Solo Leveling

10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as “Hunters”.

However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I’m someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of catacombs, the “World’s Weakest”.

Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled catacombs… at least until I found a hidden catacomb with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank catacombs!

In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise.

Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!

this novel is fantastic, if you enjoy game system mechanics coupled with underlying mystery, you'll enjoy this novel. I originally came from the fantastic webcomic and when I peeked at the novel to see what would happen next, the next thing I knew I was on chapter 204 and had to stop myself from reading the rest. I enjoyed the characterization of MC, the tiny sparks of humor, even the side stories where we see MC gather back those important to him. The translations are also quite fantastic.

That... more>> said, while it's good it's also nothing new. MC is so OP he clears dungeons by himself, why bother even having any other S ranks when MC literally summons an army at will? He can and will essentially render all the other hunters moot, especially when stronger monsters pop up and not even other S ranks can dent them but MC sliced through like butter. The power disparity between MC and others is so laughably huge, quite literally everyone in the entire world is rendered useless after the jeju arc. Also I find the romance a little lacking and would have rather done without or had it fleshed out a bit more.

It might not be original, but you could definitely have a good time. The pacing helps keep it from dragging and there's small things that keep the story refreshing. <<less

It is a cool action-packed novel but there is not much to invest in the characters. The entirety of the setting with its background stories has good potentials to be explored but it was left hanging after briefly introduced. I think it shares the same criticism with Ray being a "Mary Sue" MC. Readers will mainly focus on the one-dimensional personality of the MC i.e. Leveling up. Perhaps it was with the fast pacing of the story that the other characters (e.g. The main antagonist, family members, etc.) have no... more>> much substance for readers to root for because the MC also rendered them insignificant. If you do not read the side stories then too much dissatisfaction will dwell in you for having an abrupt ending. Overall, the novel is good for those who seek cool and indomitable MC's in dungeon exploits. <<less

MC: Bland, he changes constantly that made me think different authors were writing him. Not the brightest either, gets a item that allows him to gain a stealth skill yet doesn't use it right away until after a boss fight, he remarks afterwards if he used it how he could've snuck up on the boss and such.

Power: So everyone that has a Rank:E-S can't level up or grow their strength/power, if you get stuck with Rank D power then sucks for you. You can raise it by so called re-awakening... more>> but it's like nonexistent. Seems like a sh*t plot piece just to make everybody jealous and be in awe of MC since he can grow to be the strongest.

Plot: Found it highly predictable, all the parties he entered up to chapter 30 had people betraying him/trying to kill him/leave him to die. If it's already like that then I can sadly guess how the novel goes.

Romance: Haven't encountered any but from other reviews I must offer my opinion and say it would be sh*t like they say given the novel I've read so far.

Long review short: Just read Everyone else is a returnee since that MC makes this one seem like the biggest idiot ever.

Just my opinion though. <<less

Another op MC with a bland personality. Every other character is pointless and useless. The korean proganda is annoying at best and disgusting at worst. Literally every other country is bad and only S. Korea is good. Romance is sudden and poorly written. The novel is amazing until the end of the jeju arc. After that there is no more challenges or any real development besides him railroading every enemy without any struggle. I like a OP MC but only when there still a challenge and things around that still... more>> make MC bring out their true potential. if MC just becomes super strong and there's no longer any challenges and we're only halfway through the book... That's a problem. <<less

It's a fine novel.

Novel has its positive and negative aspects, but it is exactly how the author wanted it to be.

World building, level system, villains are well thought-out here. It feels like author put a lot of effort into it. The whole story looks more or less logical and the ending was satisfying.

What I liked the most is that you've got to gradually uncover all of the most important questions during the story. And it is not a half-assed explanation. Where is that level-up system coming from, why is it... more>> looking like that, why was it created, why the protagonist was chosen by it, how dungeons came out to be, for what purpose, and many others.

It is on a level higher than your usual 'ret*rded goddess chooses the most average middle schooler with no purpose or reason whatsoever'.

The thing that the most people are whining about is the human interactions. Well, I am not trying to defend the novel here or anything, but it is actually exactly how the novel is supposed to be. 'I ALONE level-up' or 'SOLO leveling'. I mean, you wouldn't really blame the novel about the dungeons for the existence of the said dungeons in it, right? Not only that, but novel is also giving a logical explanation why the protagonist is the only one who is so capable.

Well, understanding it and liking it are completely different things, and this is the reason why I am giving it 4* instead of 5. <<less

Pros;

It was an interesting novel where the MC who at first was the weakest hunter but luckily one day able to obtain cheat like gamer ability and continuosly level up & growing stronger end up becoming overpowered cool character that save the world alone.

I found that the only thing that keep me to finish this is just the novel plot that made us want to know more about the unending mystery that was well used in this novel.

... more>> Cons;

Besides being a bit of racism in the novel

I still feels that the character development of this novel is a bit unfair because they only focus on MC growth alone whereas restricting other characters growth forcing MC to face the enemies alone as the others are not able to support him due to their limited growth.

Maybe because I try to compare this with some similiar novels like Everyone Else a Returnee where despite being left out alone by everone & have a late start the MC in this novel relentlessly work hard & not give up in any situation and meticulous thinking he was able to overcome a lot of dangerous situations & keep on moving foward and become the strongest by not luck but through his own effort and end up being the hope of humanity.

And the other charcters growth also is not limited and able to level up too & support the MC

There is also another similiar development in My Never Ending Death Flag where the loner MC recieve support from other charcters too

So I still believe that it would be better if other characters beside MC can also level up or grow so that the story can be more balance. <<less

To put it simply, its a perfect story.

  • Romance, although just a little but the writer could express it clearly
  • Action, well described and you can imagine every move.
  • Misunderstanding, although not that big its nice written
  • Character growth, at first the MC is loser and useless but the writer could change it little by little every chapter.

disappointed

first story not worth above 4 stars, but it is not in my control. It is a template Korean game element story, I have read 3-4 similar stories, MC starts super weak, some tragedy happens to him but he gains power but the power is better than everybody else and in few chapters he outshone everybody, but what he sees the problem is not the problem and some deep plot is brewing in shadows and he is the only one that can solve it. But I guess people like these... more>> kinds of stories because of the new kind of system of powering up.

I can recommend much better Korean web novel, second coming of avarice or legendary mechanic, try it out, at least you will get a sense of environment and characters <<less

I' read the Manhwa first before finding this guy translating it on reddit and I must say the novel in the beginning is very similar to the Manwha, but has more details and thoughts of the characters which is nice.

Later on, after a few arcs, you'll see a few more differences, but I do like the novel a lot more thus far.

The overall story is pretty simple and straightforward initially (weak Awakened dude earns a system to continually power up, while other stronger Awakened can't -normally- get stronger powers, only... more>> more experienced in using their set power.), but just as I was starting to get kinda bored it threw out a few twists and turns to keep me interested. It looks like a good korean LN so far, with all the typical things you'd want/expect to see in a solid story.

If you like korean novels, level-up systems and a nice power trip you'll probably end up liking this one. <<less

I began reading this novel when it was still being translated which means I've completed reading this a couple of years ago. Like most readers, I got interested in this novel due to its popular webtoon. The art was amazing and the story engaging. But, the thirst and curiosity to read the rest of the story made me read the novel. I still remember when it used to update daily. The worldview and creativity are not the best but good. The power progression is one of the best I've seen.

STORY-... more>> The story is not much unique as it does not bring anything new to the table. But, if you haven't read many novels or this is one of your first novels (which was the case for me) then I'll highly recommend it. It contains a little number of plot holes and plot armour. There is not much depth in the story as it's pretty straightforward.

CHARACTERS - The second best thing about this novel is its main lead. The other side characters are not well fleshed out and lack substance. There is a very huge gap between the protagonist and the other hunters even in the early stage which just makes them useless in the middle to final stages of the novel. Such huge power discrepency can sometimes lead to worse effects than intended. Apart from 3-5 characters, there is little to no development. The romance is literally non-existent so people hoping to see some romance, don't get fooled by the romantic-subplot tag.

ACTION - The best thing about this novel is its well-executed action scenes. Almost all the action scenes are great and engaging. The main reason people liked its webtoon was because of its art style and beautifully executed action scenes. The power progression is one of the best I've seen.

ENDING - The ending was a bit rushed IMO. I think the author could've done a better job about the climax scenes with the main antagonists. The backstory about the events happening and why was the ML chosen for that great power is also explained here which was a good thing to see. Also, I think some characters didn't get the proper ending that they deserved.

The worldview and creativity are not the best but good. The power progression is one of the best I've seen. If you are patient enough to stick with the webtoon then you don't need to read this because the webtoon is by far better than the novel. It may be decent or good enough for new novel readers which was the case for me, but if you've already read novels of this genre then you will find it mediocre at best.

The only reason I've given this novel 5 stars instead of 3 is that this is one of my first novels and my first read of its genre. I still remember waiting for every day to read its new updated chapter. At that time, I really enjoyed reading it and that's what really matters to me. <<less

Spoiler

After death he becomes player thats okay but he becomes handsome too what lot he need strong for host but thats means nothing to become handsome lol dont know what author thinking here when he make MC not only strong but handsome too thats bullsh*t if you ask me.

Then we see Japan great country but they a**holes they have no honor or morals they try too trap koreans to death because they are a**holes and author loves shitting on Japan so much Japan S ranks owned by ants then they attacked by titants hmm where we see titans and ants before hmm and what ? Who save them yeah korean hunter aka our MC and they Japan becomes worshiper for MC case closed and dont forget that they are a**holes okay author dont like them I hate when author brings their personal beliefs to series one of low and worst thing they ever do other than rushing ending.

Side characters or other S and A ranks ? Oh they exist but after ant arc they becomes nothing more than just mobs only S rank girl gets something from MC nothing more I dont wanna even talk about pairing so s*upid theres meaning for that lol there no female with personality lol all of them mobs nothing more first girl go aways and never seen ever later that and second girl get role of gf then bam thats it author dont care about that imagine that you are epic hunter but yet there no girls fans ? Or other S rank girls ? Lol nope no author add one S rank girl then thats enough case closed.

This MC %100 self insert I am sure about that he always wins there no failure he cool handsome always do epic things everybody loves her he is best.

I dont wanna even talk about bad guys lol they are bunch of beings that dont wanna be good boys and girl they wanna destroy that it there no backstory for that then hmm for rulers ? They kill their masters then fight againts bad guys support good guys then MC got somewhat op power and monarch gives free pass for op powers then bam end of story he takes time back then this is where story ends I think this novel rushed after giant arch bad guys come early then evertyhing rushed

[collapse]

So my score for this novel for first like 150 chapters 4/5 after that 3/5 after that sadly novel becomes self insert MC and mob friends adventures nothing more.

For me this novel needed stay as grinding and survive theme nothing more there no need him to be handsome and cool character but guy with power even no one cares her he still gonna project them not something like I am cool and so self insert MC. <<less

Another Modern Day, Dungeon Crawler, Korean WN I've stumbled across that I found to be incredibly similar to 2 other Korean WNs I've read "SSN" & "MHK". In both the dungeon runs happening in the forefront and the mysterious "true" story slowly unravelling in the background. What it does to set itself apart from the countless other similar novels I've read is that the story remains pretty solid throughout, without jumping the shark towards the end. Though it doesn't change the fact that the ending is about as abrupt as... more>> you can get, with about 20 side story chapters to tie up any loose ends.

Plus the incredibly overpowered Sung Jin-Woo becomes incredibly dull and most other named characters just become irrelevant. Simply because the story will not allow others to Level, giving them nothing to do towards the end. Although just like how Master Hunter K would be suitable as a Hollywood Live Action, Solo Leveling is best experienced as a Manhwa & possibly Anime. <<less

This is a really good novel. What I like about this novel is the fact that main character grows throughout the novel. MC kind of starts as dumb, which is evident with his stats spread, but fortunately, he realizes the importance of each stats as novel goes on.

Also, the action scenes are really well described and are easy to follow and side characters are likeable and most are relevant throughout the story. Side characters also don't just exist to praise the main character. Many of the are wise and intelligent,... more>> which is a plus in my books. That makes them more relatable.

Also, all the side stories or extra chapters, whatever you like to call them, after the main story finishes are delight to read. Reading through the main story for those side chapters alone is worth it. <<less

I came here after reading the first season of the manhua. The manhua was really good and I really liked it, but when I started reading the novel after the end of the Jeju raid, my interest completely dwindled as the plot never move foward and everything I was reading was meaningless. You can resume this novel lets see this one man show of a Gary Stu type MC, thats about it.

The story had potential yes, but it's lost as nothing ever develops. Most side character are that, side characters... more>> they almost never appear and have almost no personality beyond there role they play. It's such a shame that none of the characters have any meaningfull development, they only exist to be amazed and Seong Jin-woo powers, so that the reader can understand what amazing character he is.

I'm really disappointed and lost almost all interest in finishing this novel, in fact I don't care anymore.

P.S: Sorry about my rant type review, but this novel left such a bad inpression in me after I had such high hopes. <<less

Originally I started I alone level up after reading the manwha, thinking that the product that I enjoy would be even more enjoyable in novel form. I was wrong. Here is a story where nothing matters, the personalities, the places, the events, everything after jeju island ark just feels empty. Like somebody just couldn't be bothered anymore. The romance is awful. The characters are awful, if you were given a list of actions and asked to match which character would do them you'd be stuck as there is very little... more>> to differentiate from our MC to any of the other charachters that are introduced and then forgotten. Overall what the novel fails at the most is proving to me how he levels up alone over than the very surface reasoning. He's never without comrade's or friends or... Anything. All of his personal desires are met easily, there is nothing to invest yourself into. His leveling up, his goals, his relationships none of them are that interesting. It's the perfect picture of wasted potential and bad characterisation. <<less

It was decent until the romance started... I'm the type of person who leans towards romance and if I don't approve, I leave.

I would've liked MC to end up with the Healer girl, Yi Ju-Hui, who stayed by his side for a long time. At the start, it looked like they had a really good relationship with each other. I was sad that she had to leave but I thought they would encounter each other soon. Sadly not.

MC ended up with the only S rank female hunter in South Korea! Novels like these MC always need to end up with someone strong... In my perspective, she first began acquainting herself with MC because he had no disgusting smell due to his power and soon, fell in love with him. Was it because of his strength? or his smell? I don't bloody have a clue. She just, boom! Had feelings. Smh.

I started reading this because of the manhwa. (The manhwa is frigging amazing!) I lost sleep and finished 85 chapters in one sitting. So, I continued reading the novel to quench my desire to spoil myself. Lol.

Well, the translation quality is okay but I got disappointed reading the novel. The abrupt romance is making me cringe (?). Lol. I prefer that there's no romance in this kind of world development and plot. It's too sudden maybe because the inner turmoil of MC's emotions are not fleshed out well. So, adding... more>> some romance seemed kinda sudden. Lol.

Just like what one of the reviews stated, I really should have stopped after the jeju island arc.

Haa.I'm really disappointed. So I'm going to stop reading the novel for now and pick it up again in the future (probably).

I will stick in reading the manhwa for now. Lol. <<less

Having reached the end, I don't think it's a bad story, but it's one of those stories that seemingly doesn't want to commit to its premise.

This is a LitRPG story with game elements. Levels, stats, skills, titles, the works. But the only character this applies to is the MC, with the story not bothering to include any information about side characters or other monsters. It undercuts the whole reason to have a progression system like this by not having a point of comparison. Simply writing that he's Lv60 with STR:100... more>> is all but meaningless when you don't know what anyone's baseline is.

There's also the problem of the Hunter/Guild/Dungeon system the story uses. After the first third of the story or so, the Guilds basically become window-dressing for the MC's one-man-show. They exist solely as paper-thin antagonists for him to brush aside or helpless peons for him to rescue. They never contribute meaningfully to the story after that, and the final arc involves them basically sitting back while he does all the work. The Hunter system offers the potential for him to "climb the ranks" as his power grows, but he jumps straight from the lowest of the low to literally power beyond measure. And as for the dungeons, there are something like 5 that are actually shown, and an uncountable number that are simply described as "and then he cleared a couple of dozen dungeons over the course of a week."

If you can get past/ignore that, it's actually not bad. It's not a terribly original story, but it's a decently fun read. <<less
