Spoiler

I just have the urge to write the review about this novel cause I spent about 3 days and night to almost finish it and have so much to share.

Summary: it's an interesting novel. Interesting enough to keep me read till the end. But there are so many plot hole, the characters’ development are disappointing.

Have you ever watch a Korean drama, which has about 50+ episode? This novel give the same vibe. With this basic plot, I think we don't need that much words. The author can shrink the novel to half, maybe more, and the story and emotions are gonna be the same. I was fed up with all the emotional struggles that repeated over and over again, all the details and events that can be cut for good without effecting the "goodness" of the novel.

Also, there are quite a lot of problem with the basic plot and characters set-up and development. (I read the manwha till about chap 100 and continue with the novel).

What the is the difference in the 2-nd timeline that make the Crown prince (CP) a “wise ruler”, while he is basically a f*ck-up douchebag (well, more like loser) in the 1-st timeline. In the 1-st timeline, he trust the Duke Jena – the head of the noble fraction like a fool (and then casted away Duke Lars and Verita of the pro-emperor fraction). After a few years of work he ended up alone with no one to trust. Doesn’t that mean he is quite s*upid? (How can an intelligent prince, who read so much, work so much with a father guidance end up like that? – the poison does mess up his temper and emotion, but not his rational thinking ability). Then, miraculously, that same s*upid, narrow-mind dude become a wise, clever, decisive ruler in the 2-nd timeline. Because of what? Because he stopped envying Aristia? What a joke.

Second, what made Aristia love the CP in the 1st timeline? How can a clever, perfect, emotional girl (as everyone said) love a s*upid dude who hated her???? Has he ever done something for her to make her love him that much? Yeah I understand that she has lived her whole life as his fiancé, but does a real love requires a real interaction? At least a smile, a favor or something if the sort.

Third, it doesn’t make sense to me that her father didn’t save her life, as well as meet her before, or even during her execution.

And many many more strange thing that doesn’t make any sense but to make the story more dramatic, more pathetic for Aristia in the 1-st timeline. (Oh if you read the story from the 1st CP point of view, you’ll see how absurd they are)

Other than that, all the characters are half-ass. They all lack resolution. In this regards, the CP in 2-nd timeline is the most decisive one. At least he hold on to his crush till the very end.

Aristia: despise her vow that she won’t love the CP, she will inherit the family and all, the whole story is about her getting scared, getting upset, going back and forth between loving him or not, be with him or not, and other... Also she can easily forget her friends. Why do I say so? She basically forget about Allendis and Carssein when they doesn’t come to her =)))). Doesn’t that kind of made her a b*tch LOL.

Aristia’s dad: he loved his wife enough to ignore his family legacy, but was super calm knowing she was poisoned LOL. He loves his daughter the most, he wants her to do thing she wants, but didn’t try to break off the engagement when she said so (I can’t see his action as trying, especially after the old emperor died), also she said she wants to inherit the family, but he doesn’t want her to do so.

Allendis: I am sorry, but if he is a mentally f*ck-up dude like the author described, than there’s no way he would just give up on Aristia like that. That’s not logical. Also if he is the “genius of the century”, won’t he come up with a plan to free Aristia from the engagement and then claim her. But no. Yeah, so much for a genius mind.

Carssein: He’s a laughing stock in term of love. If he doesn’t love Aristia, because he’s devoted to his sword, no problem. But he is, but he decided to be a “good brother” till the end. I am sorry, he is a swordman, not a coward. A guy like him wouldn’t act that way. If Aristia was is love with someone else from the beginning, he may just stay beside her like this, but in the story, Aristia started loving the CP only later on.

Also the plot regarding all the poison and Duke Jena is disappointing. The novel made a fuss about all the investigation, the counterattack from Aristia and all, but they are all so flop. I read and anticipate some surprise, maybe there’s some secret with the poison, maybe someone else close to Aristia and CP were the one behind all the problem. No, it is the villain Duke Jena, just like how the story indicate from the beginning that Duke Jena is the bad guy.

So, in short, if you are a fan of long Korean drama and quite easy going, maybe this novel is your thing. If you want some really quality sh*t, than maybe you should look for something else. Personally, I don’t really regret reading it, but just wish the story was shorter.

A bit confuding at first, but after reading some spoilers of the novel, I totally fell in love with the plot.

I dont undstand the people who are angry that the writer for making the MC ending with ML.... I mean.... she does explain what happen and why did the characters act the way they did. (but opinions are opinions). I recomened giving a change to the author to actually explain the story.

I'm a manhwa reader and I reached the part where I just had enough and couldn't keep tolerating it anymore. Some fans said skipping the story at the beginning because of the spoiler is wrong, because you haven't seen the full picture. So I think reading chapter 132 is enough to give me the full picture of all characters' circumstances, and honestly The Abandoned Empress is still tr*sh in my eyes.

  1. "Ruve is a changed man", lol.

No, his second timeline isn't really different from his first timeline self. The only difference is he is in love with Tia now. In chapter 132 Tia took an oath of loyalty to the emperor, dude basically threw a tantrum in front of bunch of people. He was shameless, was reduced to a man-child. "A wise emperor would accept that oath, don't you think. But I will not do so". Okay, so that means he isn't a wise emperor and he puts his feelings first, what an irresponsible ruler. Uwu, dude repeatedly said he would always respect Tia's wish, but he forcefully kissed her when she expressed her objection and said "Looks like I lost control for a moment" sorry not sorry. Ruve is amazing, everyone. What a hypocrite, he's even an incompetent ruler. His country is protected by plot armor, so it's fine I guess.

2. PTSD doesn't work that way.

I guess Ruve has changed... lol. But I don't believe the victim who suffers from trauma can marry the absolutely innocent twin of the perpetrator, they will be reminded of their trauma constantly. That's precisely the reason why the author of novel, films have to put content warning at the beginning. They don't want the viewers to suffer from the trauma, because even similar situation in fiction can easily cause anxiety. And Tia froze, fainted, was shaking, she was suffering from trauma. Yet she forgot about it later on, how strange. Don't give her trauma then if you're going to handle it that way.

3. Forgotten characters, like Carsein and Allendis. They had lots of potentials, but they were forgotten and got sidelined in the end. I was disappointed.

4. Cartoonish villains, yay, I hate Duke Jenna because he is ridiculous as a Villain. I guess he is just evil

Just finished chapter 53 in manhwa and I am crying here. I think I understood how powerless is she and how difficult for her to avoid her fate.

With that kind of past, I think everyone will get broken like that. She is really strong and determined.

The story is going pretty well. There are some mysteries about her past and his mother. I am really curious about it.

So. With such a short translation of the novel, people may no understand it very clearly. I you can, I suggest you read the Manhwa (If you haven't) to know more. I'm pretty sure that the English Translation of the Manhwa has gone a bit further now?

So, a small summary of me maybe this:

Arisitia was supposed to marry the crown prince of the kingdom. However, due to the appearance of a mysterious girl whom where she came from is a mystery, and her supposed to be husband married the mysterious girl instead.

... more>> After a series of misunderstandings, tragic events and abuse happening to Arisitia, she was sentenced to death for attempting mu*der on the Emperor (That dickass you guys can call, but he's my bae). After being excecuted, Arisitia wakes up another time to find out that she has traversed back in time to when she was young. After setting on a trip to a sacred place, she finds out vaguely the reason she's been reborn. From that on, she declared to herself that she would become stronger and to not mingle with the royalty. But it seems like she can't bring herself to hate the Prince.

For me, this was quite a nice story. I loved the interactions between Tia and her beloved father! Her interactions with other people was nice to see as well. The Prince may be a dickass, sucker or a slag you may call, but he's actually my favorite male character in this Novel/Manhwa. Reasons include:

  • I'm a sucker for blue haired male characters, damn it.
  • His growth as a character, he grew up to actually cares for Tia,
    Spoiler

heck he even calls people when Tia had a mental breakdown (The reason was because of fear of the said guy), though that only appears in the raw Manhwa]

I was expecting a revenge story what I got was tr*sh. This is not Villainess Story, The FL was never a villain the first timeline who destroy romance who two lovebirds like in Villainess stories goes. It worst...

Spoiler

Even there us two good male lead candidate. We got stuck with the prince.

Yup, the prince who r*pe the FL, abuse her and kill her family. She didn't even deserve it since she is not a Villainess. She didn't harass the prince mistress nor did anything in bad timeline.

She got 2nd chance but still end up with tr*sh ML cause he got drugged to hate FL on first timeline. Like what kind of drugs the author smoking. I like magic is believable but drugs?

But what kind of mind control that makes the person hate someone but r*pe them. What the hell..

Bish be defending this ML cause he has sobby backstory doesn't change that he is a rapist and abuser. Just because there is Redo doesn't erase what he did.

Okay by now I’m sure everyone reading this knows the ending. I had it spoiled for me before she even encountered the third potential ML. So the novel is about a FL who tried to change herself and inherit her knighthood instead of having to marry the prince. I Hated, Hated, HATED how powerless she was to cancel the engagement. It s**ked how none of the other ML even had a chance because she was engaged to the cretin the whole time. Yes I know that in his past life he was being poisoned and having his mind turn wonky... BUT who in their right mind looks into the face of one responsible but such atrocities and loved them. Forgives them, maybe. But to love the power tripping guy who doesn’t even respect your opinion enough to let you cancel an engagement, Never.

I really liked the manhwa so to know who MC ends up with I read the spoilers. To be honest, if she really ends up with that scumbag emperor, it's really not worth continuing with the manhwa or novel.

The blue haired scumbag is a lot different in both the lives which I don't understand how? In the second life, he is more intuitive and knew MC's mother too, where the hell was that understanding in the first life. It's like author whitewashed and changed scumbag's character completely in the second... more>> life.

Also, I didn't get someone being 'god's favourite '. What BS!!! If she was dated with the scumbag, then let it be that way, MC was anyway trying to create her own destiny away from the royals and scumbag and his idiotic 'the one's. <<less

This story doesn’t suit mainstream values. Let’s get that out of the way. Being unhappy with a character’s choices is a reader’s right but does that mean that the writing is bad?

I’m grateful for second chances myself. And people who do awful things and then regret them still have to live on. Should they suffer for the rest of their lives?

Most people seem to think so. But I hope you never find yourself in that position. The male lead was young, tricked and drugged. Alone and shouldering great responsibility. And... more>> he changed in the second timeline. He hadn’t done those heinous things.

The story is poignant. The writing flows. Aristia is lovely and lovable and the surrounding characters are realistic and relatable. Not a light read. If you don’t fall into rage you might find it thought provoking. <<less

I get it why so many reviewers hated ML in this story. I initially only read the manga version and ML did looked better in there so I didn't hate him much but I change my opinion after reading ML's POV in the novel version.

Yes, ML was a complete sc*m no matter how hard the author tried to make his image better by making him some not-so-tragic character with unhappy childhood. And the poison really didn't justify all ML's wrongdoings in the past. The poison only made him more irritable... more>> but because ML already hated MC initially, it only amplified his hatred until it's out of control. Yes, he hated her and it was because some childish reason. The current ML also hated her but changed his mind after seeing that MC wasn't interested in him (yes, it's the classic "You chase me, I ignore you... you ignore me, I chase you").

And making 2nd MLs (Allendis and Carsein) a high quality gentleman really didn't help making ML's image better. Although Allendis had a dark personality, he treated MC well. Carsein had a cheerful personality and like Allendis, he also treated MC well. I don't know why the author made them so good if in the end MC still ended up with ML. They were so pitiful, especially Allendis who chose to run away after MC rejected him and was still very much in love with her even years after that.

I also find Jieun very pitiful. She clearly didn't want to transmigrate to another world but in the name of fate, she was forced to be a cannon fodder between MC and ML.

Spoiler

In the past, Jieun seemed so glorious after getting ML's affection but it only lasted 4 years. After that, ML kept comparing her to the late MC and even left her alone when she got pregnant with his child.

The current Jieun came back with her memories intact to take a revenge to ML but it still didn't end well for her. She indeed kept her life but she was forced to live as a commoner in another country for the rest of her life.

[collapse]

Overall, I give this story 3 stars for the sake of Allendis and Carsein. <<less

Ho boy, this one special dumpster fire truck, one well-written complex dumpster fire truck.
Complex characters, lots of emotional entanglements, and angst, but mostly mixed signals and pointless pinings.
DISCLAIMER: The novel is romanticizing toxic relationships.

We have the
-elite/noble lady MC X crown prince ML that can't stand her guts for anything but his own misconceptions
-sudden transmigrator from the modern world turned into a savior character (saintess/priestess/prophesized savior transmigrator trope) drops down and also falls in love with crown prince ML
-the new VS the old; harem fight ensues
-rightful fiancée/wife is for some reason branded as 3rd party, and the blockade between true love
-dies of unjustified death... more>> /> -rebirth

So, did she heed her own words when she said in the first timeline that she'd never love scum ML again? Noooooooope. Forever emotionally conflicted, unnecessarily but understandably so (to gtfo the country has always been an option, y'all).
Spoiler

She was destined to be entangled with ML since she was the OG fiancée and all, to keep her noble house and father safe, I'd totally dipped out for good. Can't have that since we need the MC and ML to hook up....

[collapse]

2nd MLs come in, along with family and friends, to soothe her wounds, just for ML to drop by and stir the pot. He essentially doesn't do anything bad, but readers are over his BS from 1st timeline.
But hold on! He (of course...) had a reason to be a two-timing scumbag that loved to abuse MC!

Spoiler

Reason? Potions.... po-... potions??? Like, reverse love potions??? No, not at all. Potions meant to make him go coocoo up there. But it was more like a 'abuse the love of your life to max capability' potion. Shitty excuse from the author, what a terrible, TERRIBLE redemption attempt.
Abusers are abusers, it doesn't always require a misunderstanding or sudden unconvincing plot device to redeem them.
2nd Timeline ML was alright but, srsly. WHY WOULD YOU CHOOSE HIM AGAIN?

[collapse]
Ok, reasons aside, instead of picking some sane person next to her who's treating her nice, the heart wants what the heart wants and that is apparently PTSD abuse.
Straight back into ML's arms, struggling to convince herself it's ok to love a guy who's high in scum bag potential. There's reluctance in all those steps but you get the gist.

They say when you're once bitten twice shy, she held out all of her limbs to get bitten here.
About the transmigrator:
Spoiler

I feel terrible for Jieun. She's the doormat for the doormat MC. You can't just win against the main characters, what belongs to the main character will never be hers even if she tried earnestly. In the end, it's just people trying to survive on top of that royal iceberg by pushing others down to gain more foothold. ML turns out never loved her, she had nobody to support or help her compared to MC who had her father, a strong duke, and even in the 2nd lifetime surrounded by people who'd fall in love at first sight with her. Even towards the end, her life was in MC's hands.
To die or live at someone else's whims for two lifetimes sucks ass, man. I'd totally join in on her revenge wagon. sh*t had me riled up.

[collapse]

All in all, the TL;DR version Highly abusive novel, dog blood drama (not as bad as remarried empress level of wtf but enough for you to want to put this sh*t aside and try to meditate in peace), poor abandoned underappreciated 2nd MLs, unlucky cannon fodders who got dragged through this misery TWICE because happiness is occupied and reserved by the main CP...
I mean, IRL ex-wives/husbands going back to their abusive but changed partners always get a concerned sigh from people but at the end of the day, it's none of our business.
Extremely well written but... the topic is.... ah like eating spaghetti bolognese with sand as an extra topping. Nerve-wracking, gears grinding and loaded with angst.
The author thoroughly sent all of her characters through the abuse machine on the conveyor belt.
The reason why I can't accept ML:
Spoiler

The horrible deeds he's done were because he got drugged. But prior to that, he had misgivings towards MC due to rumors like the true dumbass that 1st timeline Ruve was, he kept misunderstanding her intentionally because of the bad perception he had.

The drug itself wasn't a 'Go hate the female protagonist' potion but a drug to derange him generally, he did fine when it didn't come to MC but whenever she's involved he goes nuts, hence why people wonder if he's not just a gigantic prick towards her especially.

No, the 'you hurt the ones you love the most' excuse doesn't work here, he killed her dad, killed her, abandoned the other waifu Jieun and f*cked off into oblivion ditching his kingdom. Jieun was pregnant, had a baby daughter, and Ruve left both to rot.

So, comes 2nd timeline, and everybody's reasonably reluctant.
Still, a judgmental prick, thankfully... or not, misunderstandings *cough* PREJUDICE gets resolved he had also found out what 1st timeline he had done to her, but STILL pursued her—placing once again his own selfishness over her wellbeing.

Nothing guarantees that things wouldn't take a dip into the negatives if reality hits hard again and he resolves to another type of poison/stimulant like alcohol, who knows what kind of a monster he can possibly turn into again? So yeah, once bitten twice shy. And I know a couple who's just like that IRL, she keeps going back and I just can't, y'all, gimme a break. I read novels to take breaks from reality, not rehash the crap that's the devil's cycle.

[collapse]
Side Note: I f*cking regret paying for the manhwa ver., even though not fully, I regret every single cent poured into this garbage. <<less

To all the new readers here who are getting spoilers about the ending, please give this story a chance. Most of the people who rate this 0 stars have read only 2 chapters and misunderstand the spoilers, thinking that it’s a shallow story because the MC ends up with the evil prince from the beginning, when really, it’s the furthest thing from shallow.

People often disregard that one of the themes of this story is that “how you grow up affects the person you will be”. You can see it in... more>> the way the two other male leads, Carsein and Allendis, are compared.

Spoiler

Allendis was the second son of his family and was much more capable than his older brother who was sick and weak, yet he remained the heir of the family because his father thought it wouldn’t be fair if Allendis became the heir. And the father always treated Allendis like a tool, and all that caused him to grow up and become cold (to everyone except Aristia, who was the first person who didn’t treat him that way).

Meanwhile Carsein grew up significantly better, and had a pretty normal childhood. And thus he was a lot nicer and was the most genuine (and mentally healthy lol) out of the three main leads.

[collapse]

Yes, the prince was an evil bastard in the previous life but when Aristia was reincarnated things obviously didn’t stay the same. The changes she made affected him as well, and caused him to grow up and be different from the prince that Aristia faced in the past. And people have said that the author didn’t account for her PTSD from everything he did to her, but like... they did?? The first few times they meet Aristia can’t even look him in the eye without freezing up, and it took several encounters over many years for her to grow comfortable with him, and realize that he wasn’t the same prince from her past life. Their relationship developed really naturally imo.

Spoiler

And the way he falls in love with her is so cute. In the past, Ruve always thought her to be cold and heartless, because she always put the empire first and tried to become the “perfect empress” that everyone expects her to be. But in this life he got to see a different side of her, one that’s lively, vivid, and full of emotion.

[collapse]

I honestly love this story. Every character we meet has depth and is complex and has a reason for doing the things they do (ex. The emperor, although that doesn’t mean I agree with what he did) not just because they’re evil or nice. And the character development is natural, and takes place over several years.

I was rooting for Carsein throughout the story, but in the end I’m fine that Ruve and Aristia ended up together because they’re a nice couple and story-wise it’s a very satisfying ending, and the author developed their relationship throughout the last 3 volumes so it wasn’t out of the blue either. <<less

I think you have to decide what you're okay with before you start this one. Check the spoilers for what happened in her past life before she's reincarnated. I was okay with it all going in and was completely satisfied with the transformation of the ML into a loving husband. I also appreciate MC's who learn some skills and work hard. So it was nice... more>> to watch her train and grow. Also the translations are complete, which is a plus for me. <<less

I don't know whether to like or hate this novel.

The FL was good. It would be better if she continued became the successor because she had that nice potential. Sadly, she ended up marrying the prince. It wasn't that bad tho. I'm okay with the lovey dovey with the prince, but I think we should get a different ending.

What I hate the most in this novel is the FL being foolish if it's about the prince. I know, I know. She being confused and much considerations is natural, I'll do... more>> so if I'm her.

But imagine being the prince. I would be so mad and gave up on her because of her fickle demeanor.

Sometimes I feel like 'omggg she's really fineeee. She's much stronger than I thinkkk I love her very much' and than it became 'fucc why did the FL very weak I hate her' so fast.

The story execution is not that good, neither bad. And the character development is okay but yahh... Idk...

Just like what I said, Idk whether to like or dislike.

I pitty 2nd ML (especially Allen) very much. I never dislike Allen, and I think he should get a happy ending and forget about tia. But the author seems like she doesn't think so. And it break my heart so much that I cried.

I don't recommend you to read this novel. Honestly, the manhwa version is way much better. But if you have spare time, read it if you want. <<less

The spoilers made me give up on this story once, but I am glad the extended spoilers made me give it a second chance.

how much responsibility does one have for actions that happened in an alternate universe? A diffrent story seemed to have a reader base that seemed to think that, you can't judge a 2 year old for things she hasn't done (and thus, possibly creating a self fulfilling prophecy?)

I really could write alot about this story, but I think it is amazing how it as one of... more>> the highest rate of people creating accounts just to give it 1 or 5 stars, all based on spoilers. <<less

I'm going to get straight to the point, I absolutely hated how Aristia ended up, but I loved the plot and the art excluding the ending part.
Spoiler

I feel like the poison was a bad excuse for Aristia getting r*ped and should've ended up with either Allendis (but after he becomes more mentally stable) or Carsein.

[collapse]
Aristia is a smart, beautiful, strong and capable woman. She did not deserve this.
