

The story set with Li Changshou reincarnated in the world that connected with the Investiture of the Gods universe, and few thousand years before Journey to the West universe and other Chinese myth/story. (Including Water Margin)

Li Changshou (MC) later struggled with the Investiture of the Gods, with exceptional scheming abilities against every mythical creatures.

This starts as this awesome, unique cultivation novel with an unorthodox shameless MC who hides his ability, and then... some people might call it steady, others bland. After the first few exciting chapters there isn't really anything happening anymore. The author just recycles their concepts. It is a nice read, but when the first few chapters were a six, then it ends as a four. This makes me very sad, I was hoping for supreme read..

What I would have changed:

Spoiler
  • The "little sister" Lin'er should be more pro-active. She should go and cause trouble (by either playing pranks, trying to seduce the MC or having lots of fans). Then the MC comes and cleans up behind her.
  • Overall, there should be more interaction with the younger/same generation. It is only the "toxic" sister Youxai (?), and she basically has no character. From here side I expect more "justice". She should go and try to bring the MC back to the "right" path. Also her master should be more involved (maybe trying to fan the flames, or play matchmaker)
  • The elder martial aunt Jiu Jiu is not needed for the story. Yes, she brings life into the scenes, but this also narrows the action range of the little sister.
  • The involvement of the elder generation is too "cheap". There is no mention of the other peaks, there is no mention of their responsibilities, there is no mention of their disciples. It is basically a bunch of bored old men and women enjoying snacks. How can you fear them? There is no feeling of "deep waters" and as such misses lots of potential for schemes.
  • The schemes overall are pretty shallow. It always ends with the MC getting someone to swear some oath to keep it a secret. Boring.
  • The cultivation background disappears. At the beginning you have the MC trying to slow down, whereas he gets his epiphanies and is forced to break through. And suddenly this whole "plot" just disappears.
  • In conclusion, the story misses a lot of potential by not involving the "outside". Everything happens on their little peak and between the MC, the three girls and maybe his master, his uncle-master and the dragon prince. It is as if the sect does not exist.
  • Afterthought: Why are they allowed to stay on their empty peak? Wouldn't it be more interesting if they were schemed against and had to leave it, being forced to migrate to one of the established ones. Maybe there is a big competition where the MC has to fight for their honour and their peak? The setting is amazing, and it really makes me sad that the author couldn't fully establish its potential.

Almost seems like the anime Cautious Hero if you've seen it, except its all about cultivation instead of leveling.

The MC is a very cautious guy, that never risks doing anything without 99% assurance. He also always come up with contingency plans for anything he decides on doing, with many backups for his backup plan, in case his original plan fails him. Some may question why he's super cautious, but it has to do with his previous life, similar to the MC from Cautious Hero.

Spoiler

He lived a normal life on Earth, however he suddenly got a lethal disease that neither he nor his family was prepared for. He died young while suffering from the unknown. So he decided in his current life, that he would live a long and healthy life free of worries, which is why his daoist name he choose for himself "Changshou" apparently means 'Long life'

[collapse]

He therefore lives his life by trying to keep contact with others to the bare minimum. This is the to keep the cause and effect of relationships limited to prevent any potential future troubles (The less people you're involved with, the less likely you'll be involved with problems caused by relationships). Kind of like how the MCs in any other webnovel intentionally or unintentionally arouses the jealousy/anger of others causing fights and plots to happen around them. The funny thing is, that despite trying to live this way, one way or another, people end up coming to look for him, causing him to forcefully be involved with situations. So his only escape is to try and shift the problem as much as he can and minimize any negative feelings toward him.

The MC is also very OP, but declares his talent very mediocre likely due to his cautious nature. So despite having a lot of skill and items at his disposal, because of his life philosophy, he hides his true cultivation from everyone, and is viewed as a mediocre talent (when he is actually a top talent, far ahead of his peers within his generation). Talented, but not enough to stand out from within his sect.

For the most part, the story is his life as he tries to avoid involvement within the sect, other than to secretly look for way to help himself maintain a stable life, and power up. It involves cultivation cliche, but in another perspective, making it whole situation funny. So if you enjoy cultivation novels, OP MCs that hide their talents until necessary (e.g. The Lazy Swordmaster, The Strongest Dull Prince, Martial Kings Retired Life), with some humor, and potential romance/harem, this story might be for you.

As a side note, as of Chapter 60, there are 3 potential love interests:

Spoiler

The MCs junior sister under the same master: She is very clingy with him, but it is understandable given that he practically raised her into her current state. The master was always in seclusion, so he taught her his principles (in hopes that she wouldnt implicate him in any problems), when she was brought in at a young age. Despite his philosophy, he spoilers her quite often, and she is the only one aware from the beginning that he is holding back/hiding.
A junior sister of similar age: She is the top disciple of their current generation. She has the highest cultivation amongst them, and can fight opponents several levels higher than her. She seems like a cold person on the outside, but is in fact very kind to those close to her. After MC saved her life twice when they journey together, she wanted thank him for his kindness. This in turn gets her involved with the MC as she gets very defensive of him. Of course, as of now, the MC thinks of her as "toxic" as she involves him with situations he originally had no intention of getting involved with.
His Martial Aunt: She is the youngest disciple of the top daoist in MCs sect. Though, despite calling her the youngest she is over 900 years old... She is a bit of a tom boy and rather immature, but she is one of the top cultivators in the sect (all the top members of the sect are immortals). Through a a mix of confusion caused by her senior brother and sister, and a complete misunderstanding during a conversation with the MC, she feels attraction toward the MC. They hang out a lot normally, though its mostly the MC asking her for help in exchange for some of his brewed wine (she loves drinking).

An over cautious transmigrator caught in the world before a certain age where the Heavenly Courts have not been fully up and running yet. It draws from the background of other famous novels to set the premise for the MC's debut. In order to not get involved with karma, he will have multiple upon multiple back-up plans to not get caught up in anything. It is a bit boring at times and it is interesting at times.

The worst part of the novel is the translation quality. It's not as bad... more>> as reading Engrish, but it's only a step up. You get simple he/she mistakes, calling a woman uncle-master instead of aunt-master, past and present tense mixed up, multiple short sentences, and some paragraphs don't make sense because they are too poorly translated. Picture a mtl editor trying to make sense of what google translate has spat out and this guy/girl doesn't have basic grasp of grammar, and voila, you have this novel ruined by the translator group.

Here's an example: Exalted Wang Qing raised his eyebrows and calmly put the bamboo stick into her sleeve. (He's a guy and putting the bamboo stick into his own sleeves yet turned female in a single sentence.)

As you guys start reading the novel and start getting super annoyed when the MC's junior sister called Ling'e suddenly changes to Lingle at random times, give my review a like! <<less

EDIT

Currently up to chapter 36. Enjoying the premise of the novel and liking the characters. However the translation leaves a lot to be desired. Which makes it a difficult read.

Don't get me wrong, grammatically it's great, instead it's the translation word choice I have an issue with. The translator is doing away with years of xianxia translation precedent, and translating text however he feels like. not just cultivation terms but even general word choice as well!

Take this below sentence from chapter 14 as an example

Li Changshou did not dare to stay out and wander around. Thus, he found a precipice and dug a hole in it, hiding inside.

Here mountain, would've been much more xianxia appropriate word to use, instead of precipice...

There are many other examples

  • Prawn Demons, instead of Sea Demons
  • Blanket instead of Towel
  • Immortal / Spiritual Awareness, instead of Spiritual Sense
  • list goes on...
I would love to see this novel retranslated.

You know the moments in novels when something unexpected happens that puts the MC in a dangerous situation and he must use his luck, wits and will to pass that predicament? Well, here the protagonist sets his life goal to never encounter something like that. He is always prepared and has backup plans. He is so cautious he supposes everyone plots against him while he lies low.

This is a cultivation novel but the universe is not that dog-eats-dog as in other novels. The MC doesn't really encounter schemes... more>> and dangers every other chapter followed by breakthroughs in strength.

No, perhaps because the MC is so prepared he rarely interacts with enemies at all really. Time is spent more on planning. So this is also more of a slice of life novel with humorous episodes usually centered around MC's ridiculous cautiousness.

He is also a cultivation genius because his dao is very stable and doesn't need resources to advance other than some techniques.

I would say this is a ligthearted read. There are times when it gets a bit long winded but never unbearable. The characters feel sometimes bland, but the the writing is far heigher in quality than average a xianxia novel. <<less

This novel is pretty decent and I already knew what I was getting myself into when I started reading this, but honestly it gets boring quite easily after a while. Sure the nature of the MC may be attributed to the fact and I've read "Top Tier Providence" which in some aspects are similar to this novel and in a few cases can be considered even more boring with how the MC for the most part tends to hide and cultivates all day, but I actually find that novel a... more>> lot more enjoyable. This novel's chapters are long and often redundant with not much happening, while the translation also leaves much to be desired. There's also the fact that this novel doesn't place much emphasis on cultivation, more so being on the MC remaining steady and his various scheming and whatnot. Maybe it was my mistake in trying to binge read this, but the enjoyment I had in the initial hundred or so chapters has considerably waned as the novel progressed. It's also quite off putting with how much importance is place on seniority and how often it's used to force the MC into situations he wants no part in. He's constantly sucking up to people and bending his back trying to please those in power to not get on their bad side. Then there's the Saints who order him about as they wish, but they're like gods in this novel and the MC just happily accepts everything. Pretty disappointing for how overhyped this novel is. <<less

I have just finished the novel and I have to say that this novel is not purely a cultivation novel where the MC reigns supreme by virtue of his strength and awes everyone with his power but rather is a novel about scheming, plotting, intrigues. Yes, there are fighting scenes but its not the main role of the story.

This novel is about a guy who transmigrated into the world of the Investiture of the Gods (i.e. 封神演義). This MC is a very cautious guy whose dream is to live forever... more>> which is shown in his name (i.e.长寿 which means longevity). His actions is also a reflection of his character. For example, he developed techniques in order to hide his cultivation level in order to appear as a normal disciple. In the beginning he tries his best to avoid cause and effect, to not draw attention to himself, to avoid becoming the center of attention (as a result of his cultivation talent). However, as the story progresses, he is forced to adapt as he slowly begins to be thrust into the spotlight due to circumstances out of his control. This novel is not about cultivation leveling (i.e. There is very rare mentions of his cultivation improvement) and fighting. The MC will not bulldoze over his enemy solely using his strength but rather the MC will engage in calculated plot, scheming and intrigues in order to win over his opponent.

For those who are bored by the lack of action in the beginning, well it is because it is to build the foundation for the later chapters. As you progress to the later chapters, the plot will evolve to a broader scheme of things, no longer being tied to just the mountain peak but rather to the cultivation world as a whole with much more actions, scheming and plots.

Its a novel where the MC who initially seeks to maintain a low profile and to prevent himself from engaging in any cause and effect (i.e. 因果), Trying to be as detached as possible from the cultivation world. That is why in the earlier chapters, the MC only engages in interaction with his master and junior sister while trying to limit interaction with other people from the sect. However, as the plot progresses, due to circumstances out of his reach, he gets more and more involved in the cultivation world. Only when he is starting to get involved in the whole cultivation world will the plot get better and better.

But overall, don't expect tons and tons of fighting or action pack scenes, that not what this novel is about. Please dont view this novel like the generic xianxia novel where there is lots of face-slapping, MC proving his strength and stunning his fellow peers, getting to the top of one cultivation world and jumping to the next cultivation world.

Started out interesting. The concept is fine, but the narrative is poor. As it so often is the case. Tried to put up with the author's wandering ramblings where he suddenly starts monologuing about strange things out of the blue. I can't even describe it. From what another reviewer said, it appears the author is using some other works as background for this novel. You are expected to know about the history of certain sects being referred to, as well as their founders. And also the heavenly court and its... more>> politics. No intro, just diving right in without regard to the fact that the weak MC has hardly ever left his sect, which itself seems to be an offshoot of a subsidiary of an ancient sect that you should already know about. If you can put up with that, then the poor quality translation will get you. Inconsistent gender pronouns has been mentioned here. Then MC's junior sister suddenly loses her name and she becomes "fairy" and nothing else, and he becomes "senior". So confused. Doing corrections in my mind quickly became tiring, so dropping this. <<less

Original review c419: (2 stars)

It starts out great. The first half of the novel is more or less 5 star quality. The strategies the protagonist comes up with are truly clever and humorous.

But as the story progresses, the protagonist and his strategies become dumber. Sometimes the author is too lazy to come up with good strategies and instead just states that the protagonist solved that problem with his amazing calculations/strategies without actually specifying what those were.

At around chapter 400, the thing I find most unbearable happened. The protagonist made... more>> a very s*upid battle plan (which in itself is not a deal breaker), and naturally couldn't achieve his easily achievable goals (just for the sake of dragging out the plot), but after the battle everyone praised the protagonist to high heaven, because apparently everyone is even dumber than the protagonist. I don't think I can bear to continue reading this tr*sh anymore.

Spoiler

Basically, author wrote that protagonist made detailed plans and considered almost all possibilities for enemy reaction. But enemy used the most obvious strategy that they had also tried to use previously (which the protagonist had dealt with previously), and all the important enemies successfully escaped and joined the bigger enemy, and the protagonist went "oh, I didn't consider that possibility" even though that was the most obvious. Now remember that the author tries to portray the protagonist as an extra cautious person who always thinks 10 steps ahead and everybody in that world considers him the greatest strategist ever. And the most infuriating thing is that author writes this as if the enemy did something completely unexpected that the protagonist could never have anticipated, so it's not his fault. Everyone still congratulated him for his "brilliant" strategy.

Also, the protagonist has a powerful attack that can easily decimate large groups of enemies. He has used it multiple times before so his enemies all know about it. But they still attacked without preparing any counter measures. And in this battle where that attack could have easily wiped out a large part of the enemy's forces, the protagonist doesn't use that attack at all without giving any reason why. A lot of his allied forces died in that battle and he just sighed helplessly. He even let his main target enemy get away without major injuries when in the previous battle he had managed to severely injure that same enemy with that attack.

It's like for the sake of plot progression, the author conveniently forgot he had that attack or that his enemies had used the same strategy before.

Update c700: (2 stars)

The rest of the novel has some interesting parts (that's why I'm giving 2 stars, not 1), but it is mostly filled with boring fillers. The author describes the various events that happened in the classic Chinese text "Investiture of the Gods" in excruciating detail and with boring and repetitive expositions. Throughout the latter part of the book, the protagonist spends all his time and effort trying to make some small changes in these events, most of which don't actually change anything much. I don't know if someone who has read Investiture of the Gods would find this interesting, but I found it boring as hell. Specially since the author drags out each small action taken by the protagonist way beyond what is necessary by adding a lot of unnecessary descriptions and bland interactions.

Update:

The climax of the novel was good, although there were a lot of plot holes eg

Spoiler

The author explained that the primordial world was similar to Chinese mythology because someone who transmigrated from China was responsible for developing the world in that way. But that doesn't explain how characters who had nothing to do with the transmigrated person also had the same names as in Chinese mythology etc.

and the author also pulls out some big Deux Ex Machina. But it was still entertaining.

Overall, I'm increasing the rating to 3 stars due to the satisfying ending. <<less
