I just have the urge to write the review about this novel cause I spent about 3 days and night to almost finish it and have so much to share.
Summary: it's an interesting novel. Interesting enough to keep me read till the end. But there are so many plot hole, the characters’ development are disappointing.
Have you ever watch a Korean drama, which has about 50+ episode? This novel give the same vibe. With this basic plot, I think we don't need that much words. The author can shrink the novel to half, maybe more, and the story and emotions are gonna be the same. I was fed up with all the emotional struggles that repeated over and over again, all the details and events that can be cut for good without effecting the "goodness" of the novel.
Also, there are quite a lot of problem with the basic plot and characters set-up and development. (I read the manwha till about chap 100 and continue with the novel).
What the is the difference in the 2-nd timeline that make the Crown prince (CP) a “wise ruler”, while he is basically a f*ck-up douchebag (well, more like loser) in the 1-st timeline. In the 1-st timeline, he trust the Duke Jena – the head of the noble fraction like a fool (and then casted away Duke Lars and Verita of the pro-emperor fraction). After a few years of work he ended up alone with no one to trust. Doesn’t that mean he is quite s*upid? (How can an intelligent prince, who read so much, work so much with a father guidance end up like that? – the poison does mess up his temper and emotion, but not his rational thinking ability). Then, miraculously, that same s*upid, narrow-mind dude become a wise, clever, decisive ruler in the 2-nd timeline. Because of what? Because he stopped envying Aristia? What a joke.
Second, what made Aristia love the CP in the 1st timeline? How can a clever, perfect, emotional girl (as everyone said) love a s*upid dude who hated her???? Has he ever done something for her to make her love him that much? Yeah I understand that she has lived her whole life as his fiancé, but does a real love requires a real interaction? At least a smile, a favor or something if the sort.
Third, it doesn’t make sense to me that her father didn’t save her life, as well as meet her before, or even during her execution.
And many many more strange thing that doesn’t make any sense but to make the story more dramatic, more pathetic for Aristia in the 1-st timeline. (Oh if you read the story from the 1st CP point of view, you’ll see how absurd they are)
Other than that, all the characters are half-ass. They all lack resolution. In this regards, the CP in 2-nd timeline is the most decisive one. At least he hold on to his crush till the very end.
Aristia: despise her vow that she won’t love the CP, she will inherit the family and all, the whole story is about her getting scared, getting upset, going back and forth between loving him or not, be with him or not, and other... Also she can easily forget her friends. Why do I say so? She basically forget about Allendis and Carssein when they doesn’t come to her =)))). Doesn’t that kind of made her a b*tch LOL.
Aristia’s dad: he loved his wife enough to ignore his family legacy, but was super calm knowing she was poisoned LOL. He loves his daughter the most, he wants her to do thing she wants, but didn’t try to break off the engagement when she said so (I can’t see his action as trying, especially after the old emperor died), also she said she wants to inherit the family, but he doesn’t want her to do so.
Allendis: I am sorry, but if he is a mentally f*ck-up dude like the author described, than there’s no way he would just give up on Aristia like that. That’s not logical. Also if he is the “genius of the century”, won’t he come up with a plan to free Aristia from the engagement and then claim her. But no. Yeah, so much for a genius mind.
Carssein: He’s a laughing stock in term of love. If he doesn’t love Aristia, because he’s devoted to his sword, no problem. But he is, but he decided to be a “good brother” till the end. I am sorry, he is a swordman, not a coward. A guy like him wouldn’t act that way. If Aristia was is love with someone else from the beginning, he may just stay beside her like this, but in the story, Aristia started loving the CP only later on.
Also the plot regarding all the poison and Duke Jena is disappointing. The novel made a fuss about all the investigation, the counterattack from Aristia and all, but they are all so flop. I read and anticipate some surprise, maybe there’s some secret with the poison, maybe someone else close to Aristia and CP were the one behind all the problem. No, it is the villain Duke Jena, just like how the story indicate from the beginning that Duke Jena is the bad guy.
So, in short, if you are a fan of long Korean drama and quite easy going, maybe this novel is your thing. If you want some really quality sh*t, than maybe you should look for something else. Personally, I don’t really regret reading it, but just wish the story was shorter.
Complex characters, lots of emotional entanglements, and angst, but mostly mixed signals and pointless pinings.
DISCLAIMER: The novel is romanticizing toxic relationships. We have the
-elite/noble lady MC X crown prince ML that can't stand her guts for anything but his own misconceptions
-sudden transmigrator from the modern world turned into a savior character (saintess/priestess/prophesized savior transmigrator trope) drops down and also falls in love with crown prince ML
-the new VS the old; harem fight ensues
-rightful fiancée/wife is for some reason branded as 3rd party, and the blockade between true love
-dies of unjustified death
-rebirth So, did she heed her own words when she said in the first timeline that she'd never love scum ML again? Noooooooope. Forever emotionally conflicted, unnecessarily but understandably so (to gtfo the country has always been an option, y'all).
She was destined to be entangled with ML since she was the OG fiancée and all, to keep her noble house and father safe, I'd totally dipped out for good. Can't have that since we need the MC and ML to hook up....
But hold on! He (of course...) had a reason to be a two-timing scumbag that loved to abuse MC!
Reason? Potions.... po-... potions??? Like, reverse love potions??? No, not at all. Potions meant to make him go coocoo up there. But it was more like a 'abuse the love of your life to max capability' potion. Shitty excuse from the author, what a terrible, TERRIBLE redemption attempt.
Abusers are abusers, it doesn't always require a misunderstanding or sudden unconvincing plot device to redeem them.
2nd Timeline ML was alright but, srsly. WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE HIM AGAIN?
Straight back into ML's arms, struggling to convince herself it's ok to love a guy who's high in scum bag potential. There's reluctance in all those steps but you get the gist. They say when you're once bitten twice shy, she held out all of her limbs to get bitten here.
About the transmigrator:
I feel terrible for Jieun. She's the doormat for the doormat MC. You can't just win against the main characters, what belongs to the main character will never be hers even if she tried earnestly. In the end, it's just people trying to survive on top of that royal iceberg by pushing others down to gain more foothold. ML turns out never loved her, she had nobody to support or help her compared to MC who had her father, a strong duke, and even in the 2nd lifetime surrounded by people who'd fall in love at first sight with her. Even towards the end, her life was in MC's hands.
To die or live at someone else's whims for two lifetimes sucks ass, man. I'd totally join in on her revenge wagon. sh*t had me riled up.
I mean, IRL ex-wives/husbands going back to their abusive but changed partners always get a concerned sigh from people but at the end of the day, it's none of our business.
Extremely well written but... the topic is.... ah like eating spaghetti bolognese with sand as an extra topping. Nerve-wracking, gears grinding and loaded with angst.
The author thoroughly sent all of her characters through the abuse machine on the conveyor belt.
The reason why I can't accept ML:
The horrible deeds he's done were because he got drugged. But prior to that, he had misgivings towards MC due to rumors like the true dumbass that 1st timeline Ruve was, he kept misunderstanding her intentionally because of the bad perception he had.
The drug itself wasn't a 'Go hate the female protagonist' potion but a drug to derange him generally, he did fine when it didn't come to MC but whenever she's involved he goes nuts, hence why people wonder if he's not just a gigantic prick towards her especially.
No, the 'you hurt the ones you love the most' excuse doesn't work here, he killed her dad, killed her, abandoned the other waifu Jieun and f*cked off into oblivion ditching his kingdom. Jieun was pregnant, had a baby daughter, and Ruve left both to rot.
So, comes 2nd timeline, and everybody's reasonably reluctant.
Still, a judgmental prick, thankfully... or not, misunderstandings *cough* PREJUDICE gets resolved he had also found out what 1st timeline he had done to her, but STILL pursued her—placing once again his own selfishness over her wellbeing.
Nothing guarantees that things wouldn't take a dip into the negatives if reality hits hard again and he resolves to another type of poison/stimulant like alcohol, who knows what kind of a monster he can possibly turn into again? So yeah, once bitten twice shy. And I know a couple who's just like that IRL, she keeps going back and I just can't, y'all, gimme a break. I read novels to take breaks from reality, not rehash the crap that's the devil's cycle.
The mangwa to this is one of the most bashed for a good reason.
Okay by now I’m sure everyone reading this knows the ending. I had it spoiled for me before she even encountered the third potential ML. So the novel is about a FL who tried to change herself and inherit her knighthood instead of having to marry the prince. I Hated, Hated, HATED how powerless she was to cancel the engagement. It s**ked how none of the other ML even had a chance because she was engaged to the cretin the whole time. Yes I know that in his past life he was being poisoned and having his mind turn wonky... BUT who in their right mind looks into the face of one responsible but such atrocities and loved them. Forgives them, maybe. But to love the power tripping guy who doesn’t even respect your opinion enough to let you cancel an engagement, Never.
I feel like the poison was a bad excuse for Aristia getting r*ped and should've ended up with either Allendis (but after he becomes more mentally stable) or Carsein.
